"The article focuses on the problem of egology in the thought of Roman Ingarden, a conception that offers a creative and critical response to Husserl’s egology and converges with the historical conception of the ego in Descartes. It analyses the problem in two stages based on two important texts by Ingarden: Controversy over the Existence of the World and Man and Time. Starting with reflections on the status of pure consciousness, Ingarden recognises the pure ego as something solely abstract compared with the worldly and irreducible real ego. From there his reflections on the ego move on to the problem of its substantiality, specific temporality as well as the role and experience of the body to finally produce a philosophy of existence with ethical and personalistic overtones. In this way Ingarden recreates the egological journey in Descartes, who, searching for the foundation of knowledge, identified subjectivity as the union of body and soul and saw its fulfilment in the ethical experience of generosity. AbstractThis study examined the relationship of psychiatric diagnoses to gender, IQ, and ego development level in an inpatient sample of 269 adolescents. It was found that adolescents with an affective disorder diagnosis, in contrast to those with a diagnosis of conduct or mixed affective-conduct disorder, were more likely to (a) be female, (b) have higher IQ scores, and (c) have higher ego development levels. No significant age differences were found between groups. Comparisons between the single diagnosis and mixed disorder groups indicated that the mixed disorder group is characterized by the most severe symptoms found in each of the pure affective and conduct disordered groups. A relationship between type of DSM-III diagnosis and ego development level in adolescence was demonstrated after controlling for the effects of age, gender, and IQ. These results are offered as an explication of the developmental dimensions inherent in DSM-III psychiatric diagnoses.

Fichte’s philosophy is known as a science of freedom since his first Wissenschaftslehre. But since the ego is interpreted as a mere picture in his late moral philosophy, we wonder how the passive image of a truly existing original (the Absolute) can be free. The answer suggested here is that the ego can be understood as a free being, if it is understood as being pure of every Non-I, as pure dynamic being, which cannot be bound to any substantial version of itself, and not even the form of the present.Seit seiner ersten Wissenschaftslehre ist Fichtes Philosophie bekanntlich eine Freiheitslehre. Sofern das Ich in seiner späten Moralphilosophie als einfaches Bild gedeutet wird, stellt sich jedoch die Frage, wie das passive Bild eines wirklich existierenden Originals (das Absolute) frei sein kann. Die Antwort, die hier vorgeschlagen wird, ist, dass das Ich als frei verstanden werden kann, wenn es als rein von jedem Nicht-Ich gedacht wird, als dynamisches Wesen, das an keine Bestimmung seiner selbst gebunden sein darf, auch nicht an die Form der Gegenwart.

The component patterns of personality resilience within a population recently exposed to extreme stress and adversity were investigated; specifically, the self-scoring Ego Resiliency Scale (ER89) was used to identify individual qualities of ego resilience in 495 Kuwait University students. Males and females, married and single, took the ER89 five years after Kuwait.s liberation. The question of gender differences and the quality of resilience were addressed. The ER89, a reliable self-scoring inventory of 14 items using a 4-point scale, reflects the pure resilience qualities of respondents. Results show differences between male/female respondents and nuclear/extended family types. The scope of this study did not include the subjects' adaptation to the invasion experience, thus no symptom or exposure measures were included.

ABSTRACTSome of Jung's writing reveals a non-dual sensibility, especially when he describes the Self as the totality of the psyche, and in his stress on theunus mundusand synchronicity. But overall he tends to favor a dualistic approach to the psyche; he never relinquishes the importance of the ego, he believes that the Self needs the ego to become conscious of itself, and he does not focus on pure consciousness beyond its images. This paper compares Jung's notion of the Self with descriptions of consciousness in various non-dual religious traditions. We suggest that because the Self is the ultimate subject, it can never be an object of consciousness. We suggest some of the implications of non-dual philosophy for psychotherapy.

“Pero la cuestión que quiero plantear es la siguiente: ¿no es suficiente con tener este yo psíquico y psicofísico? ¿Necesitamos añadirle un yo trascendental, como una estructura de la conciencia absoluta?” Sartre planteó esta cuestión en su célebre ensayo La trascendencia del ego (2004: p.3). Ella enuncia la concepción básica de la fenomenología no-egológica, la cual no niega la existencia misma del ego o del sujeto, sino más bien lo concibe como un ser constituido y mundano, como trascendente respecto del ámbito de la conciencia. En la presente ponencia me gustaría mostrar por qué la fenomenología no puede prescindir de la noción del ego trascendental. Con tal propósito, consideraré de cerca la noción husserliana del “yo puro” del primer y del segundo libro de Ideas (1913) y, a grandes rasgos, el concepto general que Husserl se hace sobre el yo “fenomenológico” y “yo trascendental”. Tal concepto se puede encontrar en los manuscritos de este periodo, así como en algunos textos más tardíos. Intentaré demostrar que la noción husserliana del ego trascendental propia de este periodo podría articularse como una respuesta satisfactoria o al menos plausible, al desafío no-egológico con el que se ve confrontada la fenomenología egológica de Husserl.“But the question I would like to raise is the following: is this psychical and psycho-physical me not sufficient? Do we need to add to it a transcendental I, as a structure of absolute consciousness?” – Sartre raised this question in his famous essay, The transcen-dence of the ego (2004: 3). This is the basic conception of non-egological phenomenology, which latter does not deny the very existence of ego or subject, but regards it as a constituted, worldly being, something which is transcendent concerning the domain of consciousness. In this lecture I would like to demonstrate the thesis, why phenomenology cannot get along without the concept of a transcendental ego. I will have a closer look on Husserl’s notion of “pure I” in the first and second book of Ideas (1913), and more generally on Husserl’s overall concept of “phenomenological” or “transcendental I” that could be found in the manuscripts of this period and little after. I will try to show that Husserl’s conception of transcendental ego that one could find in this period could be articulated as successful or at least plausible answer to the non-egological challenge of Husserl’s egological phenomenology.

<p>This article is an attempt to overcome the epistemological interpretation of the practical importance of the «matter of feelings» in favor of the introduction of the existential Absolutes as a phenomenological «matter», constructed by us in a “loaded” natural setting. The authors rely on the basic provisions of phenomenological philosophy, detailed in such Husserl’s works as the “Logical investigations”, “Ideas for a pure phenomenology”, “Phenomenology of the Internal Consciousness of Time.” The authors propose a more expansive interpretation of such concepts as «intention», «operation noesis», «internal consciousness of time.» As a unifying moment of the psyche the authors used Carl Jung’s concept of «Ego», in which they insert the corresponding phenomenological implications. We are in the chains of our own mentality, for it is only through it that we can obey. A poor appearance in the world requires from «Ego» immediate opportunities to live in piled formation natural settings, recreating thus the fundamental original experiences of the subjects. Meanwhile, following the perfect schemes of everyday life, we recreate the existential transparent myth as the focus of opposing Absolutes. Absolutes derive from universal, precluding any differentiation. «Ego», absorbed by «urgent matters», seeks to satisfy nothing but its own needs, devoid at times of choice, despite the fact that the choice, like everything else, is only in our minds.<strong></strong></p>

Previous issue date: 2017-08-29<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES<br>Le présent travail a pour intention d'analyser les concept de conscience et d'ego tels que développés par le philosophe Jean-Paul Sartre dans ses oeuvres de jeunesse, plus spécifiquement dans l'opuscule la transcendance de l'ego. Une brève présentation historique de l'atmosphère intellectuelle de l'époque de Sartre montre l'importance de la réception de l'oeuvre de Husserl en France mais aussi les obstacles que celle-ci implique relativement à la question du contact immédiat avec le concret. Ce contact, rendu possible par l'idée d'intetionalité développée par Husserl, sera graduellement surmonté au nom d'un transcendantalisme auquel il se référe en tant que phénoménologue. Afin de revenir au concret, Sartre abandonnera l'idéalisme transcendantal au profit d'une relation avec le monde non intellectualiste, qui permettra la réflexion à partir d'une conscience pré-réflexive. Ce type de conscience pourra être perçue dans divers concepts de Sartre développés à la même époque, comme, entre autres, la magie, la mauvaise foi, la temporalité. Notre hypothése d'interprétation avance l'idée selon laquelle la dynamique entre la conscience et l'égo oriente l'argumentation de Sartre dans cette période où l'ego, passant du réfléchi à l'irréflechi, perd son "intimité" et où la conscience reprend sa loi absolue selon notre auteur: l'immédiat.<br>Na presente dissertação pretendemos analisar o conceito de consciência e de ego no pensamento desenvolvido pelo filósofo Jean-Paul Sartre em seus trabalhos de juventude, nomeadamente no opúsculo A Transcendência do ego. Uma breve exposição histórica do ambiente intelectual francês à época de Sartre esclarece a importância do advento da obra de Husserl na França, bem como os obstáculos que ela impõe no que concerne a um contato imediato com o concreto. Tal contato, possibilitado pela ideia de intencionalidade desenvolvida por Husserl, gradativamente será obliterado em nome de um transcendentalismo ao qual como fenomenólogo ele se adéqua. Para retomar o concreto, Sartre lançará mão do idealismo transcendental, vai elaborar uma filosofia da relação não intelectualista com o mundo para fundamentar a reflexão a partir de uma consciência pré-reflexiva. Esse tipo de consciência se fará perceber em diversos conceitos de Sartre também desenvolvidos neste período, como a mágica, a má-fé, a temporalidade, dentre outros. A dinâmica entre a consciência e o ego orienta a argumentação de Sartre, eis nossa hipótese interpretativa, neste período em que o ego, resvalando do plano refletido para o irrefletido, perde sua “intimidade” e a consciência retoma o que para nosso autor configura sua lei absoluta: o imediato.

The internalmotivation that led Husserl to revise his early view of the pure Ego as empty ofessential content is traced to the end of explicating his reformulation of phenomenologyas the egology of the concrete transcendental Ego. The necessity ofrecasting transcendental phenomenology as a transcendental idealism that followsfrom this reformulation is presented and the appearance of transcendentalsolipsism of this idealism exposed as unfounded. That the ground of this exposureis Husserl’s phenomenological appropriation of Leibniz’s metaphysical insightsinto the problem of accounting for the plurality of monads, and, therefore, not theCartesian problem of the other mind, is presented as the key to reclaiming thetraditional philosophical context of the phenomenological problem of the other.<br>La motivación interna que llevó a Husserl a revisar su visión tempranadel Ego puro como vacío de contenido esencial puede rastrearse con el fin de explicarsu reformulación de la fenomenología como la egología del Ego trascendentalconcreto. Este artículo presenta la necesidad de replantear la fenomenologíatrascendental como un idealismo trascendental que se sigue de esta reformulación,y se expone como infundada la apariencia de solipsismo trascendentalde este idealismo. Jan Wallentin. Vägar till samadhi : en granskning av Robert K. C. Formans begrepp ”Pure Consciousness Event” (Roads to Samadhi : An Examination of Robert K. C. Forman’s Concept of ”Pure Consciousness Event”). Umeå University: Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious studies. Bachelor thesis. June 2021.Is Robert K. C. Forman’s concept of ”pure consciousness event” an example of a universal,mystical core experience? Is it possible to establish the neural correlates of this proposedexperience, and to induce it experimentally? These are the main questions of this study,which is a literature review drawing on recent scientific research from three fields: religious studies, philosophy of consciousness and neuroscience.The major findings are:The concept of ”pure consciousness event” (PCE) does seem like a tenable way ofgetting around the constructivist critique regarding universal, mystical core experiences.However, Forman’s original definition of PCE seems too strict. Forman defines PCE as ”a wakeful though contentless (non-intentional) consciousness”, but in the conventional wisdom of contemporary philosophy it is deemed impossible to be conscious without beingconscious about something. A conceivable solution would be to replace the term ”PCE” withThomas Metzinger’s less strict term ”Minimal Phenomenal Experience” (MPE), whichallows for some, though minimal, mental content during these kind of experiences.Regarding neural correlates, several recent studies suggest that a high level of activityin the brain’s default mode network (DMN) is correlated with a heightened sense of self-awareness. A low level of activity in the DMN is, vice versa, correlated with a sense of self-forgetting, as in the flow-experience. However, the activity-level of the DMN does not seem to fully explain the proposed existence of pure consciousness events, even in a less strict definition of this term.Methods used to induce experiences reminiscent of PCE include the white dreams ofTibetan dream yoga (yoga nidrā), states of deep meditation, and the intake of psychoactive substances, like psilocybin, DMT and LSD.Keyterms: Robert K. Previous issue date: 2007-02-12<br>The goal of this dissertation is reflect on the concepts that validate the reasoning of transcendental idealism in the work of Husserl Ideas for a phenomenology pure and phenomenological philosophy. This work does not represent a radical change from part of the philosopher as portraying the commentators, but the apex of idealistic conception of science transcendental. The term idealism accumulates meanings expressed in many different currents of modern philosophy, which are all suspended by reducing philosophical in favor of a transcendental idealism inaugurate responsible for the problem of contemporary philosophy. The focus of the research is to think about the relevance of this idealism through the conceptual framework that surrounds the work cited. Among the topics investigated are the essences of intuition as intuition semantics of the transcendental experience. The intent as entrelaçamento needed between subjectivity and objectivity, which represents the overcoming of any dichotomy. What I like pure subjectivity and dissolution of the opening of the semantic field of possibility. And the formation of transcendental spheres of the world under the transcendental pure possibility of sense. A phenomenological science there is as transcendental idealism or semantic, incorporating the issues ontológicas through descriptive analysis of the essences of donor direction to the plane factual<br>O objetivo da dissertação é refletir acerca dos conceitos que validam a fundamentação do idealismo transcendental de Husserl na obra Idéias para uma fenomenologia pura e filosofia fenomenológica. Tal obra não representa uma mudança radical de vertente do filósofo como retratam os comentadores, mas o ápice da concepção idealista da ciência transcendental. O termo idealismo acumula muitas significações expressas nas diferentes correntes da filosofia moderna, as quais são todas suspensas através da redução filosófica em favor de um idealismo transcendental responsável por inaugurar a problemática da filosofia contemporânea. O enfoque da pesquisa é pensar sobre a relevância deste idealismo através do arcabouço conceitual que circunda a obra citada. Dentre os temas investigados estão a intuição de essências como intuição semântica da experiência transcendental. A intencionalidade como entrelaçamento necessário entre subjetividade e objetividade, que representa a superação de qualquer dicotomia. O eu puro como dissolução da subjetividade e abertura do campo semântico de possibilidade. E a constituição transcendental das esferas do mundo no âmbito transcendental da pura possibilidade de sentido. Estes conceitos revelam a importância de compreender a fenomenologia como idealismo transcendental. In this thesis, I defend a non-egologic pure consciousness which is the initial position of Husserl in the Logical Investigations. There is anti transcendental ego argumentations in which I claim that self alienation of the "<br>transcendental ego"<br>, incomplete reduction, the presence of the pre-reflective transcendental ego are the reasons to leave the claim about the existence of the "<br>transcendental ego"<br>. I also claim that the possible solution of the mind-body problem depends on the denial of the "<br>transcendental ego"<br>in the frame of phenomenology. I defend the non-egologic pure consciousness which is not identical and reducible to whatever is material, including brain. Qualia, intentionality, intuition, philosophizing constitution acts of pure consciousness are used to support the claim about immaterial nature of non-egologic pure consciousness.

Spiders produce a diverse number of silk proteins that are well-known for their extraordinary mechanical and biological properties. Dragline silk has been the most prominent focus of research because of its exceptional high tensile strength and extensibility. In our research, we have focused on the characterization of small molecular weight proteins found within dragline and tubuliform silks. Within the black widow spider, Lactrodectus hesperus, these proteins have been named Cysteine-Rich Protein (CRP) and determined to be a family of five individual proteins. The small protein identified within the tubuliform silks has been named Egg Case Protein 3 (ECP-3). In this study, recombinant expression of ECP-3 in the pET-19b-SUMO vector was to facilitate purification and development of an immunological reagent. Using western blot analysis, we have demonstrated that ECP-3 is efficiently expressed in bacteria. We also investigated CRP1 protein and its ability to bind MaSp1 components using pull down assays to determine potential interactions. No substantial biochemical evidence was produced to demonstrate protein-protein interactions between the two. Additionally, we show that using RT-PCR analysis from mRNAs collected from the major ampullate gland that transcript levels for CRP-family members from non-silked and a silked spider are different. CRP2 and CRP4 mRNA levels were shown to increase upon silking. Overall, the major findings of this thesis involved characterizing the ECP-3 protein found within tubuliform silks as well as determining the expression patterns for CRP-family members.

Die zunehmende Nachfrage nach Putenfleisch hat zu einer enormen Steigerung der Putenfleischerzeugung geführt. Puten werden heute überwiegend in spezialisierten Betrieben mit höher Tierkonzentration gemästet. Dabei werden auf hohe Mastleistung gezüchtete Rassen verwendet. Gesundheitsprobleme und Verhaltensbeeinträchtigungen in den Beständen sind die Folge, die auch aus Sicht des Tierschutzes erheblichen Anlass zur Kritik bieten. Es wird erwartet, dass Puten in ökologischer Haltung artgerecht aufgezogen werden und der Gesundheitszustand dadurch verbessert wird. Zu der Frage, inwiefern die ökologische Haltung in dieser Hinsicht der konventionellen überlegen ist, liegen kaum Daten vor.
Die Zielstellung bestand deshalb darin, die Befunde aus der Fleischuntersuchung als Ausdruck der Tiergesundheit von konventionell und ökologisch gehaltenen Puten zu vergleichen.
Es wurden die Fleischuntersuchungsbefunde von 307.100 Öko-Puten mit denen von 255.433 konventionell gehaltenen Puten, die im Zeitraum von 2004 bis 2009 an dem selben Schlachthof geschlachtet worden waren. Größtenteils wurde in der Öko-Haltung die auch in der konventionellen Haltung genutzte Rasse B.U.T. Big 6 eingesetzt.
Erfasst wurden der Gesamtverwurf, der Verwurf untauglicher Tierkörper, der Verwurf untauglicher Tierkörperteile sowie der Verwurf untauglicher Organe.
Ergebnisse:
- Der Gesamtverwurf (kg) lag bei Bio-Puten mit 1,9% signifikant höher als konventionell gehaltenen Puten (1,43%).
- Der Verwurf untauglich beurteilter Tierkörper (kg), bezogen auf den Gesamtverwurf (kg), war bei Bio-Puten mit 44,2% signifikant höher als bei konventionell gehaltenen Puten (34,2 %).
- Der Anteil untauglich beurteilter Tierkörperteile (kg), bezogen auf den Gesamtverwurf (kg), war bei Bio-Puten mit 44,9% signifikant geringer als bei konventionell gehaltenen Puten (57,2%).
- Bezüglich des Anteils genussuntauglich beurteilter Organe (kg), bezogen auf den Gesamtverwurf (kg), gab es keine Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Haltungsformen.
- Es wurden mehr ganze Tierkörper von Bio-Puten wegen der Befunde Serositis und Gelenkentzündungen als untauglich beurteilt, während die Verwurfsursachen Hämatome, Verletzungen und infizierte Brustblasen bei konventionell gehaltenen Puten signifikant häufiger auftraten.
- Es treten signifikante geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede bzgl. des Verwurfes ganzer Tierkörper und von Teile der Tierkörper auf.
- Unterschiede zwischen weiblichen und männlichen Puten innerhalb der Gruppen Bio- und konventionell sind signifikant, außer Gelenkentzündungen bei Bio-Tieren. Mit Serositis, Gelenkentzündung und Brustblasen waren am häufigsten männliche Puten aus beiden Haltungssystem betroffen. Die weiblichen Puten aus beiden Haltungsformen sind signifikant höher Hämatomen, Verletzungen und Abszessen betroffen.
Nach den Ergebnissen kann die Erreichung eines besseren Gesundheitsstatus der Öko-Puten im Vergleich mit konventionell gehaltenen Puten nicht bestätigt werden, eher scheint das Gegenteil der Fall zu sein. In der Öko-Haltung traten grundsätzlich die gleichen Gesundheitsprobleme wie in der konventionellen Haltung auf. Als Ursache für dieses Ergebnis muss der Einsatz nicht geeigneter Rassen in der Öko-Haltung diskutiert werden. Auch bliebe zu prüfen, ob die gegenwärtigen Vorschriften der Öko-Haltung für Puten tatsächlich optimale Bedingungen bieten.

This Green IT case study commissioned by Försäkringskassan (FK), the Swedish National Social Insurance Agency, quantifies the environmental performance of the IT infrastructure (IT-IS) in use during 2010 in a lifecycle perspective. Adopting a system view in Green IT analysis can mitigate risks of problem shifts. IT-IS concerns the equipment that enables office automation and external web application services. The size of the FK IT-IS is in the order of 300 branch offices with 14000 pc’s, 2100 printers and a 1 MW data centre hosting 1200 servers, 5 Petabyte of central data storage and serving about 80 key business applications. The carbon footprint of the FK IT-IS in 2010 accounts to 6.5 kiloton CO2-equivalents. The total environmental impact is calculated across 18 themes and expressed as a single indicator eco score amounting to 822.000 ReCiPe points. The contribution of capital goods is large with 44% of the carbon footprint and 47% of the eco score linked to emissions embedded in material equipment. The environmental effects from distributed IT deployed at local office sites, dominate at two thirds of the total FK IT-IS impacts. Important drivers in the local office sites category are the relatively short economic life span of pc equipment and the significant volume of paper consumed in printing activities. Within the data centre category, operational processes dominate the environmental impacts and are linked to intensive power use. In comparison to industry benchmark scores, the data centre infrastructure energy efficiency (DCiE) is relatively low at 57%, or 59% when credited for waste heat utilisation. Airflow containment measures in computer rooms are identified for efficiency improvement. Enhanced airflow controls also act as a prerequisite to better leverage opportunities for free cooling present at the location in northern Europe. With regards to the data centre hosted IT, environmental impacts linked to storage services dominate and remarkably exceed those of servers.<br>Denna fallstudie inom Grön IT på uppdrag av Försäkringskassan (FK) kvantifierar IT-infrastrukturens (IT-IS) miljöprestanda i ett livscykelperspektiv under 2010. Whether consciousness involves an ego is a thorny and complicated question in phenomenology. This chapter defines pure phenomenology and the peculiar way in which the problem of the ego is framed in this approach, then discusses three different approaches to the issue. First, Husserl’s egological account of consciousness is sketched in connection with his analysis of attention. Second, Sartre’s non-egological arguments are examined in detail. There is reason to ask whether his critique successfully applies to the Husserlian conception. Third, Gurwitsch’s non-egological view is considered. It is not clear that Gurwitsch’s non-egological theory of attention can account for the distinction between activity and passivity in consciousness. The chapter then shifts to contemporary debates about the self. The notion of the minimal embodied prereflective self is presented and opposed to alternative views. The chapter highlights several rich and complex questions concerning the ego and the self raised in the phenomenological literature.

The Rose uses pagan myths of a prehistoric Golden Age as a necessarily artificial way of approaching the unthinkable period, a state of pure nature, that pre-existed humans’ entry into culture. The incompatibility of the different poetic versions of primitive myth, taken especially from Ovid and Virgil, suggests their own status as imperfect, artificial epistemological prostheses. The end of the Golden Age is used to understand the emergence of the ego out of a state of communality understood as purely natural, drawing both on natural law and the Christian doctrine of the Fall. Genius’s speech, which plays off different myths of the Golden Age against each other, makes it impossible to overlook the compromised artificiality which necessarily renders all of the Rose’s accounts of the Golden Age fundamentally contingent.

Serious illness often left the body weak and lean, full of the ‘footsteps of disease’; it wasn’t until full strength and flesh had returned that the patient was pronounced back to health. This chapter explores the second stage of recovery in contemporary perceptions, the restoration of strength, or ‘convalescence’. It asks how the patient’s growing strength was measured and promoted, and unveils a concept of convalescent care, ‘analeptics’. The central argument is that both the mechanisms and the measures for the restoration of strength were intimately connected to the ‘non-natural things’, six dietary and life-style factors. The opening sections explain why the body was weak after illness, and categorize the convalescent within contemporary schemes of health. The rest of the chapter is structured around the signs of increasing strength, each of which was associated with a particular non-natural: ‘the final purge’, ‘sleeping through the night’, ‘feeling hungry’, ‘growing cheerful’, and ‘sitting up to going abroad’.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain parenchyma, typically due to a viral infection. Pure encephalitis will lack the signs and symptoms of meningeal irritation (eg, stiff neck and photophobia). New-onset seizures, cognitive deficits, new psychiatric symptoms, lethargy/coma, cranial nerve abnormalities, or movement disorders should alert the clinician to possible encephalitis. It is important to question the patient about foreign travel, immunocompromised state, and potential exposures. Empiric treatment for presumed viral encephalitis is with the antiviral acyclovir. Empiric broad-spectrum antibiotics are also typically given to cover for possible bacterial meningitis. If there are signs of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), neurosurgical consultation should be obtained for possible decompressive craniotomy. Standard therapy for ICP (ie, hyperventilation, steroids, mannitol, hypertonic saline, and elevation of the head of the bed) should also be considered. The most concerning complication of encephalitis is the development of life-threatening cerebral edema with resultant brainstem compression and herniation.

Levinas depicts a pluralism of subjectivity older than consciousness and self-consciousness. He repudiates Heidegger's notion of solitude in order to explore the implications of the Husserlian pure I outside the subject. A hidden Good constitutes the Other in the self: a diremption not at the expense of the unity of the self. Levinas stands with Nietzsche on the side of life which requires and is capable of no justification whatsoever. But for Levinas the totality is ruptured by the thought that there is a unity of self undiminished by its immemorial responsibility for the Other, a unity of self beyond totality. This self containing the Other is the transcendence of the Ego otherwise immanent in Husserl's pure intentionality. Just here Levinas' thought is most perfectly distinguished from Sartre's notion of the transcendence of the Ego as complete exclusion from the immanence of intentionality. The pure I is otherwise than the Hegelian absolute Elastizität: incarnate and inspirited, the "self tight in its own skin." The transubstantiation of Ego to Other has not yet occurred to thought in Levinas, but what does occur here is the altersubstantiation of the I. The Other in the Same is an alteration of essence. It is precisely through thinking the contraction of [the modern] essence [of consciousness] that Levinas thinks otherwise than being, beyond essence, thinks "a thought profounder and 'older' than the cogito." Humanity signifies a "new image" of the Infinite in the preoriginary freedom by which the Self shows the Other mercy.

This chapter investigates how Sartre instigates the first few moves of ‘pure’ immanence. Through following the progression of Sartre’s thought, there is shown a deepening engagement with immanence, which ultimately sets the foundation upon which the later thinkers build. In his early period, Sartre reworks Husserlian intentionality to bring about a repudiation of the transcendental ego. Following from this, in Being and Nothingness and the Critique, he develops a dialectic in which consciousness, while relating to an ‘outside’, is construed as also thoroughly embedded in that outside through the subject-body of the flesh and relations of desire. From this comes a conceptualisation of the In-itself and For-itself as simulacra or topological variations of a more primordial intertwining or fabric of univocal Being. In this sense, we are immediately taken away from the subject of social contract theory, insofar as this presumes an asocial self, and the notion of identity as the sine qua non of politics, insofar as this presumes the terrain of an inexplicable transcendent Other. This brings with it a new take on politics as an ethical practice – one that will be taken up and extended by the other three thinkers – in which we do not look for a transcendent outside or fracture/break in immanence through which to ground resistance, but rather work through and experiment with our situation or condition.

The formability of galvannealed (GA), hot-dip pure Zn galvanized (GI), electrogalvanized (EG), and electrogalvanized prephosphated (EGP) interstitial free (IF) steel sheets was studied. The phases in the Fe-Zn system were characterized using electronic and optic microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. Behavior of the Zn coating when subjected to stretching, bending and drawing was also assessed. Comparison between the performance of large-scale industrial production of GA, GI, EG and EGP coated steels was made possible. The GI steels presented the best results, due to the predominantly basal crystallographic texture, lower friction coefficient with commercial oils and better press-forming response in the pressure range of 135-180kgf/cm2. It was also observed that the phosphate present in the EGP steels protected the structure of the EG coating, reducing the friction coefficient. Lastly, differences between the coatings, regarding stretching, bending and drawing, were confirmed.

The control of pure feedback system, which is widely used but has non-affine property, has always been an important and challenging problem. In order to achieve precise tracking control of pure feedback system through improving the disturbance rejection ability of existing reinforcement learning algorithm, a reinforcement learning (RL) control strategy based on extended state observer (ESO) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, the extended state observer can reject the total disturbances and transform the pure feedback system which is in an input-output predictor from to overcome the non-causal problem into a cascade integral form. This allows the continuous reinforcement learning strategy of the actor-critic (AC) structure not to depend on the detailed model information, which makes it practically data-driven. It is worth noting that, in order to further improve the ability to track the changing reference trajectory, a novel curvature acceleration factor is proposed, which can adjust the learning speed of the reinforcement learning controller according to the curvature of the reference trajectory. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulation results.

This paper presents an operational energy optimization method for pure electric ground vehicles (EGVs) based on terrain profile preview. Dynamic programming is applied to obtain the global optimal energy point for torque distributions. The vehicles considered in this paper are powered by batteries and in-wheel motors. Different from the fuel optimization methods of conventional hybrid electric vehicles which adjust battery power supplies, a pure EGV actuated by in-wheel motors has only one energy source, whose power consumption is mainly determined by the torque distributions among in-wheel motors in terms of their operating efficiencies. Moreover, the optimization results show that different terrains will influence the optimal torque distributions and energy savings.

Metal-based microchannel heat exchangers (MHEs) offer potential solutions to applications demanding high heat flux removal, such as cooling of high-performance microelectronic and energy-efficient lighting modules. Efficient fabrication of metal-based MHEs and quantitative flow and heat transfer measurements on them are critical for establishing the economic and technical feasibility of such devices. Adopting metal-based MHEs in many applications demands quantification of flow and heat transfer performance with application-relevant coolants, e.g. ethylene glycol (EG)/water mixtures rather than pure water. As a first step in this direction, we report here fabrication and assembly of all-Cu MHE prototypes, as well as results of flow and heat transfer testing using pure EG and pure water as the fluid medium. Results of heat transfer testing indicate sensitivity of overall heat transfer performance to entrance length effects, which in the case of pure EG, is significantly influenced by its physical properties under the testing condition.

Since pure CO2 as refrigerant has some disadvantages failing to meet requirements, binary blends of CO2 (or R744) with other eco-friendly working fluids, R290, R1270, R170, RE170 and HFC134a are proposed in this paper to be used for medium temperature heat pump systems. The eco-friendly refrigerant mixtures can reduce the heat rejection pressure as that for pure CO2, and meanwhile suppress the flammability, explosivity as that for pure HCs or RE170. Based on the pinch point of heat transfer, the numerical models of heat pump cycle using CO2-based mixture are developed. With a comprehensive consideration of heating coefficient of performance (COPh), optimum heat rejection pressure, volumetric heating capacity, discharge temperature, the binary mixture CO2/R290 is determined as the most suitable working fluid for the given heat pump application. Compared to pure CO2, the optimum heat rejection pressure of mixture for 95/5, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20 is decreased by 0.82, 0.94, 1.06 and 1.86MPa respectively for heat sink outlet temperature of 65°C. The experimental testrig is designed and set up for the transcritical heat pump system. The experimental study with different CO2 mass fraction has been carried out, which conducts a study on the variations of heat pump performance, component’s mass fraction and working fluid charge. The experimental results validated the CO2/R290 natural mixture proposed in theory. The experimental results provide useful references on the optimization and improvement of CO2/R290 heat pump testrig.

Abstract This paper provides fundamentals of how to energy-efficiently pass through signalized intersections while avoiding any rear-end collisions with leading vehicles. In our previous works [1, 2], analytical solutions with and without second-order pure state constraints imposed by the preceding vehicle were presented; these showed significant energy saving potential for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) compared to human-driven vehicles. However, these solutions were derived assuming that the desired distance headway policy does not include a speed change over a predictive horizon, and that the preceding vehicle has constant acceleration. We use the desired time headway policy that includes the speed change to define the first-order pure state constraint. We then derive analytical solutions using the direct adjoining method based on Pontryagin’s minimum principle. We also present a novel solver to compute energy-optimal and collision-free state trajectories by accounting for a piecewise constant acceleration of the preceding vehicle without using any numerical optimization methods that require initial guesses. For simple scenarios with one intersection, we analyze how the novel solver allows CAVs to smoothly pass through the signalized intersection and then reach a desired cruising speed. We also use a simulation framework based on high-fidelity powertrain models to validate its effectiveness based on energy savings when driving on real-world urban routes.
