Abstract:
Nuclear Electric (NE) currently operates the 11 nuclear power stations in England and Wales, generating 61 TWh of electricity in 93/94, constituting over 23% of the Country's electricity consumption. The company is also decommissioning 2 nuclear power station, Berkeley and Trawsfynydd, and is progressing commissioning of the PWR station at Sizewell to time and cost. NE was formed in 1990 following the re-organisation of the UK electricity industry, taking over all the nuclear stations previously operated by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). The company competes in the UK electricity market with the privatised generators National Power and Powergen who inherited the fossil fuelled stations of the CEGB. This paper outlines the nature of Nuclear Electric's existing environmental management systems, considers the implications of the adoption of a company environmental policy and looks at the exercise currently under way to incorporate the requirements of the policy into current management practices using BS7750 as a vehicle.

Abstract:
Electricité de France produces about 75% of its electricity with nuclear power plants. Some hydraulic plants and most fossil fuel power plants are used to pass electricity consumption peaks. Therefore these facilities are required only intermittently. For such systems, a breakdown does not result in a production loss during a standby period. This particular feature is not taken into account by conventional availability evaluation methods. The objective of this paper is to introduce a definition of availability which holds in such a context, and to describe a mathematical method suited to the calculation of this new definition of availability.

Abstract:
Like other cities, Bordeaux discovered the phenomenon of electricity by the end of the nineteenth century and tamed it during the first third of the twentieth century. Here, as elsewhere, one could follow the stages in the diffusion of the uses of electricity. But tackling the history of the electricity industry in Bordeaux means, perhaps more than elsewhere, getting involved with the evolution of the governing bodies which have dominated the process of electrification. Indeed, Bordeaux presents the case, very rare in France of a town which has known several juridical changes in the development of generation and distribution of electricity. From the start, until 1919, the construction of the network and its exploitation were taken care of by private companies. At this date, the Council appropriated the means of production and of distribution of electricity; the authority which was created then remained in existence beyond the general nationalisation of 1946, until 1956, when the city entrusted its electricity supply to the national company Electricité de France (EDF). How can these statutory changes be explained? We shall see that they can primarily be accounted for by shortcomings in the supply, whoever the operator may have been at the time. Indeed, in this field, supply first created demand and thus engendered the first faltering attempts in electricity. But, then, on several occasions, the electric power supply hit financial and technical snags. The change of juridical status then appeared as the solution to the people in charge.

Abstract:
Abstract. Temperature influences both the demand and supply of electricity and is therefore a potential cause of blackouts. Like any electricity provider, Electricité de France (EDF) has strong incentives to model the uncertainty in future temperatures using ensemble prediction systems (EPSs). However, the probabilistic representations of the future temperatures provided by EPSs are not reliable enough for electricity generation management. This lack of reliability becomes crucial for extreme temperatures, as these extreme temperatures can result in blackouts. A proven method to solve this problem is the best member method (BMM). This method improves the representation as a whole, but there is still room for improvement in the tails of the distribution. The idea of the BMM is to model the probability distribution of the difference between the forecast and realization. We improve the error modeling in BMM using quantile regression, which is more efficient than the usual two-stage ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. To achieve further improvement, the probability that a given forecast is the best one can be modeled using exogenous variables.

Abstract:
Ocular trauma is the under-recognized cause of unilateral blindness particularly in developing nations. The growing demand on generated electricity has also led to increase in electricity related occupational trauma. We report a case of bilateral cataract in a 22 years professional electrician. He survived a high voltage electric shock and sustained burn injury on the right side of his head. Ocular examination revealed typical anterior as well as posterior subcapsular cataract in right eye and visually insignificant early anterior subcapsular vacuoles in the left eye. There was a significant difference in lenticular opacification density in between these two eyes. Uneventful phacoemulsification and foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was performed in the right eye and the sufferer was rehabilitated with normal best corrected visual acuity. The possibility of ocular complications and importance of ocular screening is emphasized in the survivors of electrical injury. The lenticular opacities can be successfully managed with surgery, however the final visual acuity depends on damage to other vital ocular structures. The clinical features, pathogenic mechanism of these opacities and review of the literatures are discussed.

Abstract:
Morphologically motivated spellings in English are usually thought to be restricted to cases like 〈electric – electrician – electricity〉, where the stem final letter 〈c〉 is kept constant in spelling although the corresponding phoneme varies in spoken language. However, there are many more – and fundamentally different – spellings that refer to morphological information. We will show this by systematically going through the three major parts of morphology: inflection, derivation, and compounding. In each area, we will identify spellings that can best be explained with reference to morphology. As a result, we will present an overview of formal and functional means of morphological spellings which goes far beyond the ubiquitous example cited above. Abstract:
Abstract. The PEACH project (Projet en Electricité Atmosphérique pour la Campagne HyMeX – the Atmospheric Electricity Project of the HyMeX Program) is the atmospheric electricity component of the Hydrology cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX) experiment and is dedicated to the observation of both lightning activity and electrical state of continental and maritime thunderstorms in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. During the HyMeX SOP1 (Special Observation Period) from 5 September to 6 November 2012, four European operational lightning locating systems (ATDnet, EUCLID, LINET, ZEUS) and the HyMeX lightning mapping array network (HyLMA) were used to locate and characterize the lightning activity over the northwestern Mediterranean at flash, storm and regional scales. Additional research instruments like slow antennas, video cameras, microbarometer and microphone arrays were also operated. All these observations in conjunction with operational/research ground-based and airborne radars, rain gauges and in situ microphysical records are aimed at characterizing and understanding electrically active and highly precipitating events over southeastern France that often lead to severe flash floods. Simulations performed with cloud resolving models like Meso-NH and Weather Research and Forecasting are used to interpret the results and to investigate further the links between dynamics, microphysics, electrification and lightning occurrence. Herein we present an overview of the PEACH project and its different instruments. Examples are discussed to illustrate the comprehensive and unique lightning data set, from radio frequency to acoustics, collected during the SOP1 for lightning phenomenology understanding, instrumentation validation, storm characterization and modeling.

Abstract:
The electricity market has experienced significant changes towards deregulation with the aim of improving economic efficiency. The electricity pricing is a major consideration for consumers and generation companies in deregulated electric markets, so that offering the right price for electricity has become more important. Various methods and ideas have been tried for electricity price forecasting. Artificial neural networks have received much attention with its nonlinear property and many papers have reported successful experiments with them. This paper introduces artificial neural network models for day-ahead electricity market in Turkey. Using gradient descent, gradient descent with momentum, Broydan, Fletcher, Goldfarb and Shanno (BFGS) and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with different number of neuron and transfer functions, 400 different models are created. Performances of different models are compared according to their Mean Absolute Percentage (MAPE) values; the most successful models MAPE value is observed as 9.76%.
