Abstract:
In recent years, electric two-wheelers are emerging as one of the alternatives to improve the sustainability of transportation energy and air quality, especially in urban areas. Although electric two-wheeler motorcycles are environmentally friendly, they underperform compared with gasoline two-wheelers in many respects, particularly in speed and cruise distance between refuelling and recharging. Therefore, the engine development program can be done with a dynamometer. Variables such as the shape of torque and power curves can be analyzed. Hence, this project is aimed to develop a chassis dynamometer that can be used to measure mechanical power, speed and torque, and provide a controllable load to the electric motorcycle being tested. The prototype of chassis dynamometer for electric motorcycle had been developed and performance of the chassis dynamometer was tested by using an electric bicycle to emulate the basic performance requirements of an electric motorcycle which consist of maximum speed, driving range and acceleration.

Abstract:
South East Asian cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Bangkok rely heavily on motorcycles. A huge number of urban residents depend on motorcycles for all types of activities such as working, ridehailing and delivery services, going to school or leisure. According to Malaysia Automotive Association (MMA) statistics, there are about 13 million registered motorcycles in Malaysia as of August 2017. The pollutants that a four-stroke-engine 50 cc motorcycle emits per kilometre are usually much higher than a 2-litre passenger car; 2.7 times higher for CO and 6.7 times higher for HC and NOX. Controlling excessive air pollution and emissions levels generated by the use of a motorcycle is one of the keys to improving air quality. Electric two-wheelers have been well adopted in Asia Pacific countries like China and Taiwan. This paper provides extensive review and analysis on development history, environmental and mobility impacts, challenge and limitation of electric two-wheelers from around the world and the potential of its emergence in Malaysia.

China In-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS) group collects accident data by on-scene investigate way in Changchun, Beijing, Weihai, Ningbo and Foshan. Based on the CIDAS data, this study analyzed the group characteristics and body injury distributions of the casualties in motorcycles, electric bicycles and bicycles. As a result, the mixed driving is the major environmental factor for cars to two-wheelers accidents, and most of such accidents happened in crossroads. Moreover, 16 to 65 years old two-wheelers injury users accounted for 62.0% of the total two-wheelers casualties.Within the two-wheelers injury users over 46 years old, users with AIS4 injuries occupied 22.4%. Besides, AIS4 bicycle injuries over 46 years old accounted for 47.6% of the total injury users over 46 years old. A similar injury parts distribution and AIS grade distribution in the same injury part were found among the casualties of motorcycles, electric bicycles and bicycles users.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper proposed a model for estimating waiting endurance times of electric two-wheelers at signalized intersections using survival analysis method. Waiting duration times were collected by video cameras and they were assigned as censored and uncensored data to distinguish between normal crossing and red-light running behavior. A Cox proportional hazard model was introduced, and variables revealing personal characteristics and traffic conditions were defined as covariates to describe the effects of internal and external factors. Empirical results show that riders do not want to wait too long to cross intersections. As signal waiting time increases, electric two-wheelers get impatient and violate the traffic signal. There are 12.8% of electric two-wheelers with negligible wait time. 25.0% of electric two-wheelers are generally nonrisk takers who can obey the traffic rules after waiting for 100 seconds. Half of electric two-wheelers cannot endure 49.0 seconds or longer at red-light phase. Red phase time, motor vehicle volume, and conformity behavior have important effects on riders’ waiting times. Waiting endurance times would decrease with the longer red-phase time, the lower traffic volume, or the bigger number of other riders who run against the red light. The proposed model may be applicable in the design, management and control of signalized intersections in other developing cities.

Abstract:
Regenerative Braking System is the latest frontier of research and study in electric vehicles. Big firms are investing a lot to incorporate this system in vehicles. We through our project have tried to broaden the area of study and implementation of Regenerative Braking system even in Electric Bikes. Regenerative Braking system has been incorporated in many four-wheelers but its presence in the zone of two-wheelers is still untouched, so we decided to make a move to contribute our learning and skills to explore in this untouched sector of two-wheelers. We have manufactured a model to test Regenerative Braking system in an electric bike and have made an attempt to prove it worth through our efforts.

Abstract:
Cities in the developing world are experiencing rapid motorization. In Asian cities, the fleets of two-wheelers are growing particularly fast, with electric bikes (e-bikes) driving much of that growth, especially in China, where more than 200 million e-bikes are on the roads. This study aimed to provide elements to further the understanding of the environmental implications of the fast growth of e-bikes by examining their energy efficiency, effect on local air quality, and greenhouse gas emissions. The findings show that e-bikes have a positive environmental performance, with high energy efficiency compared with other transport modes and benefits for public health as a result of zero tailpipe emissions. The findings need to be weighed by the fact that e-bikes have higher accident rates and are a strong competitor for public transport that could threaten the financial sustainability of public transport and reduce its ability to shape the urban form in a more sustainable way.

Abstract:
Electrification is widely considered as a viable strategy for reducing the oil dependency and environmental impacts of road transportation. In pursuit of this strategy, most attention has been paid to electric cars. However, substantial, yet untapped, potentials could be realized in urban areas through the large-scale introduction of electric two-wheelers. Here, we review the environmental, economic, and social performance of electric two-wheelers, demonstrating that these are generally more energy efficient and less polluting than conventionally-powered motor vehicles. Electric two-wheelers tend to decrease exposure to pollution as their environmental impacts largely result from vehicle production and electricity generation outside of urban areas. Our analysis suggests that the price of e-bikes has been decreasing at a learning rate of 8%. Despite price differentials of 5000 ± 1800 EUR2012 kW h−1 in Europe, e-bikes are penetrating the market because they appear to offer an apparent additional use value relative to bicycles. Mid-size and large electric two-wheelers do not offer such an additional use value compared to their conventional counterparts and constitute niche products at price differentials of 700 ± 360 EUR2012 kW−1 and 160 ± 90 EUR2012 kW−1, respectively. The large-scale adoption of electric two-wheelers can reduce traffic noise and road congestion but may necessitate adaptations of urban infrastructure and safety regulations. A case-specific assessment as part of an integrated urban mobility planning that accounts, e.g., for the local electricity mix, infrastructure characteristics, and mode-shift behavior, should be conducted before drawing conclusions about the sustainability impacts of electric two-wheelers.

Abstract:
The process of conceptualizing innovative designs is multifaceted and inherently difficult to perform successfully. It is largely characterized by the designer’s capability to find solutions to design problems beyond existing norms. General agreement suggests this process should entail a holistic approach for conceiving new ideas, which are expanded, assessed, developed, refined, and implemented as part of an iterative problem solving cycle. Suitable design procedures and skills are therefore vital as most of the final cost of a product or system is committed within the early conceptualization stage. This paper builds on engineering design techniques previously developed by the author, namely the Design Process Framework in conjunction with the Concept Assessment Taxonomy (CAT) at the heart of concept development [1]. The main emphasis of the work presented herein is the application of said framework to a new design challenge in order to further test and demonstrate its practicality in a real world context: the conceptual development of an innovative, modular, hybrid-electric powertrain for two-wheelers.
