The contracting of public works is, by definition, complex, and its success depends on many varied and interconnected parts. Choosing the most appropriate type of contract in relation to the contractor's compensation method is one of the most essential decisions. Public procurement should be for service providers who meet certain qualification criteria. The verification of the fulfillment of these criteria must be done individually for each process, being associated with the need to present the corresponding documents. The fate of all projects is closely related to the drafted contract. In each project, it is necessary to have a suitable contract in force; otherwise, it may have negative consequences for all parties involved. Failures can cause delayed schedule, excess costs, inadequate quality and safety, and several others. What has been seen is that, in most cases, contracting by public clients is based only on the lowest price, thus making it difficult to comply with the rules and meet the challenges. In contracts, penalties are for breach of deadlines and poor results in quality control. Contract managers must be prepared and well-defined to respond to short deadlines, tight budgets and the required quality. Therefore, the present work seeks to propose the objectives model, business rules model, business process model and actors and resources using Enterprise Knowledge Development (EKD) - organizational modeling methodology that facilitates the acquisition of knowledge of the structure organizational and strategic planning and assists in the identification of organizational requirements; also propose a flow map of the main responsibilities of the actors. The objective of this work is to analyze, with the use of the methodology, potential improvements in the modeling of civil construction contract management in the public administration, investigating the contracting of projects and public building works on UFC campuses. The models were developed and validated with COP professionals involved in the bidding processes and generating them was possible to propose improvement opportunities for the process of project design, budgeting, hiring, monitoring and inspection of the execution of the work.
A contratação de obras públicas é, por definição, complexa, e o seu sucesso depende de muitas partes variadas e interligadas. A escolha do tipo mais apropriado de contrato em relação ao método de compensação do contratante é uma das decisões mais essenciais. A contratação pública deve ser para prestadores de serviços que atendam a determinados critérios de qualificação. A verificação do cumprimento desses critérios deve ser feita individualmente para cada processo, estando associada com a necessidade de apresentar os documentos correspondentes. O destino de todos os projetos está intimamente relacionado com o contrato elaborado. Em cada projeto, é necessário ter um contrato adequado em vigor; caso contrário, pode ter consequências negativas para todas as partes envolvidas. Falhas podem provocar cronograma atrasado, excesso de custos, qualidade e segurança inadequados e diversos outros. O que se tem visto é que, na maioria dos casos, as contratações realizadas por clientes públicos baseiam-se apenas no preço mais baixo, dificultando, assim, o cumprimento das regras e vencimento dos desafios. Nos contratos, as penalidades são previstas para violação de prazos e maus resultados no controle de qualidade. Os gestores dos contratos devem estar preparados e com processos bem definidos para responderem a prazos curtos, orçamentos apertados e à qualidade exigida. Diante disso o presente trabalho busca propor o modelo de objetivos, modelo de regras do negócio, modelo de processos do negócio e o de atores e recursos usando o Enterprise Knowledge Development (EKD) - metodologia de modelagem organizacional que facilita a aquisição do conhecimento da estrutura organizacional e estratégica e auxilia na identificação dos requisitos organizacionais; propor também um mapa do fluxo das principais responsabilidades dos atores. O trabalho tem como meta analisar, com o uso da metodologia, potenciais melhorias na modelagem do gerenciamento de contrato da construção civil na administração pública investigando a contratação de projetos e obras públicas de edificação nos campi da UFC. Os modelos foram desenvolvidos e validados com profissionais da COP envolvidos nos processos de licitação e ao gera-los foi possível propor oportunidades de melhoras para o processo de elaboração de projetos, orçamentos, contratação, acompanhamento e fiscalização da execução da obra.

Abstract:
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division continues to advance the safety of the state roadway network through network screening and decision making tools. In an effort to aid UDOT in meeting this goal, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for highway safety, specifically the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM) and the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM). Additional tools and methodologies, such as the "Hot Spot Identification and Analysis," have been created to summarize the roadway characteristics, crash data, and possible countermeasures of roadway segments with safety problems.This research focuses on the creation of a three part "Roadway Safety Analysis" methodology, which applies and automates the cumulative work of recently completed highway safety research conducted for UDOT. The first part is to prepare the roadway data and crash data for the statistical analysis. The second part is to perform the network screening statistical analysis; rank the segments by state, UDOT Region, and county; and select segments of interest. The third part is to compile and publish the Roadway Safety Analysis reports for the selected segments of interest. These parts are accomplished using the automation tools and graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which are documented in three respective volumes of user manuals. The automation tools and GUIs were developed with checks and processes to allow the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology to be completed with new, updated roadway and crash datasets.The Roadway Safety Analysis methodology allows future iterations of the UCPM and UCSM analysis and compilation of the Roadway Safety Analysis reports to be conducted in a user friendly environment. A series of critical data columns were identified to communicate the need for data consistency for future iterations of this safety research. An example of the entire process of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology is given to illustrate how the three parts tie together. The overall process has automated data processing tasks, which saves time and resources for the analyst to investigate possible safety measures for segments of interest. Recommendations for future highway safety research are given, including continued development of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology, an analysis of intersections and horizontal curves, the implementation of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology to other states, and the advancement of safety countermeasures and geospatial tools for highway safety research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the valuation process of community college library end-users as they decide which information resources to use when conducting research. This study was designed as an exploratory study using Q methodology and focused on five specific information resources that community college library end-users routinely use in their research process: the Internet, the reference librarian, books, newspapers, and subscription databases. Little is known about the valuation hierarchy that end-users overlay on these resources when deciding which ones to use to address a specific research need. Sixty-four community college library end-users from four main campuses of a large community college sorted 40 statements describing specific value statements pertaining to the information resources under study. The statements were sorted along a continuum ranging from least like me (-4) to most like me (+4) with 0 representing an opinion of neutrality. Following these procedures, five factors emerged that represented different perspectives on value relating to the five information resources under study. Interpretation of these factors yielded distinct patterns of opinion relating to the perceived value of each information resource. These factors were named: (a) Browsers, (b) Proficient, (c) Vacillators, (d) Bibliophiles, and (e) Traditionalists. The results of the study suggest that community college library end-users value, to varying degrees, all five of the information resources selected for this study. The results also suggest that while the Internet has become a dominant information resource in the community college library end-user's research process, other more traditional information resources such as the reference librarian, books, and, to a lesser extent, newspapers still hold value in the research process. The perspectives described and the interpretation provided in this study can greatly assist community college library end-users in the valuation of available community college library information resources.

To aid UDOT in meeting their goal the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for safety. The most recent of these tools has been the development of a hierarchical Bayesian Poisson Mixture Model (PMM) statistical model of traffic crashes and safety on UDOT roadways statewide and the integration of the results of this model in a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. This research focuses on the enhancement of the framework for highway safety mitigation in Utah with its six primary steps: 1) network screening, 2) diagnosis, 3) countermeasure selection, 4) economic appraisal, 5) project prioritization, and 6) effectiveness evaluation. The framework was enhanced by developing a methodology for accomplishing the steps of network screening, diagnosis, and countermeasure selection. This methodology is titled, "Hot Spot Identification and Analysis." The hot spot identification and analysis methodology consists of the following seven steps: 1) identify problematic segments with safety concern, 2) identify problem spots within the segments, 3) micro analysis of problematic segments and spots, 4) defining the segment, 5) defining the problem, 6) evaluation of possible countermeasures, and 7) selection and recommendation of feasible countermeasures. The methodology is to help in the identification of hot spots with safety concerns so that they can be analyzed and countermeasures can be identified to mitigate the safety issues. Examples of how the methodology is to function are given with specific examples from Utah's state roadway network.

Winschel, Ph.D. A Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Major Director: Dr. Vladimir A. Sidorov ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a new receptor (cyclen 1) capable of strong selective binding of pyrene-based anionic dyes under near-physiological conditions. This receptor comprises four naphthylthiourea groups tethered to a cyclen core via an ester linkage. The most important finding was the ability of cyclen 1 to bind efficiently to a pH-sensitive pyranine dye, a dye that is commonly used in various biomembrane assays. The high affinity of cyclen 1 to pyranine, its impermeability to the lipid bilayer membrane, fast kinetics of binding, and ability to quench pyranine’s fluorescence were used as a basis for a new membrane leakage assay. This membrane leakage assay is fully compatible with the commonly applied pH-stat transport assay, and therefore it allows for differentiation of ion transport and nonselective leakage mechanisms within a single set of experiments. In the second part of this study a new methodology for the detection of lipid flip was developed. This methodology relies on the quenching of the fluorescence of a newly synthesized cascade-blue-labeled lipid through complex formation with cyclen 1. This receptor-dye complexation also has high affinity for binding at micromolar concentrations and can be reversed by either competitive displacement of the lipid probe or by enzymatic degradation of the receptor leading to the label release and fluorescence dequenching. This new methodology is suitable for the study of lipid flip in both model spherical bilayer membranes and in-vitro experiments, and is less invasive to the model and cell membranes than the commonly utilized 7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl (NBD)-dithionite methodology. Lastly, new pH-sensitive lipids were synthesized and utilized in the formulation of liposomes suitable for controlled drug release. These liposomes contain various amounts of internal NaCl and undergo internal acidification upon the exogenous addition of an HCl co-transporter in a physiologically relevant NaCl solution. Therefore, acidification ultimately leads to the hydrolysis of the pH-sensitive lipids and subsequent contents release. These liposomes were found to be insensitive to physiological concentrations of human serum albumin and to be non-toxic to cells at concentrations exceeding pharmacological relevance. These results render this new drug release model potentially suitable for in vivo applications.

Abstract:
Thermal management is a rapidly growing field in power electronics today. As power supply systems are designed with higher power density levels, keeping component temperatures within suitable ranges of their maximum operating limits becomes an increasingly challenging task. This project focuses on thermal management at the system level, using a 1.2 kW front-end power converter as a subject for case study. The establishment of a methodology for using the computer code I-deas to computationally simulate the thermal performance of component temperatures within the system was the primary goal. A series of four benchmarking studies was used to verify the computational predictions. The first test compares predictions of a real system with thermocouple measurements, and the second compares computational predictions with infrared camera and thermocouple measurements on a component mounted to a heat sink. The third experiment involves using flow visualization to verify the presence of vortices in the flow field, and the fourth is a comparison of computational temperature predictions of a DC heater in a controlled flow environment. A radiation study using the Monte Carlo ray-trace method for radiation heat transfer resulted in the reduction of some component temperature predictions of significant components. This radiation study focused on an aspect of heat transfer that is often ignored in power electronics. A component rearrangement study was performed to establish a set of guidelines for component placement in future electronic systems. This was done through the use of a test matrix in which the converter layout was varied a number of different ways in order to help determine thermal effects. Based on the options explored and the electrical constraints on the circuit, an optimum circuit layout was suggested for maximum thermal performance. This project provides a foundation for the thermal management of power electronics at the system level. The use of I-deas as a computational modeling tool was explored, and comparison of the code with experimental measurements helped to explore the accuracy of I-deas as a system level thermal modeling tool.

Abstract:
Pedagogical methodology has rarely been considered as a driving force in educational facilities planning and design. Because of constantly changing learning modalities, state standardization of learning and incredibly diverse educational demographic, designing learning spaces that support various pedagogies is paramount if our students are to succeed in the knowledge-based economy. From its beginnings as the rural one-room school house to the contemporary single volume, teaching and learning methodologies are continually changing and adapting to contemporary necessity. Little emphasis has been placed over the qualitative aspects of facilities planning, and how children may benefit from varying spatial environments. No practical and consistent concept of open-space learning has ever been established when considering open-concept education. This is the fundamental tenet to this master's thesis. This thesis will analyze contemporary learning methodologies with particular emphasis on physical learning and the transition to digital learning. Through the analysis of varying pedagogies specific qualitative themes, modalities, and hierarchical mechanisms will be made known and the architectural design strategies will draw upon these themes. The thesis presents information necessary to designing within a neighborhood sensitive to history and place. The rich significance of place in the Mississippi/Yazoo Delta will be a driving force in the design of a K-6 Elementary school to replace the existing school. The thesis will additionally draw upon the analysis of various precedents, demographic studies, site analyses, and code analyses to establish an architecture rich in character and performative qualities necessary for growing minds.

The first step in the assembly of an overset grid system is to cut holes or to mark points that are inside a solid body and outside the domain of interest. Most existing approaches have been developed for use only with structured grids. A fast and robust approach that can be applied to structured, unstructured, or generalized grid topologies, with a minimum of user inputs, is desired. A new hole cutting process is presented that utilizes a Cartesian Binary tree representation of the geometry to provide a fast and efficient algorithm applicable to generalized grids. An algorithm has also been developed to mark the fringe points and find its donors. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by testing it on generalized and structured grids.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to create a methodology that evaluates the security posture of container images and helps improve container security. This was done by first searching for any guidelines or standards that focus on container images and security. After finding none, I decided to create an evaluative methodology. The methodology is composed of actions that users should take to evaluate the security of a container image. The methodology was created through in-depth research on container images and the build instructions used to create them and is referred to as the Security Evaluation Methodology for Container Images. The entire Methodology was reviewed by experts in containers, information technology, and security; updated based on their feedback; and then reviewed again for further feedback. Four of the most popular container images—nginx, redis, mbabineau/cfn-bootstrap, and google/cadvisor—were evaluated using the Methodology. The evaluation revealed security issues in each image and provided direction on how to resolve each issue. Based on the positive feedback of experts and the performance of the Methodology, I propose that the Methodology be used to evaluate all container images, as it provides valuable security insights about, and suggestions for, an image.

Roadway safety continues to be a priority for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division. UDOT has participated in and managed several research projects in recent years to determine the roadway segments of highest safety concern in the state. This research has provided UDOT with more tools to assist in safety project prioritization. Researchers in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) have worked with UDOT and the Statistics Department at BYU to create two network screening statistical tools called the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM) and the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM) to analyze roadway segment safety. The Roadway Safety Analysis Methodology (RSAM) was developed as a process to run these segment models. Because a significant portion of crashes occur at intersections, there is a need to analyze roadway safety specifically at intersections. This research focuses on the development of the Utah Intersection Crash Prediction Model (UICPM) and the Intersection Safety Analysis Methodology (ISAM). The UICPM is a Bayesian generalized linear model that determines crash distributions for each intersection based on roadway characteristics and historical crash data. The observed number of crashes at each intersection is compared with the crash distribution, and a percentile value is calculated as the probability that the number of crashes occurring at an intersection in a particular year is less than or equal to the average annual number of crashes. A high percentile value indicates that more crashes were observed than expected and the intersection is a hot spot and should be considered for safety improvements. All intersections are ranked at the state, UDOT Region, and county levels based on the percentile value, the higher ranks having higher percentile values. The ISAM is the three-step process that was developed to execute the UICPM. The first step is to prepare the model input by formatting and combining the roadway characteristics and crash data files. Crashes are assigned to intersections if they fall with the functional area of an intersection. Due to data limitations, the ISAM is currently being used only for intersections of at least two state routes. It is anticipated that, as more data are made available, the ISAM will function properly for intersections of non-state routes as well. The second step is to execute the UICPM using the R GUI tool and R software. The third step is to create a two-page Intersection Safety Analysis Report (ISAR) for intersections of interest and maps of the state, UDOT Regions, and counties with the model results. Parts of the ISARs are auto-generated and the rest is entered manually by an analyst. The two-page ISARs will be used by UDOT Regions to prioritize intersection safety projects in their respective areas.

Abstract:
This research document is motivated by the need for a systemic, efficient quality improvement methodology at universities. There exists no methodology designed for a total quality management (TQM) program in a university. The main objective of this study is to develop a TQM Methodology that enables a university to efficiently develop an integral total quality improvement (TQM) Plan. Current research focuses on the need of improving the quality of universities, the study of the perceived best quality universities, and the measurement of the quality of universities through rankings. There is no evidence of research on how to plan for an integral quality improvement initiative for the university as a whole, which is the main contribution of this study. This research is built on various reference TQM models and criteria provided by ISO 9000, Baldrige and Six Sigma; and educational accreditation criteria found in ABET and SACS. The TQM methodology is proposed by following a seven-step meta-methodology. The proposed methodology guides the user to develop a TQM plan in five sequential phases: initiation, assessment, analysis, preparation and acceptance. Each phase defines for the user its purpose, key activities, input requirements, controls, deliverables, and tools to use. The application of quality concepts in education and higher education is particular; since there are unique factors in education which ought to be considered. These factors shape the quality dimensions in a university and are the main inputs to the methodology. The proposed TQM Methodology is used to guide the user to collect and transform appropriate inputs to a holistic TQM Plan, ready to be implemented by the university. Different input data will lead to a unique TQM plan for the specific university at the time. It may not necessarily transform the university into a world-class institution, but aims to strive for stakeholder-oriented improvements, leading to a better alignment with its mission and total quality advancement. The proposed TQM methodology is validated in three steps. First, it is verified by going through a test activity as part of the meta-methodology. Secondly, the methodology is applied to a case university to develop a TQM plan. Lastly, the methodology and the TQM plan both are verified by an expert group consisting of TQM specialists and university administrators. The proposed TQM methodology is applicable to any university at all levels of advancement, regardless of changes in its long-term vision and short-term needs. It helps to assure the quality of a TQM plan, while making the process more systemic, efficient, and cost effective. This research establishes a framework with a solid foundation for extending the proposed TQM methodology into other industries.

With FinFET based Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designs delivering on the promises of scalability, performance, and power, the road ahead is bumpy with technical challenges in building efficient ASICs. Designers can no longer rely on the ‘auto-scaling’ power reduction that follows technology node scaling, in these times when 7nm presents itself as a ‘long-lived’ node. This leads to the need for early power analysis and reduction flows that are incorporated into the ASIC Intellectual Property (IP) design flow. This leads to a focus on power-efficient design in addition to being functionally efficient. Power inefficiency related hotspots are the leading causes of chip re-spins, and a guideline methodology to design blocks in a power-efficient manner leads to a power-efficient design of the Integrated Circuits (ICs). This alleviates the intensity of cooling requirements and the cost. The Common Memory controller is one of the leading consumers of power in the ASIC designs at Ericsson. This Thesis focusses on developing a power analysis and reduction flow for the common memory controller by connecting the verification environment of the block to low-level power analysis tools, using motivated test cases to collect power metrics, thereby leading to two main goals of the Thesis, characterization and optimization of the block for power. This work also includes an energy efficiency perspective through the Differential Energy Analysis technique, initiated by Qualcomm and Ansys, to improve the flow by improving the test cases that help uncover power inefficiencies/bugs and therefore optimize the block. The flow developed in the Thesis fulfills the goals of characterizing and optimizing the block. The characterization data is presented to provide an idea of the type of data that can be collected and useful for SoC architects and designers in planning for future designs. The characterization/profiling data collected from the blocks collectively contribute to the Electronic System-level power analysis that helps correlate the ASIC power estimate to silicon. The work also validates the flow by working on a specific sub-block, identifying possible power bugs, modifying the design and validating improved performance and thereby, validating the flow.

The Personal Computer is one of the most versatile inventions of the modern world. From its introduction in the 1980s, businesses have used these devices to perform everything from routine administrative tasks to complex engineering activities. Without proper attention to the security, companies put their ongoing operations and data at risk of theft, alteration, or destruction. Employees using personal computing systems are the primary gatekeepers of intellectual property and at the same time are the source of most data breaches. The purpose of this study was to analyze attitudes and behavioral patterns of end-users who repeatedly fall victim to simulated phishing attacks. Using a Q-Methodology approach, participants rated their level of agreement or disagreement of statements collected from research about end-user attitude and training towards computer security. Analysis of participant responses yielded three factors that demonstrated a pattern of behavior and opinion and categorized participants into three groups; gatekeepers, oblivions, and conformists. Analysis of the three group’s alignment with the studies research questions reveals that although all groups are well trained in computer security procedure and policy, two of the groups demonstrate deficiency in recognizing cyber risk and understanding how to protect against the threat. For companies to be secure, the end-user must view themselves as the primary gatekeeper to protect intellectual property. Technology can be circumvented, passwords can be compromised, and systems can be penetrated. The most effective method therefore to combat cyber threat is to create a culture of vigilance that every end-user understands, accepts, and embraces as their primary responsibility.

This thesis aims at developing a (dis/re)assembly oriented methodology towards product end-of-life. Particular focus in this thesis is on the circularity of furniture via design for (dis/re)assembly. The main motivation behind this study was the need for a method to evaluate the (dis/re)assembly options of furniture designs to be able to facilitate repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, or recycling. The study draws upon relevant theories and prior research on Circular product Design, Design for EoL, Design for Environment, and Design for (Dis)assembly of vehicles, electrical and elocronic equipments, whitegoods, as well as office furniture, though relatively limited. The proposed methodology determines major aspects of design for (dis/re)assembly to be taken in to consideration in the early stages of product development. It further provides a set of parameters that are relevant to cabinet type and upholstery furniture group. The study involves a variety of qualitative research methods that are embedded in an interactive research conduct with the engagement of different stakeholders that are charged with the task of product development at Ikea of Sweden (IoS), the collaborator of this study.  The proposed methodology is implemented on three selected furniture designs in a pilot study. The results of the study, above all, suggest that (dis/re)assemblability of a product is a strategic choice that needs to be made at early phases of product development, namely the design phase. Two particular features of the furniture groups, upon which this study focuses, emerges as factors having negative impact on the disassemblability of products: first, wooden frame sofas with respect to their complex structure and connectivity of componants and, second, permanent joints with respect to their destructive impact on the product. The study concludes that it is feasible to develop and implement a potentially comprehensible method to evaluate the ease of disassembly of furniture products and to design for disassembly. The proposed methodology in this study is a contribution to support product design for disassembly towards product circularity.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to research the possibility of realizing hardware support for hybrid single electron transistor (SET)-CMOS circuits by a systematic approach of design, analysis and simulation. The metallic SET transistors considered in this work are fabricated within the chip interconnect layers using CMOS back-end-of-line (BEOL)-compatible processing. The CMOS process integration can be divided into front-end-of-line (FEOL) and BEOL processes. The FEOL includes processes required to form isolated CMOS transistors whereas BEOL is the second portion of the IC fabrication where the devices get interconnected through the wiring using multiple layers of dielectrics and metals. Therefore, metallic SET circuits can be easily stacked above the CMOS platform presenting a low cost, low thermal budget, improving the overall yield at high-volume production of highly integrated systems. This considerably decreases the interconnect parasitics and increases the density of functions while maintaining the overall acceptable performance. Many problems such as low current drivability, delay and small voltage gain that hinder SET technology for its implementation in integrated circuits can be alleviated by intelligent circuit design. Although a complete replacement of CMOS by SETs is unlikely in the near future, an augmentation of CMOS with SETs is desirable if interfacing from and to CMOS works well. Interfacing from CMOS to SET circuitry is simple as the current and voltage levels are small and in accessible range. But interfacing CMOS from SET circuits is delicate due to SET logic's low current driving capability for CMOS and its interconnect. There is no concrete research on the interface issue wherein a SET-only circuitry drives a CMOS and its interconnects. For such hybridization to become possible, it is necessary to demonstrate the SET logic driving capability for CMOS with sufficient current drive and output voltage. The core SET logic can be designed to operate at low voltage, but at the interface the output of the SET logic must be in a voltage range that can be fed to a CMOS input for proper logic functionality. It is hence necessary to develop and adopt a systematic design methodology for such hybrid circuits at a specific technology node for room temperature operation. In this thesis we will look at a generalized design methodology that can be applied to (a) develop a fabrication model with parasitic effect of a hybrid SET-CMOS and SET-only circuits, (b) design and analyze the SET based fundamental building block in hybrid SET-CMOS or SET-only circuit and (c) simulate such a circuitry to assess its merits. More specifically, we will address the interfacing issue of such hybrid circuits in which we exploit the maximum capability of a SET logic in terms of driving capability, voltage response and power for a room temperature operation. The result of this research motivates the application of SET logic in 2 stages realizing some properties beyond those of CMOS devices. The first stage is the heterogeneous integration at chip level around a CMOS core. In such a circuitry, the SET introduces new functionalities such as reconfigurable logic, random number-based circuits, and multiband filtering circuits that can be combined with CMOS based general purpose processors or I/O signal restoration. The second stage of application is to use a new information processing technology focussed on a "new switch" exploiting a new state variable to provide functional scaling substantially beyond that attainable solely with ultimately scaled CMOS.

Complex interactive behaviour involves cognitive, sensation and motor behaviour and may consist of several sub interactive behaviours. It needs to be examined from different points of view. Although explaining everything in one model is not currently possible, it is possible to connect information from different sources to get a better understanding of the interaction to benefit product design. The long-term objective of our study is to develop a methodology for interactive virtual design assessment to study the interactive behaviour and achieve compatibility. This study summarized two experiments which covered many aspects of interactive behaviours in seated posture. Experiment one addressed manipulation behaviour and the hand control design of the car. Experiment two addressed seated reaching behaviour and ATM design. The two experiments are the basis of the advanced study for interactive virtual design assessment. They explored the limitations and advantages of digital prototypes and physical prototypes and suggested that digital prototypes and physical prototypes should be combined to provide design variations and to support human factor testing.

An operating room (OR) is considered to be one of the most costly functional areas within hospitals as well as its major profit center. It is known that managing an OR department is a challenging task, which requires the integration of many actors (e.g., patients, surgeons, nurses, technicians) who may have conflicting interests and priorities. Considering these aspects, this dissertation focuses on developing a simulation based methodology for scheduling operating rooms under uncertainty, which reflects the complexity, uncertainty and variability associated with surgery. We split the process of scheduling ORs under uncertainty into two main components. First, we designed a research roadmap for modeling surgical procedure duration (from incision to wound closure) based on the surgery volume and time variability. Then, using a real surgical dataset we modeled the procedure duration using parametric and distribution-free predictive methods. We found that Support Vector Regression performs better that Generalized Linear Models increasing the prediction accuracy on unseen data by at least 5.5%. Next, we developed a simulation based methodology for scheduling ORs through a case study. For that purpose, we initially built one day feasible schedules using the 60th, 70th, 80th, and 90th percentiles to allocate surgical procedures to ORs using four different allocation policies. We then used a discrete event simulation model to evaluate the robustness of these initial feasible schedules considering the stochastic duration of all the OR activities and the arrival of surgical emergency cases. We found that on average elective waiting almost doubled the time for the emergency cases. In addition, we observed that there is not a clear effect of how being more conservative in scheduling within each scheduling policy impacts the elective waiting times. By contrast, there is a clear effect of how the scheduling policy and scheduling percentile impact the emergency waiting times. Thus, as we increase the percentile, the waiting times for emergency cases remarkably increases under half of the scheduling policies but reflects a lesser impact under scheduling the other half. OR utilization and OR overtime in a "virtual" eight operating room hospital fluctuate between 67% and 88% and 97 and 111 minutes respectively. Moreover, we noticed that both performance metrics depend not only on the levels of the scheduling policy and scheduling percentile but also are strongly affected by the increase of the emergency arrival rate. Finally, we fit a multivariate-multiple-regression model using the output of the simulation model to assess the robustness of the model and the extent to which these results can be generalized to a single, aggregate hospital goal. Further research should include a true stochastic optimization model to integrate optimization techniques into simulation analysis.

Vibrations of a wind turbine have a negative impact on its performance and therefore approaches to effectively control turbine vibrations are sought by wind industry. The body of previous research on wind turbine vibrations has focused on physics-based models. Such models come with limitations as some ideal assumptions do not reflect reality. In this Thesis a data-driven approach to analyze the wind turbine vibrations is introduced. Improvements in the data collection of information system allow collection of large volumes of industrial process data. Although the sufficient information is contained in collected data, they cannot be fully utilized to solve the challenging industrial modeling issues. Data-mining is a novel science offers platform to identify models or recognize patterns from large data set. Various successful applications of data mining proved its capability in extracting models accurately describing the processes of interest. The vibrations of a wind turbine originate at various sources. This Thesis focuses on mitigating vibrations with wind turbine control. Data mining algorithms are utilized to construct vibration models of a wind turbine that are represented by two parameters, drive train acceleration and tower acceleration. An evolutionary strategy algorithm is employed to optimize the wind turbine performance expressed with three objectives, power generation, vibration of wind turbine drive train, and vibration of wind turbine tower. The methodology presented in this Thesis is applicable to industrial processes other than wind industry.

It has been estimated that one third of edible food destined for human consumption is lost or wasted along the food supply chain globally. Much of the waste comes from Global North, where consumers are considered as the bigger contributors. Different studies tried to analyze and estimate the Household Food Waste (HFW), especially in UK and Northern Europe. The result is that accurate studies at national level exist only in UK, Finland and Norway while no such studies are available in Italy, except for survey- based researches. Though, there is a widespread awareness that such methods might be not able to estimate Food Waste. Results emerging from literature clearly suggest that survey estimate inferior amounts of Food Waste as a result, if compared to waste sorting and weighting analysis or to diary studies. The hypothesis that household food waste is under-estimated when gathered through questionnaires has been enquired into. First, a literature review of behavioral economics and heuristics has been proposed; then, a literature review of the sector listing the existing methodologies to gather national data on Household Food Waste has been illustrated. Finally, a pilot experiment to test a mixed methodology is proposed. While literature suggests that four specific cognitive biases might be able to affect the reliability of answers in questionnaires, results of the present experiment clearly indicate that there is a relevant difference between how much the individual thinks to waste and he/she actually does. The result is a mixed methodology based on questionnaire, diary and waste sorting, able to overcome the cons of each single method.

This study compared student satisfaction and academic performance in online and face-to-face classes. 105 ITT Technical Institute students who were simultaneously enrolled in one online course and two on-campus courses were surveyed and interviewed. Factors examined included student to instructor communication, student to student interaction, content selection for online courses and course management for online courses. Sixty-four percent of the students did not pass their online courses and expressed dissatisfaction with the learning process. Course components and processes that could be improved were identified.

Abstract:

This research developed a methodology for the capacity planning of a furniture finishing system using both deterministic analysis and stochastic simulation. The thesis includes the development of an interface through which users can interactively build a simulation model of a finishing system. The Excel-based interface de-couples data input from the simulation model construction and execution. This provides a user-friendly tool for analyzing a finishing system. A manufacturing manager unfamiliar with simulation techniques can use the interface to conduct simulations and experiment with various input parameters such as line loading techniques and line speeds. Through the interface, results from the simulation can be used in an iterative process to analyze and refine design parameters of the finishing system. Adjustments to input parameters are made, and the model is re-simulated until the user discovers and eliminates any problem areas within an existing finishing system or accurately determines the required workstation capacities for a proposed system.
