Parker, Greg. "Robust processing of diffusion weighted image data." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/61622/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis comprises a proposed robust diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) pipeline, each chapter detailing a step designed to ultimately transform raw DW-MRI data into segmented bundles of coherent fibre ready for more complex analysis or manipulation. In addition to this pipeline we will also demonstrate, where appropriate, ways in which each step could be optimized for the maxillofacial region, setting the groundwork for a wider maxillofacial modelling project intended to aid surgical planning. Our contribution begins with RESDORE, an algorithm desi

Abstract:
The emerging technology of mobile devices and cloud computing has brought a new and efficient way for data to be collected, processed and stored by mobile users. With improved specifications of mobile devices and various mobile applications provided by cloud servers, mobile users can enjoy tremendous advantages to manage their daily life through those applications instantaneously, conveniently and productively. However, using such applications may lead to the exposure of user data to unauthorised access when the data is outsourced for processing and storing purposes. Furthermore, such a settin

Abstract:
These days, the world is becoming more interconnected, and the Internet has dominated the ways to communicate or to do business. Network security measures must be taken to protect the organization environment. Among these security measures are the intrusion detection systems. These systems aim to detect the actions that attempt to compromise the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of a resource by monitoring the events occurring in computer systems and/or networks. The increasing amounts of data that are transmitted at higher and higher speed networks created a challenging problem for

Abstract:
This research investigates Examination Timetabling or Scheduling, with the aim of producing good quality, feasible timetables that satisfy hard constraints and various soft constraints. A novel approach to scheduling, that of transformation of the problem space, has been developed and evaluated for its effectiveness. The examination scheduling problem involves many constraints due to many relationships between students and exams, making it complex and expensive in terms of time and resources. Despite the extensive research in this area, it has been observed that most of the published methods d

Abstract:
The Web of Data extends the World Wide Web (WWW) in a way that applications can understand information and cooperate with humans on complex tasks. The basis of performing complex tasks is low latency queries over the Web of Data. The large scale and distributed nature of the Web of Data have negative impacts on several critical factors for efficient query processing, including fast data transmission between datasets, predictable data distribution and statistics that summarise and describe certain patterns in the data. Moreover, it is common on the Web of Data that the same resource is identifi

Abstract:
Clusters of workstations are becoming increasingly popular as a low-budget alternative for supercomputing power. In these systems,message-passing is often used to allow the separate nodes to act as a single computing machine. Programmers of such systems face a daunting challenge in understanding the performance bottlenecks of their applications. This is largely due to the vast amount of performance data that is collected, and the time and expertise necessary to use traditional parallel performance tools to analyze that data. The goal of this project is to increase the level of performance tool

Abstract:
Geometric hierarchies have proven useful for the problems of point location in planar subdivisions and 2- and 3-dimensional convex polytope separation on a sequential model of computation. In this thesis, we formulate a geometric hierarchy paradigm (following the work of Dobkin and Kirkpatrick) and apply this paradigm to solve a number of computational geometry problems on a shared memory (PRAM) parallel model of computation. For certain problems, we describe what we call cooperative algorithms, algorithms which exploit parallelism in searching geometric hierarchies to solve their respective p
