Abstract:
A linguistic study of the replacement of the adverb "EKE" by the adverb "ALSO" in the expression of addition within an utterance and between utterances in the prose of the late Middle English period. This analysis is based upon the Theory of Enunciative Operations of Antoine Culioli, it deals principally with six literary texts of the XIVth and XVth centuries, and it also includes a collection of sermons of the first half of the XVth century. The texts of the corpus are treated in chronological order, the occurrences of "EKE" and "ALSO" are first listed and categorized, then they are analysed according to a typology of all the uses since the Old English period. Linguistic analysis is central in the study, but the conditions of text-production are also taken into account. The reflexion is founded on the concept of "situation of enunciation" and it is oriented towards the study of different types of discourse: the didactic type, the dialectic type, the homiletic type, and the narrative type

King, Jeanette Margaret. "Eke ki runga i te waka: the use of dominant metaphors by newly-fluent Māori speakers in historical perspective." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Maori and Indigenous Studies, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/977.

Full text
Abstract:
In language revitalisation movements the main impetus and passion is often provided by adults who, as second language speakers, have gained fluency in their heritage language. As parents and teachers these adults often have vital roles in the ongoing transmission of the heritage language. This study is based on interviews with thirty-two Māori adults who have each made a strong commitment to becoming a fluent speaker of Māori. The study posited that the informants would have a strongly-held worldview which enabled them to engage with and maintain a relationship with the Māori language. This worldview is expressed through a range of metaphors, the four most frequent being: LANGUAGE IS A PATH, LANGUAGE IS A CANOE, LANGUAGE IS FOOD, LANGUAGE LEARNER IS A PLANT. The worldview articulated by these metaphors has a quasi-religious nature and draws on elements of New Age humanism, a connection with Māori culture and ancestors as well as kaupapa Māori (Māori-orientated and controlled initiatives). The source domains for these metaphors are traced through a study of various Māori sources from the 19th century through to the present day. This study shows how exploitation of these metaphors has changed throughout this time period leading to their current exploitation by the newly-fluent informants. The metaphors preferred by the informants were contrasted with the prominent metaphor LANGUAGE IS A TREASURE, the entailments of which were found to be more relevant to the experience of native speakers. The informants' experience also contrasts with the focus of language planners in that the informants are more focussed on how the Māori language is important for them personally than how they contribute to the revitalisation of the Māori language. These findings have implications for the revitalisation of the Māori language and have relevance for other endangered languages.

Pretorius, Antoinette E. "‘To eke out the vocabulary of old age’ : literary representations of ageing in transitional and post-transitional South Africa." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/45906.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the depiction of ageing and old age in several key works of South African literature of the transitional and post-transitional period. The study covers texts set both in the transitional period prior to the 1994 democratic elections and in the years following that historical watershed. I examine how the literary representation of the ageing individual operates within the rhetoric of transition and new beginnings that characterizes the contemporary political and ideological climate of South Africa. The study includes a close examination of two novels (Age of Iron by J.M. Coetzee, and Agaat by Marlene van Niekerk), a collection of short stories (The Mistress’s Dog by David Medalie), and a volume of poetry (Body Bereft by Antjie Krog). My reading of these texts centres on exploring how the authors depict their ageing protagonists in relation to ideas of time, place and the body. Using Julia Kristeva’s theories on abjection, I analyse whether or not a degree of agency can be found in the abject depiction of older age. Similarly, I examine the ways in which reading older age through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin’s idea of the grotesque allows for a liberation from reductive understandings of the embodiment of ageing individuals. Because both Agaat and Body Bereft are translated from Afrikaans, I also explore the ways in which translation intersects with the socio-political ideologies of the periods in which these texts are set, as well as how this may have an impact upon the representation of older age. Through examining the tension between the nostalgic, backward-looking perspective usually attributed to old age, and the progressive, forward-looking sentiment of modern South Africa, I investigate the ways in which these writers – Coetzee and Van Niekerk in particular – associate the ageing body with political concerns. I also show how, in their different ways, all four writers counteract stereotypes associated with senescence.

Abstract:

This thesis asks whether is it possible in planning toformulate questions such that most participants feel invitedinto a discussion from the outset and discussions are notconducted from biased perspectives. The thesis concludes thatsuch questions are possible provided that they are supported toa large degree by the design of the discussion Agenda, participants really are interested in a mutual search forcreative answers, one party or actor does not have a powermonopoly–mentally, physically, economically, organisationwise or otherwise. The thesis analyses therelationship between methods and concepts used in physicalplanning and building–and the real outcome of planningdecisions.

The tendency for narrow minded and non-creative planningdiscussions and processes can have two basic outcomes: 1) Aplan that fulfils only a few possible goals or values isexpedited through the decision process. 2) No change at all ispossible–the planning process ends with status quo. Thegoal of this thesis is to present a planning model whichpromotes a broad and open-minded discussion on planning issues. An agenda that focuses more on possibilities and potentials, less on consequences and conflicts is presented.

The model consists of three perspectives–thehorizontal parameters; and ten aspects–the verticalparameters. ECN stands for three perspectives that I regard asequally important to consider in planning and building. Ifregarded as“the single most important and the superiorperspective”, any of these perspectives can result innarrow minded discussions and sub-optimal solutions. The threeperspectives underline the important need for“comprehensiveness”. According to my model, planningissues should be viewed from all three perspectives: E -Economic (financial) resources and perspectives. C - Cultural(humanistic) resources and perspectives. N - Natural(ecological) resources, and perspectives. Ten different aspectsare proposed. The ten aspects underline the need for creativediscussions. It is important to ask other questions than theusual ones. The ten aspects are formulated to involve differentactors in discussions that do not take their starting point infixed positions. The ten aspects are intended to help topromote open and creative discussions between different actorsand interests, as well as a willingness to focus onpossibilities and unforeseen potentials.

Planning questions should be asked from these ten aspects:ECN 1: Resources–identify available ECNresources. ECN 2:Potential–find possibilities that make good use of theseresources. ECN 3: Sustainability–create stable androbust solutions. ECN 4: Diversity–achieve variation andpluralism. ECN 5: Precaution–minimise risks andirreversible negative effects. ECN 6: Subsidiarity–distribute power and responsibility. ECN 7: Attractivity–create inspiring and desired solution. ECN 8: Synergy–foster co-operation and mutual advantages. ECN 9 : Benchmarking–make references and comparisons. ECN 10: The DevilsAdvocate–establish risk manageme nt and preparedness forcatastrophe. The two first aspects (Resources and Potentials)describe what could be seen as the overall goal of planning -to find and make good use of existing resources so as to createnew possibilities.

Nature inspires me, in this project I am working with the structure of tree trunks and bark, and the translation of things I see into woven fabrics. When I am in the nature I often feel calm and relaxed. I can ignore everything else in my environment. I would like to re-create this calm feeling and bring it into a room. In the different bark structures can I see an interesting variety in the shapes witch I would like to work with in textile. In my bachelor degree work I have designed textiles with measured acoustical effects for public spaces. By making samples and test them at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, I have examined the acoustic damping of the materials. The result is a collection of three woven fabrics with different appearances and sound affecting functions.

Full text
Abstract:
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a graphical representation of the electrical activity of the heart. The 12-lead ECG shows this activity in 12 "views" called "leads", relative to the location of sensors attached to the body surface. The ECG is a routinely applied cost effective diagnostic medical test, utilised in healthcare settings around the world. Although more than three hundred million ECGs are recorded each year, correctly interpreting them is considered a complex task. Failure to make correct interpretations can lead to injury or death and costs vast sums in litigation payments. Many automated attempts at interpreting ECGs have been implemented and continue to be developed and improved. Despite this, automated methods are still considered to be less reliable than expert human interpretation. As ECG interpretation is both a cognitive and visual task, eye-tracking holds great potential as an investigative methodology. This thesis aims to identify any cues in visual behaviour that may indicate differences in subsequent ECG interpretation accuracy. This is the first work that uses eye-tracking to analyse how practitioners interpret ECGs as a function of accuracy. In order to investigate these phenomenon, several experiments were carried out using eye-movements captured from clinical practitioners that interpret ECGs as part of their usual clinical role. The findings presented in this thesis have advanced research in the understanding of ECG interpretation. Specifically: Clinical history makes a difference to how people look at ECGs; different gaze patterns are often found in accurate and inaccurate interpretation groups. Grouping data to account for within ECG lead behaviour (eye-movement patterns within a lead) is more revealing than analysis at the level of the lead (eye-movements between leads). Findings suggest analysing visual behaviour at this level is crucial in order to detect behaviour in ECG interpretation. Further to this the thesis presents eye-tracking techniques that can be applied to wider areas of task performance. These methods work over complex stimuli, are able to deal post hoc with differently sized groups and generate appropriate areas of interest on a stimulus. These methods detect important differences in eye-movement behaviour between groups that are missed when applying standard inferential statistical techniques.

Main objective of this thesis was to learn about possibility of suppression of narrow band disturbances. We focused on use of Lynn’s filters. The objective was to realize these filters with respect to a fast algorithm of filtering. Concretely, for suppression of drift we realized the fast high pass filter with flexible cut off frequency. Then we realized filter for suppression of electrical network disturbance. We have realized these filters for sampling frequencies 250 and 500 Hz and we tested them with real ECG signals. Then we have evaluated their efficiency.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the minimum reinforcement inconcrete structures and the changes made in theregulations on this with the introduction of EKS 10. EKS10, which was introduced January 1, 2016, is theswedish national annex to the common Eurocode. Theintroduction of EKS 10 has meant that more chaptersfrom Eurocode have been adapted to swedishconditions and that the requirements for minimumreinforcement has been mitigated. As part of the thesis a calculation template has beencreated in Microsoft Excel designed to facilitate thecalculation of minimum reinforcement forByggnadstekniska byrån in Stockholm. In addition tocreating the template, common concrete sections havebeen analyzed with respect to the reinforcementquantities and the economy. The results show that the minimum amount ofreinforcement has been reduced in all of the crosssectionexamined in this thesis. The amendedprovisions have had the consequence that the minimumquantity of rienforcement in respect to reduction ofcrack width in beams and slabs have been decreased bybetween 10 and 32 percent. For walls the minimumamount of vertical reinforcement fallen by 50 percent inslender walls and by 100 percent non slender walls, while the minimum horizontal rienforcement decreasedby 75 and 100 percent respectively.According to the calculations done for a supposedexample floor, this causes a potential reduction inmaterial costs of up to 65 or 118 SEK per square meter, depending on whether or not the walls are regarded asslender.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Sweden and if these heart defects can be diagnosed at an early stage, the chance of survival in the sufferer is very high. This project involved designing a modular and portable ECG system that can measure at least seven leads and wirelessly over Bluetooth Low Energy transfer ECG data to a computer or mobile where it can be saved for later analysis. The three modules used in the project are a demonstration board from Texas Instrument, which builds around the analog to digital converter ADS1298 designed to collect ECG data, Nordic Thingy 52 which wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy transmits the collected ECG data and a Raspberry Pi for storage and data management. The measured values must be saved in a file that can later be used to visualize an ECG complex.  The work began with a feasibility study and a design specification as a basis for the ECG system. When the system was implemented several different ECGs was done to test so that data transfer and filtering were correct. The completed ECG system proved to meet the requirements set at the beginning of the project and has a very high potential for improvement in the future.

Abstract:
Within healthcare there is a market pull for biomedical devices that can rapidly perform laboratory processes, such as diagnostic testing, in a hand-held format. For this reason, biomedical devices must become smaller, more sophisticated, and easier to use for a reasonable cost. However, despite the accelerating academic research on biomedical microdevices, and especially plastic-based microfluidic chips, there is still a gap between the inventions in academia and their benefit to society. To bridge this gap there is a need for new materials which both exhibit similar properties as industrial thermoplastics, and that enable rapid prototyping in academia. In this thesis, thiol-ene and thiol-ene-epoxy thermosets are evaluated both in terms of their suitability for rapid prototyping of biomedical microdevices and their potential for industrial manufacturing of “lab-on-chips”. The first part of the thesis focuses on material development of thiol-ene and thiol-ene-epoxy thermosets. Chemical and mechanical properties are studied, as well as in vitro biocompatibility with cells. The second part of the thesis focuses on microfabrication methods for both thermosets. This includes reaction injection molding, photostructuring, and surface modification. It is demonstrated how thiol-ene and thiol-ene-epoxy both provide advantageous thermo-mechanical properties and versatile surface modifications via “thiol-click chemistry”. In the end of the thesis, two applications for both polymer platforms are demonstrated. Firstly, thiol-ene is used for constructing nanoliter well arrays for liquid storage and on-demand electrochemical release. Secondly, thiol-ene-epoxy is used to enhance the biocompatibility of neural probes by tuning their flexibility. It is concluded that both thiol-ene and thiol-ene-epoxy thermosets exhibit several properties that are highly suitable for rapid prototyping as well as for scalable manufacturing of biomedical microdevices.

Abstract:
The interpretation of the ECG is an important method in the diagnosis of abnormal heart conditions and can be used proactively to discover previ-ously unknown heart problems. Being able to easily measure the ECG and get it analyzed and presented in a clear manner without having to consult a doctor is improtant to satisfy consumer needs. This report describes how an ECG signal is treated with different algo-rithms and methods to detect the heartbeat and its various parameters. This information is used to classify each heartbeat separately and thus determine whether the user has a normal or abnormal cardiac function. To achieve this a software prototype was developed in which the algorithms were implemented. A questionnaire survey was done in order to examine how the output of the software prototype should be presented for a user with no medical training. Seven ECG files from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database were used for validation of the algorithms. The developed algorithms could detect of if any abnormality of heart function occurred and informed the users to consult a physician. The presentation of the heart function was based on the result from the questioner.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with a proposition of an algorithm for QRS complex and typical ECG waves boundaries detection. It incorporates a literature research focused on heart electrophysiology and commonly used methods for ECG fiducial points detection and delineation. Out of the presented methods an algorithm based on a continuous wavelet transform is implemented. Detection and delineation algorithm is tested on CSE standard signal database towards references determined both manually and automatically. Obtained results are compared to other congenerous methods. The diploma thesis is further concerned with an algorithm modification for experimental electrocardiograms of isolated rabbit hearts. Recording specifics of these data are introduced. Additionally, based on time and frequency analysis, particular modifications of the algorithm are proposed and realized. Due to a large extent of records functionality is verified on randomly selected database samples. Efficiency of the modified algorithm is evaluated through manually annotated references.
