Abstract:
The monastery of Einsiedeln is not only the biggest private forest owner in the region but in the whole of Switzerland. Many of the forests it holds today already belonged to the monastery in the Middle Ages. In keeping with the notion of property rights at the time the monastery did not, however, hold all rights of usufruct. The monastery's forests were exploited by the «Waldleute» (the inhabitants of Einsiedeln), sometimes as common pasture, but sometimes individually. In the 16th and 17th centuries and against the will of Canton Schwyz (under whose protectorate it lay) the monastery redeemed the rights of usufruct to ensure its own supply of wood and in order to participate in wood trading with the town of Zurich. Various examples show that the monastery often only redeemed the rights of wood yield while the grazing rights stayed with the seller – clearly an arrangement that was in the economic interests of both parties. With the advent of the modern property rights and the introduction of a «regulated forest management» such an arrangement came to be seen as a big problem. This is why, in the 19th century, the monastery redeemed all rights of usufruct of its forests.

Abstract The paper presents mystical rhyme verses preserved on page 153a–b of the manuscript Einsiedeln, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. 278 from the 14th century. The verses, which have never been discussed before, follow the preceding mystical poem ›Ein meister der seit vns das wesen blos‹ in terms of content. However, they are separated from the poem by two aphorisms in prose attributed to a master. In the following paper the newly found rhyme verses are edited and interpreted in the context of the poem ›Ein meister der seit vns das wesen blos‹ and the two aphorisms of the master.

ABSTRACTTwo ancient pastoral poems were published by Hermann Hagen in 1869 from a manuscript at Einsiedeln and were soon dated to the reign of Nero. In this study, I show that these poems are related to theBucolicon Olybriilisted in a library catalogue of Murbach from around 850, and demonstrate on internal and external grounds that the poems were likely composed around the end of the fourth century by Anicius Hermogenianus Olybrius, the consul of 395. This attribution enhances our understanding of the literary culture of the age of Claudian and contributes to the on-going debate on the extent and import of Neronian literature.

Bernd Kulawik is a trained marine engineer who studied physics, musicology and philosophy at the Technical Universities of Dresden and Berlin. MA thesis in 1996 about Monteverdi’s «Seconda Pratica». PhD in 2002 with a dissertation about drawings in the Berlin «Codex Destailleur D» for Antonio da Sangallo the Younger’s last project for St. Peter’s in Rome. Since 1988 he worked in research libraries and institutes in Berlin, Rome, Berne, Einsiedeln and Zurich, mostly as developer for database projects. Since 2013 he could take up his research about the study of ancient architecture in Renaissance Rome which led to the rediscovery of the forgotten «Accademia de lo Studio de l’Architettura». This academy almost completely realised Claudio Tolomei’s ambitious program from 1542 formerly believed to be unrealisable. Other research interests are the history of philosophy, Renaissance music and the epistemic and technical preconditions as well as long-time perspectives of the Digital Humanities.

Abstract:
ObjectivesThe socioeconomic disparity in childhood and early adult obesity prevalence has been well characterised. Takeaway outlets may cluster in lower socioeconomic areas and their proximity to schools is of concern. This study aimed to map takeaway food outlets, characterise takeaway types and their proximity to educational institutions within a low socioeconomic ward in Manchester.DesignThe Rusholme ward and a 2 km Euclidean buffer were included as the study area. Local authority Environmental Health data were used to map the takeaway outlets, using QGIS V.2.18.0 (OPENGIS.ch LLC, Einsiedeln, Switzerland). The types of takeaway outlets and major roads were included. Number of outlets within a 400 m Euclidean walking buffer of educational institutions were mapped.SettingRusholme, Manchester, UK.ResultsWithin the study area, 202 takeaway food outlets were identified and mapped as cluster points. Of these, 62.3% are located on major (A and B) roads, while the remaining outlets were located on minor roads. The majority (57.4%) of takeaway outlets sold similar items (fried chicken, burgers, pizzas, kebabs), with the remainder offering more diverse menus. Of the 53 schools, colleges and universities within the study area, 28 (52.8%) had 1–5 takeaway food outlets within 400 m, 9 (17.0%) had 6–10 outlets; 4 (7.5%) more than 11 outlets with 12 (22.6%) having zero outlets within 400 m.ConclusionWithin this low socioeconomic area, there was a high concentration of takeaway food outlets, predominantly along major roads and in easy walking distance of educational establishments with the majority offering similar foods. In addition, a high proportion of these outlets were in easy walking distance of educational establishments. Public health policy needs to consider the implications of current takeaway food outlets and not just the proliferation of these outlets with current planning laws.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the Baroque period, artists worked in a style—encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church and the Council of Trent—that revealed the divine in natural forms and made religious experiences more accessible. Cosmas Damian Asam, painter and architect, and his brother Egid (Aegid) Quirin Asam, sculptor and stuccatore, were the principal exponents of eighteenth-century, southern-German religious decoration and architecture in the grand manner, the Gesamtkunstwerk. Cosmas Damian's visionary and ecstatic art utilized light, both physical and illusionistic, together with images of meteorological and astronomical phenomena, such as solar and lunar eclipses. This paper focuses on his representations of eclipses and demonstrates how Asam was galvanized by their visual, as well as metaphorical, power and that he studied a number of them. He subsequently applied his observations in a series of paintings for the Benedictine order that become increasingly astronomically accurate and spiritually profound. From the evidence presented, especially in three depictions of St. Benedict's vision, the artist harnessed his observations to visualize the literary description of the miraculous event in the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great, traditionally a difficult scene to illustrate, even for Albrecht Dürer. Asam painted the trio at Einsiedeln, Switzerland (1724–27); Kladruby, the Czech Republic (1725–27), where he captured the solar corona and the "diamond-ring effect"; and Weltenburg, Germany (1735), where he also depicted the diamond-ring effect at a total solar eclipse. We conclude that his visualizations were informed by his personal observations of the solar eclipses on 12 May 1706, 22 May 1724, and 13 May 1733. Asam may have also known the eclipse maps of Edmond Halley and William Whiston that were issued in advance. Astronomers did not start studying eclipses scientifically until the nineteenth century, making Asam's depictions all the more fascinating. So powerful was the image that Asam invented to visualize St. Benedict's vision that it found reflection in the subsequent Bavarian Benedictine visual tradition. Total solar eclipses are among the most spectacular sights in Nature. Therefore, in an age obsessed with revealing the divine through natural idioms and making religious experiences direct—not to mention that light had long functioned as a symbol of divinity in the Christian tradition—it seems fitting that solar eclipses would be interpreted as a metaphor of a divine presence or a miracle.

Abstract:

Recently, Einsiedler and the authors provided a bound in terms of escape of mass for the amount by which upper-semicontinuity for metric entropy fails for diagonal flows on homogeneous spaces $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\setminus G$, where $G$ is any connected semisimple Lie group of real rank one with finite center, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is any non-uniform lattice in $G$. We show that this bound is sharp, and apply the methods used to establish bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points that diverge on average.

Abstract:
It was recently shown by Aka, Einsiedler and Shapira that if $d>2$ , the set of primitive vectors on large spheres when projected to the $(d-1)$ -dimensional sphere coupled with the shape of the lattice in their orthogonal complement equidistribute in the product space of the sphere with the space of shapes of $(d-1)$ -dimensional lattices. Specifically, for $d=3,4,5$ some congruence conditions are assumed. By using recent advances in the theory of unipotent flows, we effectivize the dynamical proof to remove those conditions for $d=4,5$ . It also follows that equidistribution takes place with a polynomial error term with respect to the length of the primitive points.

Abstract:
The last comprehensive study of Canadian science journalists and science reporting was done over 20 years ago (Dubas and Martel 1973). A more recent content analysis of seven major Canadian dailies found most science stories are “hard” news in style and originate from wire sources (Einsiedel 1992). This 1994 survey of 105 of Canada's daily English-language newspapers and their commitment to science journalism revealed a general weakening and dilution of reporter allocation. Over 50 percent of Canadian dailies did not allocate a science reporter. Only 18 full-time science reporters were identified. A follow-up of 45 journalists covering science at least half-time revealed most covered science policy. The vast majority had no science training. Time problems and competing demands hindered professional development. Confirming suggestions of previous literature, this study also indicates the Canadian daily newspaper structure is not supportive of the style of reportage required for quality science writing, nor of the development of such writers.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: E. T. A. Hoffmann; princípio serapiôntico; epistemologia literária.

Abstract:
AbstractBehaviour and morphology of the hermit crab, Pagurus imafukui, which occupies tusk shells in nature, were investigated. A positive correlation was found between the shield length of the crab and the width of the tusk shell. The uropods were nearly symmetrical, with an average asymmetry index of 0.04, such in contrast with a value of 0.28 for Pagurus filholi, that naturally occupies dextral shells. P. imafukui showed a weak preference for tusk shells over dextral shells. The crabs walked in a parallel pattern, while they adopted a cross pattern when forced to enter dextral shells or were in a shell-less condition. On the contrary, P. filholi individuals walked in a cross pattern when in a tusk shell as well as in a dextral shell. Behaviours of shell entering, copulation, and zoeal release as seen in P. imafukui, are similar to the conditions observed in other species. Nearly symmetrical uropods, preference for non-spiral shells, and the walking style comprising a parallel pattern, are thought to be specific to this hermit crab that lives in non-spiral dwellings.
