As the fast development of nanotechnology and further industrial applications, theoretical investigations upon nanoscale devices are in urgent need. Until now several formalisms have been well established in quantum transport of mesoscopic areas, including of tight-binding and first principle calculations. In this dissertation those methods were partly explored to explore transport and thermoelectric features in various models and actual devices. The density functional theory plus non-equilibrium Green’s function serves well in the probing process of transport properties like conductance i

However, the corresponding values remain abnormally low at room temperature where a pronounced electronic excitation to the conduction band is observed simultaneously. This reduction of the mobility is attributed to the presence of deep centers that are electrically inactive at low temperatures but become excited when the temperature increases. Strongly correlated metals are known to give rise to a variety of exotic states. In particular, if a system is tuned towards a quantum critical point, new ordered phases may arise. In very pure single crystals of this material, a phase with unusual transport properties forms in the vicinity of its quantum critical point. Upon the application of a small in-plane field, electrical resistivity becomes anisotropic, a phenomenon which has led to the naming of this phase as an `electron nematic'. Th

Abstract:
High temperature properties such as electrical conductivity (σ) and resonance behaviour of stoichiometric lithium niobate (LiNbO3) are determined in the temperature range from 20 to 950 °C. The activation energy of the conductivity is found to be 0.9 and 1.7 eV in the temperature range from 500 to 750 °C and from 800 to 950 °C, respectively. During thermal treatments in ambient air up to 950 °C and back, the conductivity remains unchanged at a given temperature, i.e., the crystal is stable under these conditions. The oxygen partial pressure (pO2) dependence of the conductivity shows two disti

Abstract:
Layered Van der Waals solids, due to their highly anisotropic structure as well as their availability in mono, few and multi-layer form constitute a perfect playground, where a variety of possibility in structural variation as well as functionalities are expected. This potentially gives rise to a library of unique and fascinating 2D materials systems. These systems appear to demonstrate some spectacular variety of fundamental physics as well as indicate that some of these systems can be beneficial for several niche applications directly or indirectly resulting from their electrical and optic

In this thesis, in order to study the structural, optical and electrical transport properties of Tl2In2S3Se, TlInSeS and Tl2In2SSe3 crystals, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis (EDSA), transmission, reflection, photoluminescence (PL), thermally stimulated current (TSC) and photoconductivity decay (PC) measurements were carried out. Lattice parameters and atomic composition of these crystals were determined from XRD and EDSA experiments, respectively. By the help of transmission and reflection experiments, the room temperature absorption data were analyzed and it
