Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the factors for an academic research project in electrical engineering to become relevant. Design/methodology/approach As a conceptual basis, a few theories of entrepreneurial university and triple helix were correlated, seeking to determine the main critical factors and the successful criteria of an academic research project. The research was conducted through four cases of electric engineering that succeed in generating social and economic impact. Findings When analyzing the available bibliography, it is clear that the connection among the companies, the market and the research that happens at the university is very important. Not only that, but also, according to the results, this is the key to generating revenue and impact on society. In addition, operational policies and competent leaders promoting this impact inside the universities are extremely important. Originality/value The topic was selected because of the reduced number of articles related to the identification and analyses of the main aspects that make an academic research project relevant to the society. Furthermore, the paper is significant because it analyzes the main factors that help develop a better society and country through academic research.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper presents results of the research project whose the main goal was to build a technology demonstrator of an electric supply system based on the PEM fuel cell. The electric supply system is dedicated to operation on a board of a submarine during emergency situations. The underwater conditions influence on a specific architecture of supply subsystems of the PEM fuel cell system. In this case the fuel cell stack is supplied by both clean hydrogen and clean oxygen stored in pressurized tanks. The hydrogen has to be delivered in a closed loop, while the oxygen can be delivered in a closed or an open loop. In the technology demonstrator, the supply of the fuel cell stack by the hydrogen in the closed loop and the oxygen in the open loop with a precise control of its flow were used. In the paper, a hardware and a software structures of the technology demonstrator are presented. Then, selected results of the PEM fuel cell system operation are included. The results of the research show precise control of the oxygen and a response of the system on rapid changes of an electric load responding to the loads working during an emergency situation on a board of a submarine. Mainly, results of the real fuel cell system operation are presented. The results of numerical research can be found in several publications of the authors included in the bibliography of the paper.

Abstract:
Dielectrophoresis is an electric force experienced by particles subjected to non-uniform electric fields. Recently, several technologies have been developed focused on the use of dielectrophoretic force (DEP) to manipulate and detect cells. On the other hand, there is no such great development in the field of DEP-based cell discrimination methods. Despite the demand for methods to differentiate biological cell states, most DEP developed methods have been focused on differentiation through geometric parameters. The novelty of the present work relies upon the point that a DEP force cell measurement is used as a discrimination method, capable of detecting heat killed yeast cells from the alive ones. Thermal treatment is used as an example of different biological state of cells. It comes from the fact that biological properties have their reflection in the electric properties of the particle, in this case a yeast cell. To demonstrate such capability of the method, 279 heat-killed cells were measured and compared with alive cells data from the literature. For each cell, six speeds were taken at different points in its trajectory inside a variable non-uniform electric field. The electric parameters in cell wall conductivity, cell membrane conductivity, cell membrane permittivity of the yeast cell from bibliography explains the DEP experimental force measured. Finally, alive and heat-treated cells were distinguished based on that measure. Our results can be explained through the well-known damage of cell structure characteristics of heat-killed cells.

However, SEV are still facing important technical obstacles to overcome. They include batteries energy storage capacity, charging times, efficiency of the solar panels and electrical propulsion systems. Solving any of those problems and electric vehicles will compete-complement the internal combustion engines vehicles. In the present work, we propose an electrical propulsion system based on three phase induction motor in order to obtain the desired speed and torque with less power loss. Because of the need to lightweight nature, small volume, low cost, less maintenance and high efficiency system, a three phase squirrel cage induction motor (IM) is selected in the electrical propulsion system. The IM is fed from three phase inverter operated by a constant V/F control method and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) algorithm. The proposed control strategy has been implemented on the texas instruments TM320F2812 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to generate SVPWM signal needed to trigger the gates of IGBT based inverter. The inverter used in this work is a three phase inverter IRAMY20UP60B type. The experimental results show the ability of the proposed control strategy to generate a three-phase sine wave signal with desired frequency. The proposed control strategy is experimented on a locally manufactured EV prototype. The results show that the EV prototype can be propelled to speed up to 60km/h under different road conditions.</span></p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" Abstract:
Abstract The reviewed book is an introductory course on engineering acoustics designed for undergraduates with basic knowledge in mathematics. It is not written clearly enough but in my opinion is it a handbook for students of electrical engineering. Some parts of the material require the knowledge of the basics of electricity and magnetism. Particularly, there are chapters about electromechanical and electroacoustical analogies and electroacoustical transducers. It is not clear whether the course is intended for students who plan to specialize in acoustics or for those for whom this will be the only contact with engineering acoustics. In the second case basic information about physiology and psychology of hearing is missing. The book is divided into 15 chapters. The Authors write that each chapter represents material for two hours of lecture. The 15th chapter does not present a material for a lecture. It contains appendices: basic information about complex notation for sinusoidal signals, power and intensity, supplementary bibliography for self-study and exercises. In my opinion the exercises have various levels of difficulty and should be solved under the direction of a teacher. They are a very important part of the entire course.

Abstract:
Introduction: Although electronic health records have been facilitating the management of medical information, there is still room for improvement in daily production of medical report. Possible areas for improvement would be: to improve reports quality (by increasing exhaustivity), to improve patients’ understanding (by mean of a graphical display), to save physicians’ time (by helping reports writing), and to improve sharing and storage (by enhancing interoperability). We set up the ICIPEMIR project (Improving the completeness, interoperability and patients explanation of medical imaging reports) as an academic solution to optimize medical imaging reports production. Such a project requires two layers: one engineering layer to build the automation process, and a second medical layer to determine domain-specific data models for each type of report. We describe here the medical layer of this project. Methods: We designed a reproducible methodology to identify -for a given medical imaging exam- mandatory fields, and describe a corresponding simple data model using validated formats. The mandatory fields had to meet legal requirements, domain-specific guidelines, and results of a bibliographic review on clinical studies. An UML representation, a JSON Schema, and a YAML instance dataset were defined. Based on this data model a form was created using Goupile, an open source eCRF script-based editor. In addition, a graphical display was designed and mapped with the data model, as well as a text template to automatically produce a free-text report. Finally, the YAML instance was encoded in a QR-Code to allow offline paper-based transmission of structured data. Results: We tested this methodology in a specific domain: computed tomography for urolithiasis. We successfully extracted 73 fields, and transformed them into a simple data model, with mapping to a simple graphical display, and textual report template. The offline QR-code transmission of a 2,615 characters YAML file was successful with simple smartphone QR-Code scanner. Conclusion: Although automated production of medical report requires domain-specific data model and mapping, these can be defined using a reproducible methodology. Hopefully this proof of concept will lead to a computer solution to optimize medical imaging reports, driven by academic research.

Abstract:
The authors have carried out extensive measurements of electron triboemission from the scratching of selected ceramics and of semiconductors in high vacuum. Although the origin of triboemission is not clear, the authors suggest that some triboemission features relate to worn surface evolution. A bibliographic review is presented on analysis of electron triboemission data. Time-domain and frequency-domain discussion of the burst-type triboemission outputs are presented. This paper briefly summarizes key findings on triboemission and presents measurements of electron triboemission from an alumina ball and a diamond cone scratching alumina and sapphire disks. An exploratory study is focused on frequency analysis of data. The feasibility of investigating randomness vs. deterministic origin is explored for the triboemission outputs. Because key triboemission features are yet to be explained, the proposed data analysis can be a tool for such understanding.

Abstract:
The need to adopt new cooling techniques arouse because of the continuous increase in power dissipation of electronic parts and systems. Due to the low thermal conductivity of classical liquids (water, alcohols, dielectric fluid, etc.), in many cases, the standard liquid cooling techniques cannot achieve the required cooling performances. This paper deals with power semi conductor devices (IGBT, MOSFET or diodes) cooling. The major problem of those power components is that they can easily dissipate several hundreds W.cm−2. Thus their cooling needs very high heat transfer coefficients. Therefore we introduce the use of liquid Ga alloys whose thermal conductivity (approx. 28Wm−1K−1) is 40 times greater than thermal conductivity of water. In this paper a numerical modeling and an experimental study of liquid metal mini channel coolers are presented. In the experimental cooling loop the working fluid (Ga alloy) is moved via an electromagnetic pump. The values of the convection coefficient obtained by the numerical model are compared with the correlations founded in the bibliography and the experimental data.
