Full textThis bachelor thesis is based on case studies of construction companies that operate in Sweden, Europe and the US. The focus of the studies was how these three Swedish construction companies apply and translate global environmental goals in their work. Hence, the study concentrated on the global concepts of sustainability, ecological sustainability and Agenda 2030. These concepts underwent a close analysis concerning how they can be interpreted, translated and become operational in practice depending on different expertise and profession. Based on this analysis, the concepts of sustainability and ecological sustainability were interpreted to some potential understandings to be used in this study. To analyse how the three Swedish construction companies understand and promote environmental goals, each company’s website were analysed regarding the concept of sustainability, ecological sustainability and comprehensive global goals in the field of construction. The companies included were NCC AB, Peab AB and Skanska AB. The purpose of the study was to gain knowledge about how these companies work with sustainability and act on new environmental goals. In addition, three representatives for each company were interviewed based on questions that related to the company’s work with sustainability. The interviews aimed at acquiring further knowledge on each company’s work with sustainability. Due to the spread of the COVID-19, the representatives were interviewed online. An increased knowledge of how to manage and work with ecological sustainability is an important aspect that needs to be developed and improved in the field of built environment and architecture in order to improve our homes and activities in the community. In order to create a better indoor and outdoor environment for man and nature, it’s necessary to improve the work behind ecological sustainability. In this study, visualisations and tables help the reader to understand the concepts used in this study.

Full textClimate impact of production and consumption is a current societal problem. Many companies benefit in economic growth from consumption, which can create a conflict where the climate impact is set against economic gain. Many opportunities arise from integrating ecological sustainability into the company´s product development, such as the opportunity to create a new market, a new type of technology or a new product category. Knowing that many new companies are started every year, and their limited financial capabilities makes it interesting to study the approach to ecological sustainability in the product development process of start-ups. The purpose of the paper was to investigate how the integration of ecological sustainability and environmental aspects take place in the product development process in start-ups, how environmental work is prioritized against other factors in starting up a company and why the company chose its priorities. A literature study has formed the basis for the problematization and the theoretical frame of reference. The study was based on a qualitative interview study in which six respondents from five start-ups were interviewed. The companies were from different industries, registered between 2017 and 2019 and were based in Stockholm. Results from the study showed that several of the interviewed companies made ecologically conscious design and construction decisions, applied circular economy as they planned to have products returned to the company and tried to minimize their ecological footprint. The companies were limited in both time and economic resources, which is evident in lack of environmental certifications and being unable to choose suppliers in Sweden and Europe because they were too expensive. A major challenge for many of the companies was that they were small companies in the market and therefore found it difficult to place environmental requirements on suppliers and deviate from industry standards. The respondents’ personal driving forces were not always reflected in the company structure and the priority of ecological sustainability in the product development process.

Full textThe Stockholm County regional planning agency wants to develop its work on digitalisation in Regional Planning with a focus on ecological sustainability. The purpose of this report is to contribute to this work by comparing and identifying ways that digitalisation is treated in regional planning in order to achieve ecological sustainability. The concept of "digitalisation" refers to the process where technology and digital information becomes a part of the community. The concept of "smart city" was identified as interesting and was interpreted for a "smart region", and what this could entail. Starting points to the issues were gathered in a workshop with the Stockholm region's Growth and Regional Planning Administration, as well as in an interview with an expert. A study was conducted of the five metropolitan regions’ regional planning documents, and of literature on regional planning, digitalisation and ecological sustainability. Seven strategies for digitalisation and ecological sustainability in regional planning were identified on the basis of the regional planning documents. A digital platform was identified as a possible way to work with services that are linked to the strategies. In the literature analysis tools were found which were used to identify how the strategies of digitalisation can lead to increased environmental sustainability. After that it was discussed how the digital platform can interact with regional planning, as well as how the digital platform and the collaboration platform can be understood from a planning theoretical angle.

Full textEcologic sustainability has become increasingly important in the public debate, as well as among companies and investors in the recent years. This causes the investments companies to further improve their product development processes to meet the requirements concerning sustainability. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the knowledge on how investment companies work with ecological sustainability in their product development process. The thesis examines four research questions, all of them linked to the investment companies' work concerning ecological sustainability. Initially, a literature study was conducted to provide the writers with knowledge and understanding of inclusion of ecological sustainability in the financial market. Five representatives representing four different investments companies in Stockholm were interviewed with focus on the integration of ecological sustainability in their product development processes. It has transpired that there was a big difference regarding how different investment companies worked with integration of ecological sustainability in working methods likewise in the scope. In conclusion, most investors somehow work with sustainability. The incentives for working with ecological sustainability varies. First, due to the increased demand from customers on ecologically sustainable products in more recent years. Secondly, many investments companies believe this will give a higher return. Although, the green market is still not big enough to give the investment companies the possibility to invest only in ecological sustainable companies. Also, reduced diversification can lead to an increased risk. Furthermore, there is still a shortage of guidelines concerning how an investment company can ensure whether an investment is sustainable or not. The new taxonomy aims to clarify this, although, it still has a need of further development in order to give a more nuanced picture of what actually is a sustainable investment.

Full textThe following study examines Generation Y's perception of credible marketing of ecological sustainability in the textile and fashion industry in digital media. The study is a qualitative interview study focusing on sustainability in marketing, the individual's interpretation of marketing and credibility. All data collection has been done through personal semi-structured interviews that, after transcription and analysis, ultimately lead to the result of the generation's perception of ecological marketing. The study's informants belong to generation Y, who are individuals born between 1978 and 1995. They all have post-secondary education and use digital media daily. The selection was chosen because the majority of the generation has a post-secondary education and thus higher salaries than other generations, but also because of their discerning and constantly comparative consumer behavior. The study involved eight informants who were included in the sample. The study's results show that generation Y, despite their discerning and constantly comparative consumer behavior, can be reached by marketing with ecological sustainability in the textile and fashion industry and that the generation prefers easily accessible and detailed information on how, why and what it results in. The generation also feels that numbers and statistics increase the sense of credible marketing in digital media and that scandals involving falsifying or withholding information about the brand's work on ecological sustainability cause them to lose their trust in the brand, in some cases even result in a refusal to consume from the brand.

Full textThe background to this master thesis is that the activities linked to the global economy and its growth has created a situation that currently does not uphold the ecological dimension of sustainability. Solutions to reduce the environmental impact of today while economic growth occurs has been criticized and instead economies with low or no growth have been proposed. With this in mind, the research project Beyond GDP growth have started. The master thesis is carried out for economic models which is one of the work packages within the project. The aim of the master thesis is partly to investigate the issue of sustainability with continued GDP growth to determine whether a possible conflict between economic and ecological sustainability exists. The objective is also to simulate a neoclassical equilibrium model for the Swedish economy to study its responses for different growth scenarios (growth, zero growth and negative growth). The parameters GDP, consumption, investment, amount of capital and amount of hours worked are studied. The idea is that the identification of a possible conflict between ecological and economic sustainability, combined with the analysis of the equilibrium model can be used to determine how economic models that take into account both the ecological and the economic dimension of sustainability could be designed.Whether a conflict between the economical and the ecological dimensions of sustainability exists is investigated with the help of a literature review. Furthermore, the neoclassical equilibrium model is not developed from scratch. Instead an already finished equilibrium model of the Finnish economy is used, which is then developed after prerequisites in the Swedish data. The model is then simulated in the time period 1990-2035 with scenarios for growth, zero growth and negative growth. Furthermore, a scenario of zero growth in which working hours are gradually decreases is simulated. The literature review indicates that a potential conflict between the ecological and the economical dimension of sustainability exist. The simulations of the neoclassical equilibrium model provides reliable results for the parameters GDP, consumption and amount of hours worked. The model's major weakness, however, is investments that differs in comparison with the data, which is probably the reason that minor deviations also occurs for amount of capital. The equilibrium model and the literature review are then discussed and the conclusion is made that the biggest weakness of the neoclassical equilibrium model is that it does not take into account natural resources (including energy) as a production function nor how pollutants affect them. A proposal which in turn is drawn up based on the conclusions is to update economic models (e.g. the equilibrium model) to include natural resources as a production factor so that the models also take into account the ecological dimension of sustainability. The result of such a model could then be used to communicate an optimal level of GDP and create consensus among economists, environmental scientists and policy makers about how a potential conflict between economic and ecological sustainability can be managed.

Full textAn increasing population combined with strong urbanization makes cities growing at a rapid pace, both in the world at large and also here in Sweden. A growing population results in anincreased construction demand and in order to ensure good living conditions for future generations, sustainable urban development is necessary. Particularly in ecological sustainability, measures are necessary, as the construction and real estate industry has a major impact on the quality of air, land and water. Today, the industry causes about 20% of Sweden'stotal greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce the environmental impact, the spatial planning has a number of different tools to use. Through optimized planning of the physical environment, the need for transports can bereduced, green areas can benefit, and the use of modern and sustainable technologies can be simplified. An important tool in spatial planning is the detailed development plan that regulates the use of land with legally binding effect. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze how detailed development plans can be used as a tool for enabling ecologically sustainable urban development. This is explored by studying the types of regulations that may be used by law, and how these, sometimes limited, opportunities can be used in a way to create opportunities for sustainability. The purpose is also to investigate how these opportunities are used in practice in the current detailed development plans. To research this, the regulatory framework was initially studied and then a case study was conducted in the form of a document study where relevant detailed development plans in the City of Stockholm were examined. In order to be able to compare the studied detailed development plans in a structured way, an analysis model has been developed based on the environmental goals set by the City of Stockholm. Using the analysis model, the detailed development plans have been reviewed, focusing on how the plans regulate green areas, sustainable building materials and energy supply as well as sustainable transports. The study's results show that the detailed development plan is a tool among several others to regulate sustainability in urban development. In isolation, the detailed plan works primarily to create opportunities for sustainable development, while it has limited opportunities to regulateand control this in more detail. The case study shows that the studied detailed development plans, some of these possibilities are widely used, while others are used to a very limited extent. This gives the impression that there are more the city’s spatial planners can do to promote the development of an ecologically sustainable city to a greater extent.

Full textThe Industrial Revolution had its beginnings in the middle of the 18th century. Today we are athe beginning of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 where smart technologies are integrated in factories. One result of this is the collection and management of large amounts of data, which has introduced Big Data into the manufacturing industry. At the same time, the focus on ecological sustainability is growing due to the increased environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources. Therefore, an important aspect of Industry 4.0 is to implement smart technologies that make factories more ecologically sustainable. This study consists of a theory study, where information is compiled from relevant scientific publications. In adition, the study includes interviews with relevant companies and researchers. Based on these, the question whether Big Data as a smart technology, affects manufacturing companies, from an ecological sustainability perspective, is answered. The results show that Big Data is a smart technology can contribute to a more energy efficient production, by collecting data and in various ways analysing and optimizing processes based on the collected information. However, the threshold for the technology can be steep, both in terms of pricing and knowledge. Furthermore, Big Data can also accelerate the shift to a more circular economy, by collecting data and making informed decisions regarding the transition to a more circular and ecologically sustainable production. In adition, Big Data can facilitate and be implemented in circular services, such as machine rental, which replaces linear and traditional methods, where the product is purchased, used and discarded. Big Data can also be used in the form of predictive maintenance, which reduces the use of ecological resources by collecting and analysing real-time data to make decisions, which in turn can increase the service life of the equipment. This also reduces the amount of spare parts and scrap. The study therefore shows that Big Data can contribute to increased ecological sustainability in various ways.

Full textFrom a public health and society perspective, food production is the biggest cause of global environmental change and also a risk factor for ill health. At the same time, diet is a fundamental determinant of health. Restaurants have a major influence on sustainable consumption and production, on benefiting the global ecosystem. At the same time, restaurants have a responsibility to serve environmentally friendly food, which is beneficial from a public health perspective. In this study, the purpose was to study restaurant managers' attitudes and applications around serving food from an ecological sustainability perspective. The method was a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews that were analyzed on the basis of a content analysis. The results showed generally positive attitudes towards buying raw products that are seasonal, locally produced and organic in order to protect the environment and health. When it comes to future challenges and solutions, there was a concern about being able to satisfy the needs of future generations, linked to environmental changes. The cut of the meat industry was highlighted by the restaurant managers as the biggest challenge, in relation to improving the environment and thus public health. It also turned out that the use of food froman ecological sustainability perspective is in some cases hampered by financial resources. Crucial factors in relation to serving food from an ecological sustainability perspective were both financial resources and knowledge of the subject. On the other hand, the results showed that knowledge was in most cases more decisive than financial assets. With this result, it can be concluded that there is an additional need for knowledge as well as financial need in the subject for restaurants to act more ecologically sustainable.

Full textThis bachelor's thesis has been carried out as part of a research project at KTH. The development towards industry 4.0 will lead to new methods and tools for optimizing business operations. Sustainability is an important concept today and can be divided into three aspects: economic, ecological and social sustainability. Key performance indicators are a method for follow-up, control and reporting and are thus important for businesses where it can be used as a basis for decisions. Digitalization has contributed to new digital technology, which are tools and systems that are available digitally and have facilitated the measurement of data, which was previously done manually. The reason for this work is that today there is a deficient basis for decision-making in material handling related to economic, ecological and social sustainability. The purpose of this work is to produce important Key performance indicators in economic, ecological and social sustainability that can be used as a basis for decision-making to measure and improve the business's production logistics, more specifically the forklift operations in materials handling. This bachelor's thesis has been delimited in such a way that the key performance indicators presented refer only to the material handling within the logistics process and the material handling that is done with manned forklifts and nothing else. The key performance indicators described in this bachelor's thesis are measured with digital technology. The data collection was done with the help of literature search in books and various databases, interview transcripts with people at different levels in Scania and an interview with an assistant professor who works with the research project at KTH. On this basis it was clear that Scania does not have key performance indicators in logistics, but they have main goals, which is to avoid delays. After tracking sensors were introduced on the forklifts in Scania, the following real-time measurements could be made, temperature, humidity, speed, coordinates, timestamp, sound level, etc. Based on these real-time measurements, key performance indicators in all three aspects of sustainability can be identified and presented. Key performance indicators on economic sustainability are about time, ecological sustainability is about optimization and social sustainability is about security. The key performance indicators are suitable because they give an indication of where the opportunities for improvement lie in terms of resource management, security and efficiency. These key performance indicators can be used as a basis for decision-making to streamline the business' resource utilization and planning technology. The challenges with digital technology were that it is lacking at times, as it sometimes indicated movement from a forklift that in reality did not occur.

Full textInstagram is a social network that is very popular in Sweden. On Instagram, users take part of information in the form of images from accounts they have chosen to follow. The dissemination of information regarding climate change needs to be more effective. People's environmental degradation habits are a problem and need to be changed, but rooted behavior patterns can be difficult to break. The public needs a nudge in the right direction to live more climate-smart and to make more environmentally-friendly choices. The aim of the study is to, in a qualitative way, investigate how a feed on Instagram, can affect university students with a focus on climate change. The research question which the paper is based on is; How is the user affected, from an environmental perspective, by a feed on Instagram? The approach to investigate this meant that the participants used a modified Instagram account, the methods used are diary and individual semi-structured interviews. Patterns in the collected material from the diaries and interviews are structured under different themes and the result shows that the participants of the study have been affected in different ways. They have learned new things, acted on tips and recipes, shopped second hand, followed accounts that spread information about the environment from their own Instagram account, and had the climate situation more frequent in their thoughts. All these types of actions have in common that they are no big life adjustments, but rather simpler actions that are easy to apply in everyday life. More complicated actions, like growing their own herbs, raised an interest and the action was not performed. The discussion addresses the reasons for the different ways in which the participants have been affected and ties in with theories of social influence and nudging.

Full textCurrent food consumption worldwide contributes to global environmental degradation. In order to promote sustainable development, alternative nutritional sources need to be used and insects are a nutritious food with high protein quality that can replace other traditional animal products. Insects as food are in the western world usually associated with negative attitudes such as disgust and neophobia, which prevents a global diet that includes insects. Physically active consumers are often dedicated to a balanced diet with enough energy and nutrition. The aim of this study is to analyze physically active consumers and their attitudes to insects as food and compare whether these are affected by information on nutritional content and ecological sustainability. The study also aims to find out how their attitudes can be used to present insects as food in an attractive way. The study was conducted as a web-based survey. The survey was preceded, for half of the participants, by information about insects as food based on ecological sustainability and nutritional content. The study, in a comparison between the two groups, found that the type of information the participants received did not have a significant impact on physically active consumers' attitudes towards insects as food. Acceptance of food is a complex phenomena and requires consumers to have time to get used to eating insects, for example, by gradually reducing disgust. The results show that this can be done by serving ground insects in a well-known food product.

Full textBackground: A new district called Vallastaden in Linköping is under construction and the residents will be moving in during 2017. The district has clearly expressed and visionary goals concerning ecological and social sustainability. Vallastaden will be unveiled to the public in an exhibition during the fall of 2017.Aim: The aim of this paper is to analyse how the physical features in a residential area can make its future inhabitants behave in more sustainable ways.Completion: This paper utilizes two methods: text analysis and hypothetical reasoning. The theoretical framework is based on economic theory, the earlier studies focus on specific areas within ecological and social sustainability. The empirics are collected from sources available to the future inhabitants of Vallastaden, the residential area we have chosen to study. They include Vallastaden’s webpage, documents and resolutions from Linköping County as well as public information from the constructors and others involved in the project. The analysis introduces three hypothetical types of individuals who pose as potential inhabitants of Vallastaden. Conclusion: City planning can change human behaviour, influencing inhabitants to behave in a more sustainable manner. It does not only depend on the physical features, but also on the institutions that will be created on different social levels. Keywords: City

Full textThe purpose with the essay is to point out how the main differences of the Helsinkicommission, Helcom and Baltic 21 can be explained from a general perspective and with a specific focus on two of their ongoing projects: Baltic 21 Lighthouse projects and The Baltic Sea Joint Comprehensive Environmental Action Plan. And to investigate how the organisations them selves formulates the purpose of the two projects. This will be an indication on why environmental problems are handled with in a traditional matter although the rhetoric of the environmental politics is permeated by the concept of Sustainable Development.
This dilemma is being treated from the theoretical approaches of Ecological Modernisation and Sustainable Development and linked to how these organisations actually carried out their work and how the historical heritage have a role to play in this complex of problems. The results of the essay shows that concrete differences exists in the way that the two organisations are constructed and how their ongoing projects are designed and formulated. These differences can be derived to the theoretical platforms Ecological Modernisation and Sustainable Development and be explained by in witch political context the organisations were created. Helcom and The Baltic Sea Joint Comprehensive Environmental Action Plan are operating within the framework of Ecological Modernisation and Baltic 21 and the Lighthouse projects within Sustainable Development.

Full textSustainable development is one of the most relevant topics to deal with today. Especially in the area of urban planning it has become one of the most important questions to discuss. In Sweden we have for the last two decades seen several development projects that have set examples for sustainable and ecological living environments. In this essay we want to clarify whether sustainable and ecological living environments are going to be a norm in the future of urban planning. We have compared two development projects which have had great impact on sustainable urban planning, Bo01 in Malmö and Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm. These two projects have generated new innovations for a more environmental-friendly housing. We have compared their methods of working and results to a new, ongoing development project in the city of Helsingborg called H+. We have analyzed how they, compared to Bo01 and Hammarby Sjöstad, are working towards being a role model for sustainable urban development which is their goal (Stadsbyggnadsförvaltningen, 2008a:5). In our study we have reached the conclusion that in Sweden we are far from setting a norm for ecological living environments and that we need to elaborate better tools for planning and stricter demands from higher instances to reach this norm.

Full textSustainable Development is often considered from three different aspects: social well-being, care for the environment and economic growth. Within these three aspects the concept can have many different meanings. The concepts ambiguity makes it attractive to use, but it is also exposed to criticism for being too vaguely, and can therefore become an empty ideal. Sustainable Development can be seen as a global imperative and discourse where cities have become the arena for concretizing these ideals. Therefore, based on translation- and “Travels of ideas” theory, cities play a central role in the translation of the concept. The municipality of Malmö often desires to identify themselves as the sustainable city and they wrote in the cities latest comprehensive plan from 2014 that social, environmental and economic sustainability can only be achieved in tandem and are equally dependent on each other. Because of that the municipality of Malmö has determined that every one of their administrations are obligated to take in, and work with, Sustainable Development in their organizations. The purpose of this study is through qualitative interviews and analysis of documents and other written texts, see how the Environmental Administration in Malmö translates Malmö’s vision regarding Sustainable Development from the three different aspects in to their organization. The study is based on new institutionalism theory and the “Travels of ideas” model to see how an idea from the municipality of Malmö travels down and translates in to the Environmental administration in Malmö. The study's results show that Sustainable Development in the city of Malmö and in the Environmental administration has long been associated with ecological sustainability, but nowadays this is no longer the case. Today is the concept, Sustainable Development, associated with more than just ecological sustainability. One of the reasons that the concept has got a different meaning can trace back to Malmökommissionens report regarding social sustainability in Malmö. This study, showed that the interviewees had the same overall view regarding sustainable development, but when it came to clarifying the concept more concrete they gave it different meaning. The differences in the concepts meaning could be linked with the interviewees' duties and departmental affiliation.

Full textThis thesis shows the result of our study on how working with companies that sell organic products affects the workers’ motivation and identification with the company. Additionally it examines the role of knowledge about organic produce in relation to motivation and identification. Since we were interested in the opinions and feelings of workers, a qualitative study method was chosen in the form of semi-structured interviews. The reason behind this was that previous studies in general have a quantitative approach, mainly deducted through survey studies. Following this, the data of this study comes from seven interviews with salesmen from various companies and trades that all sell organic products, with the aim to provide a greater understanding for how selling organic products affects the worker. In order to systematically investigate our topic, three research questions were set about motivation, identification respectively knowledge, all in relation to selling organic products. These also construct the themes used in theory, empirical data and analysis and discussion. To understand these, several concepts are described and discussed including CSR, TBL, EoC, the5Cs of Happiness and the Two Factor Theory. The discussion around these are supported by previous studies which all contributed to shaping our interview guide and later on helped analyse the result. The interview guide and all other data are documented for future support and replications. The results of the study shows that selling organic products can be an effective method to motivate workers and give them a sense of purpose. Additionally it functions as a strong identification factor that binds the workers to the company and make them loyal and happier while they present better, all of which are important components of organizational development and success. To strengthen the motivation and identification these workers experience, knowledge is key - the more a worker understands and values organic products and the sustainability work the company does, the higher the motivation and identification with the company. The study contributes to the field by going more in depth and providing evidence for how comprehensive the effect of selling organic instead of conventional products can be. It provides a deeper understanding for people who work at companies that sell organic products and will hopefully inspire to conduct studies on a larger scale. This thesis is written in Swedish.
