Full textThis work examines the factors influencing the characteristics of informal settlements. Hypothetically, the morphology and other physical characteristics of informal settlements can be attributed to the effect determinable factors, which function with predictable regularities, despite a locally and culturally specific framework. Examined are those regularities, which are related to the formation of informal urban growth, and which are expressed in the morphology and further physical characteristics of informal settlements. Constant and variable factors are differentiated when examining their influence on informal urban morphologies. It is discovered that most factors can be influenced on the level of politics and legislation and therefore, the formation and the physical characteristics of informal settlements can be steered. Planning recommendations for fast, informally growing cities can be formulated and the consequences of planning and policy decisions can be predicted equally. Nearly all action and planning decisions must consider the local juridical system and specific conditions of land ownership. The research clearly shows that the physical form of informal urban development, i.e. morphology and townscape, is directly connected to the given land ownership system in a country in general, and to the land rights specifically for settled land. In other words, current as well as former land ownership conditions in a country influence the physical characteristics of the informal settlements. In principle, the land law determines type, extent and functioning of plot allocation and transfer processes; and indirectly, the type and degree of nonconformity to this legal defines the type, extent and functioning of the informal land market. The research is based on case studies in five African cities with varying legal, administrative, historic and cultural frameworks, and which are currently exposed to a rapid process of urbanization, which has started only recently. In Africa, there are distinguishable juridical systems, which partially result from colonial history. Above all, the analysis is based on original material, which was gathered by the author during field research. There are only few analyses of informal settlements, which take an architectural or planning perspective, and those are limited to individual settlements. This work now stresses the interrelation of different aspects in the framework with physical settlement characteristics, while analyzing the respective range of informal settlement forms for each case example

Full textSearching for determinants for the successful integration into the general job market, participants in a rehabilitation program for the mental handicapped carried out by REHAaktiv darr GmbH were studied qualitatively und quantitatively. This was a prospective longitudinal or cohort study. The more extensive, quantitative part of the study consists of an analysis of the demographic, psychodiagnostic and personal (leisure time, financial situation) data ascertained from n=206 participants with regard to the variable objectives of the successful integration immediately after completion of the scheme, after six months and one year as well as after dropping out of the scheme for health reasons as well as the number of days absent for health reasons during the scheme. Predictors of a successful integration are high intelligence, high school graduation, the presence of a partner, a mid to high level of commitment, good strategies of control as soon as a higher income in the beginning of the program. Medication, advanced age, vocational disability and subjectively higher assessment of the psychosomatic troubles were identified as predictors for dropping out of the scheme for health reasons. The number of absences due to illness was predicted by the predictors psychosomatic disorders as well as the absence of a diagnosis schizophrenia. The second part of the study consisted of the assessment of the qualitative interviews with six participants who were successfully integrated and six who were not. The result that emerged emphasized the amount of support from the REHAaktiv personnel “felt” by the participants, a lack of career orientation on their part as well as the great importance of the practical training and the seminar group. Individual differences with respect to the success of the integration could be attributed to the importance of work, the ability to deal with stress and mental attitude to the scheme.

Full textAgainst the background of saturated markets overloaded with information the relevance of food´s regional origin for consumer behavior is discussed. Results of scientific surveys show an increasing relevance of this attribute for marketing. According to retail management, however, the buying patterns do in many cases not confirm the expressed preference and willingness to pay more for regional products. This indicates a discrepancy between attitude and behavior. The aim of this study is to examine the attitude-behavior relationship in case of regional food products. Attitude and image theories and the way they are embedded in country of origin research, as well as approaches of price research form the theoretical basis of investigation. Secondary analytical research shows, that the relationship of attitude and behavior especially depends on personal and situational factors. The empirical research is based on complementary use of standardized consumer surveys and experiments at point of sale. The surveys focus on the food image of the federal state of Brandenburg and the region of Spreewald among Berlin´s consumers. These constructs are determined using attitude-oriented image operationalization and qualitative questions. Buying intentions are established by means of simulated situations where consumers are asked to decide what to buy. Research of consumer behavior depending on a product´s origin and price is carried out in experiments at point of sale at three places in Berlin. The results reveal positive food images for Brandenburg and in particular for Spreewald. This implies a basically positive buying intention for the products with these origins. The comparing examination of buying intention and real buying decision reveals that basically a discrepancy of attitude and behaviour does not exist. In contrast, there is a scope for price policy, which can be used to develop relevant market segments. Moreover, the great extent of consistency between buying intention and buying decision indicates a strong explanatory power of professional surveys.

Full textThe intention of this work was an intensive study of the influence of feedstock properties and process variables on biomass pyrolysis. Due to a lack in consistent data sets, including various feedstock parameters as well as product yields, compositions, and further properties, a laboratory fixed bed reactor was developed to overcome this problem. The pyrolysis reactor was used for experiments with 26 biogenous feedstock under variable process conditions. The reactor is suitable to assure nearly closed mass balances and a complete product recovery. Furthermore, it allows the minimization of secondary reactions. The used feedstock, which include cellulose, xylan, and lignin amongst others, represent a broad range of possible compositions and were intensively characterized by determination of fuel and physical properties as well as biopolymer composition. The varied process parameters are: temperature between 200 and 700 °C, heating rate in the range of 5 to 100 K/min, solid residence time from 0 to 30 min, and particle size up to 5 mm. Closed mass and element balances were done for every set of parameters. As expected, amongst process variables the temperature was identified as the main factor influencing biomass pyrolysis. The temperature depending products yields could be fitted well by the double boltzmann approach due to the two-stage pyrolytic decomposition of biomass. Correlation of feedstock properties with different target parameters, including yields, product composition, heating values, remaining energy content in char, and char properties, was done by Spearman´s rank correlation and Pearson´s correlation for different temperatures. Biopolymer composition as well as alkaline content and total content of potential catalytic elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe) were identified as main factors influencing biomass pyrolysis product yields and compositions. Further correlations arise with fuel properties like volatile matter and ash content besides O/C atomic ratio. The obtained correlations can be mainly related to pyrolysis mechanisms. The received relationships were quantified by means of multiple regression models. Model evaluation was done by coefficient of determination, information criteria and mean squared errors. 42 regression models, based on different biopolymer contents and the total content of catalytic elements, were provided for the mathematical description of product yields for different process temperatures. Another 56 equations are suitable for the calculation of product properties like tar/oil and char composition, tar/oil heating value, and remaining energy content in the char at different temperatures. The predictability of the regression models was proved using another data set for apple pomace. The yields of char, gas, and condensate as well as the aforementioned product properties can be predicted very well, although, the predictability varies with the applied equation. Validation of the models by literature data was only possible for the char yield, because of the mentioned lack in suitable and complete data sets. Application of regression model to fixed bed char yields for different biomass and biogenous residues from literature resulted in a good predictability. Mathematical description of pyrolysis product yields and properties by means of regression models based on feedstock parameters is a promising approach to predict maximum yields at defined conditions and, therefore, to make an estimation of suitability of the biomass to different applications. Up to now such models do not exist. In general, the development of simple equations based on a few standardized parameters which are easy to determine is worthwhile. Hence, the results showed that the overall trend between different biomass feeds was often not predicted correctly using one-parameter models. This is due to the complex relationships between pyrolysis behavior and feedstock properties. Consequently, at least two parameter models, where the variables show the opposite trends, were most appropriate

Full textThe adoption of information systems (IS) which extend beyond organisational boundaries, so-called interorganisational information systems (IOS), is influenced by factors on the organisational rather than the individual end-user-oriented level. The question of adoption or non-adoption is usually decided not only by system or technology features, but also by organisational characteristics and interorganisational or environmental factors. As the benefits derived from IOS use increase as more partners participate, network effects also need to be considered. Within this paper, we develop a comprehensive framework of factors potentially influencing the adoption of IOS in supply chains and on this basis derive a causal model
