Study of the guided waves in piezoelectric cylinders based on a semi-analytical finite element method is presented. In the study, the dispersion equation was formulated as a generalized eigenvalue problem by treating mechanical displacements and electric potential with one dimensional quadratic finite element model through the thickness of the cylinder. Here the general eigenvalue problem is depended on three parameters, namely, the frequency, the axial wave number and the circumferential wave. A non-integer circumferential wave is introduced here for studying the guided spiral wave. A wave sp

Abstract:
A timed lube oil injection system was developed for a field engine to improve power cylinder lubrication. The injection system used advanced prototype electronic injectors. The system was installed on a Cooper GMVA-10 located in West Virginia. A total of four cylinders were included in the study, two for the timed system and two for the baseline mechanical system. Cylinder wall lubrication, cylinder wear, piston wear, and ring wear tests were planned for various engine run times. The prototype timed lube oil system operated essentially until the prototype injector end-of-life was reached at ab

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the performance of electronic fuel gas admission valves and effects of continuous automatic cylinder balancing of large bore natural gas engines under actual field conditions. These goals have already been met under laboratory conditions at the Colorado State University Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory in Fort Collins. The specific project objectives were to:1. Extend the feasibility of electronic fuel gas admission valves where gas valve timing and duration are varied to optimize fuel control and charge mixing from the laboratory environmen

Abstract:
Using a laser, as opposed to a conventional (electrical) spark plug, to create combustion initiating spark is potentially advantageous for several reasons: flexibility in choosing and optimizing the spark location, in particular, to move the spark away from solid heat sinks; production of a more robust spark containing more energy; and obviation of electrode erosion problems. These advantages may lead to an extension of the lean limit, an increase in engine thermal efficiency, and the concomitant benefits of reduced pollutant emissions. Presented in this paper is the design and implementation

Abstract:
The pipeline industry uses over 8,000 large bore engines in gas transmission/compression service". These engines are typically gas fueled and spark ignited. Some early versions of the engines are piston scavenged, but most are turbocharged. Some models, especially those equipped for lean burn operation, utilize pre-combustion chambers for enhanced ignition. Typically, the gaseous fuel is admitted directly into the top of the engine combustion chamber by a cam-operated, mechanical gas admission valve (MGAV). The MGAV is operated by an engine driven cam, cam follower, push rod, and rocker assemb

Abstract:
Rugose wood is a complex disease of grapevines, characterized by modification of the woody cylinder of affected vines. The control of rugose wood is based on the production of healthy propagation material. Detection of rugose wood in grapevines is difficult and expensive: budwood from tested plants is grafted onto sensitive Vitis indicators and the appearance of symptoms is monitored for 3 years. The etiology of rugose wood is complex and has not yet been elucidated. Several elongated clostero-like viruses are consistently found in affected vines; one of them, grapevine virus A (GVA), is close

A Model-Based Investigation of Electrically Split Turbocharger Systems Capabilities to Overcome the Drawbacks of High-Boost Downsized Engines. SAE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2022-01-5052.

Abstract:
Engine downsizing is one the most common methods of coping with strict emission regulations. However, it must be coupled with complementary systems so that the engine performance would meet the standards. That is why new efficient solutions can pave the way toward this goal. The electric forced-induction system (EFIS) is the emerging replacement for conventional forced-induction systems (FIS), namely, turbochargers and superchargers. The reason behind this replacement is the drawbacks associated with FIS, among them are turbo lag and inefficiency in exhaust gas energy recycling. Electrically s
