Abstract:
Addressing unique effects of both addiction and analgesia on older adults, this chapter defines the geriatric population and proceeds to discuss the recognition of addiction or substance misuse in it. There is little argument that the elderly have special diagnostic concerns and management needs that are imposed upon those of younger adults. The concept of the pain signature is introduced as a measure of the functions with which the individual’s pain interferes. Four instruments serving as diagnostic aids are included in tabular format: the pain signature elements; a list of recommended patien

Abstract:
Sedative-hypnotic-use disorder is a serious problem in the elderly and is a growing concern in the United States. The American Geriatrics Society’s “Choosing Wisely” initiative cautions against the use of any benzodiazepines or other sedative-hypnotics as initial treatment in older adults, yet benzodiazepines are the most frequently prescribed drugs in the elderly for both insomnia and anxiety. Other classes of medication (e.g., serotoninergic antidepressants) may be substituted for benzodiazepines based on diagnosis. With advancing age, the elderly are more sensitive to the potential side eff

Abstract:
As older adults live longer, they experience a concomitant increase in chronic illness, which may be associated with a more frequent need for health care and intermittent or progressive functional decline. There is an increased need for regular health care monitoring as well as treatment and coordination of care among multiple providers and across settings to prevent, delay, or minimize decline in health and quality of life. Interprofessional collaboration is critical for safe coordination of care, reduction of duplication in services, and cost containment. Health care professionals who serve

Abstract:
Elder abuse and neglect are serious problems affecting tens of thousands of older adults each year. In this chapter, we discuss elder abuse in its various forms (including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, financial maltreatment, and neglect) and provide recommendations for screening and prevention relevant to health-care providers working with geriatric populations. We further highlight clinical and contextual issues pertinent to screening for elder abuse and to its prevention, followed by a review of information regarding emergency management and care in cases of suspected or confirmed

Abstract:
Palliative care in the older person occurs in the context of chronic disease and multimorbidity. Coexisting conditions include musculoskeletal, psychiatric, cognitive, and chronic pain-related problems, each associated with substantive symptomatology and disability. Most crucial is to avoid management within disease ‘silos’ and the risks associated with polypharmacy, which both contribute to adverse outcomes. The complexity of older people’s care demands the formation of a collaborative partnership between primary care, geriatric, and palliative care services, together with other health-care p
