Abstract:
This article traces the connections between defiant femininity, indeterminacy, and the theme of secrecy in Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin's collection The Boys of Bluehill (2015). In particular, it analyses the secret as the main poetic device used by Ní Chuilleanáin to articulate the gaps and absences within totalitarian, essentialized discourses such as History. In her poetry, secrecy – manifested as silence, uncertainty, marginality and alterity – emerges as the space of peripheral voices and experiences, buried and silenced by official accounts of Ireland's past. As the unavowable manifestation of

Abstract:
Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin often writes about journeys and quests, the focus in these poems is not on the destination but on the voyage itself. A poem called “A Midwinter Prayer,” first published in the poet’s 1972 collection, Acts and Monuments, depicts a journey that takes place not so much in space but rather in time. The poem spans not only a part of the year from Samhain to spring, but also takes the reader from pre-Christian times through the dawn of Christianity into the future of prophecies. This is achieved by an intricate system of allusions and interweaving of various subtexts that my e

This article explores the way in which Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin uses perception and perspective in her poetry to transcend the boundaries that separate reality from the worlds of imagination, folklore and spirituality, with a particular interest in colour and the visual. It will also be argued that language is one of the fundamental tools the poet uses to analyse the otherness and the difference between contrasting dimensions, and that the margin that divides them is a significant space in itself.

The islands of Ireland are shaped by their relationships with land and sea. This book is a study of the various and changing ways in which literature has drawn the coast in lines that shape the contours of cultural experience. The literary and historical study of the sea has swelled in the last decade, as has an interest in the littoral and the archipelagic. Beginning with the early works of William Butler Yeats, this book travels through the diverse hydroscapes of Irish literature from the late nineteenth century to the present, framing writers and artists from James Joyce to Anne Enright in

If the coast and sea are to be more than settings for the play of literature, and if in doing so become the fabric of an aesthetic whose origins are in the interplay between water and land, then something more is to be read into art than a juxtaposition between fluidity and form. Liquidity is a condition of continual engagement, surface and depth, volume and elevation, are the dimensions of a literature that can hold a multiple consciousness in mind, the art work an astrolabe, not a map, its contours marked by soundings, its horizons by visions. This chapter shows how poets Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin dissent from both the longstanding orthodoxy of the Catholic Church and the newly ascendant orthodoxy of secular neoliberalism. Writing in the Irish language, itself a pocket of resistance to the bureaucratic languages of capitalism, Ní Dhomhnaill and Ní Chuilleanáin call on relics or ‘ruins’ of the past, such as the ‘síscéal’ (fairy tale) and the keen, to challenge the reigning ideology of growth and progress.
