Nabbosa, Racheal. "Assessing the use of journals and formats preferred by postgraduate students of Makerere University." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/62107.

Abstract:
Academic libraries are focused towards effective information provision that is necessary for teaching, learning and research. Makerere University Library (Maklib) is no exception as it has strategies towards effective provision of information resources. Journals are some of the resources that are provided by the library to support teaching, learning and research and they are provided in two formats: namely, the electronic format and the print format. This research attempted to investigate whether postgraduate students use these journals and the formats they prefer to access. Research was conducted involving 114 postgraduate students using questionnaires as the data collection tool. Qualitative data was collected, analysed using Google Forms and presented in graphs, tables and text. Findings revealed that most postgraduate students are aware of the existence of journals provided by the library although some expressed a lack of awareness. Further still they use the journals provided and most of them have preference for the electronic format of journals. However it was also revealed that access was hindered by several factors such as long procedures to access the library. Recommendations that need to be adopted by Maklib are also discussed such as increasing on awareness campaigns, continuous training of students and staff and providing the necessary infrastructure to enhance access to the journals.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to answer the question: How does the Online Trombone Journal address the issues of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in the publishing of an electronic journal?Documents from the Online Trombone Journal were examined in order to discover what specific methods are in place addressing credibility. Issues of prominent brass-related print journals were examined in order to locate article citations. Interviews were conducted with authors who are published in both an established print journal and the Online Trombone Journal. The Online Trombone Journal was searched for in both standard print indices and also on-line search engines in order to determine accessibility. To investigate permanence, on-line documents at the Online Trombone Journal concerning archiving were investigated, and an interview conducted with the publisher. The existence of a Review Board at the Online Trombone Journal, as well as standard guidelines for the review process indicates that credibility is addressed through peer-review of articles. Research showed that articles in the Online Trombone Journal have not yet begun to appear in other scholarly resources. In the area of accessibility, the content of the Online Trombone Journal is not yet indexed in standard music indices. The Online Trombone Journal does rank very high in searches using the term "trombone" on Internet search engines.Addressing permanence, research shows that apart from visiting the Online Trombone Journal web site, there is no other method for accessing its content. Thepublisher of the Online Trombone Journal indicates that a CD-ROM of all articles will be published and distributed to libraries and collection agencies in order to address the issue of permanence. The Online Trombone Journal has done an effective job of addressing the concerns of credibility and accessibility in on-line journal publishing. Permanence, an ongoing concern for all a journals, is a concern to the publisher, and will be addressed in the near future.

Simpson, Annette. "Towards the design of an electronic journal." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1990. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13725.

Full text
Abstract:
The main focus of this thesis is on the design of an electronic academic journal. The thesis commences with an examination of the way in which the paper-based journal system is used, in order to identify its associated problems, which may be alleviated through the use of the electronic medium, and those features which should be retained in an electronic journal system The use of location as an incidental navigation cue by readers of both paper and electronic documents is explored. It is concluded that, although of significant benefit, certain types of location cues are lost in the electronic medium, and other navigation aids must therefore be found. Although it may be possible to imitate paper documents on screen, there are several arguments against such an approach. Hypertext systems enable the capabilities of the electronic medium to be more fuIly exploited, and make it possible to use alternative document structures, but these may present problems for readers. The major difficulty would appear to be that, due to the flexible access which hypertext permits, readers get lost. A series of studies was therefore conducted examining the utility of various facilities in assisting readers to navigate through a hypertext document. A number of features were identified which helped readers to relocate information from within the hypertext, and it would appear that the same facilities were of benefit for both hierarchical and web structured documents. It was also found that navigation efficiency was positively correlated with the ability to construct an accurate map of the document's structure. In the final study, a database of journal articles containing the facilities derived from the previous studies was constructed, and performance in an essay-question type task was compared using two interfaces to the database. The frrst was a chronological list of the articles in the database, and the second contained the same navigation facilities as the individual articles. Objective and subjective performance measures both pointed to the superiority of the second type of interface, and these findings are discussed in the context of future electronic journal systems.

Hitchcock, Stephen Meirion. "Perspectives in electronic publishing : experiments with a new electronic journal model." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2002. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/258233/.

Abstract:
The Internet and subsequently the World Wide Web made it possible for individual authors and new, independently-produced electronic publications to reach vastly greater numbers of readers than had previously been possible. The proliferation of electronic versions of commercial print journals that followed, however, has so far done little to alter the formal structures, character and culture of scholarly journals from the user’s perspective. The Web also represents the first large-scale use of a hypertext system, but hypertext developers have been disdainful of it as a limited implementation of other models. In turn, a criticism of some hypertext systems is that they have been too focused on system performance rather than the needs of users. This thesis examines the contention that augmenting the Web with a hypertext linking service will support the development of a new type of interconnected journal that allows users to explore individual lines of enquiry more efficiently. In this case the ‘journal’ frames a user-centric information environment, where selected documents can be distributed and accessed anywhere on the Web. Editorially-added links act as the binding between the resources selected for inclusion, and the selection and commentary on documents exercise the journal’s editorial ‘voice’. A ‘journal’ based on this model was built and subjected to extensive evaluation by a targetted specialist group. In a series of tests these users were invited to offer their views on this and more general journal models; because this was not a hypothetical model their responses could be cross-checked against the results of their experiences of using the new journal model. Thus, users could not hide their true preferences. Although small in number, the target evaluation group provided strong reactions both for and against the model, revealing some of the challenges that radical new electronic journal models face if the structure of the traditional printed journal is to be displaced in favour of journals that can properly exploit the prospect of fully interconnected and accessible networked distribution.

This item is not the definitive copy. Please use the following citation when referencing this material: McKnight, C., Dillon, A. and Shackel, B. (1996) The electronic journal and its implications for the digital library. In T. Harrison and T. Stephens (eds.) Computer Networking and Scholarly Communication in the 21st Century. NY: SUNY Press, 351-368. 1. INTRODUCTION: It is now over ten years since the first electronic journal experiments (e.g., EIES, BLEND) and the intervening years have not seen researchers being idle in this field. Indeed, while experiments have continued apace in an attempt to answer various questions such as the appropriateness of particular interfaces, electronic journals have continued to appear. The third edition of the ARL list (Okerson, 1993) contains 45 electronic journals while the first edition, only two years earlier (Okerson, 1991), listed only 27. This might suggest reasonably rapid growth but in actual fact represents a high rate of turnover also -- 16 of the original 27 do not appear in the latest list. We therefore start this chapter from the assumption that electronic journals will continue to be a feature of the scholarly communication process, although not all will survive. Our second assumption arises from our experiences in the design, implementation and evaluation of information technology based systems in general, not just electronic journals. That is, we assume that in order to be acceptable, any system attempting to replace an existing technology must enable users to perform their necessary tasks in a way which is at least as easy as the existing system. The new system must offer at least as much (and preferably more) than the existing system, otherwise motivation to move from the old to the new is not high. In the present context, this means that the successful electronic journals will be those which not only support the scholarly communication process and all the other user requirements satisfied by paper based journals, but also support additional, enhanced facilities such as tailorable presentation formats, integrated interactive discussion about articles, flexible indexing and retrieval, hypertext linking and so forth.

Abstract:
A distinction can be made between the electronic journal and a hypertext or hypermedia journal (throughout the rest of this paper the terms e-journal and h-journal will be used) that categorizes them as belonging to two different stages in the evolution of electronic documents [1 ]. While the e-journal contains unstructured text and mimics the print model of journal publication, the h-journal builds upon both. It contains structured text, hypertext, and incorporates notions of user centrality to document creation acknowledging thereby that certain kinds of electronic documents can also function as information systems.

Abstract:
As journal publishing continues to evolve, the access policies of publishers become more differentiated. The open access movement has been an important catalyst for change in this regard, prodding publishers to reexamine their access policies and, in some cases, to move towards new access models. To fully understand where things stand with journal access policies, we need to clarify and name the policies in use. This paper attempts to provide a first-cut model for key journal access policies, adopting the now popular use of colors as a second form of shorthand for identifying the policy types.

Abstract:
This study identifies how an electronic journal can be established and implemented in the textile and apparel field. The study considers, Journal of Textile & Apparel Technology & Management as an innovation in the textile and apparel field, and analyzes electronic media as a way of disseminating information to scholarly and industrial communities in a better way. This study documented the process of establishing the electronic journal, and also provides the importance of a feedback loop to provide inputs for future journals. The readership behavior of the journal, including unique visits, repetitive visits, hits (page impressions), geographic location of the readers/visitors, entry page, was examined with the help of log files collected from College of Textiles and Sitestats, a UK based company. Issue analysis (volume 1, issues 1-4, volume 2, issue 1) was compared with previous issues and the results were related to Rogers? Model of the Innovation-Decision process (1995) and proved that JTATM is an innovation in the textile and apparel field.

Abstract:

Electronic publication brings a wide range of questions regarding how our lives will change. An area of great change has been electronic scholarly publication. One question this change has brought about is how we can prepare undergraduates as professionals prepared to meet this challenge. To this end, in 1996 I and the Center for Communication in Science, Technology, and Research began a two-year experimental online journal to publish "excellent" undergraduate research: the NCSU Student Researcher. Our goals were to introduce undergraduates from across the NC State campus to the challenges of electronic publication, to reward and enhance their class research by publishing their class papers, to highlight excellent NC State student writing across campus and beyond, and to explore electronic participation and presentation. The "peer" review procedure involved two faculty nominating the paper as "excellent" undergraduate research. We received a great deal of enthusiastic interest and input from many students and faculty, yet ultimately the Researcher received only two submissions. This thesis, the final report for the project, explores factors affecting student and faculty participation. Three different approaches to audience analysis were practiced in designing the journal (Schriver, Dynamics in Document Design, 1997): intuition-driven, classification-driven, and feedback-driven. The design process provides excellent examples of strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, and the superior approach of feedback-driven audience analysis, which was applied via systems analysis (Senge, The Fifth Discipline, 1990). The use of Senge's systems analysis as a form of audience analysis was a crucial contribution to understanding the journal's outcome. This thesis also discusses the dynamic model of scholarly communication uncovered by systems analysis. Rather than a linear process beginning with author and ending with reader, as found in the scholarly literature on scholarly publication, journals and other document series exist within an "interactive communication environment," not as single documents with a relatively distinct beginning and end, but a planned, dynamic series of documents that relies on its audience for input in order to survive. Feedback-driven audience analysis as practiced by systems analysis is particularly appropriate for analyzing audiences for such environments, which include periodicals, listservs, and chatrooms, as well as planned revisions based on audience feedback. Gathering feedback from the audience throughout the course of designing such an environment is critical if the environment depends on that audience for its survival. Systems analysis/feedback-driven audience analysis ultimately pinpointed the source of the Student Researcher's failure. The model of scholarly publication applied in the early design stages, derived by intuition- and classification-driven audience analysis, focused on authors (students) as the source of journal submissions. This conflicted with the mindset of faculty and students, because many conceived of no "disciplinary space" in which undergraduate publication is appropriate ("undergraduates are not authors"). Also, Writing Across the Curriculum initiative at NC State had caused most faculty to rethink what they considered "excellent" undergraduate writing, so publicly nominating a paper as "excellent" at that time was problematic. Systems analysis identified faculty, rather than the students, as the motivators in the publication process and thus the appropriate target for marketing and audience feedback. Because I did not seek systematic faculty and student input throughout the journal design process, I was unaware of the effect of the WAC initiative, and unaware that most faculty did not believe undergraduate publication per se was worth their effort. Because I focused on the students and not the faculty in marketing the journal, I had not invited broad faculty input in the design of the journal, a design that may have departed from the standard scholarly model in order for them to perceive it as appropriate for their students.

Abstract:
In the past years, scientific communication has been through changes generated by information technologies and communication, specially Internet and its graphical interface, the Web. The scientific journal, as a main formal means of communication, has not been immune to those changes, expressed through its availability whithin the electronic field. In this context, this research analyzes the periodic acceptance and use of electronic scientific journals by professors and pupils from the course of graduation at the Instituto de Geociências at the University of São Paulo, and has as objective to identify the use, the perception of positive and negative points and the possibility of the library being a facilitator/intermediator of this process. 178 questionnaires had been sent, with 79,8% return rate (142 questionnaires). The results indicate that the professors and gradutation students have a routine of using the electronic journal in their activities of education and research, although printed culture is still strongly present. The biggest difficulty observed was in the identification and selection of the more adjusted informational resources, which to a series of possibilities for the role of the library, as much in the spreading of the resources as in the orientation of the users. It is considered that, although journals are used as routine, questions such as preservation and information filling, guarantee of access throughout the time, development of trustworthy interfaces and availability of retrospective collections need to be defined and to be decided for the acceptance of electronic scientific journal.

Abstract:
This study aimed at assessing access and use of PERii electronic journal resources by postgraduate students in the School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam. Specific objectives for this study were to examine if the postgraduate students in the School of Eduction are aware of PERii electronic journal resources; to examine if the postgraduate students access PERii electronic journal resources; to examine if the postgraduate students use PERii electronic journal resources; to examine the challenges encountered by postgraduate students in the access and use of PERii electronic journal resources; and to determine possible ways to improve access and use of PERii electronic journal resources. The study was basically a cross-sectional study and data were collected through a combination of questionnaire for postgraduate students and interview for the Reference Librarians. The findings of this study were that the majority of postgraduate are aware of PERii electronic journal resources through various sources including the Library website, notice board, fliers, posters, IL training, colleagues, librarians and supervisors. Again, the majority of them use PERii electronic journal resources for various purposes including working on the assignments, research proposal writing, literature review, research report writing, current awareness, leisure, and for extra exploration of ongoing scientific debates through peer reviewed papers. The challenges encountered include power outage, inadequate bandwidth, slow download speed, inability to access the resources from home, lack of training, lack of awareness, limited access to computers and difficult in making a search. Suggested ways to improve access and use of PERii electronic journal resources include seeking to provide training on how to access and use of PERii electronic journal resources; ensure stable and reliable power, ensure adequate bandwidth; increase awareness of the resources, improve ICT infrastructure, enable access of the resources from home; increase download speed and ensure relevant information is provided. Based on these findings it was recommended that training on access and use of PERii electronic journal resources should be integrated into the University curriculum; ICT infrastructure to support access and use of PERii electronic journal resources should be improved; ensuring stable and reliable power by buying heavy duty generators at the University; increasing awareness by improving methods for promotion and marketing of the resources; enabling access of PERii electronic journal resources from home; ensuring adequate bandwidth through shaping the available bandwidth allowing certain services such as ICT services to receive a large proportion of bandwidth than other services; and ensuring relevant information is provided through subscribing more database with relevant information to all courses at the University.

Abstract:
Documentation in electronic journals is perceived as time consuming and sometimes technically difficult to handle, but also leads to an improved quality of care. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' perceptions of documentation with a focus on timing, technique and quality of care and whether any differences in these perceptions were dependent on age. Method: Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study in the survey form, 28 nurses at a university hospital in central Sweden participated in the study. Regression analysis was performed with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: Electronic documentation takes 30 to 60 minutes for most nurses and half of them considered it a reasonable time. Computer skills were good enough for most, but the computers and the electronic patient record system Cosmic were experienced to work less well or badly in half the study group. Two-thirds of the studygroup agreed partly or more to that the quality of care is adversely affected because of the time documentation takes from the patient care. However, about half of the study group agreed that electronic patient records increase health care quality and patient safety. Care plans were used to a great extent. Young nurses rated themselves significantly better than the older ones to handle a computer in their daily work. Conclusion: A variety of problems and perceptions exist in connection with electronic documentation. Continuous development of technology, documentation systems and the use of care plans can contribute to the continuing high quality of care and patient safety.
Vårdplaner används i hög utsträckning.

Abstract:
The electronic patient record is a part of nurses´ daily work, and increases the premise of patient safety. Nurses work by the core competencies informatics and safety, but flaws in the electronic patient record can affect these adversely. The aim of the study was to investigate the nurses' knowledge and understanding of using electronic patient records in municipal home care. Method: quantitative cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of nurses and district nurses from five municipalities in the county of Kronoberg (n 67). The data collection was done using questionnaires, which were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: the electronic patient record was to a high degree considered to be a good support in the daily work, and to contribute to a good and safe care. Navigation in the patient record and transfer of information between different health care providers, was usually not regarded as a major problem. Double documentation between various systems were common. There was a lack of knowledge of the patient record´s functions. It was in most cases not possible to use wireless connections for the patient record in the patient´s home, although the need existed. Over 80 % stated that the medication list was updated sometimes or rarely. These shortcomings can affect patient safety in a negative way, because the prerequisite for providing a safe care is that the information in the patient record is clear and accurate. The results of the study could be the basis for further research in safety, and for the development of the electronic patient record´s usability.

With the documentary explosion and the multiple possibilities to access information provided by information and communication technologies, we see the proliferation of publications of all kinds, such as electronic journals, which facilitate access and dissemination of the research undertaken and allows greater flexibility in information retrieval. Due to the care undertaken by Brazilian funding agencies, such as the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (originally Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (originally Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – CNPq), it is evident the role of scientific journals in the academic context as indicators performance both for the institutions and for the researchers. After all, it is they which make public the researches developed after proper peer review, ensuring value to the publicized contents. The purpose is, therefore, analyze the production of postgraduate studies in information science (CI), through the national electronic journals listed in the Capes Journal Portal and qualified at concepts from A1 to B2, to identify the current state of research in the area. After that, operational objectives are: (1) discuss the science, their relations and contextualization within contemporary society; (2) explore the academic production in the contemporaneity contemplating the prospects of electronic journals; (3) identify the most debated topics in CI, through the analysis of articles published from 2003 to 2013; (4) detect the topics of articles aiming to project thematic similarities and differences within the interdisciplinarity, including the identification of important issues and not covered. To achieve the objectives, in theoretical terms, discusses, initially, the science in contemporary society, following chapter about the foundations of CI and its relation to scientific communication, in which emphasize perspectives and interdisciplinary relationships and research lines of the area of knowledge focused. The fourth chapter evidences the scientific journals with emphasis on electronic context. The methodological approach (chapter five) covers the typology of search (bibliographic of nature descriptive / case study) in time that discusses the techniques of collecting and analyzing data. Among the results discussed (chapter six), it is impossible review them all, cited some items. Regarding the current research situation, it verifies that increase research in CI follows the expansion of the Graduate Programs in Information Science (originally Programas de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Informação – PPGCI) and expands as found in electronic journals, the means to intensify scientific communication and ratify interdisciplinary relations. Thus, records 48 theme categories in CI. Among them, Management has the highest incidence (191 articles), as opposed to classes as Administration and Environment and Sustainability, both with only seven studies. The year 2012, among the analyzed period, is the highest production rate. The library science, in turn, it has the highest number of interdisciplinary relations. In the end, are the concluding remarks of the study and the list of bibliographic and electronic sources consulted in drawing up the text.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of electronic portfolio building in development of self-directed learning by fostering reflective thinking through electronic journals and by compelling individual to take responsibility and control of one&rsquo
s own learning in a practicum course among pre-service teachers from the Department of Foreign Language Education, Middle East Technical University. A qualitative case study research method was applied to analyze the data gathered from pre- and post-ICT surveys, pre- and post Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scales, interviews, and the electronic journals and artifacts demonstrated in pre-service teachers&rsquo
web-based electronic portfolios. The data were collected from eight 4th grade undergraduate pre-service teachers enrolled in School Experience course of the English Language Teaching program at METU during 2008-2009 Fall Term. Electronic portfolios, having the opportunity to provide multimedia displays, allow the pre-service teachers to monitor the outcomes of their learning goals and strategies regularly and by monitoring their studies and reflections they review their own work and have a chance to evaluate their learning and teaching process. Essentially, portfolios transfer the responsibility of learning and decision making to the student with its dynamic process
when students are required to reflect on the information they acquire and on how they acquire this information, they begin to accept their learning practice as a process under their control. This study recognizes the notion that information and communication technologies are crucial to teacher education for both learning and teaching
and takes the constructivist stance that using ICTs tools, mainly electronic portfolios in this case, enhances reflective thinking, authentic self-assessment, self-management, and ownership over learning process and facilitates technological competence which all in all foster self-direction in learning.

Abstract:
The present thesis postulates that the application of Information Architecture in electronic journals can help to promote collaboration between members of the scientific community. Therefore, the result of their application must also be the object of evaluation, as well as other aspects generally evaluated by traditional instruments. In order to demonstrate this empirically, based on state of the art on the subject, it has created an assessment tool of scientific journals which includes, in addition to organizing systems, search, labeling and navigation, also the journal interaction system, focusing on collaboration. This instrument allowed to inspect the presence of Information Architecture and the promotion of collaboration in three science journals of global importance: Nature, Science e PLOS Biology. It was found that the journals presents the following actions: planning of Architecture Information; integration of collaborative resources; social media presence; metrics description from social media dissemination; integration of formal and informal science communication. The analysis identified strengths and possibilities for improvement in each of the journals but more importantly, has tested a compound indicators instrument that may constitute targets to be achieved by scientific journals in general, which aim to improve its relationship with the scientific communities. This research also suggests that journals incorporate technological elements coming from social networks, whose systems have been tested and nowadays have a wide range of users. Finally, it was notice the movement toward the expansion of scientific communication through science journals, including a new historical stage of collaboration in network science.

Once the information sources had been mapped, the largest presence of journals was found at the information source LAPTOC, followed by LATINDEX. Despite the presence of limited significance in international information sources, it was found that the journals belonging to PPCU aim at widening the characteristics which promote their visibility. It suggests a string of new studies, deepening the analyses, addressing other themes related to visibility and, especially, bibliometric studies.

Abstract:
In 2012, the county of Uppland in Sweden launched a service granting patients online access to their electronic medical record (EMR), including the list of staff who have logged into the record (the “log list”). Patients seem predominantly positive to this service whereas many professionals, physicians specifically, have expressed concerns about, for example, increased risks of threats and violence towards healthcare staff. One year after launch the present study was conducted to examine whether staff whose patients had gained access to online EMRs experienced greater risks of threats and violence, and were exposed to more threats and violence, than those whose patients had not yet gained access. The extent to which professional role, gender, work experience and staff attitudes to the service were important factors was also examined. A total of 174 professionals at Uppsala University Hospital responded to a web survey (35% response rate). 83 represented the emergency department, whose patients had online EMR access, and 91 represented the psychiatric department, whose patients had not. 40% of all participating professionals, emergency physicians and psychiatric staff specifically, believed that risks of threats and violence increase after launch. The results did not, however, support a correlation between patient access to online EMRs and more incidents of threats and violence, and only one respondent reported that patient access had played any significant negative role in relation to an incident. These and other results may prove useful as the online EMR service is now being launched in other Swedish counties as well.

Abstract:
The aim of this diploma thesis is to provide a systematic study of Open Journal System, which is designed for electronic research papers publishing. Due to the nature of information published in this system, there is an elaborate approval process controlled by the editor. The main objective of this thesis is the realization of a system module, which would, at the end of the approval process, implement a stamp incorporating metadata of the source magazine to individual electronic documents. The thesis gives insight into the development of the structure of the Open Journal System and, briefly, describes the possibility of implementing this system. Another part of the work focuses on the sub-steps of the stamping module which was implemented into the system. This module allows editors to stamp individual electronic PDF documents that are published within the magazine and its various volumes. The module is designed to simplify the editing process of the journal with no prolongation or any other additional time required. Among other things, the reader learns how it is possible to create a block module, which can be used in the sidebar to display any system information. The work, also, previews the possibility to customize the user interface. Each implemented part contains solution proposals and, further, the implementation method and technical description is described in more detail. For better understanding and integrity of the work, stretches of the given code are also included, this might serve as an inspiration for users‘ modifications of the system.

Abstract:
The online newsmagazine, by incorporating and extending the capabilities of traditional media, poses a challenge to the conventional notion of both the newsmagazine and the time-based nature of news. In examining the online newsmagazine as an abstract construct as well as a physical form of media, issues of time, space and interactivity can be redefined in terms of the online environment. Using samples culled from the web and the print versions of Maclean's, Newsweek and Time, this thesis considers issues such as layout and tactility, temporality and its effect on the concept of the newsmagazine, and the changing role of the editorial staff. These factors are especially relevant to not only the online newsmagazine's current struggle to establish itself as a credible form of news dissemination within the online environment, but also the future evolution that may be involved in order to ensure the survival of the online newsmagazine.

Abstract:
Submitted to the Department of Library and Information Science for the degree of Master of Library and Information Science, in the Faculty of Arts, at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2002.
The study investigates the use of electronic journals for the dissemination of scholarly information at the Universities of Natal and Zululand and attempts at determining the level of electronic journal use by the scholarly communities, and the perceived impact that these journals have on the community. Similarly, the role-played by the academic libraries in the provision of the journals has been explored. The scholarly community included the academic staff, the library staff and postgraduate students at the two universities. A survey research method was used to elicit information from the subjects. The population was sampled by use of stratified random sampling technique. Firstly, five academic faculties were selected, four from the University of Zululand, and three from the University of Natal. This was done by first drawing an alphabetical list of the academic staff in faculties by academic status. Secondly, The Deans were approached for permission to seek assistance of various heads of departments and heads of schools in distributing the questionnaires to postgraduate students. However, with postgraduate students it was not possible to secure a usable list as most of them are part timers and far away from campus. As a result as many questionnaires were distributed to postgraduate students before they were randomly selected for the sample. Ultimately, a sample of 10% was drawn from the population of 1969 postgraduate students. Regarding the academic staff a sample of 20% was drawn from each strata. The total population for the academic staff was 557. All professional librarians in the two university libraries were identified and included in the study. Data available in the university calendars and the figures obtained from the Division of Information Technology and Faculty Administration Offices was invaluable. Two sets of questionnaires were administered to the two groups, one to the academic staff and postgraduate students and the other one to the library staff. The sample frame was distributed as follows: 197 postgraduate students, 111 academic staff and 34 library staff. Data was analyzed by means of the SYSTAT Version 7.0 and Microsoft Exel for coding data. The results show that the level of electronic journal use by the two universities is still low, because, as a matter of verification. respondents found it difficult to select the type of journals they use most between electronic journals and printed journals. A large number (61 %) identified printed vi joumals. There is a slight difference between the various disciplines in the use and understanding of electronic joumals. It is reccmmended that the academic library should provide the facilities where users could access electronic joumals on their own as well as the marketing of the available services to the library clientele. There is a strong need of user education, more especially in the use of electronic joumals.

Abstract: Vocabulary control in electronic scientific journals aims to minimize or extinguish the ambiguity of natural language, in order to provide an artificial language heading towards organizing, representing and retrieving information. The controlled vocabularies originated in the electronic scientific journals, in this case study, are made available through VCPC Tools, as independently set device, which instigates the need to map and make them interoperable. The intended contribution, with the accomplishment of this study, is to widely enable users to make inferences about the interoperability between SOCs – Knowledge Organization Systems, and to apply them in electronic scientific journals managed by the OJS – Open Journal Systems, that already utilize controlled vocabulary. The question to be answered is: how to retrieve information in electronic scientific journals through controlled vocabularies mapped from keywords in an interoperability model? The initial hypothesis is that the controlled vocabularies when applied to electronic scientific journals, managed by the OJS, can be considered as an interoperable instrument to improve the processes of searching and retrieving articles, and constitute the basis for the authors (when assigning keywords) and for users (in the operation of finding) to properly search, through more effective terms and refined access. The thesis being held is that interoperable controlled vocabulary, in a context of a huge amount of scientific production... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
Electronic journals unfold their most valuable features when they are inter-linked with other documents, archives and databases. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures "continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form". Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. This paper focuses on the issues related to the archiving of electronic journals in Physics and Astronomy by the publishers, aggregators and the consortia.

Abstract:
Computer-based tools for communication are a recent technological development. They promise to provide new routes by which to communicate with others and to transform some communications that have hitherto been dependent on media such as paper. One example is the possibility of supporting scholarly communication by the use of electronic systems, which also promises a method by which the information explosion might be handled. The research is an examinat4on of whether or not the support of scholarly communication in this way is feasible. To investigate communication systems requires a large scale study over a long period. Accordingly the research rests on a study programme on 'electronic journals', BLEND, which ran from 1980 to 1984, funded by the British Library Research and Development Department. The feasibility of ielectronic journals is investigated by exploring the usability, utility, likeability and cost-effectiveness of the communications system. An analysis of the frequency and distribution of the use of the computer-based communications system showed that many things seemed to get in the way of accessing it. Several techniques were used to examine this: transaction recording, interviews, telephone surveys, questionnaires and analysis of requests for help. Once the system was accessed, a comparison of users' aims with actual use shows that different forms of the journal should be explored in the future. Two reasons for the access rate and type of use made of the system was the degree to which researchers were able to accommodate the use of a new communications system into existing patterns of work and the level of usability of the system. One area in usability that is explored in detail is the way that text can be read easily on a screen. The cost-effectiveness of the system is examined by projecting from actual costs and patterns of use. The final chapters bring together the studies in a 'Barrier' framework for understanding the use of a communications system and look forward to the future of electronic journals.

Open access publishing is an initiative that aims to provide universal, unrestricted free access to full-text scholarly materials via the Internet. This presents a radically different approach to the dissemination of research articles that has traditionally been controlled by the publishing enterprise that regulates access by means of subscriptions and licences fees levied on users, predominantly academic libraries. In presenting the case for open access publishing, the thesis explored the contemporary research environment, changing modes of knowledge production, the problems associated with the existing academic journal system, and the subsequent growth of the open access movement as an intervention to reclaim scientific communication. It highlighted the ways in which open access better answers the requirements of researchers, funders, governments, and society more broadly.

Celestin, Amber. "Defining spaces: Giovanni's Room and the journey to identity." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/3296.

Abstract:
James Baldwin argues throughout his work that identity and an honest sense of self can only be attained through a personal journey that involves more than just movement from one point to another; it must also lead to a change within and an acceptance of self. In Giovanni's Room, the main character David travels a journey devoid of personal growth and acceptance. A white, homosexual man, David finds himself trapped in a white, straight, masculine, American ideal which does not define him. He spends the novel trying to outrun and reject his past and aspects of his identity which he wishes to ignore. Through David's struggles, Baldwin shows a connection between internal and external spaces, and establishes a link between choice and acceptance when creating a personal identity. Baldwin establishes self-reflection to be the only means of creating a personal identity that is able to balance acceptance with self-invention. He explores this self-reflection in terms of internal/external and choice/acceptance throughout the novel, showing the struggle to be both personal and shared with the community to which one attempts to belong. In this essay I examine the connection between internal/external and choice/acceptance in light of Baldwin's belief that every American must undertake an honest journey of self-discovery in order to establish an inclusive rather than exclusive personal and national identity. I link that journey of identity to David's perpetual movement through the inner and outer spaces of the novel, a movement which reflects that of his ancestors and many Americans before him. I also explore American views of masculinity and homosexuality, and how Baldwin shows these views to affect David (and all Americans) in his search for self and home.

Bava, Saliha. "Transforming Performances: An Intern-Reseacher's Hypertextual Journey in a Postmodern Community." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/25951.

Full text
Abstract:
I present the dissertation web as a montage of a postmodern inquiry of my doctoral internship and research experiences—concerns and jubilation—positioned within the discourses of postmodern, dissertation, academia, experimentalism and cyberspace innovations among others. I create a social constructionistic interactive interplay, using hypertext, among my various voices of an intern, a researcher and a person. In the dissertation web—my inquiry—I practice the characterization of postmodernism on numerous fronts—subject of study, context of study, methodology and re-presentation of the inquiry. Implicitly and explicitly, I articulate the various characterizations of postmodernism in my inquiry by challenging the traditional research practices (metanarratives). I challenge the traditional praxis by alternate performances of research practices such as studying myself in a cultural context of an internship using the methodology of autoethnography and performance. The hypertext docuverse is a further characterization of postmodernism in the styles and structures that are used for re-presentation of the narratives. The styles of narration I useâ such as words and graphics, prose and poetry, first person conversational texts, narratives and collages—blur the boundary of "academic" writing, literature, and art. The hypertext is intended as a metaphorical experiential, intertextual journey of an intern and a researcher. Rather than a fixed structure, I create numerous structures of possible structures to privilege the readers' navigational choices. I anticipate that the reader's choices in the virtual space might create a sense of meaning-transformation as one traverses through the dissertation web, thus, valuing fragmentation and connection as aspects of sense-making, which are contextualized (among others) by the reader's meaning frames and my hypertextual performances. The dissertation is submitted in three formats—exclusive dissertation web.pdf, intertextual dissertation web.pdf, and xml version. The exclusive dissertation web.pdf is a web capture in pdf format of all the "files" that compose the dissertation web created in html. The intertextual dissertation web.pdf is a web capture of my dissertation along with the capture of external web resources that contextualize my dissertation web, thus illustrating the intertextuality of hypertexts by making the dissertation part of the larger textual web. Due to the web capture, the "docuverse" is nonlinear and the pages do not follow any particular or author predefined sequences. So, please use the internal links or the bookmarks to read or browse the dissertation web rather than scroll from the first "page" to the last "page" of the pdf formatted docuverse. The third version in xml will be made available at a later date. An html version of the dissertation is available directly from the researcher-author. CAUTION! The links from the abstract may be broken due to archiving of the dissertation web.
