Abstract:
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe self-reported problems among guitarists and to examine differences associated with type of guitar played. Data for the study were extracted from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) data set. Subjects for the present study (n = 520) were included if they identified acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass or banjo as their primary instrument. Prevalences for musculoskeletal problems were determined for the total group, by guitar-specific groups, and by gender. Prevalences for nonmusculoskeletal, overall health problems were established for the whole guitar group and by instrument. Of the total subjects, 81% reported one or more musculoskeletal problems. The acoustic guitar group reported the highest prevalence (83%), followed by the banjo (78%), electric bass (77%), and electric guitar groups (74%). The highest site-specific prevalences for the whole group were the left fingers (32.9%), left wrist (29.8%), and left hand (24.7%). Regarding nonmusculoskeletal problems, 66% of the total group perceived stress due to work environment as a moderate to high problem. The total group reported mostly problems with fatigue, depression, headache, and eye strain. The overall findings of the study show that musculoskeletal problems as well as stress-related health problems are a major concern for the guitar community.

Abstract:
Audio-to-MIDI conversion can be used to allow digital musical control through an analog instrument. Audio-to-MIDI converters rely on fundamental frequency estimators that are usually restricted to a minimum delay of two fundamental periods. This delay is perceptible for the case of bass notes. In this dissertation, we propose a low-latency fundamental frequency estimation method that relies on specific characteristics of the electric bass guitar. By means of physical modeling and signal acquisition, we show that the assumptions of this method are based on the generalization of all electric basses. We evaluated our method in a dataset with musical notes played by diverse bassists. Results show that our method outperforms the Yin method in low-latency settings, which indicates its suitability for low-latency audio-to-MIDI conversion of the electric bass sound.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the diffusion of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the world and evaluates the vehicle charging stations based on the European Union (EU) scenario. Initially, the global BEV sales data from 2005 to 2018 are fitted with the two most frequently used econometric logistics and Bass diffusion models. Further, the study identifies the different stage adopters, forecasts the consumption of BEVs, and examines the velocity and acceleration of BEV diffusion. Finally, future charging stations are examined to meet the BEV sales demand. Results suggest that the adoption of BEVs demonstrates a better fit on the Bass model where the global BEV market is estimated to grow from 5,3 millions in 2019 to near 40 millions units by 2030, and with the reference of the EU countries’ adoption scenario, the global charging stations will be increased from near 2 millions in 2019 to near 10 millions units by 2030.

Abstract:
This article explores Jaco Pastorius’s efforts to legitimize himself as a jazz electric bassist. Even though the instrument had existed at the margins of jazz for decades, by the 1970s it was overwhelmingly associated with rock and funk music and therefore carried with it the stigmatized connotations of outsider status. Building on the work of Bill Milkowski, Kevin Fellezs, Lawrence Wayte, and Peter Dowdall, I situate Pastorius’s career within the broader context of 1970s jazz fusion. I then analyze how he deliberately used his public persona, his virtuosic technical abilities, the atypical timbre of his fretless electric bass, and his work as a composer and bandleader to vie for acceptance within the jazz tradition. As I argue, Pastorius specifically attempted to establish his jazz credibility through his first two solo albums, initially by disassociating himself from his own instrument, and then by eventually abandoning the musical style that had made him famous. Ultimately, Pastorius’s story serves as a useful case study of the tangible ramifications of authenticity disputes and the complicated ways in which musicians have attempted to navigate contested musical spaces within popular music.

Cavalli, Massimo. "Double bass and electric bass: the case study of John Patitucci." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Évora, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10174/18726.

Abstract:
The electric bass and double bass are two different instruments sharing a common function: they link harmony with rhythm, especially when talking about jazz music. The capacity of a bassist to fully support an ensemble is something that can be achieved individually playing electric or double bass. However there are some bassists who, despite of the technical differences between these two instruments, choose to play both. Some of these performers are true masters using and switching electric and double bass according to the different musical settings. It is possible to define similarities and differences between the electric and double bass, but is it viable to use similar approaches too? In order to investigate this field, I focus my research on one exemplar player who combines all the qualities needed to both play electric than double bass: John Patitucci, an inspiration for bassists of all generations and a musician who synthesizes all the fundamental characteristics of an ideal bass player. This dissertation is inspired by Patitucci’s example and by the urge to fill a gap in the specialized literature concerning the history and application of different left and right hand techniques on the electric and double bass. The main purpose of this study is to create the backbone of a bass program for teaching both instruments using John Patitucci as example. His technical approach on both instruments and his soloing vocabulary are points of departure of this dissertation. I begin my study with the historical origins of Patitucci’s techniques ending with the development of exercises created in order to teach his techniques and vocabulary to those who aspire to play electric and double bass; RESUMO: Baixo elétrico e contrabaixo, dois instrumentos distintos que partilham uma função comum: a possibilidade de produzir um conjunto de notas capazes de interligar uma grelha harmonia a uma base rítmica, criando uma coesão estética e musical, sobretudo na música jazz.

Abstract:
The advent and development of the electric bass as an instrument was examined in relation to its application to the genre of jazz and related styles. The evolving role of the bass in the early stages of the development of the jazz genre was considered. The work of pioneering acoustic bassists such as Jimmy Blanton emancipated the bass from its traditional, subordinate and supportive function. Bassists began to explore harmonically elaborate solos in a similar fashion to horn players. Electric bassists are able to expand on the harmonic aspects of the instrument partly due to the playability afforded by the electric bass as opposed to the acoustic bass. Leo Fender’s 1951 Precision bass was a significant development, though it was preceded by earlier attempts to create various electric amplified basses. Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke were key figures in the history of the electric bass, and were influenced by traditional jazz music. In turn, they influenced the development of jazz and related styles such as fusion. Modern electric bass virtuosos such as Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten have effectively incorporated traditional jazz influences into their compositions and performances. Jazz and related styles of music continue to evolve, influenced by pedagogical practices and electric bass instruction in academic settings.

Abstract:
The goal with this project was to expand the traditional way of using and playing the electric bass. Playing the bass has traditionally meant laying down a musical foundation upon which other ensemble members can play from and with. This process included: use of effects in both discrete and obvious ways, experimenting with fingering and right-hand position, playing techniques and use of different instruments. These parameters were then incorporated into three new songs of which the composing process is described in this thesis. All three songs made the player pushing the limits in terms of timing, accuracy and sound from a traditional bass player point of view.   Conclusions were then made regarding new ways of playing, treating and viewing the electric bass. A new way of viewing the electric bass as an acoustic instrument, the use of effects as subtle sound enhancers and the need of good craftsmanship to maintain solid feel when playing technically demanding music.

Abstract:
There have been a number of computer assisted musical instrument tutoring systems developed over the years for a variety of instruments. However, there has not been significant development in a tutoring system designed specifically for the electric bass guitar. Furthermore, while many of these tutoring systems leverage technology, the vast majority have not capitalized on increasing student motivation and engagement through integrating digital game-based learning. This thesis presents a high-level design of an electric bass tutoring system which integrates game elements. In order to establish a well-founded design, the thesis first reviews: the notable design features from previous computer assisted musical instrument tutoring systems, the musical elements of an electric bass performance which a human teacher would focus on when providing feedback to a student, methods of extracting these musical elements, and the game elements which foster student engagement and motivation.

Abstract:
Battery Electric Vehicle as an environmental friendly transportation alternative has already emerged as well as fade out of the market twice. It has been reintroduced along with the increasing concern about the environment issue. This recent diffusion is surrounded by lots of dynamic changes and uncertainties. However, most current studies focus on political, financial as well as infrastructure factors but neglect factors like the technology especially how people perceived it. Therefore, this study mainly research into how the technology development impact on the diffusion of battery electric vehicle. To achieve this aim, a model based study was conducted targeting Swedish electric vehicle market. In the research, customers are considered to be the target objective because they are the one  who perceive the technology and make decision for adoption directly. In order to know the relationship between them, researches have been conducted through qualitative and quantitative approach. Empirical work including interviews and survey were conducted through tripartite aspect to investigate the customer needs and related technology. The investigation indicates the environmentally friendly performance is the key driving force perceived by the early adopters. Meanwhile, range issue, total cost of ownership and safety & technology reliability are identified as the top three critical concerns that  hold back customer purchasing decision. A modified classic model for the innovation diffusion has been proposed which is used to evaluate the technology’s perception based on historical data. Two BEV- related technologies were chosen as examples to prove and illustrate the relationship between technology development and electric vehicle diffusion. The results showed that the BEV-related technologies, which have potential ability to address critical customer demand, are able to impact on the customer adoption positively through valid perception by customer. Taking technology development and perception into consideration, the diffusion process should be accelerated to some extent. Technologies which can be more easily perceived tend to have more impact in the diffusion process.

Abstract:
My original contribution to knowledge is a portfolio of work that, through composition, improvisation and performance, expands the role of the electric bass guitar in contemporary Western art music. More specifically, these works address three areas that were hitherto underexplored in existing repertoire: • Works for solo bass guitar and electronics. • Works for bass guitar and ensemble that incorporate the instrument as an equal and important part of an overall sound. • The use of the bass guitar in sonic arts idioms. This research, as well as challenging the role of the bass guitar, also aims to expand the sonic and technical palette of the instrument whilst demonstrating its potential to be a valued part of the modern composer’s instrumental resource. This project comprises: a compositional portfolio of solo and ensemble works; eight CDs, containing recordings of both improvised and scored works; an accompanying written commentary (original musical scores are included as an appendix in the commentary).

Abstract:
Audio-to-MIDI conversion can be used to allow digital musical control by means of an analog instrument. Audio-to-MIDI converters rely on fundamental frequency estimators that are frequently restricted to a minimum delay of two fundamental periods. This delay is perceptible for the case of bass notes. In this paper, we propose a lowlatency fundamental frequency estimation method that relies on specific characteristics of the electric bass guitar. By means of physical modelling and signal acquisition, we show that the assumptions of the method relies on generalize throughout electric basses. We evaluate our method in a dataset with musical notes played by diverse bassists. Results show that our method outperforms the Yin method in low-latency settings, which indicates its suitability for low-latency audio-to-MIDI conversion of the electric bass sound.

Abstract:
For the last three years, GADS Services of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) has worked with other members of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) to review and improve the IEEE Standard 762, “Definitions for Reporting Electric Generating Unit Reliability, Availability and Productivity.” IEEE 762 is the basis of equations and definitions for the NERC Generating Availability Data System (GADS). With the help of North American, European and South African colleagues, the IEEE 762 has moved closer to that used in other parts of the world. This paper explains several major changes to IEEE 762 to bring about the compatibility. It also mentions some applications that are used by NERC GADS.

Abstract:
An overview of the market potential of various solar electric technologies considers the application to both distributed generation (DG) systems and building integrated systems. The State of California is used as an example of the analysis of system performance, economic return on investment and market penetration over the next decade. California was chosen as a test case because of recent central generation and T&D shortages. In the distributed generation context, solar energy has the potential to meet a large portion of the peak demand of California. With existing tax credits, systems are cost effective in certain locations at the present time. PV can be installed relatively quickly (weeks) on existing residential and commercial buildings with no requirements for the lengthy environmental reviews and siting problems of most power plants; therefore they are the fastest source which can be deployed in most locations in California. The approach in this article uses hourly loads derived from standard simulations. Along with the California building inventory by building type, hourly solar system simulations for standard buildings from each sector (e.g., hospitals, restaurants, schools, offices) and microeconomic calculations, returns on investment for each location and each building type are found. Finally the Bass diffusion model is used to calculate the number of solar modules that will be sold each year for the next decade. Results show that much of the output of the US photovoltaic industry could be economically dispatched in California.

Abstract:
This rapid literature review summarises evidence on the relationship between electric car uptake and health. The review found a limited but emerging evidence base derived predominantly from studies exploring the issue in the United States (US), China and Europe. The evidence base provides a mixed and complex picture given the heterogeneity of methodological approaches and contextual analyses to assessing impact.

Abstract:
In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.
