Abstract:
The number of people choosing to vote or abstain varies over elections and across countries. The reasons why individuals may choose to vote in one election but not the next are not completely known. Election context seems to play a role but there is not a clear set of contextual variables that political scientists employ that capture why turnout - or individual decisions to vote - fluctuates from one election to the next. There remains a need fill this literature gap. This dissertation attempts to move our understanding of turnout variation forward. It does so by analysing three election

This essay examines to what extent institutional factors can explain the variation among EU-countries regarding the differences between their turnout in the 2014 European election and their latest national parliamentary elections. On different levels, the countries of the European Union tend to have smaller turnouts in the European elections than in their national parliamentary election. Can separate formal political institutions on a system level among member countries of the European Union explain the variation of turnout differences in elections to the European parliament and national gener

Abstract:
Compared to most Western democracies, voter turnout in the United States is consistently lower. Individuals from disadvantaged groups such as the poor are also less likely to vote than more affluent citizens. To counteract these trends, American state governments since the 1970s have adopted election reform laws (early voting, no-excuse absentee or mail voting, and Same Day Registration [SDR] voting) to make voting easier for the citizen. Paradoxically, most research on election reform laws has found that these laws have a minimal effect on turnout, and do not reduce disparities between more a

Abstract:
This paper attempts to shed light into the realm of school boards, a frequently overlooked topic in political science literature. This study examines the relationship between a school board electoral structure and voter turnout levels. In particular, the author hypothesizes that ward-based elections due to their inherent smallness have higher voter turnout levels than at-large elections. In crafting such a relationship a mixed-method approach was used combining elements found in case studies with an intervention analysis. The paper describes voter turnout levels from 1989 to 2007 for a single,

Abstract:
Voting in an election is the most basic and fundamental form of political participation in a democracy. Citizens are given the opportunity to elect legislators that take political decisions on their behalf. As immigration is increasing globally, many immigrants find themselves with this opportunity for the very first time immigrating from authoritarian regimes. Are immigrants from authoritarian regime able to adapt to their new political setting, or is there an observable difference in voter turnout based on the regime-type of the immigrant’s native country?
