Abstract:
Nature provides an oracle, often when and where we do not seek one. Childhood encounters with animals, as with people, can be formative. Loren Eiseley’s encounters may have been set him on the path of the vagrant. Such seekers may be drawn to places and things others shun (like caves, or spiders). This act of exploring beneath the surface of things is rarely completed or satisfying. Rather, like an oracle that speaks in half-audible whispers, much is left for the seeking mind to fill in. The scientist may feel their quest is more rational in execution than the mythic wanderer, but the world of the mind can allow for shape-shifting realities wherein both quests become one. This fearless willingness to listen to the oracle, and go wherever it leads, is both exemplary of good science and the human quest. I consider here what could have been the formative experiences that compelled Loren Eiseley, as a watcher of things, to look beneath familiar surfaces. (WRB)

Abstract:
AbstractAs a theologian seeking to evaluate the meaning of "nature" or the "natural"—especially as contained in the problematic term "natural evils"—I will turn predominantly to an anthropologist-poet (Loren Eiseley), a professor of evolutionary biology (Jared Diamond), and a geomorphologist (David Montgomery). Ultimately, I will assess the value of creation and the question of responsibility in light of the staggering and senseless loss of so much life. I contend that theists will find unexpected allies in historical and anthropological works that examine how human action (and inaction) causes or exacerbates much of the destruction "natural" disasters unleash. Questions to investigate include: (1) How responsible are humans for the suffering inflicted by "natural" disasters? (2) If human beings are not solely culpable for such affliction, how should this impact a theist's faith position and the value of creation? (3) How can the findings and analysis of the scientists consulted in this article support a Levinasian priority of the ethical and liberation theologians' option for the poor? (4) How can a pluralized, ambiguous interpretation of the natural spur a deeper sense of eco-responsibility? (5) Which theological approach is best able to respond to the reality of our depleted and ravaged biosphere?

A wide range of unrelated topics are addressed in five articles and three notes published in this issue. The first article, contributed by Sieg Eiselen of UNISA, deals comparatively with the difficulties of an appropriate interpretation of the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) regarding standard terms in international contracts of sale. Eiselen subscribes to an approach according to which a clear incorporation clause in the contract is considered to be sufficient for the effective incorporation of standard terms.

Abstract:
In August of 1983 Federal Judge G. Thomas Eisele of the Eastern District of Arkansas held that a person is entitled to a new trial if he/she is tried for a capital crime and convicted in a two-stage trial and those persons who could never vote for the death penalty are automatically excluded for participation in the guilt-innocence phase of the trial.1 In a long opinion, analyzing the various aspects of the “death-qualified jury” issue, Judge Eisele relied very heavily on social science data from psychologists to conclude that barring those opposed to the death penalty in any form from the guilt-innocence phase of a trial would have the effect of eliminating a “distinctive group” in the community and thus violate the right of the defendant to be tried by a jury drawn from a cross-section of the community (See Duren v. Missouri (1979).

AbstractWe describe a new frog species of the Mantidactylus boulengeri group (Amphibia: Anura: Mantellidae) in the subgenus Gephyromantis from south-eastern Madagascar. It is morphologically similar to M. eiselti and M. thelenae but differs in its advertisement calls with a distinctly shorter note duration, and in its bilobate (not single) subgular vocal sac. Like M. eiselti and M. thelenae the new species Mantidactylus enki is predominantly diurnal and calling males do not aggregate close to water bodies, indicating direct development as it has been demonstrated previously in M. eiselti. The advertisement calls of all three species are described in detail. A comparison with a further pair of cryptic species with bilobate vs. single subgular vocal sac (Mantidactylus tschenki — M. cornutus) did not reveal any consistent pattern of call variation correlated with vocal sac structure. Therefore, sexual selection may also be considered to explain differences in the colour and external structure of vocal sacs among closely related species.

Abstract:
We describe a new species of small diurnal frog of the genus Gephyromantis from Mahasoa, a fragment of mid-altituderainforest in the northern central east of Madagascar, located to the north east of Lake Alaotra. Analysis of DNA sequencesof the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome b genes and of the nuclear Rag 1 gene indicate that Gephyromantis mafysp. nov. is closely related to G. eiselti and G. thelenae, that it is genetically distinct and when compared with the geneticdiversity of all species in the genus shows genetic differences similar to other pairs of species. These three species aremorphologically almost indistinguishable but the new species differs by a relevant and consistent genetic divergence inall markers studied, and by its advertisement calls composed of note series. The call is intermediate between G. eiselti andG. thelenae, showing shorter note duration and higher repetition rate than in G. thelenae and slightly longer note durationbut lower repetition rate than in G. eiselti. The new species is known only from Mahasoa forest but due to its secretivehabits and cryptic morphology, we assume that it is more widespread in the mid-altitude rainforests east and north of Lake Alaotra that so far have been very poorly surveyed. We propose a Red List status of Data Deficient for the new species.

AbstractThe subject of this essay is Fritz Eisel’s mosaic Der Mensch bezwingt den Kosmos (Humanity Conquers the Cosmos), a frieze that has decorated the Potsdam data-processing center since its completion in 1972. Composed of 18 panels measuring ca. 3 × 3 m, this frieze is unusually large, yet in its ideological appropriation of science and technology it is a paradigmatic example of public art in the German Democratic Republic. Framed by textual references to Einstein and Marx, Eisel’s mosaic glorifies the progress of industry, agriculture, and administration, but first and foremost of aviation and space flight. This essay examines the mosaic in the context of the “scientific-technical revolution” officially proclaimed in 1964, and with a view to its site, which is fraught with historical implications.

Abstract:
I. THE BIOLOGY-CULTURE CONNECTION IN THE HISTORYOF ANTHROPOLOGICAL THOUGHTThe story of modem anthropology is a story of the Euro-American attemptto discover the other than Euro-American human being. Within thatstory is the story of the intellectual self-discovery of the Euro-American;within that is the story of the discovery of racism; within that is the storyof political and ideological pressures on the processes of such discoveries;within that the amazing and wonderful story of the scientific discovery ofthe worldly nature of the human being - conceptualized generally: acrossall space and time, all colors and languages; and within that story is a storyof the social and natural sciences: of their methods, results, potentialities, and pitfalls. If there is a central theme that runs through all these stories within thestory, it is the story of the impact of Darwinian and post-Darwinian biologyon the social and human sciences. Modem anthropology is not much morethan an evolutionist form of humanism. Evolutionism is to be found in mosttypes of contemporary anthropological studies, as a central position or animplicit assumption. It is clearly axiomatic to thought, analysis, and interpretationin the discipline. As such it is a fundamental issue in the considerationof modem anthropology for inclusion in, and recasting for, Islamic educationalpurposes. The aim of this presentation is to consider briefly how theimpact of Darwin, and of biology after Darwin, on recent anthropologicalthought may be measured as a step toward developing an Islamic methodologyfor anthropological research and teaching.Since its publication in 1859 by Charles Darwin (and Alfred Russell),evolutionary theory has been refined and developed by virturally all life sciencedisciplines and a few other disciplines such as anthropology. Anthropdogyis rooted partly in the life sciences and partly in the social sciences. Humanevolutionary theory developed by anthropologists has gained wide acceptancein all sectors of the Western scientific establishment. Adherence to, and propagationof, an evolutionist world-view has become a symbol of the liberalistmission of Western science in the face of periodic opposition to it comingfrom conservative, evangelist, Christian fundamentalists, and politicians whorepresent them. A few of the anti-evolutionists are also scientists (Williams,1983). They have given leadership to the most recent form of antievolutionism, called scientific creationism. Within the scientific and educationalcommunity their view is at present a minority view; the dominant viewbeing the pro-evolutionary one. Among the Judeo-Christian population atlarge, in the United States, surveys indicate that about half of the people givecredence to the evolutionary view. The others either do not or do not care.An effect of post-Darwinian natural science on social science was to bringhuman evolution into focus as incorporating psychological, social, and culturalaspects in addition to the biological (see e.g. in Eiseley, 1958; Freeman, 1974;Harris, 1968; Opler, 1964; Reed, 1961; Stocking, 1968). The historical relationshipof bio-evolutionary theory to the social sciences in general andspecifically to anthropology, is complex. Nowadays it is one of the dependenceof the latter on the former. It has been argued, however, that in its formativeyears, Darwinian evolutionary theory was in fact an application of socialscience concepts to biology. Darwin himself acknowledged that the Malthusianstatement of the principle that human population, when unchecked, increasesin geometrical ratio while subsistence increases only in arithmeticalratio, influenced his idea of natural selection. The subsequent acceptance ofMendelian genetics, on which the modem form of evolutionism rests, quicklytransformed even the fundamental social science principles of the study ofhuman races and variation. The continuing success of the biological sciences ...

Abstract:
Fescue toxicosis and ergot alkaloids are estimated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to cost the U.S. ranchers $860 million per year. The endophyte fungi Neotyphodium coenophialum is present in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). This fungus produces toxic alkaloids (principally ergovaline) that cause deleterious effects in cattle and other livestock when infected grasses are eaten. Previous studies in sheep and cattle have yielded no culturable microbes able to detoxify the ergot molecules, leading to the search for novel sources of anaerobic organisms capable of degrading ergot alkaloids. Anaerobic incubation of earthworm (Eisenea fetida) homogenate with pure ergovaline has exhibited a 60% decrease in ergovaline concentration. Digestive tracks were dissected from worms obtained from an endophyte-fed digester. Cloning and partial sequencing of bacterial 16S rDNA obtained from these samples revealed a diverse microbiota, including bacteria sequences which classified into the phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Planktomycetes. Future work is focused on refining our understanding of the contribution towards possible ergot alkaloids detoxification made by the bacteria of the worm-gut microbiota. Keywords: ergovaline, microbial degradation, endophyte, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Eisenea fetida

I am honoured and pleased to address you this evening on the life and work of an extraordinary American thinker, Charles Sanders Peirce. Although Peirce is perhaps most often remembered as the father of the philosophical movement known as pragmatism, I would like to impress upon you that he was also, and perhaps, especially, a logician, a working scientist and a mathematician. During his life time Peirce most often referred to himself, and was referred to by his colleagues, as a logician. Furthermore, Peirce spent thirty years actively engaged in scientific research for the US Coast Survey. The National Archives in Washington, DC, holds some five thousand pages of Peirce's reports on this work. Finally, the four volumes of Peirce's mathematical papers edited by Professor Carolyn Eisele eloquently testify to his contributions to that field as well.

Abstract:
Abstract In representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, (semi)bricks are a generalization of (semi)simple modules, and they have long been studied. The aim of this paper is to study semibricks from the point of view of $\tau $-tilting theory. We construct canonical bijections between the set of support $\tau $-tilting modules, the set of semibricks satisfying a certain finiteness condition, and the set of 2-term simple-minded collections. In particular, we unify Koenig–Yang bijections and Ingalls–Thomas bijections generalized by Marks–Št’ovíček, which involve several important notions in the derived categories and the module categories. We also investigate connections between our results and two kinds of reduction theorems of $\tau $-rigid modules by Jasso and Eisele–Janssens–Raedschelders. Moreover, we study semibricks over Nakayama algebras and tilted algebras in detail as examples.
