Abstract:
The electric bass and double bass are two different instruments sharing a common function: they link harmony with rhythm, especially when talking about jazz music. The capacity of a bassist to fully support an ensemble is something that can be achieved individually playing electric or double bass. However there are some bassists who, despite of the technical differences between these two instruments, choose to play both. Some of these performers are true masters using and switching electric and double bass according to the different musical settings. It is possible to define similarities and differences between the electric and double bass, but is it viable to use similar approaches too? In order to investigate this field, I focus my research on one exemplar player who combines all the qualities needed to both play electric than double bass: John Patitucci, an inspiration for bassists of all generations and a musician who synthesizes all the fundamental characteristics of an ideal bass player. This dissertation is inspired by Patitucci’s example and by the urge to fill a gap in the specialized literature concerning the history and application of different left and right hand techniques on the electric and double bass. The main purpose of this study is to create the backbone of a bass program for teaching both instruments using John Patitucci as example. His technical approach on both instruments and his soloing vocabulary are points of departure of this dissertation. I begin my study with the historical origins of Patitucci’s techniques ending with the development of exercises created in order to teach his techniques and vocabulary to those who aspire to play electric and double bass; RESUMO: Baixo elétrico e contrabaixo, dois instrumentos distintos que partilham uma função comum: a possibilidade de produzir um conjunto de notas capazes de interligar uma grelha harmonia a uma base rítmica, criando uma coesão estética e musical, sobretudo na música jazz. A capacidade de um baixista de conseguir alcançar de forma eficiente esta ligação como sólido suporte para um “ensemble” musical está na base de uma sua eventual afirmação profissional. Há músicos que apesar das diferencias técnicas entre estes dois instrumentos, decidiram tocar ambos; alguns deles conseguiram destacarse, usando e trocando o baixo elétrico e o contrabaixo para servir melhor diferentes situações musicais. O contrabaixo e baixo elétrico têm características em comum mas ao mesmo tempo diferem por apresentar algumas diferenças técnica substanciais; será por isso possível abordar, explorar e aprender ambos utilizando uma mesma base metodológica? Com o intuito de explorar esta possibilidade direcionei a minha pesquisa para o estudo de um músico que no curso da sua longa carreira consegui grande destaque em quanto baixista elétrico e contrabaixista. John Patitucci é a síntese desta tipologia de músico, sendo uma fonte de inspiração para baixistas de todas as gerações. Esta dissertação é inspirada no seu exemplo e no desejo de colmatar o vazio presente na literatura musical comum aos dois instrumentos sobre a história e aplicação das técnicas da mão esquerda e direita. O foco principal é a criação de uma base sólida para o futuro desenvolvimento de um programa de ensino comum para o baixo eléctrico e o contrabaixo, utilizando o vocabulário técnico e improvisativo de Patitucci como ponto de partida. A dissertação aborda as origens históricas das técnicas utilizadas por Patitucci desenvolvendo, numa fase sucessiva, exercícios criados com a função de ensinar as suas técnicas aos que desejarem aprofundar a prática do baixo elétrico e do contrabaixo.

Abstract:
The advent and development of the electric bass as an instrument was examined in relation to its application to the genre of jazz and related styles. The evolving role of the bass in the early stages of the development of the jazz genre was considered. The work of pioneering acoustic bassists such as Jimmy Blanton emancipated the bass from its traditional, subordinate and supportive function. Bassists began to explore harmonically elaborate solos in a similar fashion to horn players. Electric bassists are able to expand on the harmonic aspects of the instrument partly due to the playability afforded by the electric bass as opposed to the acoustic bass. Leo Fender’s 1951 Precision bass was a significant development, though it was preceded by earlier attempts to create various electric amplified basses. Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke were key figures in the history of the electric bass, and were influenced by traditional jazz music. In turn, they influenced the development of jazz and related styles such as fusion. Modern electric bass virtuosos such as Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten have effectively incorporated traditional jazz influences into their compositions and performances. Jazz and related styles of music continue to evolve, influenced by pedagogical practices and electric bass instruction in academic settings.

Abstract:
The goal with this project was to expand the traditional way of using and playing the electric bass. Playing the bass has traditionally meant laying down a musical foundation upon which other ensemble members can play from and with. This process included: use of effects in both discrete and obvious ways, experimenting with fingering and right-hand position, playing techniques and use of different instruments. These parameters were then incorporated into three new songs of which the composing process is described in this thesis. All three songs made the player pushing the limits in terms of timing, accuracy and sound from a traditional bass player point of view.   Conclusions were then made regarding new ways of playing, treating and viewing the electric bass. A new way of viewing the electric bass as an acoustic instrument, the use of effects as subtle sound enhancers and the need of good craftsmanship to maintain solid feel when playing technically demanding music.

There have been a number of computer assisted musical instrument tutoring systems developed over the years for a variety of instruments. However, there has not been significant development in a tutoring system designed specifically for the electric bass guitar. Furthermore, while many of these tutoring systems leverage technology, the vast majority have not capitalized on increasing student motivation and engagement through integrating digital game-based learning.This thesis presents a high-level design of an electric bass tutoring system which integrates game elements. In order to establish a well-founded design, the thesis first reviews: the notable design features from previous computer assisted musical instrument tutoring systems, the musical elements of an electric bass performance which a human teacher would focus on when providing feedback to a student, methods of extracting these musical elements, and the game elements which foster student engagement and motivation.
Au cours des dernières années, plusieurs systèmes d'enseignement assisté par ordinateur ont été développés pour une variété d'instruments de musiques. Cependant, il n'y a toujours pas de développements considérables d'un système éducatif qui soit dédié à l'apprentissage de la basse électrique. Une grande partie des systèmes existant misent beaucoup sur la technologie sans chercher à motiver l'élève en intégrant l'élément de participation interactive que peut générer un jeu électronique éducatif.Ce mémoire présente la conception d'un système d'enseignement de haut niveau qui examine les éléments du jeu dans le cadre de l'apprentissage de la basse électrique. Afin d'établir les fondements de la conception, le mémoire considère : les principales caractéristiques des systèmes d'enseignement musical assisté par ordinateur antérieurs; les éléments musicaux d'une performance de basse électrique sur lesquels un enseignant se concentrerait au cours du processus de rétroaction en personne; les méthodes qui permettent de déterminer ces éléments musicaux, et; les éléments du jeu qui favorisent la participation et la motivation de l'étudiant.

Abstract:
Battery Electric Vehicle as an environmental friendly transportation alternative has already emerged as well as fade out of the market twice. It has been reintroduced along with the increasing concern about the environment issue. This recent diffusion is surrounded by lots of dynamic changes and uncertainties. However, most current studies focus on political, financial as well as infrastructure factors but neglect factors like the technology especially how people perceived it. Therefore, this study mainly research into how the technology development impact on the diffusion of battery electric vehicle.To achieve this aim, a model based study was conducted targeting Swedish electric vehicle market. In the research, customers are considered to be the target objective because they are the one  who perceive the technology and make decision for adoption directly. In order to know the relationship between them, researches have been conducted through qualitative and quantitative approach. Empirical work including interviews and survey were conducted through tripartite aspect to investigate the customer needs and related technology. The investigation indicates the environmentally friendly performance is the key driving force perceived by the early adopters. Meanwhile, range issue, total cost of ownership and safety & technology reliability are identified as the top three critical concerns that  hold back customer purchasing decision. A modified classic model for the innovation diffusion has been proposed which is used to evaluate the technology’s perception based on historical data. Two BEV- related technologies were chosen as examples to prove and illustrate the relationship between technology development and electric vehicle diffusion.The results showed that the BEV-related technologies, which have potential ability to address critical customer demand, are able to impact on the customer adoption positively through valid perception by customer. Taking technology development and perception into consideration, the diffusion process should be accelerated to some extent. Technologies which can be more easily perceived tend to have more impact in the diffusion process.
Batteridrivna elektriska fordon(BEV) som ett miljövänligt transportalternativ redan har dykt upp, liksom försvunnit från marknaden två gånger. Det har återinförts tillsammans med den ökande oron för miljöfrågan. Denna nya diffusion är omgiven av dynamiska förändringar och osäkerheter. Men de flesta av dagens studier fokuserar på politiska, ekonomiska och infrastrukturella faktorer, men försummar faktorer relaterat till tekniken framför allt hur människor uppfattar det. Därför undersökte denna studie främst hur den tekniska utvecklingen påverkar spridningen av batteridrivna fordon.För att uppnå detta syfte, gjordes en modell baserad kring en studie av den svenska elbilsmarknaden. I forskningen anses kunderna vara målet målgruppen eftersom de är de som uppfattar tekniken och tar beslut om införandet direkt. För att veta förhållandet mellan dem, har kvalitativa och kvantitativa undersökningar genomförts. Empiriskt arbete inklusive intervjuer och undersökningen genomfördes genom tre olika aspekter för att undersöka kundernas behov och relaterad teknik. Undersökningen visar att miljövänlig prestanda är den viktigaste drivkraften som uppfattas av early adopters. Samtidigt har räckviddsproblematiken, totala ägandekostnaden och tillförlitlighet i säkerhet och teknologi identifierats som de tre kritiska problemen som tillbakahåller kunden från ett köpbeslut. En modifierad klassisk modell för innovationsspridning har föreslagits som används för att utvärdera teknikens uppfattning baserad på historiska data. Två BEV-relaterade teknologier valdes som exempel för att bevisa och illustrera förhållandet mellan teknikutveckling och elbilsdiffusion.Resultaten visade att BEV-relaterad teknologi, som har potential förmåga att ta itu med den kritiska efterfrågan från kunderna, kan påverka kundacceptans positivt genom giltig uppfattning av kunden. Om teknikutveckling och uppfattning beaktas, bör diffusionsprocessen påskyndas i viss utsträckning. Teknik som lättare kan uppfattas tenderar att ha mer genomslag i diffusionsprocessen.

My original contribution to knowledge is a portfolio of work that, through composition, improvisation and performance, expands the role of the electric bass guitar in contemporary Western art music. More specifically, these works address three areas that were hitherto underexplored in existing repertoire: • Works for solo bass guitar and electronics. • Works for bass guitar and ensemble that incorporate the instrument as an equal and important part of an overall sound. • The use of the bass guitar in sonic arts idioms. This research, as well as challenging the role of the bass guitar, also aims to expand the sonic and technical palette of the instrument whilst demonstrating its potential to be a valued part of the modern composer’s instrumental resource. This project comprises: a compositional portfolio of solo and ensemble works; eight CDs, containing recordings of both improvised and scored works; an accompanying written commentary (original musical scores are included as an appendix in the commentary).

I denna uppgift kommer jag presentera resultatet av min självstudie där jag lär mig tekniken vandrande bas på elbas genom lärarledda elbaslektioner. Denna process är videoinspelad, semistrukturerad intervju har hållits och dokumentationen analyseras genom transkription. Jag kommer bearbeta begreppet kunskap och redovisa några teorier om vad kunskap är och hur man kan kategorisera detta begrepp genom antingen uppdelande av praktisk och teoretisk kunskap. Jag kommer också undersöka huruvida pragmatismens kunskapssyn är applicerbar på denna studie. Studien behandlar hur jag använt mig av mina kunskaper som klassisk gitarrist i min inlärning av elbas. Hur jag kan använda mina kunskaper funna i elbasspelet i mitt klassiska gitarrspel. Även hur de pedagogiska upptäckterna jag gör i elbasspel kan användas i min framtida roll både som elbaslärare och gitarrlärare. Detta behandlas med ett sociokulturellt perspektiv i grunden samt mästarlära. Resultatet visar att förkunskaper i klassisk gitarr är mycket användbart om man vill lära sig elbas och att flera aspekter av gitarrspelet är direkt eller indirekt överförbara till elbasen. Det kommer också visa sig att det finns flera olikheter som kan försvåra inlärandet av elbas. Jag har också hittat grundläggande kunskap i metodik för elbasspel på nybörjarstadium.
In this project, I will present the result of my self-study where I learn the technique of walking bass on electric bass through teacher-led electric bass lessons. This process is video-recorded, semi-structured interview has been held and the documentation is analyzed by transcription. I will process the concept of knowledge and report some theories on what knowledge is and how to categorize this concept through either the division of practical or theoretical knowledge. I will also examine whether the knowledge view of pragmatism is applicable to this study. The study deals with how I used my knowledge as a classical guitarist in my learning of electric bass. How I can use my knowledge found in the electric bass game in my classic guitar play. Even how the pedagogical discoveries I make in electric bass games can be used in my future role both as electric bass teacher and guitar teacher. This is dealt with a socio-cultural perspective in the basics and master-apprentice perspective. The result shows that prior knowledge of classical guitar is very useful if you want to learn electric bass and that several aspects of the guitar play are directly or indirectly transferable to the electric base. It will also show several differences between the instruments that can make learning electric bass more difficult. I have also found basic knowledge in methodology for electric bass games at the beginner stage.

O que se buscou neste trabalho foi encontrar as raízes que fundamentam as bases musicais do samba, bem como as estragégias presentes na construção de uma linha de baixo neste gênero, tanto no que herdou das origens da música europeia, quanto naquilo que incorporou da cultural musical africana. Depois disso, através da transcrição e análise das linhas de baixo de duas versões do samba Águas de Março, música de autoria de Tom Jobim e gravadas nos discos Elis (1972) e Elis & Tom (1974), buscouqse identificar os padrões rítmicos, melódicos, técnicos e interpretativos mais presentes e marcantes do estilo de Luizão Maia. Percebemos haver grande escassez de trabalhos sobre baixo elétrico no samba, e aparentemente nenhuma dissertação ou tese sobre Luizão, apesar de ser considerado pela maior parte dos baixistas como o criador da linguagem musical do samba no baixo elétrico; “The modernization of electric bass in samba: analysis of transcriptions of bassist Luizão Maia in the 1970’s”. ABSTRACT: This work intended to find the roots that guides the musical bases of samba, as well as the strategies present in the construction of a samba’s bass line, both in what it inherited from the origins of european music, and in what was incorporated from african’s musical culture. After that, through the transcription and analysis of the bass lines of two versions of the samba Águas de Março, written by Tom Jobim and recorded on the albuns Elis (1972) and Elis & Tom (1974), we sought to identify the rhythmic and melodic patterns, as well the technical and interpretive elements more present and salient in the style of Luizão Maia. We perceive a big gap on works of electric bass in samba, and apparently no dissertations or thesis of Luizão Maia, although he’s considered by most bassists as the creator of the musical language of samba on electric bass.

Abstract:
The focus of this research has been, and continues to be, the development and expansion of an original approach and language on the 6-string electric bass that would be both robust and flexible enough to function in almost any role, regardless of genre or instrumentation. This PhD is the first scholarly investigation of the 6-string electric bass in the academic world. In addition to extensive technical information this research deals with larger more conceptual concerns to do with this young instrument as well as introducing a large body of original recorded work. During the four years of this research program I have developed new methodologies and approaches to practice as a means of exploring the research questions that drive the work. In addition to this I have performed and recorded with many internationally significant musicians and groups spanning many styles and aesthetic concerns. The 6-string electric bass is a very young instrument with enormous potential, relatively little history and the subject of no academic discourse to date. Although the 4-string electric bass and to a lesser extent the 5-string electric bass have some historic precedent particularly in many forms of popular music, the 6-string electric bass has only been made use of in a limited manner in various sub-genres of music. Although what I deal with here could be considered part of a number of sub-genres, these are not areas where this instrument in its short history so far has been made much use of at all, despite it being ideal for so many of these settings. At this point in my development I believe I have developed original and significant approaches to 6-string electric bass roles and that this is borne out in the video footage and audio recordings that make up my recorded submission. In this submission I present rigorous interrogation of the research questions that drive the investigation, provide detailed discussion of my practice-based research methodologies, demonstrate original techniques and approaches to performance, and offer a thorough analysis of the significance of the findings.

El presente trabajo de investigación se basa en una propuesta de negocio en la industria de accesorios musicales dirigida a personas que toquen guitarra y bajo, y que se encuentren entre los NSE A, B y C en Lima Metropolitana. Para investigar y validar varios supuestos, se ha creado la marca “Mallku”, una empresa que diseña uno de los accesorios más conocidos, pero, a la vez, difícil de encontrar en el mercado, el pedalboard. Este accesorio sirve como una herramienta que ordena los pedales que usan guitarristas y bajistas, y permiten ahorrar tiempo al poder llevarlos ya armados a una grabación o al escenario. A partir de las primeras investigaciones, se validó que hay un gran potencial para desarrollar este producto, que el consumidor valora los artículos artesanales, y que aprecia que se utilice madera como insumo principal. Por otro lado, se pudo validar la aceptación del producto a través de las ventas realizadas en redes sociales, llegando a vender estos accesorios a miembros de bandas que están en crecimiento y que ya son relevantes para la escena local. Para la realización del proyecto se hicieron diversos análisis de la industria, los cuales involucran al consumidor, insights, competidores y otros factores externos que permitieron elaborar diferentes planes y determinar una estructura organizacional favorable para la viabilidad del mismo. Como resultado, bajo una inversión inicial de S/. 39,227.00, se obtiene una utilidad neta de S/. 31,158.00 para el primer año, S/. 24,077.00 para el segundo y S/. 23,105.00 para el tercero.
This research work is based on a business proposal in the musical accessories industry aimed at people who play guitar and bass, and who are between socioeconomic levels A, B and C in Lima Metropolitana. To investigate and validate many hypothesis, we have created “Mallku”, a business that designs one of the best known products in the industry, the pedalboard. This accessory works by helping organize the pedals that guitar and bass players use, and allows to save time when the users need to record or give a concert. From the first investigations, it was validated that there is great potential to develop this product, that the consumer values ​handmade items, and that appreciates that wood is used as the main input. On the other hand, it was possible to validate the acceptance of the product through sales made in social networks, selling these accessories to members of bands that are growing and that are already relevant to the local scene. For the realization of the project, various analyzes of the industry were made, which involve the consumer, insights, competitors and other external factors that allowed developing different plans and determining a favorable organizational structure for its viability. As a result, under an initial investment of S /. 39,227.00, we expect to obtain a net profit of S /. 31,158.00 for the first year, S /. 24,077.00 for the second and S /. 23,105.00 for the third.

Abstract:
Studiens syfte är att belysa några yrkesverksamma elbasisters syn på egen utveckling och dess samband med övning. Som metod har halvstrukturerade intervjuer använts. Informanterna utgörs av tre yrkesverksamma elbasister som berättar om sin syn på övning och utveckling samt vad de anser vara viktigt för att utvecklas som elbasist. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten för denna studie är ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv då målet är att göra en djupare analys och tolkning av de intervjuades livsvärld. Resultatet visar att informanterna tycker att viktiga byggstenar i utvecklingen är att spela tillsammans med andra och lyssna på musik. De beskriver också sin syn på övning, tonbildning och sound samt sina upplevelser av att spela musik. Förhoppningen är att studien ska kunna bidra till mer instrumentspecifik forskning om övning samt inspirera utövare till att diskutera och dela med sig av sina varierade erfarenheter av övning.
The study aims to highlight some professional bass players approach to self-development and its connection with the exercise. The method that has been used is semi-structured interviews. The informants consist of three professional bass players who tell us about their views on practicing and development and what they consider to be important to develop as a bass player. The theoretical basis for this study is a hermeneutic perspective when the goal is to do a deeper analysis and interpretation of the interviewed life-world. The result shows that the interviewees think that the important building blocks in the development are to play with others and listen to music. They also describe their view of exercise, voice production and sound as well as their experiences of playing music. It is hoped that the study will contribute to more instrument-specific research on exercise and inspire practitioners to discuss and share their varied experiences of exercise.

Flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía, taking advantage of the ongoing cultural revolution in Spain during the seventies decided to break from tradition by shaping ”Nuevo Flamenco” through flamenco-jazz ensemble ”Paco de Lucía Sextet”. Within its repertoire, the first regular flamenco bass-line: ”Monasterio de Sal”. Electrical bassist Carles Benavent would have a key role in this development, a trait seldom found in academical works of musicology. The aim of the present thesis is to partially fill this void while shedding some light on the revolutionary contributions of Benavent. In order to do so, studying relevant literature, listening to phonograms comparatively, transcribing/analyzing ”Monasterio de Sal” and interviewing Mr. Benavent himself were used as main methods. The conclusion has been drawn that there was barely any electrical bass in flamenco before Benavent and that his work with de Lucía (and later others) would entirely reform the way electric bass was perceived from within and outside this genre of music. It is of no less interest to observe that Benavents main influences for this endeavor were the principal figures of contemporary jazz-bass (Jaco Pastorius) and flamenco-guitar (Paco de Lucía) respectively, infusing ”Monasterio de Sal”, with meaningful historical value.

Syftet med detta arbete är att studera min läroprocess när jag övar på notläsning a prima vista på elbas samt att undersöka hur mina val för lärandesituationens design påverkar mitt lärande. Under en fyraveckorsperiod har jag övat a vista-läsning 3-4 gånger per vecka vilket dokumenterats genom videofilmning och loggbok. Arbetet tar utgångspunkt i ett designteoretiskt perspektiv på lärande. Resultatet visar en progression i min förmåga att läsa a prima vista samt hur olika resurser påverkat lärandet. I diskussionsdelen problematiseras resultaten i förhållande till tidigare forskning inom området samt vilka förutsättningar det valda materialet och studiens metod innebär för mitt lärande.
The purpose of this work is to study my learning process when practicing sight-reading on the electric bass and to examine how my choices on the design of the learning situation affect my learning. During a four-week period I’ve been practicing sight-reading 3-4 times per week which has been documented using video recording and a logbook. The study is based on a design theoretical perspective on learning. The results show a progression in my ability to sight-read and also how various resources affect my learning. In the last chapter I problematize the results in relation to previous research in this field of study and what preconditions the chosen material and the study’s method mean for my learning.

Syftet med studien är att i relation till musik- och kulturskolornas verksamhetsidéer/planer få insikt i elbaslärares förhållningssätt till vad som är viktigt för nybörjarelever att lära sig. Utifrån detta syfte är avsikten att försöka förstå vilka lektionsmoment elbaslärare prioriterar i sin undervisning av nybörjarelever, varför de valt att fokusera på just dessa och deras syn på eventuella styrdokument för respektive arbetsplats. Jag har i min undersökning genomfört kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra elbaslärare från olika musik- och kulturskolor. Arbetets har sin utgångspunkt i historiska perspektiv på musikkulturskolornas framväxt och de pedagogiska traditioner som format dem samt det sociokulturella perspektivet på lärande.   I resultatet framkommer att det viktigaste för informanterna är att eleven får komma igång och spela så snabbt som möjligt och att den huvudsakliga drivkraften i nybörjarundervisning för elbaselever är lust, glädje och upplevelser – vilket går helt i linje med mycket av de tendenser som behandlas i forskning rörande musik- och kulturskolan samt dess verksamhetsplaner under senare år.   Under diskussionsrubriken diskuteras informanternas syn på vad de tycker är viktigt för nybörjarelever att lära sig i relation till de traditioner, idéer och värderingar som enligt det sociokulturella perspektivet styr hur undervisningen formas. Utöver detta diskuteras musiklärarnas förhållningssätt till rådande styrdokument och deras respektive arbetsplats verksamhetsplan.
The purpose of this study is, in relation to the activity ideas/plans of community schools of music and art, to gain insight into the electric bass teachers approach to what is important for beginners to learn. From this view, the intention is to try to understand which lesson content is prioritized in the teaching of beginners, why they chose to focus on these and their views on possible regulatory documents for each workplace. In my survey I have conducted qualitative interviews with four bass guitar teachers from various community schools of music and art. Work is based on theories of the emergence of community schools of music, the educational traditions that shaped them and the sociocultural perspective on learning.   The results show that the main driving force of beginners teaching for bass guitar students is desire, joy and experiences – which is in line with much of the trends covered in research on community schools of music and art and their activity plans in recent years.   In the discussion section the views on what informants thinks is important for beginners to learn is discussed in relation to the traditions, ideas and values according to previous research which determines how the lessons are shaped. In addition to this the music teacher's attitudes and relations to current regulatory documents at their respective workplace is discussed.

Cette thèse apporte une contribution aux méthodes numériques pour la simulation moléculaire ab initio, et plus spécifiquement pour le calcul de structures électroniques par l’équation de Schrödinger, ou par des formalismes comme la théorie de Hartree-Fock ou la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité. Elle propose une stratégie pour construire des bases mixtes ondelettes-gaussiennes dans l’approximation de Galerkin, combinant les qualités respectives de ces deux types de bases avec l’objectif de mieux capturer les points de rebroussement de la fonction d’onde. Les nombreux logiciels actuellement disponibles à l’usage des chimistes dans ce domaine (VASP, Gaussian, ABINIT...) se différencient par divers choix méthodologiques, notamment celui des fonctions de base pour exprimer les orbitales atomiques. Nouvel arrivant sur le marché, le code massivement parallèle BigDFT a opté pour les bases d’ondelettes. Comme le nombre de niveaux de résolution y est limité pour des raisons de performance,ces fonctions ne peuvent déployer pleinement leur puissance. La question posée est alors de savoir comment accroître la précision des calculs tous électrons au voisinage des singularités de type cusp de la solution, sans augmenter excessivement la complexité de BigDFT. La réponse que nous suggérons consiste à enrichir la base de fonctions d’échelles (niveau de résolution bas des bases d’ondelettes) par des fonctions gaussiennes centrées sur chaque position de noyau. La difficulté principale dans la construction d’une telle base mixte réside dans la détermination optimale du nombre de gaussiennes requises et de leurs écarts-types, de sorte que ces gaussiennes supplémentaires soient le mieux possible compatibles avec la base existante sous la contrainte d’un seuil d’erreur donné à l’avance. Nous proposons pour cela l’utilisation conjointe d’un estimateur a posteriori sur la diminution du niveau d’énergie et d’un algorithme glouton, ce qui aboutit à une suite incrémentale quasi-optimale de gaussiennes supplémentaires. Cette idée est directement inspirée des techniques de bases réduites. Nous développons les fondements théoriques de cette stratégie sur deux modèles 1-D linéaires qui sont des simplifications de l’équation de Schrödinger pour un électron,posée en domaine infini ou domaine périodique. Ces modèles prototypes sont étudiés en profondeur dans la première partie. La définition de l’estimateur a posteriori de type norme duale du résidu, ainsi que la déclinaison de la philosophie glouton en différents algorithmes concrets, sont présentées en seconde partie, accompagnées de résultats numériques. Les algorithmes proposés vont dans le sens d’une économie croissante du temps de calcul.Ils sont aussi de plus en plus empiriques, au sens où ils reposent de plus en plus sur les intuitions avec lesquelles les chimistes sont familiers. En particulier, le dernier algorithme pour plusieurs noyaux s’appuie en partie sur la validité du transfert atome/molécule et rappelle dans une certaine mesure les bases d’orbitales atomiques
This thesis aims to be a contribution to numerical methods for ab initio molecular simulation, and more specifically for electronic structure calculations by means of the Schrödingerequation or formalisms such as the Hartree-Fock theory or the Density Functional Theory. It puts forward a strategy to build mixed wavelet-Gaussian bases for the Galerkinapproximation, combining the respective advantages of these two types of bases in orderto better capture the cusps of the wave function.Numerous software programs are currently available to the chemists in this field (VASP,Gaussian, ABINIT... ) and differ from each other by various methodological choices,notably that of the basis functions used for expressing atomic orbitals. As a newcomer tothis market, the massively parallel BigDFT code has opted for a basis of wavelets. Dueto performance considerations, the number of multiresolution levels has been limited andtherefore users cannot benefit from the full potential of wavelets. The question is thus howto improve the accuracy of all-electron calculations in the neighborhood of the cusp-typesingularities of the solution, without excessively increasing the complexity of BigDFT.The answer we propose is to enrich the scaling function basis (low level of resolutionof the wavelet basis) by Gaussian functions centered on each nucleus position. The maindifficulty in constructing such a mixed basis lies in the optimal determination of the numberof Gaussians required and their standard deviations, so that these additional Gaussiansare compatible in the best possible way with the existing basis within the constraint of anerror threshold given in advance. We advocate the conjunction of an a posteriori estimateon the diminution of the energy level and a greedy algorithm, which results in a quasi-optimal incremental sequence of additional Gaussians. This idea is directly inspired bythe techniques of reduced bases.We develop the theoretical foundations of this strategy on two 1-D linear models thatare simplified versions of the Schrödinger equation for one electron in an infinite domainor a periodic domain. These prototype models are investigated in depth in the firstpart. The definition of the a posteriori estimate as a residual dual norm, as well as theimplementation of the greedy philosophy into various concrete algorithms, are presented inthe second part, along with extensive numerical results. These algorithms allow for moreand more saving of CPU time and become more and more empirical, in the sense thatthey rely more and more on the intuitions with which chemists are familiar. In particular,the last proposed algorithm partly assumes the validity of the atom/molecule transfer andis somehow reminiscent of atomic orbitals bases

In this thesis, the concept of A-basis and B-basis as it relates to the aviation industry is studied. The rst assumption that will be made in order to help with the formulation of the A-basis and B-basis values is that each of the samples from the obtained data is given by a normal distribution. With this assumption, the paper begins by deriving the formulas needed for obtaining A-basis and B-basis values. Once these formulas have been derived, they will be put to use in programs that are capable of running simulations. Then the thesis will examine the results and investigate if any problem areas arise. It will be discovered that there is a problem with the formulas derived as it pertains to the aviation industry, so the next step will be to nd where the error originates from and nd a suitable way to x this error. The next item that will be looked at is how to successfully run simulations where it is desirable to impose certain restrictions on the population mean of each factor that is being taken into consideration. The thesis will conclude by looking at what happens when combining both the method used to x the error discovered earlier and the method used to apply the order restriction, and again will run simulations by means of programs that take both methods into account. The results show how order restriction can be applied to the population means of the breaking strength of composite materials to obtain results that follow certain theories that have been determined by engineers.

This creative project explores the technical and musical possibilities associated with the composition of an electro-acoustic work, scored for double bass, eight-channel digital audio, and interactive electronics, that integrates the uniqueness and spontaneity of live performance with the textural, timbral, and spatial complexity that can be achieved through the use of prerecorded digital audio. The most significant compositional idea that is explored in this work is the interactions between the double bass, digital audio, and interactive electronics. These three components interact with one another on several levels. This is not limited to harmonic, melodic, or rhythmic components, but also includes such attributes as timbre, texture, dynamics, timing, improvisation, and sound projection. To create this interaction, several computer applications are used for the realization of the digital audio and score notation, and in live performance.

This thesis presents the results and discussion of the investigation of the effects of Brönsted bases on the kinetics and thermodynamics of two proton-coupled electron transfer processes: the mediated oxidation of glutathione and the electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the name given to reactions that involve the transfer of electron(s) accompanied by the exchange of proton(s). PCETs are found in many chemical and biological processes, some of current technological relevance such as the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells, which involves the transfer of four electrons and four protons (4e-, 4H+); or the splitting of water into protons (4H+), electrons (4e-) and oxygen (O2) efficiently achieved in photosynthesis. The study of PCET mechanisms is imperative to understanding biological processes as well as to developing more efficient technological applications. However, there are still many unanswered questions regarding the kinetic and thermodynamic performance of PCETs, and especially about the effect of different proton acceptors on the rate and mechanism of PCET reactions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Brönsted bases as proton acceptors on the kinetics and thermodynamics of two model PCET processes, the oxidation of glutathione and hydroquinone. The analysis presented in this thesis provides insight into the influence of different proton acceptors on the mechanism of PCET and it does so by studying these reactions from a different angle, that one of the acid-base catalysis theory which has been successfully applied to the investigation of numerous chemical reactions coupled to proton transfer. We hope future research of PCETs can benefit from the knowledge of acid-base catalysis to better understand these reactions at a molecular level.

Graph signal processing is a field concerning theprocessing of graphs with data associated to their vertices, oftenin the purpose of modeling networks. One area of this fieldthat has been under research in recent years is the developmentof frameworks for learning graph topologies from such data.This may be useful in situations where one wants to representa phenomenon with a graph, but where an obvious topologyis not available. The aim of this project was to evaluate theusefulness of one such proposed learning framework in thecontext of image segmentation. The method used for achievingthis consisted in constructing graph representations of imagesfrom said framework, and clustering their vertices with anestablished graph-based segmentation algorithm. The resultsdemonstrate that this approach may well be useful, although theimplementation used in the project carried out segmentationssignificantly slower than state of the art methods. A numberof possible improvements to be made regarding this aspect arehowever pointed out and may be subject for future work.
Grafsignalbehandling är ett ämnesområde vars syfte är att behandla grafer med data associerat till deras noder, ofta inom nätverksmodelleringen. Inom detta område pågår aktiv forskning med att utveckla tekniker för att konstruera graftopologier från sådana data. Dessa tekniker kan vara användbara när man vill representera ett fenomen med grafer, men då uppenbara grafstrukturer inte finns tillgängliga. Syftet med detta projekt var att utvärdera användbarheten hos en sådan teknik när den appliceras inom bildsegmentering. Metoden som användes bestod i att konstruera grafrepresentationer av bilder med hjälp av denna teknik, för att sedan behandla dessa med en etablerad, grafbaserad segmenteringsalgoritm. Resultaten påvisar att detta tillvägagångssätt under rätt förutsättningar kan producera tillfredsställande bildsegmenteringar. Dock är implementeringen som nyttjats i projektet betydligt långsammare än de metoder som vanligen används inom området. Ett antal förslag till prestandaförbättring utpekas, och kan vara föremål för framtida studier.

Abstract:
Depuis 2005, la miniaturisation des composants mémoires, qui, auparavant, suivait la loi de Moore, a ralenti. Ceci a conduit les chercheurs à multiplier les approches pour continuer à améliorer les dispositifs mémoires. Parmi ces approches, la piste des composants ferroélectriques semble très prometteuse. En 2011, une équipe du NamLab, à Dresde, en Allemagne, a découvert que le HfO2 dopé Si pouvait devenir ferroélectrique, avec une couche isolante de seulement 10 nm, ce qui résout le problème de compatibilité avec l’industrie CMOS des matériaux de structure pérovskite. Depuis, d’autres dopants ont été découverts. Cependant, de nouveaux problèmes freinent désormais l’apparition sur le marché des dispositifs ferroélectriques à base de HfO2. Comprendre les mécanismes qui régissent les propriétés ferroélectriques de ces matériaux est alors devenu un enjeu industriel majeur. Dans ce manuscrit, nous étudions le (Hf,Zr)O2 (HZO), et nous employons une technique peu utilisée pour élaborer ce type de matériau : la pulvérisation cathodique magnétron. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’établir des relations entre les conditions de croissance des différents matériaux et les propriétés électriques, de comprendre les mécanismes qui les régissent, ainsi que de rendre viable les dispositifs mémoires. Lors de l’élaboration de condensateurs, nous démontrons que des propriétés cristallochimiques particulières sont indispensables pour obtenir la ferroélectricité, et de nouvelles propriétés du HZO sont découvertes. Ensuite, nous cherchons à dépasser l’état de l’art. Par pulvérisation, nous obtenons parmi les meilleurs résultats au monde. Les tests industriels d’endurance et de rétention sont poussés au-delà de ce qui avait été fait auparavant dans la littérature. En particulier, l’influence des conditions de contraintes électriques y est décrite en détail, et nous mettons en évidence la présence d’une relaxation au cours des différents tests pouvant s’avérer problématique pour l’avènement d’applications industriels. Since 2005, the scaling of memory devices, which used to follow Moore's law, slowed down. This lead researchers to conduct multiple approaches in order to keep improving memory devices. Among these approaches, the pathway on ferroelectric components seems very promising. In 2011, a research team from the NamLab in Dresden, Germany, discovered that Si-doped HfO2 could become ferroelectric with an insulating layer of only 10 nm, which resolves the compatibility issue of perovskite-structured materials with CMOS industry. Since then, other dopants have been investigated. However, new issues are now slowing down the emergence of HfO2-based ferroelectric devices on the market. Understanding the mechanisms behind the ferroelectric properties of these materials has, therefore, become a major industrial issue. In this manuscript, we study (Hf,Zr)O2 (HZO), and we perform an under-utilized technique to elaborate this kind of material: magnetron sputtering. The goal of this thesis is to establish connections between the growth conditions of this material and the electrical properties, to understand the mechanisms behind them, as well as to make the memory devices viable. During the fabrication of the capacitors, we demonstrate that the particular cristallochemical properties are essential to obtain ferroelectricity, and that novel HZO properties are discovered. Afterwards, we seek to cross the state of the art. The results we obtain by sputtering are among the best in the world. The industrial endurance and retention tests are pushed beyond what has been done in the literature so far. Particularly, the influence of electrical stress conditions is thoroughly detailed, and we put to evidence the presence of a relaxation during the different tests that could turn out to become problematic for the emergence of industrial applications. It does not seem that this problem has been identified beforehand

Abstract:
Over the last several decades, two methods have emerged as the standard tools for the calculation of electronic band structures. These methods, the Car-Parinello plane wave method and the linear augmented plane wave method (LAPW), each have strengths and weaknesses in different regimes of physical problems. The Car-Parinello algorithm is ideal for calculations with soft pseudopotentials and large numbers of atoms. The LAPW method, on the other hand, easily handles all-electron and hard-core pseudopotential calculations with a small number of atoms. The projector basis method, presented here, is a hybrid mixed basis method which allows the calculation of moderately large ({dollar}\sim{dollar}200) numbers of atoms represented by hard pseudopotentials. This method will then be used to calculate two members of a relatively new mass of materials, called electrides, in which the anion has been replaced with a localized electron.

Abstract:
Nickel-base superalloys obtain high temperature mechanical properties through formation of precipitate phases formed via heat treatment. The precipitate microstructure evolves with heat treatment or thermal exposure, which can lead to degrading mechanical properties. This project focuses on the use of electrical resistivity as a non-destructive testing method to monitor the precipitate phase in Waspaloy (a polycrystalline nickel-base superalloy). The evolution of the precipitate microstructure is characterized throughout the volume of the specimens using both small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultra small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) measurements. These measurements are also aided by microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements.

Abstract:
Fastighetsautomation används för att automatisera processer i byggnader och kan avse automatisering av HVAC, belysning, säkerhetsfunktioner samt mycket mer. Det här arbetet avser en projektering av ett BAS för HVAC för cirkellokstallet i Sundsvall åt SKIFU. Projekteringen avser att ta reda på vad nuvarande system består av samt att jämföra två nya system som SKIFU valt, dessa är Schneider Electric och Regin. Metoden för att finna ut nuvarande system är att göra fältstudier på platsen samt att studera dokumentation tillhörande byggnaden. För att göra jämförelsen görs en litteraturstudie samt studie av tillverkarnas hemsidor. Det nuvarande systemet är ett Honeywell Excel 5000 och använder sig av LonTalk och BACnet för kommunikation. Systemet består av DHC, DUCar och flertalet aktorer och sensorer. De nya systemen Schneider Electric och Regin har olika kommunikationsstandarder, KNX respektive EXOline, BACnet, M-bus och Modbus. Schneider behöver inte använda DHC och DUC då alla enheter i KNX har mikrokontrollers och inte behövs styras centralt. Med KNX blir det stor flexibilitet då KNX har över 400 tillverkare av produkter som är KNX-certifierade. Regin med deras flera kommunikationsstandarder har även de stor flexibilitet men gateways kan behövas användas mellan kommunikationsstandarderna vilket kan leda till packet loss. Författaren av rapporten anser att Schneider Electric ska väljas på grunderna av att KNX används och att det i övriga fall inte skiljer sig åt mellan tillverkarna utan enheterna fungerar liknande men med olika standarder. Slutsatsen är att det BAS som är installerat är av Honeywell och om något system ska installeras så bör det vara KNX -baserat då gateways inte behövs och KNX är störst på den europeiska marknaden.
Building automation is used to automate processes in buildings and can be used for HVAC, lightning, security and more. This work relates to a BAS for HVAC in a building owned by SKIFU. It also relates to find what the current system is and a do comparison between two systems chosen by SKIFU, Schneider Electric and Regin. The method to find out what the current system is, is to make field studies and examine the documentation connected to the building. To be able to do the comparison between Schneider Electric and Regin a study of literature and the manufacturer’s website is made. The existing system is a Honeywell Excel 5000 system and it uses LonTalk and BACnet as communication standards. The system has DHC, DUCs and numerus actuators and sensors. The new systems Schneider Electric and Regin have different communication standards, KNX for Schneider Electric and EXOline, BACnet, M-bus and Modbus for Regin.  Schneider Electric does not need DHC and DUCs due to micro controllers is integrated in KNX units. With KNX the flexibility is high due to over 400 companies produce KNX certified units. Regin with their many standards in communication is also flexible but gateways may cause packet loss. The author of this work think that KNX is the system that should be chosen because of KNX as communication standard, and the communication is the main difference between the systems.  The conclusion is that the system used at cikellokstallet is a Honeywell system and if SKIFU are going to change system a KXN based system should be used, based on KNX does not need any gateways and KNX is the most used standard on the market.
