We investigate the conditions under which electron irradiation of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundles with 2 keV electrons produces an increase in the Raman D peak. We find that an increase in the D peak does not occur when SWCNTs are preheated in situ at 600 C for 1 h in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) before irradiation is performed. The effect of electron beam irradiation upon microbiological quality and safety of fresh-cut tomatoes was studied. Preliminary studies were conducted to ensure reliability of the rifampicin-resistant strain versus the parent strain of Salmonella serovar Montevideo for use in this study. Growth curve, heat tolerance and lactic acid resistance studies were performed, all of which showed no differences in behavior between the organisms. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have extraordinary properties, such as exceptional strength, which are derived from their unique structure. However, the weak Van der Waals (VdW) interactions between adjacent CNTs produce bundled axial properties significantly lower than isolated nanotubes. The VdW interactions lead to low shear strength in bundles which significantly reduces the commercial application of CNTs. The impact of the VdW interactions can be overcome and shear strength improved via irradiation-induced intertube bonds. However, irradiation also produces non beneficial modifications to nanotube
