Abstract:
Breker layers in a pneumatic tire are an important part in the tire construction. These layers have a metal cord resulting in substantial bending stiffness. When homogenizing such layers, a “shave” method is applied to the breaker layer. This results in a thinner layer having adequate stiffness in both tension and bending. In this work, a phenomenological approach is used to obtain the effective properties of a homogeneous anisotropic hyper elastic material of an equivalent layer. Two models utilize transverse isotropic or orthotropic potential used to describe the homogenized properties. Comp

Abstract:
The umbilical cord is a complex and fascinating structure that connects the fetus to the placenta and encases the umbilical vessels. The response of its tissues to mechanical loading due to fetal movements and uterine contractions is not well understood. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the main components of the human umbilical cord. Fresh umbilical cord specimens were collected from neonates born at term of the gestation and submitted to compliance tests. Furthermore, uniaxial tensile and stress‐relaxation tests were performed on samples of umbilical ve

Our work is motivated by ideas about the pathogenesis of syringomyelia. This is a serious disease characterized by the appearance of longitudinal cavities within the spinal cord. Its causes are unknown, but pressure propagation is probably implicated. We have developed an inviscid theory for the propagation of pressure waves in co-axial, fluid-filled, elastic tubes. This is intended as a simple model of the intraspinal cerebrospinal-fluid system. Our approach is based on the classic theory for the propagation of longitudinal waves in single, fluid-filled, elastic tubes. We show that for small-

We report on the buckling morphologies and interfacial properties of silicon nitride films deposited on float glass substrates. The coexistence of straight-sided and telephone cord buckles can be observed in the silicon nitride films after annealing at a high temperature. The straight-sided structure is metastable and can spontaneously evolve into the telephone cord structure accompanied by the increase in the buckle width and height. The geometric parameters of various buckling structures (including the straight blister, telephone cord and their transition state) have been measured by optical

Abstract Fatigue failure mechanisms and their dependence on cyclic loading frequency were assessed in the case of a nylon fiber-reinforced elastomer matrix composite representing the actual carcass of bias aircraft tires. Under uniaxial tension, the angle-plied composite specimens were subjected to a considerably large interply shear strain before failure. The composite specimens exhibited infinite fatigue life when stress amplitude was below a threshold level, i.e., fatigue endurance limit. Under cyclic stresses exceeding the endurance limit, localized damage in the form of fiber-matrix debon
