Full textDemocracy emerged as a major challenge for African societies throughout the 1990s. The religious dynamic constitutes a key element in the social and political changes associated with democratic transition. In contrast to the West, religion appears to be an element that accompanies political modernization in African societies. Through its strong political involvement, the Catholic Church of the Democratic Republic of Congo is attempting to contribute to the political modernization of the DRC- including the improvement of its democratic deficit. By acting as a social partner, the Catholic Church hopes to increase citizen participation in politics and instill awareness of democratic values. It is legitimate/ important to examine whether the interaction between Catholicism and the political system of the DRC is likely to give rise to a democratic political culture. Using a dialectical approach that opposes the political discourse and actions from the top (top-down politics) with political thought from the bottom (bottom-up politics), this paper will analyze the emergence of a political culture molded by Catholicism and civil society in the DRC

Full textDeveloped around the question: « What are the bishops’ discursive strategies for turning agents into actors of desired change, and hence into peacemakers », research shows from the rhetorical analysis of eight speeches by the bishops of the CENCO, the impact and pragmatic of their speeches in the reconstruction of the peace in the DRC. To be based on an empirical basis the socio-political crisis in the DRC (1990-2010), the rhetorical analysis of the episcopal word, emerging in the pragmatics of communication as elaborated in the theory of C. Perelman’s argumentation, in the argumentative analysis of R. Amossy’speech and P. Charaudeau’s political discourse, deals with the reconstruction of the Nation, the consolidation of peace and the prospects for a peaceful, just and prosperous democratic Congo. The analysis raises two major issues: it pursues a pragmatic aim in order to produce an effective impact on the audience and constructs new meanings, precisely, a new system of values on which to build the Nation. Putting the focal point on the values of the ethos: paradigms of « must-do » and of « bring-into-being », the research is inscribed in the moral theology, precisely theological ethic. These structuring values are normative principles, principles of reflection and anchors that the theological and ethical discourse on peace. To the counter values that threaten peace, analysis proposes, starting from the elaborations of P. Ricoeur on responsibility and coherence, and of M. Foucault’s on truth, an ethic of responsibility and an ethic of coherence backed by eths ethic of truth. Peace is a civic responsibility, a component of the ethics of fraternity built on the ethics of truth. The alethic generate the ethic of coherence among the recipients. The correctness of discourse the authenticity of life, the conformity of speech to the way of living and acting, the ethics of coherence as a mode of sincerity and authenticity of life, make it possible to build peace and self-Homonoïa in the DRC. Keywords: peace, ethos, logos, doxa, dialogism, values, change, reconstruction, consolidation, pragmatics, rule of law, rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, ethic of responsibility, ethic truth, ethic of coherence.

Full textThe evangelization of Mai-Ndombe region in the Bandundu province in Congo-Kinshasa began on 4 October, 1907. The area of the district of Mai-Ndombe, which first belonged to the Apostolic Curacy of the Congo Independent State, then after 1919 to the Apostolic Curacy of Léopoldville before breaking apart in 1953 to become the Apostolic Curacy of Inongo, became the Diocese of Inongo on 10 November, 1959. More than a hundred years after the first missionaries arrived, the religious situation is contrasted with, on the one hand the presence of the Church with a well established native clergy, the start of a diocesan religious congregation, numerous religious and priesthood vocations, the growing number of Catholics (440 878 out of a population of 1 036 667), and on the other hand the upsurge of witchcraft, the popular quest for curing, the proliferation of new religious movements outside the Church, and poverty. By tracing the history of the Mai-Ndombe evangelization, this thesis studies a new approach to faith devised from the inculturation viewpoint. Considering the obstacles met by evangelization and studying the process of inculturation, the thesis suggests inculturation Pastoralia which relies on the understanding of the Church as the family of God whose living church communities are the perfect illustration. In addition, the thesis extracts inculturation from the “all religious” to make it a quest of God in everyday’s life, which opens it to everyone

Full textThis study focuses on the civic education program of the Catholic Church in the Democrat-ic Republic of Congo (DRC). The action research conducted in seven Basic Ecclesial Communities of the Sacré-Coeur parish in Shabunda, located in the South Kivu province, enabled to identify practices of socio-political engagement developed by these communities either from or related to the civic education program deployed by the Church since 2004. Both the analysis of the survey participants’ views and the reading of the Manuel de réfé-rence (Reference Manual) have resulted into six principal categories and three procedures. The research has allowed to identify main assets, strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of the civic education program and thereby to suggest improvements for the future of the pro-gram. Even though the relevance of both the program and the education practice is not questioned, they (practice and program) need, however, to be enhanced in order to ade-quately respond to the need of liberation, as expressed by their beneficiaries. The compo-nent should hinge on issues of power and authority, which the research findings have re-vealed to be key in the Congolese crisis. The prerequisite of the rule of law, as longed and sought by the Church through its practice of the civic education, in the DRC, lies in the following principle: the Congolese governing authorities should exercise their power for service rather than domination. To ensure that this principle is implemented, the ecclesial practice of the civic education will bring the beneficiaries of the program to meet Jesus Christ, servant and liberator of humans, to let themselves be transformed by Him and to become, as Him, servants and liberators of brothers and sisters. The aim of the civic educa-tion will not only be for the knowledge of citizens’ rights and responsibilities, but will be-come a sequela Christi, leading each beneficiary of the program, who have now become alter Christus, to daily recall the liberating memory of Jesus-Christ’s death and resurrection. Concerning the implementation of the improved program, which needs to be developed from the grassroots, the Church should give greater place to ecclesial communities, plan monitoring follow-up mechanism, and provide indicators for objective evaluations.

Full textThe Catholic Church in Zaïre has been a consistent critic of the Mobutu dictatorship during a period which has seen the country slide into economic, political and social chaos. It has been vocal on issues like social injustice and infringements of human rights, targeting, in particular way, the moral bankruptcy and greed of the local political élite. The Church, through the bishops, has expressed the desire of many citizens of Zaïre for the establishment of genuinely participative political society which would ensure a more just distribution of responsabilities, resources and wealth. Drawing on the social teaching of the Church, the Catholic community in Zaïre firmly believes that it can contribute to the emergence of new society in the country on a number of levels, ranging from reflective to the actively engaged. Thanks to its country-wide presence and its numerous local organisations and associations, the Catholic Church in Zaïre is a strong position to respond creatively to the education, health and economic needs of people at a time when the state's capacity for intervention is limited. In spite of its internal division, the Church constitutes a moral authority for the people of Zaïre and a vital critical voice in politics

Full textThis thesis focuses the missionary presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo under the Belgian rule towards the end of the Sixth Century. We seek to understand bow this Church came to be financially dependent by looking at the different causes or exogenous and endogenous as well as the roots of this phenomenon within the context of the colonial policy. From the beginning, it has received State subsidies and enjoyed other significant advantages including large tracts of land. Ever since the native hierarchy has taken over, i.e. as from the decolonization, this Church has been unable to support itself and has been obliged constantly seek external aid from western financial bodies in order to meet its needs. But in the light of the current western sociocultural context (decline of religious practices, financial crises worldwide ... ) such a financial extraversion is no longer comforting. Ali things considered, long accustomed as it was to be assisted, this Congolese Church now needs to develop a new course of action through which it will be able to find other means of self-support for its survival. The objective of this work is to show that there is potential at band, namely the mobilization and the rational management of the human and economic resources available, the cost-effectiveness of the production facilities inherited from the missionaries, but resting on a favourable national sociopolitical and economic environment and a change in the attitude of the parties involved
