Full textThe carbon- and ecological footprint due to human activities has in later years gained more attention. In the Swedish media however the water footprint is not as commonly heard of. The definition of a water footprint is the amount of water consumed within the different steps of production of goods and services, the embedded water in the final product or service. There are different methods to calculate the water consumption and water footprint in production in order to measure environmental impact from a water perspective. During the early 21st century Hoekstra and Hung (2002) introduced the concept of water footprint and in 2010 a global standard was published. This study means to calculate and analyze the water footprint of a conventional and organically produced hamburger, with the aim to quantify and compare the relative importance of different production steps focusing on the beef. To evaluate the ineffective processes and the calculation method as well as critically review data are also part of the purpose. Two specific farms have been examined to achieve site specific data on conventional and organic meat production. Some results from previous official publications have been used to fill in data in order to enable analysis of a complete hamburger. The result shows that the water footprint of the conventional hamburger is approximately half of the organic one, with the same results showing regarding the ground beef. In both cases the water footprint of the vegetables constitutes about 5 % of the total. Calculating the water footprint is a complicated process with many parameters to consider. The selection of data is crucial due to errors in data accumulating in every step of the calculating process. Ever though the method is a simplification of reality we conclude that the results are pointing to the importance of a higher awareness of the environmental impact of meat consumption.

Full textThe Swedish government has decided to support organic agriculture in their effort to fulfill their environmental goals. However, the conversion to a more organic agriculture in Sweden has slowed down the last years. In order to be able to affect the transition in a more efficient way, a better understanding of what influence farmer’s decision to choose either conventional or organic production is needed. Earlier studies have shown the importance of both financial and social factors. One factor that has been given importance is the education background of the farmer where organic farmers in general have been found to be higher educated than conventional farmers. If this is true in Sweden, and in what way education affects the farmers choice of farming method, is however unexplored. This study has been attempting to fill this knowledge gap through a survey of organic and conventional farmers in Sweden and an analysis with support from the diffusion of innovations theory and the theory of planned behavior. The study found no differences in the educational background between the conventional and organic farmers in the survey. However, a minority of the farmers experienced that their education had affected their choice of farming method. Among these, more farmers had experienced this influence as deterrent rather than affirmative on adopting organic farming methods. Reasons behind this influence were mainly identified as negative attitudes towards organic agriculture combined with a lack of knowledge in the education. Such deterrent elements in the education could potentially contribute to an undesired development in the area of agriculture. To support considered decisions among farmers and policy makers, this study therefore suggests future research to investigate the actual scope of such elements and the reasons behind them.

Full textThe aquaponic system includes cultivation of fish and vegetables in a cycle with circulating water. A closed system with circulating water is not possible to certify ecological according to the EU regulations, EG 889/2008. This causes a problem for the aquaponic producer who has a non-toxic production that is not possible to certify. The aim with this study is to find out if there is any alternative environmental values for an aquaponic and how the delivery can be done in the most environmental sustainable way. Results from the survey for consumers and persons in the restaurant branch show that environmental certification and quality are valued high. There is also a high demand for locally produced products. There is a higher demand for ecological fish than vegetables that has a higher demand for local production. Such a production requires that the consumer knows how the production is done since a local produced product does not necessarily mean that it its environmental sustainable. The buying power of the fish is affected more negatively than it is for vegetables if it is not environmental certified according to the consumers. The people in the branch of restaurants do however see local production and certification as equally important. The aquaponic producer has an opportunity to distribute the products locally based on the survey results. Would the producer have a transparent work and further enable environmental sustainability aspects in their business, the transport to the customer becomes an important factor. How the products will be delivered to be the most environmentally sustainable depends on location. The delivery method that provides good opportunities for relationship building between supplier and customer risk to be what leads to the most energy demand. While the delivery method that reduces the contact between the parties in many cases leads to minimum energy consumption. What determines transport energy consumption is the means of transport, how much is transported, the fuel use and the distance. Not all principles of sustainability be met in full regardless of vehicles, but the minimization of impact can be selected.

Full textScania is a part of the Traton Group and is world leading within sustainable transports. The master thesis was performed at the transmission assembly at Scania in Södertälje, where the headquarters for research and development also is located. In Södertälje, production units for chassi, engine, and transmission are located. At Scania's transmission assembly gearboxes and axles are assembled, tested and painted before leaving the area. The project focused on gearbox assembly and the related equipment and processes. Scania's transmission assembly faces several challenges connected to the future and in order to continue their vision of being the leader within sustainable transports, new steps needs to be taken towards a more sustainable production environment. The project aims to look over the production conditions and equipment of the transmission assembly and how these can be improved regarding sustainability. By finding areas with high environmental impact and energy consumption, solutions can be developed and recommendations can be made. If implemented, this would contribute to a reduction in the environmental impact of the transmission assembly. The project began with a theoretical reference frame. The theoretical reference frame included theory and information regarding the project's purpose and the areas of investigation. The theoretical reference frame focused on sustainable development, environmental impact as well as energy and waste. Thereon, a current state analysis was conducted in order to identify the most critical areas of investigation from a sustainability perspective. The most critical areas of investigation consisted of heat and electricity consumption as well as energy recovery of non-hazardous waste. In order to identify relevant solutions to the critical areas, a literature study was conducted. The results from the literature study was analyzed with respect to ecological and economic sustainability. The solutions were compared via a decision matrix to produce a final recommendation. The decision matrix that was used was based on ecological and economic sustainability. In the matrix, the different solutions were compared with regards to carbon dioxide equivalents from an ecological perspective and with regards to the payback time from an economic perspective. The solution that was presented as the final recommendation from an energy perspective was sensible heat storage. The final recommendation in order to reduce the environmental impact from waste was a ''right from me'' system.

Full textThis study deals with meat producers' own opinions and thoughts regarding eco-labels and organic production. Previous studies have mainly dealt with the consumer and their attitude towards certifications and the producers have been put in the background as silent spectators. Now the producers can step out of the periphery and share their thoughts and opinions about why they choose, or choose not to, label their meat. The study is qualitative and the interviews are semi-structured. The producers are all located in northern Sweden and produce lamb, beef or pork. The purpose of the study was to find out how small meat producers experience the certification process and how this process is assessed in relation to having a certified production and further how producers communicate their sustainability commitments in a CSR context if they do not use eco-labels. It turned out that the majority of producers had a generally negative attitude towards the certification process, it was considered too cumbersome and costly; in some cases it was not even possible to certify their production due to the geographical distance. Many producers did not see any potential added value in having a certified production as a CSR tool, but rather communicated their sustainability commitments with the customer directly. The majority of producers had a high sustainability commitment, but did not necessarily communicate this to the outside world, and not with the help of eco-labels. The decision regarding whether or not to certify the production had a great deal to do with the geographical area and the limitations this could entail as well as cost and the general mistrust in possible added value due to the eco-labels. The subject is complex and there are many possible conclusions, but in general it seems that smaller producers do not consider it necessary to label their meat as the consumer to a large extent knows what values and sustainability commitments the farm in question has. They mainly use direct communication to convey their commitments and therefore sees no need for an external branding in the form of certification. The potential benefits do not outweigh the complexity of the process.
