Abstract:
This paper is a formal demonstration of cognation between Elamite, a major language of the ancient Near East, and Brahui, a language of Balochistan, spoken primarily in Pakistan but also in Iran and Afghanistan. It is identifying Brahui as Modern Colloquial Eastern Elamite. Almost exactly two millennia have elapsed between the last recording of Elamite and the first recorded example of Brahui. While closely related, Brahui is not a descendant of classical Elamite. Rather, it is descended from an unattested eastern branch of Elamite. Abstract Linear Elamite writing was used in southern Iran in the late 3rd/early 2nd millennium BCE (ca. 2300–1880 BCE). First discovered during the French excavations at Susa from 1903 onwards, it has so far resisted decipherment. The publication of eight inscribed silver beakers in 2018 provided the materials and the starting point for a new attempt; its results are presented in this paper. A full description and analysis of Linear Elamite of writing, employed for recording the Elamite language, is given here for the first time, together with a discussion of Elamite phonology and the biscript

As one of the most important archaeological sites in Iran and also because of its holiness, Naqš-e Rostam was always being paid attention through historic periods. The earliest remain of the site goes back to Elamite period while many more reliefs were then added in the Achaemenian and Sasanian periods. Except for the Elamite relief which later vanished as Bahram II relief was made over it in the Sasanian period, other reliefs of Naqš-e Rostam date to Sasanian period. The Neo-Elamite period (ca. 1000-520 BCE), spanning the centuries from the end of the Middle Elamite Shutrukid dynasty to the rise of the Persian Empire, long remained one of the most poorly known intervals in Elam’s history. It was only in the early 1980s with the delineation of a Neo-Elamite ceramic sequence at Susa by French archaeologist Pierre de Miroschedji that archaeological material of this period could be more reliably identified and studied. In subsequent decades, scholars have gradually proceeded to unveil a rich picture of first millennium Elam and its material culture. One elemen

This horizon spans from the end of the fourth millennium and the beginning of the third millennium BCE (i.e. 3100-2700 B.C.E.) and marks the beginning of a period of widespread social and political administrative complexity on the Iranian Plateau. Central to this thesis are a small number of unique bronze “bathtub” coffins found in 8th–6th century B.C.E. Babylonian, Assyrian and Elamite burial contexts. These fascinating burial containers have not previously been subject to an in-depth analysis, but rather have been treated by archaeologists as little more than convenient receptacles for a body and numerous precious objects deemed more worthy of scholarly interest. This thesis takes the opportunity to narrow this gap in scholarship, by firstly drawing together the available evidence for the excavated coffins, investigating the method an

The current study presents the results of archaeological survey in the Mamasani district of south-western Iran, in the southern Zagros Mountains. The two main valleys of the survey area, the Dasht-e Rostam-e Yek and Dasht-e Rostam-e Do are situated on a major route through the mountains that connects the archaeologically well known sites of Tal-e Malyan (Anshan) and Persepolis in highland Fars with Susa and the large, alluvial plains of lowland Khuzestan and beyond. The survey area forms a small, geographically cohesive unit, which was investigated for evidence of long term settlement patterns
