Abstract:
Loren Eiseley (1907-1977) a été connu tour à tour comme archéologue, anthropologue, éducateur, philosophe, poète ou bien encore auteur d’études en sciences naturelles. Il remet en cause les thèses sur la science, la nature et l’homme qui avaient cours à son époque. Il unit les sciences et les humanités au travers de sa prose et de ses poèmes, anticipant le concept actuel d’humanités environnmentales. En tant qu’archéologue, il utilise la science, l’imagination et l’observation tels des outils dans le but de reconstruire le passé. Il a mis au point de nouveaux angles de vue permettant d’appréhender l’univers et la place de l’homo sapiens en son sein. Il pense que l’homme moderne s’est dénaturé en devenant le destructeur de la planète et, de ce fait, anticipe le point de vue éco-centrique qui s’est imposé dans la période qui a fait suite à la révolution industrielle, période de plus en plus désignée comme l’anthropocène. Les écrits de Eiseley pressent l’humanité de renouer avec notre passé animal de façon à respecter l’ordre naturel dont nous sommes issus. Son œuvre force le lecteur à participer à son projet de rénovation de notre univers mental et culturel
Loren Eiseley (1907-1977) has been variously described as archaeologist, anthropologist, educator, philosopher, poet, and natural science writer. He challenges the views of science, nature, and man that were current at the time he wrote. He brings science and the humanities together by expressing his ecological, philosophical and metaphysical ideas in both prose and poems, anticipating the concept of environmental humanities nowadays. He is an archeologist who uses the tools of science, imagination and observation to reconstruct the past. Eiseley finds new angles from which to view the universe and homo sapiens’ place within it. He argues that modern man has fallen out of nature and become a planet destroyer. He anticipates the eco-centric position that is becoming necessary in the era following the Industrial Revolution that is increasingly being recognized as the Anthropocene. Eiseley’s writings urge that humanity reconnect with our animal past in order to respect the natural world from which we came. In bridging the nature and culture divide, his work forces readers to participate in the project of re-examining our own mental and cultural world

Abstract:
Determining the quality of natural language applications is one of the most important aspects of technology development. There has, however, been very little work done on establishing how well the methods and measures represent the quality of the technology and how reliable the evaluation results presented in most research are. This study presents a new stepwise evaluation reliability methodology that provides a step-by-step framework for creating predictive models of evaluation metric reliability that take into account inherent evaluation variables. These models can then be used to predict how reliable a particular evaluation will be prior to doing an evaluation, based on the variables that are present in the evaluation data. This allows evaluators to predict the reliability of the evaluation prior to doing the evaluation and adjusting the evaluation data to ensure reliable results. Furthermore, this permits researchers to compare results when the same evaluation data is not available. The new methodology is firstly applied to a well-defined technology, namely spelling checkers, with a detailed discussion of the evaluation techniques and statistical procedures required to accurately model an evaluation. The spelling checker evaluations are investigated in more detail to show how individual variables affect the evaluation results. Finally, a predictive regression model for each of the spelling checker evaluations is created and validated to verify the accuracy of its predictive capability. After performing the in-depth analysis and application of the stepwise evaluation reliability methodology on spelling checkers, the methodology is applied to two more technologies, namely part of speech tagging and named entity recognition. These validation procedures are applied across multiple languages, specifically Dutch, English, Spanish and Iberian Portuguese. Performing these additional evaluations shows that the methodology is applicable to a broader set of technologies across multiple languages.

Este trabalho apresenta a tradução integral dos Manuscritos da Aritmética Elementar de Charles Sanders Peirce e algumas notas de pesquisa criadas com a intenção de subsidiar uma Hermenêutica dos Manuscritos traduzidos. Estes Manuscritos foram produzidos no século XIX e não foram publicados e nem mesmo concluídos pelo autor, só chegando até nós devido ao trabalho de Carolyn Eisele, pesquisadora quem os editou e publicou no ano de 1976. A elaboração das notas foi inspirada no referencial metodológico da Hermenêutica de Profundidade de John B. Thompson. Nestas notas de pesquisa tematizamos a metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa, da historiografia e do campo de pesquisa da História da Educação Matemática; a Hermenêutica de Profundidade; os Paratextos Editoriais de Gérard Genette; trabalhos anteriores ao nosso que se inspiraram nos referenciais teórico-metodológicos da Hermenêutica de Profundidade e/ou dos Paratextos Editoriais para criação de suas metodologias de pesquisa; o processo de tradução dos Manuscritos; a biografia de Charles Sanders Peirce; a biografia da pesquisadora Carolyn Eisele; acontecimentos da História dos Estados Unidos e da Educação Estadunidense no período em que Peirce viveu; acontecimentos que envolveram a produção, arquivo e divulgação dos Manuscritos de Peirce; e sobre nossa experiência com a pesquisa.
In this work we present the complete translation of the Primary Arithmetic’s Manuscripts of Charles Sanders Peirce and some research notes created with the intention of subsidizing a Hermeneutics of the translated Manuscripts. These Manuscripts were produced in the nineteenth century and were neither published nor concluded by the author, coming to us only due to the work of Carolyn Eisele, a researcher whom organized and published them in the year of 1976. The preparation of the notes was inspired by the methodological referential of the Hermeneutics of Depth of John B. Thompson. In these research notes we discuss the qualitative research methodology, the historiography and the History of Mathematics Education research field; the Hermeneutics of Depth; the Paratexts by Gérard Genette; previous works that were inspired by the theoretical-methodological references of Hermeneutics of Depth and/or of Paratexts to create their research methodologies; the Manuscripts translation process; the Charles Sanders Peirce’s biography; the Carolyn Eisele’s biography; events of the United States History and of the United States Education in the period when Peirce lived; events that involved the production, archiving and dissemination of the Peirce’s Manuscripts; and our experience with the research.
