Abstract:
In The Soundscape, R. Murray Schafer describes a tone of ‘prime unity’, a tonal centre conditioning an international sonic unconscious. Diverging from the bucolic image of nature readily associated with Schafer’s ethics and aesthetics, this tone is found in the ubiquitous hum of electrical infrastructure and appliances. A utopian potential is ascribed to this tone in Schafer’s writing whereby it constitutes the conditions for a unified international acoustic community of listening subjects. This article outlines Schafer’s anomalous concept of the tone of prime unity and interrogates the contradictions it introduces into Schafer’s project of utopian soundscape design. Discussion of the correspondence between Schafer and Marshall McLuhan contextualises and identifies the source of Schafer’s concept of the tone of prime unity. Of particular interest is the processes of unconscious auditory influence this concept entails and its problematic relation to the politics of sonic warfare. Through discussion of contemporary artistic practices that engage with these problems, it is argued that the tone of prime unity nonetheless presents an opportunity to shift the focus of Schafer’s project from a telos of divine harmony towards collective self-determination through participatory intervention in the world around us.

Abstract:
One hundred years after their discovery, we meet liquid crystals everywhere in our daily life. Their most widely known application is the liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in watches, pocket calculators, or gasoline pumps. Applications aside, liquid crystals show many exciting properties, making them highly interesting for fundamental research. For example, electrohydrodynamic convection (EHC) in nematic liquid crystals, which is studied in cells of a configuration similar to liquid crystal displays, serves with its characteristic properties as a model System for investigating central questions of pattern formation and chaos.Today's liquid crystal displays work on the principle described in 1971 by Martin Schadt and Wolfgang Helfrich (Figure 1). In nematic liquid crystals, organic molecules orient on average along a macroscopic direction, described by the director field n(r), that has neither head nor tail (n = −n). Nematics are therefore anisotropic and for energetic reasons, n(r) orients parallel (perpendicular) to an electric field when the dielectric permittivity (ε∥) along n is larger (smaller) than the perpendicular (ε⊦ one. For positive εa = ε∥ − ε⊦, when an electric field is applied perpendicular to the direction of n, a reorientation of n takes place together with a corresponding change in the optical property of the cell. The controlled change by an electric field in the optic axis (orientation) in well-defined areas of the display then allows the representation of numbers, etc.

Abstract:
Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) arose out of research into cognitive science, most prominently that of Roger Schank and his students at Yale University, during the period 1977–1993. CBR may be defined as a model of reasoning that incorporates problem solving, understanding, and learning, and integrates all of them with memory processes. It focuses on the human problem solving approach such as how people learn new skills and generates solutions about new situations based on their past experience. Similar mechanisms to humans who intelligently adapt their experience for learning, CBR replicates the processes by considering experiences as a set of old cases and problems to be solved as new cases. To arrive at the conclusions, it uses four types of processes, which are retrieve, reuse, revise, and retain. These processes involve some basic tasks such as clustering and classification of cases, case selection and generation, case indexing and learning, measuring case similarity, case retrieval and inference, reasoning, rule adaptation, and mining to generate the solutions. This chapter provides the basic idea of case-based reasoning and a few typical applications. The chapter, which is unique in character, will be useful to researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, system science, and information technology. Researchers and practitioners in industry and R&D laboratories working in such fields as system design, control, pattern recognition, data mining, vision, and machine intelligence will benefit.

Abstract:
The QUENCH experimental programme at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) investigates phenomena associated with reflood of a degrading core under postulated severe accident conditions, but where the geometry is still mainly rod-like and degradation is still at an early phase. The QUENCH test bundle is electrically heated and consists of 21 fuel rod simulators with a total length of approximately 2.5 m. The cladding and grid spacers are identical to those used in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) whereas the fuel is represented by ZrO2 pellets. Experiment QUENCH-14 was successfully performed at FZK in July 2008 and is the first in this programme where Zr-Nb alloy M5® is used as the fuel rod simulator cladding. QUENCH-14 was otherwise essentially the same as experiment QUENCH-06, which was the subject of the CSNI ISP-45 exercise. It is also the first of three experiments in the QUENCH-ACM series, recently launched to examine the effect of advanced cladding materials on oxidation and quenching under otherwise similar conditions. Pre- and post-test analyses were performed at PSI using a local version of SCDAP/RELAP5 and MELCOR 1.8.6, using input models which had already been benchmarked against QUENCH-06 data. Preliminary pre-test calculations with both codes and alternative correlations for the oxidation kinetics indicated that the planned test protocol would achieve the desired objective of exhibiting whatever effects might arise from the change in cladding-material in the course of a transient similar to QUENCH-06. Several correlations were implemented in the models, namely Cathcart-Pawel, Urbanic-Heidrick, Leistikow-Schanz and Prater-Courtright for Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4), and additionally a new candidate correlation for M5® based on recent separate-effects tests performed at FZK on M5® cladding samples. Analyses of the QUENCH-14 data demonstrate strengths and limitations of the various models. Some tentative recommendations are made concerning choice of correlation and effect of cladding material.

Abstract:
Parabolic trough power plants are currently the most commercially applied systems for CSP power generation. To improve their cost-effectiveness, one focus of industry and research is the development of processes with other heat transfer fluids than the currently used synthetic oil. One option is the utilization of water/steam in the solar field, the so-called direct steam generation (DSG). Several previous studies promoted the economic potential of DSG technology [1–3]. Analyses’ results showed that live steam parameters of up to 500°C and 120 bars are most promising and could lead to a reduction of the levelized electricity cost (LEC) of about 11% [4]. However, all of these studies only considered plants without thermal energy storage (TES). Therefore, a system analysis including integrated TES was performed by Flagsol GmbH and DLR together with Solar Millennium AG, Schott CSP GmbH and Senior Bergho¨fer GmbH, all Germany. Two types of plants are analyzed and compared in detail: a power plant with synthetic oil and a DSG power plant. The design of the synthetic oil plant is very similar to the Spanish Andasol plants [5] and includes a molten salt two-tank storage system. The DSG plant has main steam parameters of 500 °C and 112 bars and uses phase change material (PCM) for the latent and molten salt for the sensible part of the TES system. To enable comparability, both plants share the same gross electric turbine capacity of 100 MWel, the same TES capacity of nine hours of full load equivalent and the same solar multiple of the collector field of about two. This paper describes and compares both plants’ design, performance and investment. Based on these results, the LEC are calculated and the DSG plant’s potential is evaluated. One key finding is that with currently proposed DSG storage costs, the LEC of a DSG plant could be higher than those of a synthetic oil plant. When considering a plant without TES on the other hand, the DSG system could reduce the LEC. This underlines the large influence of TES and the still needed effort in the development of a commercial storage system for DSG.
