We have developed a curved finite element for a cylindrical thick shell based on the thick shell equations established in 1999 by Nzengwa and Tagne (N-T). The displacement field of the shell is interpolated from nodal displacements only and strains assumption. Numerical results on a cylindrical thin shell are compared with those of other well-known benchmarks with satisfaction. Convergence is rapidly obtained with very few elements. A scaling was processed on the cylindrical thin shell by increasing the ratioχ=h/2R(half the thickness over the smallest radius in absolute value) and comparing re

The paper deals with an elastic-plastic analysis of a cantilever cylindrical shell loaded at its free end by a concentrated radial force. The problem is solved by means of the so-called “geometric elements” which conform to the deformation pattern of the shell. The results obtained define the large deformation behavior and the motion of plastic zones over the surface of the shell. A comparison with a standard finite element solution is made, and the advantages of the geometric approach are shown.

Abstract:
In the current study, the effect of spud-can-soil interaction modeling as well as wave load modeling and sea-state on the reliability index of a three-leg North-sea drilling type jack-up platform is studied. The platform has operated in depths of 95–105m and its three main legs modeled as pipe elements and the main deck is also modeled using general beam and also shell/plate elements. The spud-can foundation is modeled using elasto-plastic, hyper-elastic springs as well as spud-model of usfos using a general non-associative plasticity model. The wave-in-deck load is considered using API-RP2A [
