Full textObjective. To examine the relevance of adopting the multi-criterion approach as a planning tool when water is reused. Methods. It consisted of the following stages: (1) a bibliographical survey; (2) description of the Federal District (area under study); (3) determining the areas liable to irrigation with reused water by overlaying thematic maps: (4) working with decision makers; (5) applying the ELECTRE III Method; (6) presenting and discussing results; (7) assessing the work undertaken. Results: (1)The quality of the sewage treated in all the wastewater treatment plants (WTPs) was found to be unsuitable for unrestricted irrigation. It was suggested that it be reused in irrigating the Federal District´s major crops: maize, soy bean, coffee and wheat; (2) six alternatives, with regard to wastewater treatment plants, were identified for undertaking water reuse in the Federal District: Brazlândia, Samambaia/Melchior, Gama, Sul, Planaltina and São Sebastião; (3) the six alternatives are capable of irrigating all public flower beds, as well as 4,268 hectares of farmland - representing 38% of the Federal District´s irrigated lands under major crop cultivation; (4) after applying the ELECTRE III Method, the most advantageous alternatives were those related to Sul and Samambaia/Melchior wastewater treatment plants. Conclusions: (1) water reuse should be considered in water resources management in the Federal District; (2) the multi-criterion approach proved to be a suitable tool when planning water reuse; (3) the ELECTRE III Method was a suitable solution to the problem and met the requirements of the decision makers.

Full textAmazon is the largest existing rainforest in the world and offers several essential ecosystem services. In Brazil, Amazon watersheds are sources of the greatest potential of electric power supply that dam complexes have not used yet. In this context, the construction of Belo Monte Dam Complex shall be highlighted as an iconic project in Brazil, although marked by several conflicts due to its generation of permanent diversified environmental impacts in Amazonian biodiversity. This way, the general objective of this research was to analyze the application of two MCDA methods to demonstrate to what extent those methods may be used to analyze the referred decision-making process. The methods used were ELECTRE III, a non-compensatory method; and a group approach Game Theory-based method that used Nash Equilibrium on the alternatives of the construction of Belo Monte Dam Complex. Therefore, the main problems involved in the construction of the facility were identified. Also, two decision matrixes were created, with its alternatives and criteria, and applied to both MCDA methods. It was observed that the alternative concerning the 516 km2 reservoir area, which was the real one adopted in the construction of the referred facility, was considered the most appropriate alternative in group approach as well as in the opinion of most players in the individual approaches for both methods. The alternative concerning flows close to the river\'s natural ones, which was not adopted on the construction of Belo Monte Dam Complex, was identified as the most appropriate alternative on group approach as well as in the opinion of all players in individual approach. The contributions provided by this study are: the provision of the modelling of Belo Monte Dam Complex problem; the demonstration that MCDA methods may consist in a primarily step in discussions concerning complex problems; the provision of help for managers on decision-making process who often underlie their fostering decision mechanisms in technical and specific documents; and the allowance of a greater formal participation of several decision makers in the decision-making processes.

Along with the rapid development of mobile communications, smart phones have become the most popular tool as a means to communicate. Thus, new smart phones have been constantly developed and introduced to cater to the needs of different groups of costumers with ever improved and innovative applications. The aim has been to create a device that the customer would find useful and indispensable in every day life. With the striking growth in the numbers of mobile phones and their users year by year, it has become increasingly vital for the customer to know how to select the right smart phone among a wide variety of choices. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a smartphone selection procedure for the prospective users, which is achieved by the improved ELECTRE III method with the incorporation of Kano. In the essay, it further uses and scrutinizes the results of the questionnaires designed by the experts. With the application of the initial ELECTRE III and the improved ELECTRE III methods, we can see a great number of differences in the same results of the surveys. In conclusion, it is evident that the improved ELECTRE III method reflects more clearly the outranking relations among each alternative for the prospective users.

Full textAims of this study is to develop a residential customers' lighting profile ANFIS-based model. This model is expected to address lighting load usage estimation in relation to the dynamic occupancy presence in a residential dwelling, which will take into account the climatic condition (natural lighting) of such an environment (e.g. South Africa) and its income. The objectives are as follows: 1. Develop an ANFIS-based residential lighting load profile model for middle income, low income and high-income earners. 2. Error reduction in residential lighting demand profile model. Performance evaluation and validation of the model using correlation and trend analysis, regression model, South Africa power utility application lighting program, non-weighted approach and comparison with other research studies (methodology).3. Reduction in / or elimination of repeated models for occupant presence and assumptions that residences are occupied at certain periods. 4. Derive meaning from complexities (behavioural trends) associated with lighting usage and extract patterns in such circumstances.

Full textStudies the symmetrical six phase induction machine structure, to determine different devices this machine can adapt to and to model these devices mathematically. Laboratory experiments are to be conducted and used to verify theoretical findings. The research objectives are:to determine what devices the symmetrical structure can adapt to ; to develop a mathematical model of the machine operating as different devices and to determine the equivalent circuit of the specific mode of operation ; to investigate both steady state and dynamic behaviour of the machine operating as different devices using Matlab / Simulink simulation software package ; to use a laboratory prototype of the "3 & 6" machine to validate theoretical findings.

Full textDevelopes a wheelchair motion platform whereby its user may be introduced into a simulated world. This simulated world is then required to be closely related to real world spaces that will be encountered by a disabled person using a wheelchair as a mobility aid. The wheelchair to be accommodated in the simulation environment may have multiple mechanical construct possibilities. The wheelchair used on the simulation platform needs to be driven by a combination of two wheels, as is generally found on manual and electric wheelchairs. The final objective was to design the simulation as closely as possible to the real world in order to use the VS-1 motion platform for architectural evaluations, possible training and general research in the field of simulators used in an enabled environment.
