Abstract:
It has been said that the ancient Egyptians were raised to tolerate all kinds of toil and hardship; they nevertheless also liked to amuse themselves with comic relief in their everyday life. For example, ancient Egyptian drawing can be quite accurate and at times even spirited. What scholars have described as caricatures are as informative and artistic as supposed serious works of art. Ancient Egyptians have left countless images representing religious, political, economic, and/or social aspects of their life. Scenes in Egyptian tombs could be imitated on ostraca (potsherds) that portray animals as characters performing what would normally be human roles, behaviors, or occupations. These scenes reveal the artists’ sense of comedy and humor and demonstrate their freedom of thought and expression to reproduce such lighthearted imitations of religious or funeral scenes. This paper will focus on a selection of drawings on ostraca as well as three papyri that show animals—often dressed in human garb and posing with human gestures—performing parodies of human pursuits (such as scribes, servants, musicians, dancers, leaders, and herdsmen).

Abstract The multidisciplinary approach to different dyeing techniques of the papyri of Leiden (P.Leid. X) and Stockholm (P.Holm.) is entangled with Greco-Egyptian alchemy; yet, it is not an impediment for the recipes – or the processes described in them – to originate from an artisanal environment. In this regard, the lexical study of these recipes is the key to understanding the technical backgrounds of Greco-Egyptian alchemy. With this aim, this paper analyses the verb ὀδοντίζω (odontizō), which appears in a number of ink recipes of the Leiden and Stockholm papyri with a very technical meaning. The comparison to some Latin sources will help us to better understand its meaning and will lead us to explore the technical field from whence the recipes in which this verb appears came: ancient book production.

Abstract:
AbstractThe numerous manuscripts of John among the earliest Christian papyri have given rise to discussion and speculation. It has been suggested, on the grounds of an alleged preference for the Fourth Gospel among gnostics, that the high number of papyri of John compared to other gospels would favour Walter Bauer’s thesis of the ‘heterodox’ character of early Christian Egypt. The obscurity which veils the origins of the early Egyptian Church allows for conjectures of this kind. However, recent studies on the reception of the Fourth Gospel in the early Church and newly published papyri show that the abundance of early manuscripts of John is not necessarily indicative of the gnostic nature of early Christianity in Egypt. This paper attempts to shed additional light on the issue by comparing early papyri of John with other pieces of Christian evidence.

Abstract:
✓ In contemporary anatomical nomenclature terms have often been derived from an ancient perspective of the human body. The term “spinal column” was used in ancient Egypt, symbolized by the “djet column.” The authors discuss the first appearance of the term “spinal column,” taking the ancient Egyptian interaction between religion and daily life into consideration, and they describe the different segments of the spinal column known to the ancient Egyptians. Inspection of medical papyri provides insight into the knowledge held by ancient Egyptian physicians and embalmers. It is assumed that hieroglyphs were used to depict the different vertebral regions of the spinal column (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). The knowledge was gleaned, in fact, in pursuit of religious goals. The djet might be an example of how anatomical knowledge can improve understanding of a symbol that was previously thought to have a primarily religious meaning. The authors maintain that modern medical knowledge is useful for making a more precise and anatomically correct interpretation of the presumed sense intended by the ancient Egyptians.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is an editio princeps with transcriptions, translations and commentaries of twenty-two previously unedited papyrus Greek texts from Oxyrhynchus in Middle Egypt, all edited or assigned to the Roman Period, namely from the first century B. C. to the fourth A. D. It offers a balanced mixture of assorted Literary, Subliterary texts and Documents. Specifically, on the literary side, Homer and Demosthenes, the most popular authors in Egypt, are represented with one and five pieces respectively. All these texts are interesting with respect to the textual tradition of these particular authors. The rest of the literary and subliterary pieces are `new texts', including Scholia Minora to Iliad 1, Commentary on Odyssey 3, a fragment of the lost author Dictys Cretensis, historical and oratorical prose, and two very short fragments. An eclectic collection of nine documents is edited in the second part of the thesis: five official, namely two declarations of sheep and a census-return of early date, a petition and an order to summons, and four private documents, that is an acknowledgement of indebtedness, a sale of land, and two letters. All these documents are of interest, since they provide information regarding economy, admimistration, legal system, prosopography, literacy, language and other aspects of a hellenised provincial society under Roman rule.

Abstract:
Medicine and healing, constantly changing through time, have always been important aspects of life. The desire to avoid the inevitable state of death has driven mankind in all corners of the world to develop certain ways of prolonging life from a very early time. While it is recognized in the modern day that disease and infection are caused by microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, the ancient Egyptians believed that gods, demons, and spirits played the main roles in causing such troubles. Therefore, it does not seem strange that, besides being devoted to the use of various natural drugs and materials in healing treatments, the ancient Egyptians also incorporated religion and magic into their treatment methods. Magic, religion, and medicine enjoyed an equal symbiosis all throughout the Pharaonic times, and one cannot easily separate one from the other. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is any kind of systematics in the way magic was used in ancient Egyptian healing treatments, specifically in the treatments involving incantations and spells. The comparison of the relevant treatments in relation to each other will be conducted both within and in between the individual papyri. The surviving ancient medical papyri are a handful of texts ranging approximately from 1800 BC to 300 AD and give us a precious idea of what the arts of medicine and healing could have looked like in the ancient Egyptian world. A chosen number of the ancient papyri, dated to the 18th dynasty, will be studied in order to better understand the concept of healing and, more significantly, the importance of the power in words. The main sources used are the ancient material of the medical papyri themselves, complemented by a knowledgebase built on the plentiful previous research on the subject available. Numerous studies on the subject of both medicine and magic in ancient Egypt, as well as on the surviving medical papyri have been conducted since the end of the 19th century. The collection of ‘Grundriss der medizin der alten Ägypter’, consisting of nine volumes, was published between the years of 1954 to 1973 and still stands as the most extensive study on the combined ancient Egyptian medical papyri. Several works on the different individual papyri, mainly the Edwin Smith papyrus and the Ebers papyrus, have also been published throughout the years. While there does not appear to have been any intentional systematics in the way the ancient Egyptians conducted their treatment methods containing incantations, there are similarities to be observed. It seems clear that rational medicine and magical incantations and rites, together with the fundamental element of religion, was the ideal combination in the treatment of any condition or complaint.

Campbell, Jacqueline Michele. "An assessment of the pharmaceutical and therapeutic merit of remedies within the Kahun, Edwin Smith, Ebers and Chester Beatty ancient Egyptian medical papyri." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.646385.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to assess the pharmaceutical and therapeutic merit of ancient Egyptian remedies, employing analytical and historical methods, to demonstrate that the Egyptians were practising a credible and reproducible form of pharmacy as early as the 16th century BCE, 1800 years before Galen, the acknowledged 'father of pharmacy'. The 1000 prescriptions in the medical papyri, which provide the literary research source, are renowned for their uncertainty in interpretation and translation of drugs. Consequently, although much has been published, the materia medica of ancient Egypt is questionable and the efficacy of prescriptions, uncertain. Verification of the drug substances was sought in archaeobotanical evidence to determine availability, dynastic prevalence and predominance at the time of the papyri. Attestation was sought in contemporary pharmacognosy of plants and their clinical application, to measure the medicinal uses in ancient Egypt. Efficacy was established by comparing the ancient remedies against modem pharmaceutical protocols including drug source, extraction, pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, pharmacology, formulation, preparation, dosing regime, administration and therapeutic activity. Most drug sources have been verified, some 25% were determined to be of improbable use, alternative drugs being proposed. Significantly, 50% of the drug sources used by the ancient Egyptians, remain in use today, albeit that many are now synthesised. The first scientific estimate of pharmaceutical merit demonstrates 64% of remedies in the medical papyri have therapeutic value in physiological or physical action, 3% are toxic, 1.5% subtherapeutic, 20% undetermined and the remainder, have no known therapeutic activity. It is concluded that the application of archaeobotany and pharmacognosy may assist the identification of plants once available to ancient Egyptian medicine and consequently to endorse the ancient texts. Furthermore, the efficacy, reproducibility and protocols used in the prescriptions, qualify the ancient Egyptians to be recognised as the progenitors of pharmacy practise.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Greek Magical Papyri are a collection of magical texts from Graeco-Roman Egypt. Its contents display a mixture of different traditions, mainly Egyptian and Greek. A noticeable feature in these texts is the so-called voces magicae, mysterious looking words with no apparent lexical meaning. This dissertation focuses on analyzing the voces magicae in their textual context in order to better comprehend how this feature appears on incantations. A database was established with vox magica taken from the spells. The voces magicae were analyzed according to the words next to them. The different contexts in which voces magicae were found were discussed with examples from our corpus. Based on this analysis, it was possible to raise a few hypotheses on the nature of magical words and what kind of function they have on spells.

Swart, Lisa. "A stylistic comparison of selected visual representations on Egyptian funerary papyri of the 21st Dynasty and wooden funerary stelae of the 22nd Dynasty (c. 1069 -715 B. C. E.)." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/19897.

Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines illustrated funerary papyri and wooden funerary stelae for information they can provide about the organization of artists in the 21st and 22nd Dynasty. It is an inquiry into the relationship between visual representation on the funerary papyri of the 21st Dynasty and wooden stelae of the 22nd Dynasty. An attempt is made to determine whether it is possible to identify the work of individual artists and workshops involved in producing the illustrated funerary papyri and wooden stelae, and in what way they may be related. This study covers a representative sample of workshops or individuals from around the beginning of the 21st Dynasty to the early 22nd Dynasty. Methodology involved undertaking the research on a descriptive and interpretative/comparative level. Panofsky's (1972: passim) model for describing pictorial works was used to interpret the iconography. The comparisons between the papyri and stelae were based upon a combination of the models developed by Freed (1996: passim) and Niwinski (1989a: passim). These models functioned as a control or corrective in order to formulate an interpretation. It was possible to definitively place 208 manuscripts out of 214 papyri into seven individual workshops. This was based upon their stylistic similarities and corresponding content. Papyri Workshop 1 is comprised of fifty-six manuscripts, and constitutes the largest group. The highest quality manuscripts were produced in this workshop, which was patronized by the high priests of Amun and their families. Papyri Workshop 2 is the smallest group consisting of only seven manuscripts. These two workshops contain the earliest manuscripts, which were generally executed in the Ramesside tradition. Papyri Workshop 3 contains the second largest grouping with fifty-two, and Papyri Workshop 4 consists of eleven. The majority of the members of this workshop belong to a homogenous, almost analogous group, in terms of content and composition. In the twenty-five manuscripts that belong to Papyri Workshop 5, it can be observed that the artists have taken complete liberties with the mass of iconography at their disposal. They have adapted and transformed the existing symbols into new compositions, so that no two manuscripts are alike. Papyri Workshop 6 is comprised of thirty manuscripts, and Papyri Workshop 7 has twenty. As opposed to Workshop 5, these two workshops display an economy of style and execution. They are also generally outlined in black. Furthermore, several subgroups are evident in the workshops, especially those that span many decades, such as Papyri Workshop 1 and 3.From a comprehensive examination of 103 stelae, it was possible to group 100 stelae into nine workshops. It is important to note that Stelae Workshop 1 is, in fact, linked to Papyri Workshop 1, to which thirteen stelae can be attributed. The stelae contain the same attributes and style of execution as the papyri. Stelae Workshop 2 consists of fifteen stelae, these are skilfully executed, and appear to be custom-made for the deceased. Workshop 3 comprises of fourteen stelae. Stelae Workshop 4 contains five, and Workshop 5 has nine. In contrast to Stelae Workshop 1, the principal representations within the stelae from Stelae Workshops 2 to 5 are generally standardized in form and format. Stelae Workshop 6 has six, while 7 and 8 are the two largest workshops with sixteen members each. These three workshops represent a general degradation of proficiency, culminating in a provincial folk-art quality of Stelae Workshop 7 and 8. Stelae Workshop 8 represents the final transition in style and format to the stelae of the Late Period. Stelae Workshop 9 is comprised of five stelae. The style of execution corresponds to the first phase of the Late Period stelae style.

Abstract:
AbstractThroughout history, sites of high societal values, such as temples, tombs or palaces were mainly constructed through the digging/carving of rocks, built on hills or plateaus, or through the usage of carved/cut displaced rocks. Ancient designers/engineers/workers usually chose construction sites as to facilitate the building or the carving of stones, while, at the same time, serving the purpose of the building/constructions. In Egypt, throughout the ancient Egyptian Civilization, Egyptians have chosen to carve their temples and tombs in the soft limestone, shales and sandstones that are covering most of the modern Egypt, whereas in few temples and tombs, hard igneous and metamorphic rocks were used as ornament material for tombs and statutes. In this paper, we will present an account of the development of landslide risk assessment for various cultural heritage sites around Egypt, for different eras of Egyptian history and different sites. This paper aims at discussing different case studies and success stories of landslides and block movements hazards assessment around or inside Egyptian Cultural Heritage sites.

Abstract:
Abstract One day in the year 270 a young Egyptian, then ‘eighteen or even twenty years old’, ‘considered, while he walked home, how the apostles, forsaking everything, followed the Saviour’. This day not only changed the young man’s life, but it made him, through the work of Athanasius, into the pater eremitorum, the archetypal Desert Father, whose sufferings and labours kindled the imagination for generations to comc. However, at this fateful moment Antony was not yet the solitary hermit. Though recently orphaned, he had ‘one quite young sister’. Faced with the dilemma of having to abandon either his sister or his desire to ‘forsake everything’, Antony found an interesting solution.

Abstract:
The article analyzes five exercises (R50, R48, R41, R42 and R43) from the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (de-posited in the British Museum) that comes from the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt and is one of the best known examples of ancient Egyptian mathematics. One exercise (K2) from the Kahun Mathematical Papyrus (British Museum) is also discussed. The exercise R50 shows how Egyptian scribes calculated the area of a cir-cle with a given diameter. The exercise R48 compares the area of a circle with a given diameter to that of its cir-cumscribing square. Four other exercises demonstrate how to calculate the volume of a cylindrical grain silo with a given diameter and height. The author explains the algorithm which was used by Egyptian calculators. He also offers three ways how they could find a fairly accurate calculation, and how they approximated the value for π and compared Egyptian approximation with the approximation using by Babylonian scribes as well as Greek mathematicians.

Abstract:
There are increasing concerns on the environmental impact of port operations which resulted in pressing global issues such as adopting sustainable technologies to reduce environmental harmful impacts on ports. From the sustainability perspective, a port should manage and balance three aspects which are economic, social, and environmental impacts. Using Internet of things (IoT) technology could minimize the environmental harmful impacts on ports and increase their sustainability. This paper aims at investigating the impact of applying IoT technology on Egyptian ports' sustainability. A semi structured interview was conducted with a representative sample of different stakeholders (government, port authority, freight forwarders, importers and exporters), upon which the main challenges and obstacles to adopt IoT technology in the Egyptian ports were identified. The paper concluded with suggestions and recommendations to help practitioners to consider the applicability of IoT technology as a sustainability driver in the Egyptian ports.

Abstract:
The rooftop is a vivid spatial culture in Egyptian cities and an integral part of the urban fabric, yet it has not been integrated within the urban design educational aspect. This paper aims to highlight the importance of facilitating rooftop activation in architecture and urbanism studios, stressing the vital role of rooftops as a spatial prophylactic design in the post-pandemic city. The paper embraces an exploratory approach through which the reader gains a theoretical insight into the nature of urban design education in Egyptian schools. It adopts Nikos Salingaros’ concept of living patterns, i.e. creating socio-geometric design patterns to establish a healthy environment. The findings propose a novel design theory, prophylaxis, which can be facilitated in design studios to address post-pandemic cities. Additionally, they reveal the expected role of architects and urbanists in tackling inequalities in designing spaces.

The research paper includes exposure to the constitutional protection of personal data, which is one of the most important peculiarities of legal personality. We will continue to clarify the uses of data in dealing with digital banks to avoid the risks of breaching them, in confirmation of the constitutional texts that protect them.&#x0D; Uses of personal data outside geographical boundaries require specific legislative texts to protect the rights of the customer, and this is what was recently stipulated in Egyptian legislation. Big data is important in decision-making, especially economic decisions. This is why I spoke about its definition, sources, classification and importance in promoting sustainable development goals. The research was divided into two sections as follows: «The first topic: Constitutional protection of data confidentiality in Egyptian law», «Banks compete in big data».

Abstract With the collapse of the Eastern block, once Egypt’s major industry supplier for machinery and spare parts, and the lack of skilled manpower, the Egyptian industry is finding it difficult to maintain its machinery and industrial base and to compete with the much more sophisticated and coordinated industries abroad. The cutoff of supply of maintenance parts from the Eastern Block, prompt the use of modern reverse engineering (RE) methods in the capturing the geometrical configuration and fabrication of rare maintenance parts, in support of the Egyptian Industry. This paper demonstrates, as a proof of concept, the use of the technology of RE in the fabrication of parts. The success of the experiment initiated a much wider application to the technology, that of patterns making in support of the casting industry. This will provide an accurate and expeditious means to properly maintain industrial plants and produce compatible spare pails urgently needed.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to develop/investigate an innovative approach for affordable houses for the medium income families, forming the major category of the Egyptian society using Design-Builder simulation and emphasizing the mechanical HVAC systems and their impact on energy consumption. Design-Builder ( a simulation user-friendly interface) for Energy-Plus (an energy simulation engine for energy modeling in buildings, heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating and other energy flows) is utilized to create a “virtual environment” in which the HVAC system effect is studied. Extensive field surveys are made to collect data regarding occupancy behavior, light and equipment schedules and other mechanical systems usage in such application. The majority of surveys indicated that split system (heat pumps) + mechanical ventilation (exhaust fan for bathroom and kitchen) are most common in the Egyptian society. The subject facility is located in Cairo, Egypt. The layout of this building/house has been developed by research architects in the Housing &amp; Building National Research Centre HRBC taking into their consideration the medium income citizens, [1] needs and limited budget, the energy efficiency concepts as well as the previous work carried in the field of sustainable architecture. The individual buildings are formed of three floors containing twelve 100 m2 apartments. Each apartment consists of three bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a lounge.

This paper summarizes the results of a simulation analysis to determine the effectiveness of daylighting in reducing electrical energy consumption for office buildings in Egypt. Specifically, the impact on daylighting performance is investigated of window size, building size, daylighting control, and glazing type for three geographical locations in Egypt. It was determined that a window to wall area ratio of 0.20 minimizes the total annual electricity use for office buildings in three Egyptian locations, Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan. A simplified analysis method is developed based on the analysis results to estimate the annual electrical energy savings attributed to daylighting.

Abstract:
Abstract Decarbonization became a crucial topic in all industries especially those working in the energy sector in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the climate change threat. Energy efficiency has a significant impact on decarbonization, this was clearly announced during COP27, when the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has announced the energy efficiency strategy in Egyptian Energy Sector during one of the thematic days that was called "Decarbonization Day" and all the companies started to prepare energy efficiency improvement strategy that is aligned with the strategy of the corresponding ministry. In this paper, an integrated approach for energy efficiency improvement in industrial cooling towers to maximize process and production efficiency, a case study in Sidpec, one of the giant petrochemical plants in Egypt is introduced. The cooling tower optimization is one of the identified opportunities in the company's energy efficiency improvement roadmap which is the backbone of the company decarbonization strategy. Demand for cooling water has become more pronounced, both in winter and summer because of climate change, and a growing number of warm days which cost the industry millions of dollars annually. In this study, energy consumption issues were resolved in cooling tower in an efficient way with zero capital cost investment. A 4-step approach for improvement opportunities was applied and was supported by a developed cooling tower simulation model. This approach was successfully implemented and reached the right decision for how a cooling tower optimization and considerable cost reduction can be achieved.

Abstract:
The global population is expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050. The ‘second wave of urbanization’ indicates that developing world cities are growing much faster than their developed world counterparts, and most of these people will live in African and Asian cities where city growth rates are the highest. This, ‘second wave of urbanization’ is a core driver of change in the 21st century and follows the first wave of urbanization that took place in developed countries from 1750, lasted 200 years and resulted in the urbanization of 400 million people. By contrast, the second wave of urbanization is projected to see over 3 billion additional people living in cities in a time-span of just 80 years, bringing unprecedented challenges to city doorsteps. In the current era of development, urban sustainability is threatened by heightened global uncertainty and change. In broad terms, these changes consist of the following global factors: economic change, scarcity of resources, rapid technological and social change, environmental and climate change effects. These drivers of change have broad reach, and threaten multiple sectors — such as food, water, energy, transport and waste — that are critical for urban sustainability. In response, this paper discusses cities’ transition to urban energy sustainability and the role of infrastructures, with focus on transportation planning. The paper highlights the case of Egypt as an example of developing countries. The objectives of the paper are; firstly to identify the different factors affecting Egyptian cities’ transition to sustainability, and secondly to analyze the strategic urban planning process in Egypt which is a bottom-up participatory approach leading to urban sustainability. The paper presents a case study from Egypt, illustrating the preparation of a future urban strategic plan for a small Egyptian city. The case study shows how participatory approach can result in innovative solutions leading to sustainable urban energy planning with focus on transportation.

Osman, Yomna M. Fisheries and fishing boat building traditions in Egypt during the Islamic period. Honor Frost Foundation, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.33583/mags2021.01.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a lack of information about fisheries and fishing boat building traditions in Egypt during the Islamic era (starting18 AH /639 AD/CE), as most sources from this period only focus on commercial or military activities. Therefore, this research refers to the types of boats that were recorded by foreign travelers to Egypt during the period under study. This report highlights that the use of rafts continued in Egypt throughout the Islamic era, as illustrated by Captain Frederick Ludwig Norden the Younger during his travels on the Nile with the Danish Navy in 1737. He noted that the Egyptians used rafts for fishing and for crossing the Nile. In addition, papyrus boats were widely used for fishing and river crossings in the ancient pharaonic era, a tradition that continued into the Islamic period. Finally, wooden boats were also built for the purpose of fishing.
