Abstract:
On October 10, 1980, the town of El-Asnam (130,000 inhabitants) and villages within a 50 km radius (229,000 inhabitants) were 80% destroyed by an earthquake of intensity 7.5 on the Richter scale (Figure l). The first unofficial estimates reported 50,000 dead and 100,000 injured. These numbers were probably based on data from the Agadir earthquake of February 29, 1960, when 12,000 out of the 30,000 inhabitants were killed. The official figures now list for the El-Asnam earthquake 2,600 dead and 8,250 injured. That was nevertheless a sufficiently heavy toll to fully justify the volume of relief that came from practically all over the world. The relief of Baden-Wurttenberg was organized by the German Air Rescue Guard of Stuttgart, in collaboration with the German Red Cross in Karlsruhe, as well as with physicians from Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Tubingen. In a very short time the necessary aircraft (Merlin IV/Metro and BAC 1–11) for the transport of material and personnel from the German Headquarters were ready for takeoff.

Abstract:
Abstract During the EI Asnam earthquake of 10 October 1980 (Ms = 7.3), a clear active thrust fault with left-lateral offset was observed. Three trenches have been excavated across this fault in order to determine slip rate and recurrence intervals between large earthquakes, and thus reconstruct its past activity. Exposure I was excavated in the flood area created in 1980 by a pressure ridge across the Cheliff and Fodda Rivers. Six flood deposits (silty-sandy and muddy horizons) alternating with paleosoils appear in this exposure; they are affected by normal faults associated with the main thrust fault. Assuming that every flood deposit results from a tectonic event of magnitude greater than 7, we can correlate previous flood deposits with these events. Exposures II and III display thrust faults displacing different paleosoils. We propose a sequence of reconstructions based on the thickness of the various deposits and the dip-slip of each tectonic event. The Late Holocene slip rate is 0.65 mm/yr for the dip-slip and 0.46 mm/yr for each of the horizontal and the vertical movements. Radiocarbon dates of coseismic movements indicate a rather irregular seismic activity during the past 7000 yr. Two sequences of large earthquakes around 4000 yr B.P. and around the modern age are separated with a period of quiescence. The average Late Holocene recurrence interval of large earthquakes is 1061 yr; however, during the active faulting episodes, the recurrence time varies from approximately 300 to 500 yr.

Abstract:
In the field of seismic risk prevention in Algeria, the earthquake of El Asnam, 10/10/1980 is the triggering event and that of Zemmouri 21/05/2003 the accelerating element of the policy already in place. These two major events have been rich in information, as they are among the most studied internationally. The approaches and the development of methods for seismic risk reduction are based largely on feedback. The fundamental goal of seismic risk reduction is to avoid loss of life, which is mainly due to the partial or total collapse of structures. Exploiting lessons learned from past earthquakes is reflected in code requirements for new projects and approaches to vulnerability estimation for existing structures. In this paper, we give a description of the characteristics of the two events. The analysis of pathologies observed and the impact on the Algerian seismic code is discussed.

Abstract:
The 21 May 2003 Zemmouri earthquake ( Mw=6.8), which killed 2,278 people, injured 11,450, made 250,000 homeless, and destroyed or seriously damaged 6,000 buildings and 20,800 housing units, is the most significant earthquake to affect Algeria since the 1980 El Asnam earthquake ( Ms=7.3). This paper presents the report of the macroseismic survey conducted by the Centre of Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Geophysics (CRAAG, Algeria) immediately after the earthquake. The collected data set has led to a comprehensive evaluation of damage and estimation of intensity at about 600 sites, a number never reached in previous earthquake damage surveys. The produced isoseismal map portrays the spatial distribution of intensities from III to X EMS. A map highlighting the damage distribution, where various geological and hydrological phenomena are reported, is also presented. The extent of the socioeconomic impact of this event confirmed that Algerian buildings are highly vulnerable to the recurrence of destructive earthquakes.

Abstract:
The city of Oued-Fodda is located in north-central Algeria on the margins of the Middle-Cheliff Basin. This region has suffered several destructive earthquakes. The strongest was the 1980 El-Asnam earthquake (Ms7.3), whose causative fault was located about 1 km north of the city of Oued-Fodda. Therefore, a good knowledge of the soil characteristics in this city may allow a better evaluation of the seismic risk and help to minimize damages in the future. With this objective, a detailed microzonation study of Oued-Fodda has been carried out in this study. For that, the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method has been applied on 102 sites along the city, estimating the soil fundamental frequencies and their corresponding amplitudes. Besides, the Rayleigh wave ellipticity inversion has been accomplished in order to estimate the corresponding Vs profiles and provide two cross-sections of the geology under the city. In the central part of the city, high-frequency peaks are observed, between 12.5 and 15 Hz, which correspond to impedance contrasts at shallow depth (<20 m). In the surrounding plain, two clear peaks are identified in the ranges 1.8–3.5 Hz (fundamental frequencies) and 6.5–15 Hz (secondary peaks).

Abstract:
We must be prepared for a survivorship of about 600 to 700 injured passengers in case of an accident involving two jumbo jets as these planes are able to absorb more impact forces than earlier types, and 40%-50% of the passengers may survive.A triage post, an anteroom for resuscitation and anesthesia, and an operating room with 3 tables must be installed within the airport. Mobile operation units are necessary in addition for urgent surgical care on the spot. The optimum time of the operational readiness is approximately half an hour, if “on the spot surgical care” is to be effective. At the triage post several tables are available, each with an experienced surgeon for the rapid medical examination. The time of examination and triage for each victim of the earthquake disaster in El Asnam was three minutes. In an airport disaster, about 10% of survivors might belong to the first category of triage, i.e., have life-threatening injuries. They will require resuscitation and urgent surgical care. Twenty percent might be seriously wounded passengers of the second category, who should be conveyed to hospital as soon as possible. Seventy percent might have minor injuries of the third category and can wait for care and transportation. Many victims may require neurosurgical operations, but this should be carried out by trained experts and not at the airport. Open depressed skull fractures should be treated at the airport by shaving the scalp, irrigating the wound, applying a sterile dressing and instituting antibiotic therapy. Foreign bodies should be left in place until definitive surgery can be undertaken.

Abstract:
The research about “Incubation of titonia for organic acid production in rice field” has been conducted in soil laboratory Agriculture Collage Andalas University Padang, since January to August 2005. The objective of this research was to determine the best method of using titonia to produce organic acids in rice field. The research had 2 factors, 3 series of titonia application and 5 levels of titonia dossages with 3 replications. The series are: A1 = Titonia was mixed with soil and then, the soil was directly flooded; A2 = Titonia was mixed with soil and then, let them stay on soil surface for 3 weeks before being flooded; A3 = Titonia was mixed with soil and then, the soil was moistened until field capacity for 3 weeks before being flooded. The second factor was titonia dossages (0,000; 1,250; 2,500; 3,750; 5,000 g dry weight of titonia per kg soil). The result showed that organic acids of the soil had been changed as a consequence of titonia application and the incubation with soil. The highest organic acid production was found at combination of titonia incubation with soil at field capacity for 3 weeks, that was malat acid (184-489 mgl-1). The others detected were citrate, tartarate, malate, and benzoat acids, butt fenolate acids was not detected. Keywords: incubation, organic acids, rice field, titonia.
