Abstract:
In the early 1990's, I argued that the real issues, those at the crux of tourism impact problems, were not being addressed - pertinent questions ignored amidst the blossoming euphoria of green rhetoric. A process emerged in tourism development whereby ego-enhancing, politically correct sound bites drowned out the voice of reason, namely common sense. Wonderfully self-satisfying, this proved a smug and timely convenience as politicians, planners, 'travellers' and increasingly (even) many tourism academics appeared to see problems without answers as an anathema. This thesis explores the nature of the ego, drawing upon Christian and secular conceptions, in order to determine whether it is something to be affirmed or denied. Contemporary perspectives which either overvalue the individual self, or retort by refuting it, are questioned in the light of psychology, spirituality and Christian doctrine. I have been vexed by the existence of two seemingly opposing views within Christian popular culture. Those who look to the mystical tradition, the Spirituality of the Desert, claim that self-denial is the path to spiritual enlightenment and discovery of the tr

The supposed synonymity of obsessions and intrusive thoughts is critically examined. It is suggested that there may be distinct differences in the appraisal of classic intrusive thoughts which feature aggressive or sexualised content and the appraisal of contamination fears. This is significant for both the current definition of obsessions and to the cognitive model proposed by Salkovskis (1985, 1989). Following a review of the research into the relationship between intrusive thoughts and obsessions, Salkovskis's cognitive-behavioural model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (Salkovskis, 1

'The Besieged Ego' critically appraises the representation, or mediation, of identity in contemporary film and television shows through a thorough analysis of split and fragmentary characters.
