Abstract:
Elachista heteroplaca Meyrick, Ptilodoxa lorigera Meyrick and Platyphyllis leucosyrma Meyrick are redescribed. Elachista albrechti sp. n. (Nepal) and Elachista planicara sp. n. (Kuriles) are described. E. heteroplaca, P. lorigera, E. albrechti and E. planicara are assigned to a species group related to the Elachista (Cosmiotes) freyerella group. Platyphyllis leucosyrma is placed in the Elachista tetragonella group. The genera Ptilodoxa and Platyphyllis Meyrick are considered to be synonyms of Elachista Treitschke (syn. n.). A lectotype is designated for E. heteroplaca.

Coi Gene as a Molecular Marker of Elachista Species (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae: Elachistinae) from Different Lithuanian Populations We compared COI DNA sequences of three Elachista species occurring in Lithuania: Elachista maculicerusella, E. argentella, and E. pollinariella (Gelechioidea: Elachistidae: Elachistinae). Also, intraspecific differences in COI DNA between moth populations were tested. A 705 bp fragment of the 3'-end of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) was used. This mtDNA fragment was significantly different between all studied species. Intraspecific differences were detected only for E. maculicerusella from different Lithuanian populations. Our results support using the COI gene for identification of Elachista species and as a tool for exploring intraspecific differences between populations.

Abstract:
The morphology of larva and pupa, as well as larval mines of Elachista zonulae (Sruoga, 1992) are described and illustrated for the first time. Carex firma Host is reported as a new host plant ofthe species; previously only Carex sempervirens Vill. was known to be host plant of E. zonulae. Some information on life history of this elachistid moth is also provided. The mature larva is 4.5—5.5 mm long. Pupation takes place usually at base of leaf blade of the food plant. The species is univoltine and hibernates as young larva.

Abstract:
Larvae of the Holarctic marine chironomid, Halocladius variabilis (Staeger), have strong fidelity to the tuft-forming brown alga, Elachista fucicola (Velley) Areschoug, an abundant epiphyte on intertidal fucoids of the North Atlantic. We show that larvae are sufficiently motile to select an algal host in a Petri dish within 3–4 cm, and that larvae show differential behaviour with respect to host selection in the presence or absence of a predator. In the absence of predators 53% of larvae found an algal host within 1 hour; however, after 24 hours, there was no significant difference in host selection. When an isopod predator (Idotea sp.) was present, more larvae found a host within 1 hour (81%) and Elachista was chosen over three of the four other hosts. Furthermore, when larvae were present in Elachista, predator (Carcinus maenus) success was significantly reduced relative to two other algal hosts. The adaptive significance of Elachista as a refuge from predation was confirmed by experiments demonstrating that larval growth with other algal hosts was greater than with Elachista. These experiments suggest that microhabitat selection by larvae of H. variabilis reveals important tradeoffs for growth and predator avoidance.

Abstract:
The chosen group - Elachistidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera) was researched only with the help of traditional research methods and the molecular DNA method was never applied. Model species Elachista argentella, E. maculicerusella and E. pollinariella. Selected populations were located in a different distance from each other. Elachista argentella,. E. maculicerusella and E. pollinariella were examined using traditional entomological methods such as identifying of species, making of morphological preparations, documenting of important for taxonomy morphological structures. DNA extraction method was applied for the above mentioned Elachista species. There were 4 specific and 2 random primers chosen for the molecular research. Analysis of Elachista argentell,. E. maculicerusella and E. pollinariella was carried out using oligonucleotide pair which amplifies mitochondrial DNA sequences of the COI gene. The polymorphism of sequenced mtDNA segments of the COI gene in three Elachista genus species was assessed on species and population level.
