Abstract:
Abstract This book treats myths from all parts of the word, first from a cultural and then from a more comparative perspective. How do myths of the ancient Egyptians or Greeks, for instance, reflect the realities of the Egyptian and Greek cultures? When compared, how do they reveal certain universal themes or motifs that point to larger transcultural issues, such as the place of the human species in creation or the nature of deity as a concept? This book is organized around the universal or near universal motifs: deities, creation, the flood, the trickster, and the hero. Myths from Greek, Egyp

Abstract:
This chapter provides a critical analysis of Demotic and Greek sources concerning private associations of Hellenistic Egypt, putting them into perspective in order to overcome the traditional divide into Greek and Egyptian associations. Apart from language choice—which in the case of Greek does not necessarily imply specific cultural identity—associations in Egypt display no fundamental features to uphold the traditional view, which should therefore be discarded. This chapter argues that instead of being forcefully segregated into Egyptian and Greek, associations should simply be treated as ‘a

Abstract:
This paper looks into the relationship between Greek medicine and Egyptian culture in Tebtynis. Cultural interaction in this context has often been interpreted from a perspective that privileges the status of Greek culture: Hellenistic medical treatises (and other texts) were imported to Tebtynis to ‘improve’ the local community and local health-care. This paper looks at two aspects of Greek medical culture at the site: theoretical Hippokratic treatises and pharmaceutical recipes. These medical documents were associated with the Egyptian community in the village, especially the famous sanctuar

Abstract:
Supporting the current trends toward document-based teaching, this book introduces the reader to the multifaceted world of ancient Egypt through revealing excerpts from 51 texts written by Egyptians themselves. A wealth of evidence survives to tell the stories of ancient Egypt, including monuments, artifacts, paintings, sculptures, human remains, and literature. But there is yet another way to access this fascinating culture–through original writings that span the period from circa 3100 BCE to 400 CE. This book's 51 documents include schoolboys' letters and exercises, prayers, hymns, love poem

Abstract:
This chapter treats the romance that we know of as Joseph and Aseneth, the earliest parts of which may be Hellenistic. It is an extraordinary sequel to the Potiphar’s wife story, in which Joseph marries a native Egyptian woman, who then converts to Judaism. The romance emerges as a complex meditation on the challenges of intermarriage, in the context of biblical prohibition (and, implicitly, the Egyptian practice of sibling marriage), but also as a text that itself sits between cultures, blending Jewish, Greek and Egyptian elements.
