Abstract:
Purpose – A survey of students in different undergraduate majors and years asked where they bought their textbooks, the types of electronic devices they used, and their post-class use of textbook material. The research goal was to determine the groups of students likely most receptive to e-textbooks and to assess the potential environmental benefits of e-textbook adoption. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The student population of freshmen and juniors registered at Michigan State University were surveyed via e-mail/online in summer 2010. 477 freshmen (7.8 percent of surveyed) and 652 juniors (10.2 percent of surveyed) responded. Responses were grouped together into seven categories by student major. Findings – Surveyed students used far more print textbooks than e-textbooks. Laptops were the dominant student device and their future promise for e-textbook use is limited. The higher-than-expected rate of e-waste generation by students indicates that the environmental benefits of e-textbook adoption may be limited without improvements in e-waste management. However, results suggest that students from all majors and years were willing to experiment with different textbook vendors, so if functionality and cost incentives are improved, e-textbook adoption will likely be a widespread campus phenomenon. Originality/value – Research on e-textbooks often focuses on educational value or student preference; this research instead provides results assessing whether current e-device use on campus will support e-textbooks and whether adopting e-textbooks will have an environmental benefit over print textbooks. The study also reveals that many students learn to adapt their purchasing behavior with experience, and that this trend is widespread throughout all majors.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of teaching in primary schools depends on the pupils’ active engagement. When teaching the pupils of today, different forms and methods have to be used to organise the learning process, rather than opting for the simple transfer of knowledge directly from teacher to pupil. Pupils today do not simply sit and listen to the teacher and answer his/her questions. They also discuss and relate what they are taught to their personal experiences. A number of studies show that a person absorbs different amounts of information when listening, watching, listening and watching, and actively participating. The pupils’ involvement during the different activities in the lesson varies. Their acquisition capacity is different when listening to a teacher’s explanations, reading, observing a demonstration, practicing or using a computer, multimedia and electronic resources. The electronic textbook (also known as e-textbook) is a teaching tool and a rich source of additional tasks and materials for pupils and teachers. Electronic textbooks are digitised versions of paper textbooks. Electronic textbooks can be used online or offline. Electronic versions contain additional materials, such as audio, video, animations, 3D visualisations and interactive tests, as well as hyperlinks to relevant websites. The electronic readable textbook is identical to the approved print edition of the textbook. The electronic readable textbook creates a realistic page-turning effect in PDF format. In Bulgaria, new mathematics learning sets were created for primary school classes in accordance with the new Preschool and School Education Act, which came into force from the 2016/2017 school year, and the modified curricula. An electronic textbook and an electronic readable textbook have been developed for each new textbook. E-textbooks are free of charge for teachers who have chosen to teach using the paper textbook of the relevant publisher. Pupils and parents can also access them after registering on the publisher’s website. The Ministry of Education and Science requires that publishers give parents and pupils free access to electronic readable textbooks. The main idea of this article is to present an analysis of the third grade mathematics textbook published by Anubis and the electronic resources it features (additional tasks and materials). The article will also include the opinions of pedagogical students collected in a survey of the use of electronic textbooks in teaching primary school pupils.

Abstract:
Since 2015, educational reform has been implemented in Bulgaria. It was initiated with the entry into force of the new Preschool and School Education Act36. On the basis of this law, new curricula were adopted in all subjects, including elementary classes in mathematics. Mathematics kits for elementary classes, along with textbooks, study notebooks, a teacher’s book already include electronic readable textbooks and e-textbooks. “Electronic Readable Textbook” is an electronic product whose content is exactly the same as the content of the approved textbook created as a print edition37. The e-textbook is an electronic product that contains additional electronic resources to the individual development of lesson topics, such as tasks, exercises, tests and more. This educational content enables modern students, aged 7-10, to work with electronic resources independently or under the guidance of a teacher, to reflect and consolidate mathematical knowledge and skills, to develop their digital skills, to increase their interest in mathematics. Modern academic preparation for elementary teachers should also include such theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and competences for working with electronic textbooks and with the electronic resources in them. The purpose of my research is to make an analysis of the content included in the electronic textbook for mathematics for the first grade of the Anubis publishing brand of the publishing house KLETT – Bulgaria.38 On the basis of this analysis, methodological guidelines will be developed for working with the different types of electronic resources, which will become part of the academic preparation of the pedagogical students in the university discipline “Didactics of mathematics in elementary classes”. A survey of 166 pedagogical students in bachelor’s and master’s degree on their opinion on e-textbooks conducted this year has yielded interesting and revealing results that confirm the need for updating their academic training in the field of e-textbooks. The majority of respondents believe that primary teachers should use e-books in their work – 83%. When asked which subject is most appropriate to use e-textbooks, mathematics ranks immediately after the natural and social sciences, with 58.4% of the respondents citing it as the most appropriate subject for applying e-textbooks. At the same time, one third of respondents (33.1%) said they did not feel prepared to work with e-books. Of all those surveyed, 81.4% believe that it is necessary to include preparation for work with e-textbooks in university courses in private didactics. This gave me reason to head to the topic of this article and to make a content analysis of an electronic first grade mathematics textbook by classifying the types of additional electronic resources in it.

Abstract:
The article deals with the effectiveness of electronic textbooks in Ukrainian schools, the understanding of the concept of «electronic textbook» in Ukrainian legislation governing publishing. The article analyses basic principles of creating electronic textbooks on three platform: Bristar, Розумники and MozaWeb. The problems of creating electronic textbooks for elementary school have been highlighted. The prospects for further research and the possibility of using electronic textbooks in the educational process have been described. It has been emphasized that the perception of the term «e-book» has changed. Previously, this term was understood as the device which the reading was carried out, now an e-book is a content that requires playback by individual devices. The multimedia educational publications created in the framework of the experiment of introducing the electronic textbook and the electronic platform and their compliance with the Regulations on the electronic textbook are analyzed. Summarizing our analysis, we can highlight that non-compliance with the Regulations has been identified, such as insufficient playback of products on different operating systems, non-unified design between parts of the publication that are interactive, and content of the print edition that created the electronic version. Some editions which are recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science are difficult to buy for later use, and some of them are only available in the demo version. Keywords: e-learning publication, e-textbook, New Ukrainian School, e-textbook, interactive textbook, multimedia content.

Abstract:
Changes in education contribute to its modernization and renewal. Along with new forms, methods and means of enriching the educational process, the well-known teaching methods using electronic textbooks also hold a positive trend. In the Tomsk Technical School of Railway Transport — branch of the Siberian Transport University electronic textbooks are widely used. The tendency of their application and implementation in educational activities, both with full-time and distance learning, gives good results. Because they use an electronic textbook created for everyone requirements. A plus is the fact that the electronic textbook is developed on the basis of the copyright material of the subject teacher, taking into account intrasubject and intersubject communications. Such development gives a number of advantages over the traditional print publication and allows to achieve higher levels of learning in comparison with traditional forms of training. For students of all specialties, the electronic textbook is an indispensable assistant in the development of disciplines, and for graduates of the specialty “Information Systems” such a textbook is also a good test of their knowledge, skills and competencies. Students of this specialty develop and create electronic textbooks for a technical school under the guidance of scientific advisers and subject teachers, from whom it was requested to present the training course in a multimedia form. as an example, we consider the features of the development, creation, implementation of an electronic textbook on the subject “Astronomy” in the educational process.

Abstract:
This scientific article assesses the process of studying educational materials in subjects in secondary schools of the Kyrgyz Republic using electronic textbooks. Currently, there are very few electronic textbook options for school subjects. In fact, electronic versions of school subjects would give impetus to the self-development of students with the help of electronic versions of textbooks. In this case, the students would get time for independent study of incomprehensible learning materials. The article focuses on the educational activities in which the student works without the participation of a teacher. In this case, the student undergoes self-analysis and planning of educational activities, or rather, evaluates whch materials are not fully known, for this the student independently analyzes the educational materials and repeats. This, of course, ensures the quality of education for itself and develops independently (at the same time, the student uses audio, video materials, textual content of the textbook, presentations and computer test in an electronic textbook).

Abstract:
Traditional teaching aids lose their relevance in connection with the introduction of a competence approach, therefore, it is necessary to introduce such manuals that will allow students to retain their mobility and productivity without losing the quality of teaching. The relevance of the chosen topic is determined by the identification of the features of the development of qualitatively new electronic teaching aids in the university. The purpose of the research: identification of features of the development of an electronic textbook in the formation of professional competencies of students. For this purpose we have singled out the definition of the term “electronic publication”. The problems associated with the development and implementation of electronic textbooks have been identified. The principles of creating electronic materials have been singled out, which is part of the structure and composition of the electronic textbook, as well as the experiments carried out by us, demonstrating, firstly, the need to use information technology in education, and secondly the informativeness and effectiveness of the electronic textbook. One of the main recommendations for the creation of an electronic textbook is the need to provide the teacher with an adequate individual perception, understanding of the teaching material by students. It is necessary to timely eliminate errors, as well as update data: a glossary, practical tasks and text textbooks.

Abstract:
Electronic textbooks are different from ebooks (electronic books) in that they allow the user to go beyond just reading material on a computer screen. Electronic textbooks encourage the user to accomplish all of the operations typically performed with a hardcopy text in addition to some functions not possible with paper books. With electronic textbooks users can make annotations in the textbook with e-ink; mark important sections; search over the ink, the text, or even the scanned images; look up items in online dictionaries or encyclopedias; perform interactive reinforcement drills; view simulations; and many other operations afforded by the computing power of the underlying computer and the reach of the Internet connection. These operations encourage students to engage in active reading. The VText framework is designed to provide many of the desired features of an e-textbook in such a way that it produces pedagogical value rather than just convenience for students. Many so-called e-textbook solutions available today provide few features beyond those possible with hardcopy textbooks. The VText framework is built as an add-in to Microsoft's note-taking program, OneNote. The add-in provides features that facilitate the use of OneNote as a reader and as an educational tool while leaving in place OneNote's strengths in note-taking, collaboration, and search.

Class of 2009 Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The use and utility of textbooks in health professional training programs is variable. Studies on these topics in medical schools have shown a wide variety of results with most showing surprisingly little textbook use and that students who purchased textbooks tend to have surprisingly low levels of use, with an increasing trend towards preferences for electronic resources. The purpose of the study was to evaluate pharmacy students’ use of course textbooks. METHODS: Second year students at the College of Pharmacy of the University of Arizona completed a survey that included what required or recommended books in the second year curriculum were purchased, how much of the text they actually read, as well as a 6 point response scale to rate each textbooks usefulness. RESULTS: Seventy-four students completed the survey near the end of the academic year. Only 30.45 percent of respondents purchased course textbooks. Purchased percentages for individual textbooks ranged from 62.3% to 0%. Student ratings for usefulness of each textbook ranged from 2.0 to 5.3 with the medicinal chemistry and drug information textbooks rated the lowest and electronic resources rated the highest. The vast majority of students who purchased the book used it them for less than one hour per week. CONCLUSIONS: Less than a third of students purchase required or recommended textbook. Time spent using the textbook was extremely low. Usefulness varied with the textbook and students expressed a strong preference for electronic resources

Abubaker, Azza A. "Factors influence reading from screen of Arabic textbook for learning by children aged 9 to 13." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2014. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/19509/.

Abstract:
The problem with e-texts are related to the way texts are displayed on a screen, with multiple and different aspects that affect legibility, making readers prefer to read a paper format rather than e-resources. This research describes the factors that affect the legibility of online texts aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the usability of electronic Arabic texts for learning purposes within the field of electronic reading; mainly reading Arabic texts for students aged 9 to 13. This study sets out three particular aims: (1) building a reading strategy for Arabic schoolbook in both formats electronic and paper format based on users’ cognitive and behavioural processes; (2) defining the influence of three typographical variables that affect reading Arabic texts on a screen (font size, font-type and line length); and (3) studying the efficiency of reading Arabic texts and the related factors impacting the efficiency of reading and comprehension. Based on the nature of the research questions and objectives, positivism and phenomenology are adopted as the underlying philosophy for this research. The empirical research was divided into three phases; the first phase focused on collecting data about using the internet among students in primary schools by means of a questionnaire. This has helped in the selection of samples and determined the extent of the students’ reluctance to read from a screen. The second phase was to investigate the reading process of school book in two formats [ paper and electronic format] to build reading model based on users’ cognitive and behavioural processes. The third phase was to examine the factors that affect negatively the usability of electronic texts by examining three issues: font size [10, 14, 16 and 18], font type [Arabic traditional, Arial, Times New Roman, Simplified Arabic, and Courier New], and line length [single column and double columns]. Observation was applied as a tool to collect the data. The study has made a significant contribution to the understanding of electronic reading of Arabic language. This contribution addressed five aspects: (1) Two models of reading process for schoolbook using Arabic language were built according to users’ interaction with the school textbook in two formats ( electronic and paper). These models will not only help define the interaction amongst users and e-books, but will also help designers to understand user behaviour of e-books and thereby to establish the most appropriate functions/features when building an e-book interface. (2) Identify the optimal font size for reading an Arabic script from screen by children aged 9 to 13. (3) Based on collecting data from experiments (2) and (3) and comparing this date with other researches that have done in the same field, new model explains the interaction between three topographical variables [font size, font type and line length] and their relationships with independent variables were provided. (4) Test a new display technique to improve the legibility of reading Arabic online texts by using colour to increase the ability to focus vision when moving from one line to another so as to improve the screen display. And (5) according to quantitative and qualitative several of the rules were recommended for designers and educators to follow when designing and presenting Arabic text on screen. On the other hand, some recommendations for future research have been derived from this thesis, such as the following. (1) Investigating the effect of the colour factor on improving the legibility of Arabic texts on screen for children, e.g. using different colours to distinguish between dots and vowels. (2) Exploring and developing an e-reading model based on all the factors recorded in the empirical studies in the reading field which will lead to building a theory on e- reading. (3) Investigating the influence of a variable effect reading process and the variables that have a positive or negative impact on it. (4) Applying a model that used colour to increase the ability to focus using different age-range and type of information such as journals or books.

Abstract:
OpenDSA is a collection of open source tutorials for teaching data structures and algorithms. It was created with the goals of visualizing complex, abstract topics; increasing the amount of practice material available to students; and providing immediate feedback and incremental assessment. In this thesis, I first describe aspects of the OpenDSA architecture relevant to collecting user interaction data. I then present an analysis of the interaction log data gathered from three classes during Spring 2013. The analysis focuses on determining the time distribution of student activity, determining the time required for assignment completion, and exploring \credit-seeking" behaviors and behavior related to non-required exercises. We identified clusters of students based on when they completed exercises, verified the reliability of estimated time requirements for exercises, provided evidence that a majority of students do not read the text, discovered a measurement that could be used to identify exercises that require additional development, and found evidence that students complete exercises after obtaining credit. Furthermore, we determined that slideshow usage was fairly high (even when credit was not ordered), and skipping to the end of slideshows was more common when credit was offered but also occurred when it was not.

Abstract:
Electronic textbooks have a potential to combine the teaching values of digital technology with didactic-methodological requirements that a textbook should meet and thus become a means of teaching capable of meeting the needs of today’s students and achieving modern educational goals. In order for an electronic textbook to have its expected effect, it is necessary that its concept takes into account certain theoretical and practical knowledge synthesized in the so-called quality standards. Although the theoretical and empirical research of electronic textbooks is at its very beginning and there is not even closely a rich body of knowledge as in the case of printed textbooks, certain postulates do exist and they need to be taken into account when creating and evaluating electronic textbooks. This paper uses the content analysis technique to examine the extent to which the electronic textbook On Language, published by Klett, meets the specific requirements of electronic textbooks. The results show that the analysed electronic textbook is between low and medium level of interactivity, contains a small number of multimedia elements and does not use the possibility of hyper textual links, but relies exclusively on a linear structure in the content presentation.

Abstract:
Abstract. In order to help people better understand the culture of the Republic of China (ROC), experience the cultural connotation of ROC, and facilitate the research by researchers and the inheritance of ROC culture, this article proposes a ROC textbook retrieval system. The system is mainly divided into four modules: login and registration, book retrieval, online reading, and document downloading. We summarized and classified existing ROC textbooks, and converted them into electronic materials by scanning to build a database of ROC textbooks. According to the characteristics of textbooks, a fast retrieval algorithm is proposed to provide users with book search, online reading and other functions on the client interface, enabling users to search and read ROC textbooks online at all times and places through electronic devices, accumulating cultural literacy. Users can also download books and documents according to their own needs.

Abstract:
The state of musculoskeletal system incidence of pupils of secondary schools remains a pressing problem in all regions of Ukraine, in spite of significant achievements in this direction. The determination of the readiness of teachers and senior students of pedagogical college for implementation of health-keeping technologies, which are aimed at creating a physiological posture of schoolchildren, to the educational process was conducted by our questioning method. 95% of teachers and 77.6% of students (according to polls) need methodological assistance for effective use of health-keeping technologies. We consider the main task of high school to be an optimization of the informational flow regarding health-keeping during the educational process and adaptation of the ways of presenting information to the perception of modern youth. The self-education has a great value for getting mastery, so it is necessary that a student or a teacher could have a wide access to both literature and electronic media. The Internet conferences, Internet sites, electronic textbooks, computer programs will be useful.
