Full textThe starting-point for our study has been to investigate if organic food is used as a tool in the teaching of environmental history. The research of teaching in environmental history motivates it’s purpose in many levels. The subject is supposed to be used in schools for interpretation of the local and global environmental situations in the world. We begin our study by uplifting different researchers motive for teaching environmentalhistory in schools. By interviewing teachers and students on the field it’s possible to see how good their knowledge is in organic food and Swedish history of agriculture. In our study we discuss subjects like environmental history, historical consciousness, ecological thinking and local history which are common subjects for us as future history teachers. The result of our investigations showed that there is weak intrest for organic food and Swedish agriculture among teachers, students and households. From our interviews we could tell that our students has a certain history consciousness to the connection between organic farming and Swedish history of agriculture before pesticides and industrial fertilizers.

These days the environmental problems are getting more in focus and the supply of organic food is increasing in the supermarkets. More people are buying organic food than before but the majority still chooses to buy conventional food despite that they’re often positive towards the organic option. To clarify what lies behind the consumers´ shopping habits I have interviewed four informants. Two who usually buy organic food and two who usually buy conventional food. There are several reasons why the consumer chooses to buy conventional food and not the organic option. When the consumer faces several options there are different factors such as quality, health, prize and ethical aspects that matter. Their existing shopping habits, knowledge and their social identity are also factors that matter. The two ecological consumers had knowledge and interest in organic food and despite the prize difference they appreciated the extra value of it. The conventional consumer lacked knowledge of organic food and didn’t appreciate its advantages. Instead they choose to buy food after their habits and the quality of the products.

Full textCurrent food consumption worldwide contributes to global environmental degradation. In order to promote sustainable development, alternative nutritional sources need to be used and insects are a nutritious food with high protein quality that can replace other traditional animal products. Insects as food are in the western world usually associated with negative attitudes such as disgust and neophobia, which prevents a global diet that includes insects. Physically active consumers are often dedicated to a balanced diet with enough energy and nutrition. The aim of this study is to analyze physically active consumers and their attitudes to insects as food and compare whether these are affected by information on nutritional content and ecological sustainability. The study also aims to find out how their attitudes can be used to present insects as food in an attractive way. The study was conducted as a web-based survey. The survey was preceded, for half of the participants, by information about insects as food based on ecological sustainability and nutritional content. The study, in a comparison between the two groups, found that the type of information the participants received did not have a significant impact on physically active consumers' attitudes towards insects as food. Acceptance of food is a complex phenomena and requires consumers to have time to get used to eating insects, for example, by gradually reducing disgust. The results show that this can be done by serving ground insects in a well-known food product.

Full textFrom a public health and society perspective, food production is the biggest cause of global environmental change and also a risk factor for ill health. At the same time, diet is a fundamental determinant of health. Restaurants have a major influence on sustainable consumption and production, on benefiting the global ecosystem. At the same time, restaurants have a responsibility to serve environmentally friendly food, which is beneficial from a public health perspective. In this study, the purpose was to study restaurant managers' attitudes and applications around serving food from an ecological sustainability perspective. The method was a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews that were analyzed on the basis of a content analysis. The results showed generally positive attitudes towards buying raw products that are seasonal, locally produced and organic in order to protect the environment and health. When it comes to future challenges and solutions, there was a concern about being able to satisfy the needs of future generations, linked to environmental changes. The cut of the meat industry was highlighted by the restaurant managers as the biggest challenge, in relation to improving the environment and thus public health. It also turned out that the use of food froman ecological sustainability perspective is in some cases hampered by financial resources. Crucial factors in relation to serving food from an ecological sustainability perspective were both financial resources and knowledge of the subject. On the other hand, the results showed that knowledge was in most cases more decisive than financial assets. With this result, it can be concluded that there is an additional need for knowledge as well as financial need in the subject for restaurants to act more ecologically sustainable.

Full textConventional food has a major environmental impact, which has caused more and more consumers to choose organic food. This is a thoroughly researched field. However, there is insufficient knowledge regarding whether senior citizens choose to buy organic food or not. The aim of the present study has been to examine the consumption of organic food among senior Swedish citizens. The study was conducted through surveys and semi-structured qualitative interviews. The results suggest that senior consumers have the same motives as younger consumers. They are also hindered by the same reasons as their younger counterparts. The only difference between the two groups is that senior citizen´s gender and family structure influence their organic food consumption less.

Full textThis study presents research on 90's generation’s attitudes to organic sustainable consumption. The study is written from a qualitative approach where data has been collected through two focus groups, one with men and one with women. The purpose is to examine the attitude of the 90’s generation to organic sustainable consumption and will be answered by three questions. The two first questions concerns the motivation and responsibility for organic sustainable consumption and the third is a comparison between gender. Analyzes are based on a theoretical framework with Schwartz Theory of Basic Values and Locus of Control. The results of the study shows that the attitudes to organic sustainable consumption are generally positive and complex. The values that emerged in the discussions expresses motives such as price, taste, health and environmental motives. Attitudes toward who is responsible to develop an organic sustainable consumption differs between the respondents, however they understand that the situation is complex and difficult to solve. Some of the participants believes the state or companies should deal with the problem, while some believe it is themselves as individuals who has the responsibility. Some attitudes and values differ between men and women, but there are different arguments in both groups and direct conclusions cannot be drawn between the genders. Both groups believe they have a lack of knowledge about what organic sustainable consumption means. This study contributes to a certain understanding of the 90’s generation view on sustainable consumption and what they consider necessary to develop a sustainable consumption. In order to achieve a more generalizable result, a quantitative study would be recommended for future research. This study is written in swedish.

Full textThis study focuses on the politics around ecological sustainable development in Sweden today, with emphasis on urban development, building and living. The starting-point for this study is the environmental adapted city district of Stockholm, Hammarby Sjöstad. The primary focus of the study is to investigate what means of control the environmental investment in Hammarby Sjöstad is expressing, and to elucidate their ideological, political and social implications. The empirical material is primarily based up on the local Hammarby Sjöstad environmental program along with qualitative in-depth interviews with citizens of this district. The study is based on critical discourse analysis
The result of this study is that the ecological investment in Hammarby Sjöstad partly constitutes a hidden exercise of power, taking shape as built-in physical measures in the dwellings and the neighbouring surroundings. Hidden means of control transform political and ideological environmental targets in to practical factual matters. Hidden means of control makes ideological and political environmental issues non-political and reduces them in to technical issues.

Full textChemical signals are the most widely used form of sexual communication throughout the living world. However, there is in general little knowledge about what these signals actually communicate. The role of chemical signals, i.e. pheromones, in sexual behaviour has traditionally been seen as restricted to mate attraction and species recognition. This thesis reviews the evidence for pheromones as indicators of mate quality, and then investigates three important factors for mate quality signals – individual variation, heritability and cost – by using the male pheromone of the lekking fruit fly Drosophila grimshawi as a model.
The experiments presented indicate that the pheromone of D. grimshawi has multiple functions, and that these functions vary with social context. Thus, with regard to females, the pheromone seems to act mainly as a species/mate recognition signal, since females show little preference for the amount of pheromone deposited by a male. Moreover, males invest less in pheromone production when subjected to females as compared to when subjected to rival males. However, the pheromone seems to be costly in production since males that invest much in pheromone deposition has a shorter lifespan. This suggests a function for the pheromone in male-male interactions. Males can distinguish their own pheromone depositions from those of a strange male, and also discriminate between pheromone depositions from one and two strange males. This might give them the ability to assess the size of a lek and the competitive capacities of rivals, information that should be useful when optimizing sexual behaviour.
In conclusion, the pheromone seems to act as an honest mate/competitor quality signal in some social contexts, and as a non-costly species/mate recognition signal in other. In addition, I show for the first time that a chemical signal has differential fitness costs, and that an insect is able to distinguish between individual odour signatures.

Full textThis study investigates vegetation changes in the nature reserve of Lake Hornborga between 1979 and 2010. Lowering of the surface of the lake had changed an important water reserve and nutritive salt trap into an overgrown fen and during the 80's a total pioneering restoration, perhaps the most important work of nature conservation of our time, was made. This study claims to answer if the restoration was successful and if its goals were reached. A current vegetation map for 2010 was created and adjusted in ArcGIS and this map was compared with a vegetation map of 1979. Vegetation areas were calculated to facilitate analyses between the maps. Large-scale vegetation changes have occurred between 1979 and 2010. Overgrown fenland with monoculture vegetation has been replaced by a more open landscape with a diversified growth and an open surface of water. The large extension of open surface and the disappearance of rush vegetation are two great surprises of the restoration. Thanks to a large-scale spread of underwater vegetation the aim of furthering birdlife could be reached despite the loss of rush vegetation. A new type of vegetation area has also been created, where open water submerges dead vegetation, one of which is a biotope of dead marsh broadleaf trees, vital to many threatened species.

Full textBackground The Swedish food distribution industry is becoming increasingly concentrated with fewer and larger supermarket chains. This has resulted in power imbalance between supermarkets and their suppliers. Despite the power of the supermarkets, the channel members recognise the need to cooperate with each other. It has become increasingly important for members of the distribution channels for fresh food to cooperate in order to offer the consumers high-quality products. The outcome of this is an elaborated relationship and a higher interaction between channel members. For suppliers that offer local products, it has proved to be of even greater importance with interaction in order to gain trust from the purchasing companies. Consumption of both local and organic fruit and vegetables has increased significantly in the recent years in Sweden. Therefore these product categories have become important to the supermarkets. Based on the lack of research of the Swedish distribution channels for organic and local fruit and vegetables, this study intends to analyse these product categories further. The study has mainly focused on how growers, who offer local or organic fruits and vegetables, can strengthen their position in the market. The study also intends to demonstrate possible differences between suppliers offering local and organic products, to see if one of these categories has a stronger market position than the other. Purpose The purpose of the study is to analyse the relationships and the power balance between members in the distribution channels for organic and local fruits and vegetables, where the focus is to compare these two product categories. Execution To answer the purpose of the study, a total of 11 interviews with five different companies in the distribution channel for fruit and vegetables were conducted. These companies were the retailer and wholesaler ICA, the wholesaler Östgöta Trädgårdshall and three producers (growers). Conclusion The study implies that suppliers for local products may have a greater power position within the studied market than suppliers for organic products. Furthermore, the study confirms that relationships are important between actors in the distribution channel of fruits and vegetables, especially in channels that involve an exchange of local products. Relationships also have an impact on the power balance between the actors thus it appeared that individual suppliers strengthen their power position towards the supermarkets by intimate relationships.
Ullberg, Jörgen. "Dispersal in free-living, marine, benthic nematodes : passive or active processes?" Doctoral thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Zoology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-77.
Full textMeiofauna, and especially marine nematodes are common in sediments around the world. Despite very wide ranging distributions in many nematode species, little is presently known about their dispersal mechanisms shaping these patterns. Rafting, and perhaps ballast water transport has been suggested as viable means for nematode long-range transport. On a much smaller scale other processes have been suggested for their dispersal. They generally include some form of passive suspension into the water column and later on a passive, haphazard settling back towards the bottom.
Small-scale phenomena in nematode dispersal were studied by conducting a series of studies at Askö field station, Trosa Archipelago, Baltic proper. Studied aspects were one case of macrofaunal influence on nematode dispersal rate, using an amphipod, Monoporeia affinis as disturbing agent, and three different studies on mechanisms related to settling. The experiments were conducted both in laboratory and field settings.
The amphipod Monoporeia affinis did not exert any influence on the dispersal rate in the nematodes. The nematode dispersal was only an effect of time, in the aspect that the more time that past, the more nematodes dispersed from their place of origin. The settling experiments revealed that nematodes do have an active component in their settling behaviour, as they were able to exert influence on the spot where they were to settle. They were able to choose settling spot in response to the food quality of the sediment. It also became evident that contrary to common belief, nematodes are able to extend their presence in the water column far beyond the times that would be predicted considering settling velocities and hydrodynamic conditions alone.

Violence and school violence play havoc with South African society. Current methods to curb school violence depend on power, discipline and a penal approach, and prove to be ineffective. The purpose of this research was to investigate alternative approaches to manage school violence and develop an implementation framework for a whole-school approach to it. This research was conducted according to an integrated ecological model. The concepts “violence” and “school violence” were analysed as they are often confused with the concepts “power” and “discipline”. The former pair of concepts are multidimensional and present in all spheres of the integrated ecological model. They include individual violence, group violence and structural violence. School violence manifests in different forms, including bullies and gangs. This research differentiates between controllable school violence – which is within the school community’s sphere of influence – and manageable school violence – which originates outside the school community. The research indicates that the ways in which school violence is currently addressed do not consider damaged relationships because of violence, reconciliation between the perpetrator and the victim, and the needs of the victim. In addition, they do not contribute to the management of structural school violence. Restorative education is a recent approach based on restorative justice and includes proactive activities. Because it is value-driven and grounded on relationships, dialogue, restoration and reconciliation, it can be of great use in the fight against school violence. Restorative education includes both proactive and reactive methods such as victim-offender mediation and group discussions. It focuses on a value-driven school community rather than infringements. However, restorative education has certain deficiencies. This research indicates that they can be made good thanks to Freire’s approach to education. Freire’s approach to education comprise a number of key elements, which can be divided into five groups, viz his views on power and empowerment; ethical-religious elements; consciousness and action; dialogue; educational practice; and education and the community. The research indicates that these elements can compensate for the deficiencies in restorative education. Freire’s approach and a number of connected approaches such as education for social justice, critical pedagogy and the doctrines of Mohlomi, can be combined in an integrated approach to education, referred to as integrated healing education. In the penultimate part of the research, the principles of integrated healing education are utilised to develop a practice-orientated implementation framework. The framework is discussed in two sections: the fields of implementation, viz the learned and lived curricula, and the implementation process through action research. The research concludes with a summary, limitations of the study, and recommendations.
