Abstract:
On October 10, 1980, the town of El-Asnam (130,000 inhabitants) and villages within a 50 km radius (229,000 inhabitants) were 80% destroyed by an earthquake of intensity 7.5 on the Richter scale (Figure l). The first unofficial estimates reported 50,000 dead and 100,000 injured. These numbers were probably based on data from the Agadir earthquake of February 29, 1960, when 12,000 out of the 30,000 inhabitants were killed. The official figures now list for the El-Asnam earthquake 2,600 dead and 8,250 injured. That was nevertheless a sufficiently heavy toll to fully justify the volume of relief that came from practically all over the world. The relief of Baden-Wurttenberg was organized by the German Air Rescue Guard of Stuttgart, in collaboration with the German Red Cross in Karlsruhe, as well as with physicians from Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Tubingen. In a very short time the necessary aircraft (Merlin IV/Metro and BAC 1–11) for the transport of material and personnel from the German Headquarters were ready for takeoff.

Abstract:
Abstract During the EI Asnam earthquake of 10 October 1980 (Ms = 7.3), a clear active thrust fault with left-lateral offset was observed. Three trenches have been excavated across this fault in order to determine slip rate and recurrence intervals between large earthquakes, and thus reconstruct its past activity. Exposure I was excavated in the flood area created in 1980 by a pressure ridge across the Cheliff and Fodda Rivers. Six flood deposits (silty-sandy and muddy horizons) alternating with paleosoils appear in this exposure; they are affected by normal faults associated with the main thrust fault. Assuming that every flood deposit results from a tectonic event of magnitude greater than 7, we can correlate previous flood deposits with these events. Exposures II and III display thrust faults displacing different paleosoils. We propose a sequence of reconstructions based on the thickness of the various deposits and the dip-slip of each tectonic event. The Late Holocene slip rate is 0.65 mm/yr for the dip-slip and 0.46 mm/yr for each of the horizontal and the vertical movements. Radiocarbon dates of coseismic movements indicate a rather irregular seismic activity during the past 7000 yr. Two sequences of large earthquakes around 4000 yr B.P. and around the modern age are separated with a period of quiescence. The average Late Holocene recurrence interval of large earthquakes is 1061 yr; however, during the active faulting episodes, the recurrence time varies from approximately 300 to 500 yr.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Geomorphic studies of profiles conducted in 1986 across the El Asnam fault zone, the site of destructive earthquakes in both 1954 and 1980 allow quantitative evaluation of state Quaternary vertical offsets. Cumulative offsets were obtained with 13 profiles across both the main thrust fault and the secondary normal faults. 7 of the scarps levelled display three to five events including the 1980 earthquake and 5 others show cumulative vertical offsets at least eight times greater than that of 1980. On the ether hand 22 profiles conducted across the thrust breaks of the October 10, 1980 earthquake (M=7. 3) give more accurate values of co-seismic vertical displacements than those previously measured and confirm the existence of three segments A, B, and c along the strike of the fault. Dating of events identified on profiles, for which trench studies nearby have been conducted, yields the following results : in the last 1030 ±135 years, which is a cluster period of large seismic events, we obtain two uplift rates of 2. 42 mm. Y⁻¹ and 0. 97 mm. Y⁻¹respectively along the fault, as well as a recurrence interval of 315 years. For a longer time span (late Holocene), we obtain average minimum and maximum uplift rates of 0. 6 mm. Y⁻¹ and 1. 52 mm. Y⁻¹ respectively, and a recurrence interval of 710 years. An uplifted terrace located at the junction between segments A and B and dated approximately at 100,000 years implies an uplift rate of 0. 5 ±0. 05 mm. Y⁻¹ which is comparable to the minimum late Holocene uplift rate. The slip rate variability thus appears to depend not only on the uneven temporal distribution of large earthquakes (with M>7), but also on the variations in the amplitude of vertical displacements along different segments of the fault. Hence, the El Asnam thrust behavior is variable and episodic along strike, of the fault and is characterized by clusters of large events separated by longer periods of dormancy

Abstract:
This thesis studies the Brahmans of the Kamakhya temple complex; and in particular the social, economic and political issues agitating the priestly community. My interest concerns all Brahmans active at the temple complex. l analyze the logic that organizes and hierarchizes the wide range of activities restricted to Brahmans; the financial aspect of these activities; and the way Brahmans conceptualize and legitimize their activities and standing. The Brahmans are basically involved in two sets of activities: those connected to the public worship and those connected to their relations with pilgrims and the private worship (in dealing with pilgrims, the rights—holder Brahmans delegate certain activities to the Brahmans from outside the Nilachal). Considering both the spheres of activity allowed me to analyze the relative significance of the two spheres at the level of concepts and at that of the practices undertaken by the Brahmans. The chapters of this thesis will show that a significant gap can be detected between the two levels. The public worship is the only activity which (in theory) should be undertaken every day and is understood to be the essential activity of the temple complex. On the 0ther hand, at present the temple complex receives thousands of pilgrims every day; as will be shown, that has a profound impact on the internal organization and agency of the Brahman community. One 0f the main tasks of this thesis will be to find 0ut the specific ways in which the flow of pilgrims contributes to shaping new models of relationships between the Brahmans of the Kamakhya temple complex, to orientating the Brahmans' choices and actions, and to creating significant economic differences among the Brahmans. The last part of the thesis explores the role of the Brahmans in the administration of the temple complex. Through the analyse of a seventeen—year—old dispute l explore the way different actors answer the question whether the political sphere should be informed by ritual ranking among Brahmans and between Brahmans and non—Brahmans or not

The traditional Portuguese buildings often had wooden trusses as primary foundation in their primary coverage. With the growing interest in the rehabilitation of old buildings, the study of traditional wooden trusses becomes highly important. This thesis aims to provide ways to assess the state of degradation and bearing capacity of wooden trusses, which may prove useful in the rehabilitation of buildings. As the subject of study has been given access to two traditional wooden trusses, which were evaluated using non-destructive analysis methods. A numeric model of the trusses has been created in order to study their structural behavior. Based on this model two possible reinforcement techniques to apply in wooden trusses were studied, contributing this way for a greater range of studies that support the conservation and rehabilitation of elderly roofs.

Abstract:
In the first section of this dissertation, Goddess Kāmākhyā, who has been committed to a passionate relationship with her husband, is described through rituals observed in the temple dedicated to her near Guwahati, in Assam. Sanskrit and Assamese texts are cited to add more depth to the ethnographic data. In the second section, the temple's history and sociology over the ages are explored, highlighting the privileged relationships with kingship maintained, from the 17th century onwards, by gurus involved in the cult of the goddess. In the third section, starting from Kāmākhyā's marriage rituals performed every year in the temple, we further examine the links between kinship and sexuality. Kāmākhyā's legend and cult are the basis of sex education and of a knowledge of eroticism associating medicinal plants with magic, essential to the fabrication of the conjugal couple

Abstract:
At the present dissertation, it has been defined modular trusses of 35 m which are a shoring system of towers and trusses to the concreting of viaducts. The sizing of trusses takes into account the phase of lifting and placing them in position for the scaffolding and the concreting phase. It has been made an approach of building methods used on bridges according with different conditions. The same way, it has been related the construction methods with shoring systems. The modeling of trusses is made in SAP 2000, allowing the visualization of their stresses during elevation and concreting in order to define sections and connections between those elements. This study makes possible to choose trusses that perform the desired functions of the deck viaducts up to 35 m span. Allows the choice between solutions to strengthen the existing trusses or new trusses solutions.

Abstract:
In 2020, WSSCC’s India Support Unit (now UNOPS) piloted a new participatory approach called Community Leave No One Behind (CLNOB) to support the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II. The pilot took place in five districts in India (Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, Ranchi in Jharkhand, Kamrup in Assam, South 24 Paragnas in West Bengal and Purnea in Bihar). A Prerak (facilitator) was appointed in each district to support this process and work within villages at community level. The Sanitation Learning Hub supported an accompanying learning component of the pilot, facilitating learning sessions between the preraks and the development of a Handbook based on the experience. This learning brief outlines the purpose of CLNOB, the actions generated by the pilot and our reflections of the CLNOB approach. The CLNOB Handbook, a handbook on Community Leave No One Behind, accompanies this Learning Brief. CLNOB was designed to ensure a participatory method to enable sustained access to safely managed sanitation facilities for people who have been ‘left behind’ or left out of the first phase of India’s national sanitation campaign.
