Martin, Colin J. Interaction of ionizing radiations with matter. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199655212.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Interactions of ionizing radiations with matter are fundamental to the practice of radiation protection. They determine the magnitude and distribution of doses in tissues, the performance of detectors and imaging devices, and the attenuating properties of shielding materials. This chapter describes briefly the processes of radioactive decay and the properties of the various particles emitted, and then goes on to consider the interactions of radiation with matter. Electron interactions with metals result in bremsstrahlung and characteristic X-rays that form the basis of X-ray production. The interaction mechanisms of X-rays with tissue, particularly the photoelectric effect and Compton scattering, are inherent in the process of radiology image formation. Understanding the physics behind X-ray interactions so that scattered radiation can be taken into account is crucial in designing methods for accurately measuring radiation dose parameters. The final section deals with the dose related variables involved in measurement of radiation fields.

Abstract:
Principles of radiation oncology outlines the physical and biological effects of ionising radiation, and its use in clinical oncology. Radiobiology, examining the response of tissue to ionising radiation, is described with regards to normal and malignant tissues. The effect of fractionation, the delivery of radiotherapy in a series of repeated exposures, is examined. The damaging effects on normal tissues are considered, particularly nonreversible late effects including carcinogenesis. Therapeutic exposure to ionising radiation is contrasted between radical and palliative radiotherapy. The physical properties of ionising radiation beams are described for superficial x-rays, megavoltage x-rays, and electrons. The process of treatment planning is summarised through beam dosimetry, target and critical organ outlining, dose planning, treatment verification, prescription and delivery. Computerised tomography is used for outlining and for verification, using cone beam CT. 0ther methods for image guided radiotherapy include fiducial markers. Increasingly intensity modulated radiotherapy is proving beneficial in reducing normal tissue damage during radical treatment. Stereotactic radiotherapy is used in the radical treatment of small unresectable malignancies. The clinical use of electron therapy, brachytherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy is described. Nuclear medicine uses unsealed radionuclides in imaging primary malignancies and their metastases, and in targeted radiotherapy. Examples include PET scanning, bone scanning, and radio iodine therapy. Whole body irradiation is used to improve outcomes after high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell or bone marrow transplantation.

Abstract:
The discussion on how technology can be applied to improve the integrity and transparency of elections often focuses on complex and expensive technologies such as biometrics, electronic voting and voter identification systems. Something unfortunately mentioned far less often is the potential to apply technology in a way that is not only much cheaper, but also arguably more efficient—the use of online tools that provide access to elections-related information based on open data principles. is indeed unfortunate as the absence of at least rudimentary open data approaches in elections can undo and even reverse the integrity gains brought about by other technologies and measures.
