Abstract:
Background and Objective: Several studies confirm that the age of hens has a tremendous impact on external and internal egg quality characteristics. Egg production could be at serious risk if egg quality characteristics and age of hens are not seriously considered. This study was conducted to analyze the phenotypic correlations between some internal and external egg quality characteristics in old laying hens. Materials and Methods: A total of 288 eggs of 85-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens were collected during 3 weeks and their internal and external egg characteristics were evaluated. Results: Phenotypic correlations between egg quality characteristics in old laying hens indicate a negative impact on shell and albumen quality but not affected yolk quality characteristics. Conclusion: This study helps to understand that raising laying hens above 80 weeks would have a negative impact on egg quality characteristics.

Abstract:
Abstract Drying process is one of the most important factors in the processing of dehydrated egg flour. Drying affect the characteristics of resulted egg flour and influence duration of the egg flour processing. Egg flour can be processed from fresh eggs or eggs that have been stored in the freezer/frozen eggs. Dehydrated egg flour has many advantages such as increase shelf life without reducing nutritional value, reduce the volume, and expands marketing reach. The aim of the study was to find out the characteristics of dehydrated egg flour with the addition of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) from frozen eggs using different type of dryers. The treatments tested consisted of types of dryers, namely oven blower, oven and Mollen dryer. Parameters observed included yield, color, rehydration level and proximate analysis. The results showed that frozen egg can be done as an alternative of egg preservation and result good characteristics of dried egg flour. The different type of dryer affects the chemical and physical characteristics of egg flour. The drying treatment affected the color of the egg flour, but did not affect the rehydration power. The best treatment was oven drying with a yield of 24.48%, brightness 81.49% and rehydration level of 35.38%

Full text
Abstract:
The source of a reliable supply of seed is one of the most important factors determining the success of aquaculture. At present mud crab culture is reliant on wild caught juveniles, which limits the expansion of mud crab farming globally. This, coupled with the paucity of knowledge of the spawning and egg characteristics of mud crabs, prompted the investigation into the captive spawning, incubation and egg quality of Scylla serrata in South Africa. A total of 112 mature females were caught from three estuaries in northern KwaZulu Natal and acclimated to captive conditions. Mature females were present in the estuaries throughout the year and ranged from 90 to 200 mm carapace width. Except for 40 crabs all the females spawned in captivity. On average spawning took place 38 ± 23 days after capture but was not dependent on crab size. Fecundity was significantly correlated to crab size (p = 0.026), with larger females producing more eggs. The average fecundity per batch was 5.79 ± 2.07 million eggs. Hatch success rate for all egg batches was high averaging 84 ± 6 %. Egg dropping occurred in all egg batches during incubation. On average 6.5 % of the egg mass was dropped during incubation. At the average temperature of 27⁰C eggs in the incubation system hatched within 292 ± 12 hours after extrusion. In-vitro incubation of eggs proved to be an ineffective means of incubating Scylla serrata eggs with a hatch success rate of only 25 ± 5 %. Egg quality was assessed both directly, using variables such as hatch success rate and hatch synchronicity and retrospectively by using stress tests and comparing survival of larvae from different coloured egg batches. Lipid class composition and fatty acid methyl ester content for 28 batches of eggs and 16 batches of larvae were analyzed. The biochemical composition of the egg was correlated to survival of larvae in the stress tests to ascertain if the lipid content of the eggs determines their quality. Stress tests were used to retrospectively assess egg quality. Four stressors were administered to newly hatched larvae and the LD50 values recorded. An average LD50 of 64 hours was recorded for the starvation tests, 40% for the salinity tests, 37 ppm for the formalin tests and 39.7 mg/l NH3 for the ammonia stress tests was recorded. Egg colour ranged from pale yellow to orange-red. Egg colour was not influenced by female size or the time the females spent in captivity prior to spawning. Egg colour can therefore not be used as an indicator of quality. The lipid profiles of newly extruded eggs had no effect on hatch synchronicity or hatch success rate. However, the stress tests identified female size (p ≤ 0.02), DHA content of the egg (p ≤ 0.02), Σ omega-3 fatty acids of eggs (p ≤ 0.02) and EPA content of eggs (p ≤ 0.007) as possible determinants of egg quality. Larger crabs tended to produce poorer quality eggs. Egg quality also decreased as the amount of DHA, EPA and the Σ omega-3 fatty acids decreased in the eggs. To summarize, the results of this study indicated that the following parameters affect egg quality - crab size, DHA, EPA and Σ omega-3 fatty acid content of eggs.

Wu, Veronica Tong. "Chemical, Physical and Sensory Characteristics of Lactose-reduced Baked Custards Made with a Low-fat, Low-cholesterol Egg Substitute." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36644.

Full text
Abstract:

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of type of milk (whole; nonfat; nonfat, 70% lactose-reduced) and type of egg (fresh, whole egg; egg substitute) on the quality of baked custards. The egg substitute was a combination of dried egg whit e solids, dried low-fat, low-cholesterol egg yolk solids, and xanthan gum. Custard formulations served as prototypes for use in studies conducted in the Department of Food Science and Technology, Virginia Tech. In those studies, the effects of processing parameters on the quality of the custards were examined. The goal of all the studies was to develop shelf-stable lactose-reduced custard mixes that have potential for use in the foodservice industry.

In Experiment I, chemical, physical, and sensory characteristics of a dessert type baked custard, made with sucrose, were examined. In Experiment II, the same characteristics were examined for a cheese flavored, entree type custard made without sucrose. Results indicate that use of nonfat and nonfat, 70% lactose-reduced milk in place of whole milk decreased significantly total fat and cholesterol concentrations in both types of custard mixes. Lactose-reduced milk also decreased lactose and increased gala ctose concentrations. The egg substitute decreased total fat and cholesterol concentrations and increased protein concentration. In general, lactose reduction had little effect on the physical and sensory characteristics of both types of custards, but the egg substitute affected these characteristics. Custards made with the egg substitute had less intense yellow color and greater gel strength than those made with fresh, whole egg. These custards also were less bright and more uneven in color and had weake r egg flavor and aftertaste.

Based on results of this study, development of a lactose-reduced custard is feasible. However, additional studies are needed to examine potential for use of the formulations in the foodservice industry. Because the mixes could be used as bases for other types of products, such as custard pies, filled pastries, and quiches, studies that focus on development of those products could help define the niche for the mixes in the foodservice industry. Because of the trend in today1s market for reduced-fat, reduc ed-cholesterol foods, additional studies could be done to examine the effects of various types of egg substitutes on the quality of the custards. </p
Master of Science

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc. Agriculture (Animal Production)) -- University of Limpopo, 2015
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of in ovo glucose injection on egg hatchability, chick hatch-weight, productivity and carcass characteristics of indigenous Potchefstroom koekoek chickens. A complete randomized design was used in all the three parts of the study (from incubation, 1-49 days old unsexed chickens and 50-91 days old female chickens). On day 18 of incubation the developing eggs were subjected to the following treatments: 0- (no glucose or water injected), 0+ (only water injected), 5, 10, 15 or 20 mg of glucose per egg. Each treatment had three replications and there were 20 eggs per replicate. A quadratic model was used to determine in ovo glucose injection levels for optimal egg hatchability, chick hatch-weight and chick to egg weight ratio of Potchefstroom koekoek chickens. In ovo glucose injection improved (P<0.05) egg hatchability, chick hatch-weight and chick to egg weight ratio of the chickens. Egg hatchability, chick hatch-weight and chick to egg weight ratio Potchefstroom koekoek chickens were optimized at different injection levels of 4.50, 10.43 and 12.00 mg of glucose per egg, respectively. Unsexed day-old chicks from the first experiment (according to their initial treatments and replicates) were used in a complete randomized design having six treatments, replicated three times, and having ten birds per replicate. Glucose injection levels increased (P<0.05) feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio, live weight, metabolisable energy and nitrogen retention of female Potchefstroom koekoek chickens aged 1 to 49 days. However, growth rate, live weight, metabolisable energy intake and nitrogen retention of the chickens were optimized at glucose injection levels of 3.92, 4.36, 10.67 and 13.50 mg per egg, respectively. Female chickens from the second part of the study (according to their initial treatments and replicates) were used in a complete randomized design having six treatments, replicated three times, and having five birds per replicate. In ovo glucose injection levels improved (P<0.05) on feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio, live weight, metabolisable energy and nitrogen retention of female Potchefstroom koekoek chickens aged 50 to 91 days. However, only feed conversion ratio and metabolisable energy intake of the chickens were optimized at glucose injection levels of 12.15 and 5.57 mg per egg, respectively. Injection level also improved (P<0.05) carcass, breast, v drumstick, thigh, wing, gizzard and liver weights of female Potchefstroom koekoek chickens aged 13 weeks. In ovo glucose injection increased (P<0.05) breast meat tenderness, juiciness and flavour of female Potchefstroom koekoek chickens aged 91 days. However, breast tenderness, juiciness and flavour of female Potchefstroom koekoek chickens were optimized injection levels of 13.50, 19.25 and 10.83 mg of glucose per egg, respectively. The effects of 6/85-strain M. gallisepticum (6/85MG) inoculation alone or in conjunction with a F-strain M. gallisepticum (FMG) over-lay and its timing on the performance, egg, blood, and visceral characteristics of commercial egg laying hens were investigated. The applied treatments did not affect layer performance, but did affect yolk moisture and fatty acids, liver moisture, and plasma protein. The plasma protein and liver moisture changes may be indicative of the effects of the treatments on the hydration statuses of the birds during lay, whereas alterations in yolk palmitic, oleic, and linolenic acid levels with treatment may have been manifested by disturbances in the desaturation and elongation processes of fatty acid synthesis. Pre-lay 6/85MG inoculations may be a suitable substitute for pre-lay FMG inoculations and FMG overlays during lay on pre-lay 6/85MG inoculations may provide continual protection without eliciting any subsequent suppressive affects on performance.

Abstract:
AbstractSolving the chicken-or-egg problem and leveraging value contributing actors on the platform is crucial to establish dynamic platform-based ecosystems. A digital platform provider is challenged to manage multilateral platform architecture and governance mechanisms to establish an attractive platform-based ecosystem to foster third-party complementors to join. One of the key issues while establishing a platform-based ecosystem remains the decision about an adequate pricing model. Despite a large number of publications on platform governance, detailed pricing model analyses remain rare. In this explorative paper, we conduct a literature review, studying 62 relevant papers to explore the pricing impact factors to create a foundation for future research of price models in the under-researched setting of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The most relevant pricing factors and their distinctive characteristics are summed up in a multi-dimensional taxonomy. The developed taxonomy includes 13 impact factors and 38 characteristics of platform pricing. Our findings enable the decomposition and understanding of price models for their future improvement.

Tompson, Lisa, Apriel Jolliffe Simpson, Richard Wortley, Bridget O'Keeffe, and Devon Polaschek. Understanding re-victimisation through an intersectional lens. The University of Waikato, 2024. https://doi.org/10.15663/tph91171.

Full text
Abstract:
Policy efforts based on evidence about risk for re-victimisation both protect some of the most vulnerable people in society and have a good chance of reducing crime levels overall (Farrell and Pease, 1993; Grove et al., 2012; Pease et al., 2018). While research has established that the phenomenon of re-victimisation is ubiquitous, less is known about what makes some people more vulnerable to re-victimisation than others (Hamilton and Browne, 1998; Nazaretian and Fitch, 2021). Enhanced understanding of who these people are is thus crucial for developing contemporary victim-centred crime prevention policy. Victimology theories suggest that people at high risk of victimisation are typified by multiple overlapping and intersecting personal characteristics (e.g., gender, age, race/ethnicity, class, disability status, sexual identity), rather than forming homogeneous higher-order groups (e.g., delineated by a single personal characteristic; Shoham et al, 2010; Walklate, 2012). Accordingly, in this study we examined socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., gender, age, ethnicity, disability status, sexual identity) of people who were re-victimised, with an emphasis on intersectionality. That is, we focused on identifying where the co-occurrence of socio-demographic characteristics intensified risk of re-victimisation. We use re-victimisation as an umbrella term to cover: • Poly-victimisation (i.e., >1 victimisation for different types of crime), and • Repeat-victimisation (i.e., >1 victimisation for different types of crime) for 11 different crime types. We therefore analysed 12 different types of re-victimisation over five waves of the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey (NZCVS) in the privacy- and security-protected environment of Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) with Conjunctive Analysis of Case Configurations. This method enabled us to position groups (i.e., combinations of characteristics) as the unit of analysis and identify where intersecting characteristics were associated with high rates of re-victimisation and isolate when particular individual characteristics were especially noteworthy. This research makes four important contributions to the evidence base on victimisation. First, while re-victimisation experiences have been studied for a range of crime types internationally (see Farrell et al., 2005), this is the first research to do so for Aotearoa New Zealand. Second, it adds to the scant evidence base on poly-victimisation. Third, it corroborates the empirical findings from other countries that risk of re-victimisation increases cumulatively (Johnson et al., 1997), hence the need for policies and practices that get upstream of the problem and prevent re-victimisation at the earliest opportunity. Fourth, this research advances knowledge on how socio-demographic characteristics intersect to elevate risk of re-victimisation. The findings are relevant for policymakers developing victimisation prevention programmes across various organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Abstract:
This paper introduces preliminary evidence from a cross-country database of policy characteristics and potential uses of that database. While most databases have emphasized either the content of policies (e.g., size of government deficits) or countries formal institutions (e.g., political regime, electoral system), the variables in this database reflect the policymaking capabilities of different polities. The paper attempts to explain these policy characteristics as depending on the workings of political institutions, using a logic emphasizing intertemporal political compromise. The paper also contrasts this logic with alternatives such as the veto players approach. The paper concludes by suggesting the use of these policy characteristics or state capabilities as explanatory variables for the effectiveness of public spending in various social areas.

Full text
Abstract:
t The pink bollworm, Pectinophoragossypiellais a key pest of cotton world-wide. In Israel mating disruption sex pheromone is used in all cotton fields and recent repeated outbreaks of the pest populations has suggested a change in the population sex pheromone characteristics. The research goals were to (1) determine the change in pheromone characteristic of PBW females after long experience to Mating Disruption (MD), (2) to test the male’s antennae response (EAG) to pheromone characteristics of laboratory, naive females, and of field collected, MD experienced females, (3) to analyse the biosynthetic pathway for possible enzyme variations, (4) to determine the male behavioural response to the pheromone blend involved in the resistance to MD. The experiments revealed that (1) MD experienced females produced pheromone blend with higher ZZ ratio than lab reared (MD naive females) that typically produced ZZ:EE ratio of 1:1. (2) Male’s origin did not affect its response to pheromone characteristics of lab or field females. (3) A transcriptome study demonstrated many gene-encode enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway, but some of the transcripts were produced in differing levels in the MD resistant populations. (4) Male origin (field or lab) influenced males’ choice of mate with strong preference to females sharing the same origin. However, when MD was applied, males of both populations were more attracted to females originated form failed MD treated fields. We conclude that in MD failed fields a change in the population mean of the ratio of the pheromone components had occurred. Males in these fields had changed their search “image” accordingly while keeping the wide range of response to all pheromone characteristics. The change in the pheromone blend is due to different level of pheromone related enzyme production.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: This meta-analysis will not only summarize all the ASRTs reported in clinical trials but also evaluate their effect on objective and subjective indices related to insomnia disorder. We will also perform subgroup analyses to identify possible confounders of the effects of ASRTs including treatment characteristics (e.g., acupoint selection, stimulation method, treatment duration) and patient characteristics (e.g., age, comorbidities, severity, and course of insomnia disorder). In doing so, we will endeavor to answer questions about whether efficacy varies according to the aspect of sleep targeted and whether the effects differ according to different modes of acupoint stimulation, acupoints applied, or specific types of insomnia, thereby providing the evidence to develop specific recommendations on prescribing ASRTs for insomnia disorder.

Marsteller, Jill A., Vadim Dukhanin, So-Yeon Kang, et al. Measuring Healthcare Organization Characteristics in Cancer Care Delivery Research. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepctb43.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives. This Technical Brief aims to identify: 1) frameworks that describe organizational context and process characteristics relevant to cancer care delivery research, and compare these frameworks to the Integrated Framework recently developed by National Cancer Institute staff Weaver, Breslau, and colleagues; 2) approaches used to improve understanding of how organizational characteristics are described, measured, and analyzed in the context of cancer screening, diagnosis, or treatment; and 3) organizational context and process characteristics examined in studies assessing cancer care; and 4) evidence gaps and future research needs to advance the science of assessing the effects of organizational characteristics on cancer care. Review methods. We integrated discussions with Key Informants and syntheses of evidence from searches of literature published from 2010 to 2023, using PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, as well as select grey literature. Findings. We identified 17 frameworks that were developed or applied to examine the effects of organizational characteristics (including structures, context, and processes) on cancer care delivery. Our analysis of these frameworks supported the comprehensiveness of the Integrated Framework, though a few identified characteristics were not explicitly included in the Integrated Framework. We found 90 studies that take various approaches to describe, measure, and analyze organizational characteristics in the context of cancer care research. Of these, we identified 25 that tested associations between organization characteristics and screening, diagnosis, or treatment outcomes, and described measurement in detail. Cancer-related studies that include organizational measures have used a wide range of study designs and focused mostly on structural characteristics (e.g., type, size), total care models such as the patient-centered medical home, and processes of improvement project implementation and barrier assessment (such as guideline implementation). We identified specific organizational measures examined in the cancer care literature, noting little standardization of measures across studies and a need for multilevel inquiry. Our discussions with Key Informants and review of the literature indicated that many characteristics of healthcare organizations are relevant to cancer care delivery and useful to assess when precisely defined. Studies with stronger designs and more rigorous organizational measurement are needed to better determine the effects of organizational characteristics on the outcomes of cancer care. Conclusion. Our findings suggest that the Integrated Framework generally covers relevant organizational context and process characteristics. The literature has a wide array of studies examining organizational characteristics, but few studies directly associate organizational factors with clinical outcomes. Research and collaboration are needed to improve measurement of organizational factors, to clarify our understanding of multilevel aspects of organizational context and process and how they affect care, and to standardize terminology and measures.
