The current hydraulic torque converter has many drawbacks. It requires a significant amount of oil to drive the impeller, and the turbine, which may cause a loss of energy. There is a strong need to develop a mechanical method to apply external torque to the bacterial flagellar motor. Such a method will allow us to probe the behaviour of the motor at a range of different speeds under different external conditions. The design consists of four stator disks with each adjacent disk rotated 30 degrees apart and four rotor disks connected to a common shaft.
