Woiwode, Christoph. "Urban risk communication in Ahmedabad, India : between slum dwellers and the municipal corporation." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445152/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since rapid urban growth forces poor households to settle in highly congested urban areas, slum dwellers are increasingly vulnerable due to a multiplicity of hazards rooted in the environment, nature, health, society and the urban economy. Hitherto, the understanding of urban risks and the vulnerability of inhabitants has been an underrepresented subject in urban planning. The different reasoning and rationales of slum dwellers, municipal authorities and other actors provide each with different perceptions of risks. This study focuses on the communication of urban risks between two slum communities and the Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad by examining endeavours in slum improvement and more responsive urban governance. In using a conceptual framework that synthesises socio-cultural approaches to risk, communication theories and collaborative planning theory, the thesis points out the deficiencies and potentials of risk communication in long-term urban development planning. Currently urban risk management is not recognised as an integrated, cross-sectoral topic by the Municipal Corporation. Due to the structural fabric of the administration and the lack of capacity and guidance, the notion of risk is based on conventional approaches to disaster risk management with responsibilities spread across various departments. By contrast, slum dwellers have a much more integrated understanding of the micro-level risk conditions in which they live and work. The findings of this study suggest that a meaningful two-way communication process can only take place if the interaction of stakeholders is understood in terms of human relationships that go beyond techno-bureaucratic co-ordination and the prevalent notion of mono-directional communication. This concept of communication is underpinned by values such as trust, fairness, credibility and justice in interaction in the context of urban governance. The research approach and the findings suggest areas for improved policy making and further research. The outcome of the research especially contributes to a better understanding of urban risk situations in the social and cultural contexts of poor communities in India. Hence this investigation may be viewed as a potential basis for generating practical guidelines for mitigation policies and their links to urban governance.

Lind, Sofia. "Adaptation of eco-design methods for SMEs in India : Experiences from the electronics industry." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Water and Environmental Studies, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-9195.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis presents guidelines for how eco-design methods can be adapted to facilitate the introduction of ecologically responsible manufacturing in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Indian electronics industry. It also investigates the major opportunities and obstacles for eco-design to become a natural part of product design. This is urgent both from environmental and economic perspectives since the SMEs pollute a lot in proportion to their share of the total industrial production, and at the same time they are vulnerable for the increasing environmental demands on product design. The European Union recently introduced their directive on the Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) which bans certain hazardous chemicals in electric and electronic device. For many producers that supply to the European market this was a wake up clock to start thinking about environmental aspects related to production.

The study was carried out as an interview and questionnaire study at three SMEs in the electronics industry. Additional interviews were held with informants in different organisations. It was concluded that for SMEs in the Indian electronics industry qualitative and semi-quantitative eco-design methods should be chosen before quantitative methods. Eco-design methods should resemble traditional methods that are already used in the companies. For the product developers to be able to work with eco-design more education and other solutions are needed to raise the environmental knowledge. Support and commitment from top management is also imperative. Methods should be developed to encourage the establishment of multi functional teams and early integration of environmental aspects in design projects.

The external demands on environmentally responsible manufacturing are expected to increase in the future. This will most likely have a positive influence on the environmental awareness in the industry, just as the RoHS directive has had. However, there are still economic and technical barriers that need to be bridged for SMEs in India to be able to work with eco-design. More cooperation and communication between academics, policy makers and the industry is needed to make it happen.

The Governor and Company of merchants of London trading into the East Indies, better known as East India Company (BIC), was founded by a charter from Queen Elisabeth l on December 31st 1600. This research, which aims to analyse "the mother of the modern corporation" from a strictly legal historical point of view, focuses on two "historical commonplaces": the one of the supposed limited liability enjoyed by the company's adventurers and the one of the supposed "democratic" character of its organisation. About the first point, our conclusion is that the company provided a very pragmatic answer to the liability question: on the one hand it borrowed money from outside, on the other hand, to pay the company's debts, the adventurers were made liable to pay leviations to the company (but not directly to the company's creditors). About the second point, we arrived at the conclusion that the EIC was a democratic organisation, but only until the middle of the 171h century: the passage from a majority of number to a majority of capital didn't take place slowly, during the 19th century (as a number of scholars have sustained), but suddenly, starting from the year 1657, and it grew stronger during the second half of that same 171h century that saw the foundation of the EIC

Steinecke, Tim. "National oil companies and state actors : an assessment of the role of Petronas and ONGC in the foreign policy decision-making process of Malaysia and India using the example of overseas investments in Sudan and South Sudan." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7765.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the role of national oil companies and their overseas engagement in the foreign policy decision-making process of states. Over the past 40 years, national oil companies have gained importance in the international oil industry and currently control around 90 per cent of the global oil reserves. A number of political and economic factors – depleting domestic reserves, economic growth – have resulted in an increasing expansion of Asian national oil companies to Africa. Through the use of two Asian national oil companies – Malaysia's Petronas and India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) – and their overseas engagement in Sudan and South Sudan as case studies, the thesis assesses three aspects: factors and motives that influence the relationship between government institutions and Petronas and ONGC, the connection between this domestic relationship and the overseas engagement of both companies, and the implications of the overseas engagement of Petronas and ONGC in both Sudans for the foreign policy decision-making process of Malaysia and India. This set of questions is analysed through a comparative case study design that is supported by in-depth interviews and based on Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA), proposing a four-level theoretical framework. This thesis thus seeks to demonstrate how FPA can help assess the connection between the domestic decision-making process and the international engagement of the companies. In doing so, it not only argues that process and engagement are in fact connected, but also critically addresses conventional assumptions about the overseas engagement of national oil companies. Furthermore, this thesis questions the idea that government institutions and national oil companies act in a coherent and coordinated manner when operating abroad.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is a practice-led and corporate-grounded enquiry into the role of design research methods in a global technology company. The work aims to understand and communicate through a series of case studies how locally conducted participatory action research can be integrated into the processes of an in-house design team at the global NCR Corporation. It questions the current approaches taken in the design and development of consumer transaction technologies in the context of a global organisation and new markets. The thesis starts by introducing the reader to the global corporation in which the study is focused and author employed, the NCR Corporation. The contextual grounding of the corporate environment, its heritage, history and continued evolution will illustrate the dynamic yet traditional role design has played within the corporation. As a senior member of the Consumer Experience Design (Cx Design) team in the corporation the author is well placed to evaluate the role of design and how it can evolve. The immediate contextualisation is then followed by a broad examination of the literature in the field of design in a corporate culture, research methods and socially-led innovation. This will define the boundaries of interest and influence in the thesis. A participatory action research approach was taken to address the research questions. Informed by a series of hyperlocal and global community engagements framed and directed from within the corporate culture, the author defines an understanding of the levels of community engagement through design research. The resulting outputs are then applied within the context of the NCR Corporation where the impact and influence on such engagements can be understood. The author concludes that his contribution to new knowledge, the development of a Participatory Action Based Strategic Design Process, can be applied within a global technology company. The process adapts McNiff’s and Whitehead’s (2011) seven phases of action research reporting and Ravi Chhatpar’s strategic decision-making process. The thesis demonstrates the value and influence of design research methods in the design of consumer transaction technologies. The thesis provides an understanding of how design research methods have been applied in a corporate environment, how the insights are applied, and demonstrates how the research has influenced the author’s practice and therefore the wider Cx Design group.

Talents are important assets to enterprise and have great influence on enterprise competitiveness. Because of this, every enterprise wants to get the first-class talents. Competition and fighting among enterprises for talents is inevitable due to limited supply of talents on the market. Limited supply of talents has also made talents retention an important subject. Staff resignation not only causes suspension of job but also loss of knowledge and experience accumulation. Though knowledge management is constantly emphasized and expected to minimize the impact on company daily operation from losing talents. “People” are the key factor of a successful enterprise. In high-tech industry, talents lost not only bring loss to the company but also result in more numbers of potential competitors. Study on staff quitting is expected to understand staff behavior mode and trend. In addition to management methodology , the most commonly used methods in past research on staff quitting are interviews or questionnaire. Method used in the paper is the database existing in the enterprise for study and prediction of staff quitting behavior.

Taiwan’s personal computer (PC) industry started in the late 1970s. The industry was subsequently boosted by 1980s’ desktop PC and peripherals’ growth. From 1990s, following PC ‘s boom, Taiwan PC manufacturers rapidly grew business and agreesively expanded for gaining economic scale benefits. However, from 2010s, due to the stiff cost competition from China makers and the market saturation, Taiwan’s cunsumer electronics companies are facing low gross margin situation. On the other hand, the commercial & industrial field electronics companies, which failed in 1990s’ scale competition or chose to stay with niche market, are with high gross margin ratio and better net profit ratio as well . A lot of Taiwan consumer electronics companies start to aim for transforming into commercial and industrial field. This thesis aims to analyze, by the case study of Qisda Corporation, whether there is an unsatisfied demand from commercial and industrial customers? And whether consumer electronics companies could find a business model, cross product lines, to fit into commercial & industrial field? How does the people and system influence the transformation? Finally, this research cross check this case with the theories, including Transformation, The Long Tail and Mckinsey 7 S Model , aiming to provide a reference process for those companies target to transform.

The objective of this study is to use risk analysis management method to help brand channels electronics manufacturers (“Brands”) to create an effective method for assessing risks involving hazardous material in green electronic products, in order to lower the risk of products being returned after the regulation is on effect, and even decrease the obligation to pay legally imposed damages. The method is to prevent shipped products being tested for violating RoHS requirements and the resulting large fines and loss of reputation. Through discussion with one of the Brands, this study actually analyzes the methods it uses to find the five risk factors stated in the RoHS regulations in its manufacturing procedures for its green component. These methods come from its operating procedures to control the content analysis created from the perspective of RoHS regulations. Further, these methods originate from data collected from 6,828 cases of assessing risk factors in green components, using the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method to find the relation structure among the five risk factors. Then the methods select the main origins for the risks in these green components and use the Analysis Network Methods (ANP) method to calculate the weighs of each risk analysis standards. Finally it uses the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) with the ANP weighs to create a method for calculating risks that allows for finding the weighted risk priority number (RPN) for each one of the risk analysis methods. As a result, it ranks the level of risk for each one of the 6,828 green components, allowing for improved prioritization of activities. From analyzing the actual result one can see that the Material Composition Declaration (MCD) can create standards for critical risk evaluation for high risk green component’s weighted RPN being too high. It also affect other major risk factors for risk assessment criteria, as it is the key risk indicators for green component in the risk assessment framework, followed by "Green quality monitoring feed-IQC controlled substances hazardous equipment". Further the stickers and sponges in packaging have the highest risk index, followed by heatsinks and fansinks. This becomes the highest prioritized object of improvement and monitoring for the decision-makers of the green components in their risk assessment framework. Through the risk assessment model for green components established by this study, along with incoming quality control (IQC) methods created by the Brand cited above, which together determine detection frequency of high risk green component, the risk assessment method for green components created by this study can use incoming quality control (IQC) working methods to improve the efficiency of the flow of risk analysis of green components. Such result can further limit the cost of performing incoming quality control (IQC) to the high risk components, reducing unnecessary component inspection by IQC staff workers, and lowering the risk of violating RoHS, and at the same time increasing reliability and scientific precision in decision result.

Abstract Strategy Map shows the cause and effect relationships diagram which is selected the goal projects of four perspectives from Balanced Scorecard (BSC) , it is a more advanced managed tool than BSC. But both have not contained the feedback circulation of the strategies also fail to judge and prove the influence of events’ time delays , they are unable to simulate the complicated environment, to lack the strategy’s simulation, and not to inspect the impact on performance of the strategy further. This research proceeds case study with the method of System Dynamics and uses “the strategy’s goal planning and dynamic decision procedure”, it launches the case’s Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard then proceeds System Dynamics modeling, simulation , testing and analyzing, and proposes the conclusion of this research. This research discovers mainly as: 1. The use of Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard can help system Dynamics to make the system boundary conveniently while the enterprise’s strategy model are developing. 2. Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard are static, simple, without positive and negative relationships, and one-way causality link from bottom to top. They pay close attention to the short-term goal and neglect the long-term goal, also don’t consider the time delays, but System Dynamics can make up their deficiency. 3. The levels and auxiliaries of System Dynamics Model Structure can assist the measures of Balanced Scorecard to be instituted and be discussed. 4. The system thinking from System Dynamics can prove general objective and intuitional thought, also can get counterintuition. 5. Each KPI of Balanced Scorecard only knows the “up and down” change in itself, doesn’t understand the dynamic colloction between each other, from System Dynamics simulation can tell the influence of each other KPI. Finally, propound 5 points of this research: 1. To integrate the theories of strategy management for application. 2. To explain the changeful meaning of the performance indicator and to strengthen the performance management. 3. To assist the examing of the strategies to obtain proper decision. 4. To find the counterintuition which can help enterprises to dig unexpected questions out of the objective intuition. 5. To analyze the revenue of the strategy actions and the cost benefit, also to help the system of the budget and the strategies estimate.

Aerospace is a manufacture industry that relies on high technology and high reliability component. The nature of Aerospace Electronics business is “Low Volume, Wide Variety”, which is distinctive from Conventional Electronics business model, in which “Build to Stock” (BTS) is the mainstream. As businesses take on the trend of globalization, the environment is becoming more and more competitive, most apparent is the fact that profit margin for many OEM suppliers in Taiwan has reached a new low, where further lowering price would directly see deficit recorded. In this ”era of meager profit”, businesses not only have to deliver products at lowest price possible, but are bound to meet the expectation for “high quality low cost”, “short OTD and zero risk”. To enhance survivability and sustainability in such a tough environment, the solution known as “Lean Production”, which stresses production of low volume with wide variety, is gaining its popularity among developed countries; international automobile companies in the like of Japan’s Honda and US brand Ford Motor have adopted this solution in their manufacture sites worldwide with great result. Therefore, this study applies Lean Production to build a manufacture process model, focusing on Aerospace Manufacture, while using C Company as example. With Lean Production introduced in the factory, our in-depth analysis clearly shows production efficiency is improved by implementation of the model.

The main purpose of Patent law is to encourage technological research and development as well as to protect the patentee. Today, however, the Patent right is become a tool to obtain huge profits by speculators and thus hinders the technological development progress. One of the typical case is the lawsuit of Koninklijke Philips Electronics,N.V. vs. Princo Corporation. Since there is no regulation of “Patent misuse” being required in Taiwan, this thesis probed into the “Source of Patent Misuse” and “Criterion and Development”, to compare the pros and cons of relief pipeline in between Taiwan and USA when licensor faces the patent misuse by patentee. Utilizing the case of Koninklijke Philips Electronics,N.V. and Sony Corporation as an auxiliary explanation to discuss the Patent Misuse. Koninklijke Philips Electronics,N.V. and Sony Corporation signed an agreement not to license for third party to suppress competition which caused a consideration of illegal behavior and violated the “Patent Misuse” and “Antitrust” by ITC and CAFA In conclusion of the thesis, since the majority of technical companies in Taiwan are OEM / ODM , which still need to rely on technical support from international companies to grant the patent authorization. If any of patent misuse occurs, there will be no related relief in associate with Patent Law. The relief of Civil Code, Civil Procedure act and Fair Trade Act are slow in terms of timing urgency. How can the company (or licensees) to find the best solution in the international competitive environment? The thesis, therefore, will discuss the needs of Patent Misuse with additional articles to strengthen the provision of Patent Misuse ?If necessary, what is the reason and purpose? Or why can’t the existing law relieve and claim?

Majumdar, Rumki. "Analysis Of Productivity Growth In Indian Electronics Industry : Significance Of Management Decision Variables As Determinants." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/852.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study is an attempt to analyze the impact of changing policy regime during the liberalization era on the behaviour of 81 sample firms in Indian electronics industry in terms of factor productivities. We categorise a period of 12 years (1993-2004) as the two phases of liberalisation: - Period/ Phase 1: 1993-1998 and Period/ Phase 2: 1999-2004. The 81 sample firms are segregated into four primary sub-sectors of electronics industry based on their use pattern: communication equipments, computer hardware, consumer electronics and other electronics. The objective is to trace the growth of output in the four sub-sectors in Indian electronics industry over two phases of liberalisation and to determine the relative contributions of Input Growth (IG) and Total Factor Productivity Growth (TFPG) to Output Growth (OG). Further, the study focuses on determining the relative contributions of Technological Progress (TP) and Technical Efficiency Change (TEC) to TFPG and establishes the influence of firm specific managerial decision making and management efficiency variables on TEC and TP. The methodology follows a three-step approach in order to achieve the above objectives. The first step is to determine a potential stochastic production function using stochastic frontier production function model and measure firm-wise technical inefficiency levels. The second step is to measure the growth of TFP over two phases and to derive the components TEC and TP. The third step measures the influence of management decision variables on TEC and TP using a frontier approach model on a panel data. The contribution of labour to output was found to be higher than the contribution of capital in all four sub-sectors. However, capital contribution improved in phase 2 relative to phase 1 for computer hardware and other electronics sub-sectors. Computer hardware was the only sub-sector that experienced an improvement in returns to scale from constant returns to scale in phase 1 to increasing returns to scale in phase 2 of liberalisation. The Technological Progress (TP) and Technical Efficiency Change (TEC) that contributed to TFPG exhibited a contrasting relationship for all the four sub-sectors in the electronics industry: TEC declined when there was high TP while it improved when there was a decline in TP. This could be because Indian electronics firms generally focus on either technology imports/ develop indigenous technology to achieve TP or to assimilate the imported/ indigenous technology for better use. The lag in assimilation of imported/ developed technology could be a reason for the negative relation between TEC and TP. The communication equipment sub-sector had a balanced growth in terms of TEC and TP among the four sub-sectors. The computer hardware and the other electronics sub-sectors were worse performers in terms of TEC in period 2 relative to period 1 and so had been the electronics industry as a whole. The computer hardware sub-sector had the highest average OG in period 2 relative to period 1 among all the sub-sectors due to relatively high contribution of IG. Other electronics sub-sector had the highest average TP that compensated for the negative average TEC. On an average, percentage contribution of TP to TFPG was high for the electronics industry and its sub-sectors in period 2 relative to period 1. This is an indication that the sub-sectors of Indian electronics industry have strived and achieved steady technological progress in the period of economic liberalisation to cope with the intensifying competition internally as well as externally. The sample firms in the electronics industry were in favour of towards external acquisition of sophisticated technology, which explains the relatively high contribution of TP to the TFPG of the industry. However, this was not followed up with adequate in-house R&D in order to develop indigenous technology or to absorb imported technology as a result of which TEC for the sub-sectors and the whole industry suffered. Growth in Operating Margin (OMG) and Growth in Returns on Capital Employed (ROCEG) generate additional revenue that could be ploughed back into the firm for improvement of its existing indigenous technology or absorption of imported technology thereby leading to improvement in TE and TP. The positive influence of OMG as well as ROCEG on TEC and TP for all the sub-sectors is an indication of efficient management in these sub-sectors in utilizing assets and profits to generate earnings. However, the trend of operating margin and returns on capital employed had been declining for all the sub-sectors. Inventory management proved to be costly for TP as financial resources diverted to maintain inventory had an undesirable effect on their indigenious technology. Most of the sample firms in the electronics industry were found to have incurred R&D expenditure to derive tax incentives. As a result the resources got diverted away from other creative operational or skill improvement efforts to unproductive and wasteful R&D activities. Thus, R&D did not have the desirable influence on the components of TFPG. The present study showed that unplanned and ad hoc technology imports or even raw material imports was not conducive to the growth of both the components of TFPG. Older firms need to develop their technology or adequately import better and more sophisticated technology. This would enable older (more experienced) electronic firms to overcome the negative influence of age, reflected in our analysis. This is, however, applicable to only those segments of the electronics industry where firms preferred to serve lower end of the market as well as lower end of the technological spectrum (eg. Computer hardware and other electronics sub-sectors). Electronics industry like any other capital goods industry offers scope for vertical integration. Management of the firms in electronics industry should emphasize on vertical integration, expansion of scale of operations and should initiate R&D investments to build up R&D base, among others to improve TEC and TP. This would also help to check the decline in operating margin and returns from invested capital among the firms. Thus, improved managerial effectiveness and decision making do help in the form of generating thereby surpluses facilitating to achieve higher TP and even TEC. Regional and State governments should provide adequate policy support and appropriate industrial infrastructure to electronic firms which would in turn improve their managerial effectiveness and TFPG.

A strategy is the ultimate method for business enterprises to carve out a path to grow and find a solution to survive in the market.Strategy affects business long-term achievement in terms of profits. It is a critical success factor whether the business will succeed or fail. Taiwan TFT-LCD driver IC packaging and testing industry has been supported by both Taiwan semiconductor Industry and the TFT-LCD Industry. This has created an unique supply chain environment in which Taiwan ''s TFT-LCD driver IC packaging and testing capacity as well as its output has become the number one in the world. The case study F Electronics, the first develop key gold bumping process technology, is one of the worst. This study is both an external analysis of industry and an internal analysis of F Electronics through the use of a strategic management framework. Even though, F Electronics possesses the key bumping process tech and surely the opportunity for its core competitiveness in the market, however they did not grasp it. On the contrary, it uses very limited resources on non-critical functions, such as the development of Turn Key Services. By doing this, it definitely spreads its resources too thin, and not cost effective. Eventually, causing poor operation. This case study suggests that in order to enhance competitiveness and provide a basis for long-term development, high-level technology and capital-intensive industries should set their strategic focuses as nurturing and extending of their own core competitiveness. Under a circumstance of limited resources and in order to strengthen competitiveness. The enterprise should consider market trends and respond to a market needs assessment before investing in it’s core processes. In addition, Taiwan semiconductor industry is highly dependent on foreign-manufactured equipment. Therefore, enterprises should cooperate with domestic equipment vendors to increase self-sufficiency, reduce capital investment and lower suppliers’ bargaining power.

The semiconductor industry, from its progress in the 1960s as large computer mainframe servers to the current miniaturized personal computer, offer people the portability to carry their small electronic devices around with them. The semiconductor market has also grown to its current $100 billion dollar industry. Looking forward to the next 10 years, communication and entertainment applications will push the market to a one trillion dollar mark. Currently, semiconductor chips are used in a wide variety of communication devices and portable electronics such as mobile phones, digital still cameras, digital video camcorders, portable media players, MP3 players, gaming devices, and other multimedia devices. Furthermore, the market demand has shifted from corporate to personal use. Since the personal consumer market is spread across a variety of market, product development involves many different technical skills across a wide number of fields. As such, development is divided into different companies that handle integrated circuit design, software development, data compression, photoelectronic design, imaging processing, and casing designs. In addition to the need for tight integration among these companies, it is critical for system integration, marketing, manufacturing, retail chains and logistic management to work closely together to ensure the success of a product. From the indutrail value-chain point of view, every activity such as product development, manufacturing, quality control or delivery are areas where strategic alliances can help to reduce the cost of the products and brings advantege of synergies.
