Abstract:
Philip Glass is so prolific a composer that it is tempting to wonder whether he has become entrapped by his trademark restlessly repeating patterns. At the age of 77, there is no diminution of his prodigious energy; The Trial brings his tally of operas to some 30 since he first shot to fame – or notoriety – with Einstein on the Beach in 1976. Glass is, in effect, an iconoclast-turned-icon, and he is now by far the most performed contemporary composer of opera on the planet.

In this study, a physics-based morphology model is developed and to test the feasibility of the morphology model proposed in this study as the platform for the optimal design of the beach nourishment project, the beach restoration process by the infra-gravity waves underlying the swells in a mild sea is numerically simulated. As a hydrodynamic module, the IHFOAM wave toolbox having its roots in the OpenFoam is used. Speaking of the morphology model, a transport equation for suspended load and the Exner type equation constitute the morphology model. In doing so, the probability theory first int

Abstract The use of ultraviolet light (UV) from low pressure mercury lamps for destroying iron cyanide in synthetic and actual gold mill effluents was evaluated in this study. For the light intensities used in this study, UV irradiation was not able to efficiently destroy cyanide. However, it converted iron cyanide to a weak acid dissociable form which was destroyed by chlorine. Data from several bench-scale tests and one pilot scale test were used to estimate quantum efficiencies (moles iron cyanide destroyed/einstein). These efficiencies ranged from 0.2% to 1%; approximately 30% to 90% lower

A new concept of beach memory is investigated in this research. Using a Beach Evolution Model developed for beach rotation, we define a function of beach memory able to describe the weight of the preceding wave conditions and their contribution in the current beach response. The time beach memory time is also defined as the period of time required for the beach memory function to be dissipated in the previous time to negligible values. The Beach Memory Function and the Beach Memory Time can be used to determine the influence of the preceding energy in the current coastal changes. Both new conc

Abstract:
Abstract On Zeno Beach there are infinitely many grains of sand, each half the size of the last. Supposing Aristotle denied the possibility of Zeno Beach, did he have a good argument for the denial? Three arguments, each of ancient origin, are examined: (1) the beach would be infinitely large; (2) the beach would be impossible to walk across; (3) the beach would contain a part equal to the whole, whereas parts must be lesser. It is attempted to show that none of these arguments was Aristotle’s. Indeed, perhaps Aristotle’s finitism applied to magnitude only, not plurality.
