Full textThis research deals with the historic and geopolitical dynamics of Copts inside the national Egyptian contest and the way they are analyzed by European (British - French) and American authors. The aim is to underline the discrepancy between the complex Egyptian reality and the simplistic representation of confessional conflict Christian vs Muslims. This is what comes to light from the media and bibliography on Coptic issue analyzed. The terminology used for Copts (minority, community, diaspora) denotes this tendency: it has not a direct correspondence in Arabic language because Egyptians refuse these labels. Moreover it does not take in consideration geopolitical factors that move Egyptian actors for the control of territory and rivalries among Copts for this control. The concept of Coptic (discriminated) minority among Muslims majority, is functional to justify the minorities’ protection in Middle East by colonialist and imperialist politics of Europe and USA. Violence cases against Copts are an instrument to delegitimize Egyptian government if it does not respect accords: this is what happened with transition government in 2011 and Morsi’s government in 2012. Coptic emigrated militants, with their extremist message, constitute a connection point between this interventionist politic and academic investigation, and they are responsible of the increasing interest for Copts among scholars and journalists

Full textLaw and Religion are two systems which mark the quotient of mankind, and which are essentially, are not impervious. Sometimes, the Religion is based on the political power, the religious principles becoming source of law. On the contrary, the State can make religion a relay to consolidate its authority. In addition, the separation between the State and the religious institutions leads only seldom to a tight separation of Law and Religion. Freedom of religion is closely related to the respect of the democracy. In Russia, the orthodox Church was reaffirmed like the incarnation of the Russian identity. Firm support of a capacity which returns well it, it obtained a privileged position compared to the other religions. But above all, Orthodoxy remains the bases of Russian nationalism since the birth of the Russian State

Full textThis research devoted to Father Eugene Jean Coste follows three orientations. The first aspect is associated to historical circumstance: the diffusion of Catholicism of the Far-East Asia, which was conducted by the western missionaries at the end of XIX century. In spite of two merciless persecutions, the treaty signed in 1886 completely changed the situation. The Catholic Church in Korea was re-established and the Catholic Parish of Myeongdong expanded its community rapidly. Missionaries’ architectural activities that commenced in this period, otherwise, introduced the European culture to Korea. The European-style cathedrals inspired a new aesthetic in the Parish. The second orientation is an architectural perspective: these studies considerably are related to their architectural realizations in the year of 1896 which drew the modernization of Korea. Coste, who was a prosecutor of Paris Foreign Missions Society, assimilated into the principles of the Neo-Gothic architectures and incorporated them in the religious buildings, especially when he supervised the construction of the biggest church in Korea, Seoul Myeongdong Cathedral. The research on the churches initially designed by this French catholic missionary, accordingly, tries to identify modern Korean architectures. In addition, the research could allow readers to discover the various French Neo-Gothic styles in the mission country. Such architectural movements were launched in the intimate relations among Korea, Japan and China. Therefore, Paris Foreign Missions Society’s architectures testify to the history of exchanges with the western culture, taking the economical and practical factors into consideration. The realizations of Father Coste have influenced the concepts of other Korean European-style churches designed by Paris Foreign Missions Society. With the archetype of Father Coste’s architectures, his colleagues, priest-constructors built the churches in the region with the various results of both individual competences and other church communities. In the end, the dissertation studies the conception of religious heritages and the procedure that the architectures of Paris Foreign Missions became heritages in Korea. The concern about heritages remains entirely showing the weakness of historical knowledge and technical limitation. But new idea and technology of the conservation were introduced. The first step was the restoration of Yakhyeon Saint-Joseph Church in 2000. Finally, we will contemplate the applications of Paris Foreign Missions Society’s edifices and the conservations of religious heritages in the same protection zone for the survival of these historical architectures

Full textNicolas Psaume, a native of Chaumont-sur-aire (Meuse-France), enters the order of premontre in 1538. Trained in Paris in the tradition of Gerson, he dedicates himself to the reforming of the abbey Saint-Paul of Verdun. Installed as bishop of Verdun in 1548 by cardinal jean de Lorraine, he takes possession of e diocese without resident bishop for forty years and which, because of its general state, requires a complete reform. As bishop and count, Psaume succeeds it win recognition from the mobility and in re-establishing episcopal authority. Having been sent to the second and third sessions of the council of trent by the emperor of Germany on whom he his dependent, Psaume plays an important role in the discussion of the decree regarding the divine institution of bishops and those decrees regarding reform. In the tradition of Barthelemy des martyrs, archbishop of Braga, he inserites himself ever he manages only with difficulty to change the stand of Charles of Lorraine whose client he is. Having returned to his diocese in Verdun, he dedicates him to the application of the tridentine reforms. He would like to maintain the unique autonomy of his town but the obligation to fight against Protestantism forces him to accept military aid from the king of France, thus achieving the policies of the house of Lorraine in uniting to france the "three bishoprics". Psaume is the witness of a popular theology due to his works, many of wich are still inedited. His line of thought: the calling of all men to paradise through the struggle of living a Christian life. He elaborates lengthily on the sacraments of Christian life and especially on the sacrament of the holy orders and its demands. In the likeness of Borromeo, Psaume reforms his diocese by the means laid down at trent : diocesan synods, pastoral visits, the formation of clerics, the foundation of a college trusted to the Jesuits, and of "small schools", and preaching. He appears as the typical tridentine prelate in that he applies the council in all aspects. He is one of the rare reforming French-speaking bishops of the XVIth century. The second volume contains 215 pages often unedited
Merlani, Giulio. "Francesco Buonvisi, un nunzio apostolico alla corte di Leopoldo I." Thesis, Normandie, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020NORMC002.
Full textThe thesis analyzes the diplomatic-political activity carried out by the nuncio Francesco Buonvisi at the court of Leopold I of Habsburg. The main political events of the European scenario in the years 1672-1678 were studied through the study of the correspondence exchanged between the nuncio and Rome. In particular, the work done by Buonvisi in the realization of the pontifical projects was highlighted: stipulation of peace between the European powers and creation of an alliance against the Turks. For this reason, the path taken by the pontifical diplomacy for the preparation of the congress of Nijmegen was considered and much attention was paid to the election of Innocent XI. The pope, in fact, brought about a change of course in pontifical politics at a time when Rome did not have the ability to really influence other European courts. This inability emerged from the study of the vain efforts made by the nuncio Buonvisi. Despite the limited success achieved by Francesco Buonvisi, his contribution has proved to be fundamental for the papal court and for the few but significant results obtained in favor of the Holy See

Full textTo put an end to the old bloodthirsty traditions of Africans, Protestant missions began in the nineteenth century, the spiritual conquest of Aboriginal people. Through the efforts of freed slaves, Victorian values, legitimate trade, and Christianity found enthusiastic supporters among Africans. With the institutions of the Christian missions in West Africa, many freed slaves had the chance to learn vocational training. Some became missionaries. They then went to their respective villages to preach Christianity to Aboriginal people. If the policy advocated the English philanthropist encountered many obstacles after 1861, it is because of the colonial policy of the British Government who wanted at all costs impose its influence in Africa. Likely, the role that played African and Anglican missionaries in the transformation of the nigger thought should not be under estimated. Despite the conflicts, European missionaries and Africans is were helped each other. Indeed, the policy advocated the English philanthropist Thomas Fowell Buxton, the Bible and the plough, in Africa has been a great triumph in West Africa. It had enabled the final abolition of the slave trade, the introduction of Christianity, the establishment of a legitimate trade and the education of Africans
