Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extraordinary mechanical and electrical properties. Together with their small dimensions and low density, they are attractive candidates for building blocks in future nanoelectromechanical systems and for many other applications. The extraordinary properties are however only attained by perfectly crystalline CNTs and quickly deteriorate when defects are introduced to the structure. The growth technique affects the crystallinity where in general CNTs grown by arc-discharge are close to perfectly crystalline, while CVD-grown CNTs have large defect densities.

Only a few methods are currently available for the measurement of sample thicknesses in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). These methods, Convergent-Beam Electron Diffraction (CBED) and thickness mapping in Energy-Filtered TEM (EFTEM), are either elaborate or complex. In this present work, I have investigated and come up with a simple straight-forward method to measure the local thickness of a TEM sample with the atomic number (Z-contrast) imaging using High-Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). HAADF STEM shows atomic number contrast for high

Abstract:
The objective of my work was to develop HDPE clay nanocomposites for packaging with superior barrier (gas and water) properties by economical processing technique. This work also represents a comparative study of thermoplastic nanocomposites for packaging based on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and Nylon12. In this study properties and processing of a series of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and Nylon 12 nanocomposites based on Na-MMT clay and two different aspect ratio grades of kaolinite clay are discussed.

We employ the empirical potential function Airebo to computationally model free-standing Carbon-12 graphene in a classical setting. Our objective is to measure the mean square displacement (MSD) of atoms in the system for different average temperatures and Carbon-13 isotope concentrations. From results of the MSD we aim to develop a technique that employs Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), using high-angle annular dark filed (HAADF) detection, to obtain atomic-resolution images. From the thermally diffusive images, produced by the vibrations of atoms, we intent to resolve isotopes types i

The interwall spacing of multi-walled carbon nanotubes has an effect on their physical and chemical properties. Tubes with larger interwall spacing - compared to the spacing where the carbon atoms are in their natural distance to each other - are for instance expected to be mechanically less stable. Considering the MWCNT interwall spacing’s dependence on the tube size, three interesting previous studies with slightly different conclusions can be found. All of them conclude an increase of the interwall spacing with a decreasing tube size. We describe their analysis procedure, compare them to ea

Cilia and flagella are cellular organelles involved in several and crucial aspects for the cell, tissue and organs normal physiology. Cilia can be classified according to their ability to perform a movement or not. Eukaryotic unicellular organisms and particular cells of mostly evolved organisms, i. e. spermatozoa, have evolved motile cilia for the cell propulsion in liquid media. Ciliated epithelia direct the movement of fluids by the ciliary beating. The primary cilium is an immotile cilium present in all the so far studied metazoan. This organelle is ubiquitous in human somatic cells when t

This report introduces the multislice method for modeling the interaction between an electron and the atoms in the specimen (electron-specimen interaction). The multislice method is an approximation to the full quantum mechanical model for this interaction. After introducing the theory, we discuss how the multislice method is implemented and integrated into TEM-simulator, a software for simulation of Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) images.

Recently, the rate of corrosion of copper water pipes in Bowling Green, Kentucky has unexpectedly accelerated. The specific reasons for this are unknown. Our aim is to elucidate the factors enhancing the corrosion and help understand the primary mechanisms of action. This will help in combating and reducing future corrosion incidents leading to pipe failure, thus reducing losses experienced when these pipes are replaced. This study seeks to explore the characteristics and factors involved. The scanning electron microscopy was used to obtain elemental composition, and images of both inside and
