Abstract:
This thesis reports on research into the electromagnetic backscatter from overhead power cables as this method of distributing electrical power is hazardous to aircraft flying at low-altitudes especially during periods of low visibility. The work presented intends to improve current overhead cable detection techniques by using high-resolution millimetre-wave devices which will also allow compact devices that can be practical on a variety of airborne platforms such as manned aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and drones. The research also presents cable measurements obtained by airborne radar d

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to the matter of imaging (further explained as profile reconstruction) in Forward Scatter Radars (FSR). Firstly, an introduction to radar systems, including forward scatter radar, is made, then an introduction to the scalar theory of diffraction and principles of holography follows. The application of holographic imaging principles in the microwave domain is studied. The practical modelling of forward scatter radar target signals is made, based on the theoretical expectations and approximations outlined. Theoretical background of the imaging in FSR is made, based on pr

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to the study of innovative forward scatter radar (FSR) configurations and techniques. FSR is a specific kind of bistatic radar having bistatic angle equal or close to 180 ̊. The goal of this PhD project is to investigate techniques and configurations which would improve FSR performance, making it a more appealing system. This thesis proposes an initial radar overview with deep focus on forward scatter capabilities. FSR principles, radar cross section and target signature are widely discussed. Thus, numerous innovative studies done during this PhD project are presented.

This study is to maintain and extend the power standards at National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom. The calibration service of microwave power sensors at high frequencies is endangered because a limited number of traceable waveguide power sensors is available at 50 GHz and above. In this thesis, the technologies of sensing microwave power in waveguides are reviewed, and the bolometric power sensor is investigated further, as its principle is suitable for the traceability requirement at NPL. The conventional design technique of bolometric sensor based on transmission line theo

Abstract:
This thesis summarises the research done on the feasibility of detecting and automatically classifying wind turbine faults using a short-range radar. Two main areas are included in the thesis: the theoretical and experimental analysis of wind turbine blade radar signatures in the near-field and the classification of wind turbine structural faults using machine learning algorithms. In the former, a new theoretical framework has been developed which extends the current far-field models and includes a mathematical and experimental analysis of simple flat blades as well as complex curved blades. Abstract:
A novel approach is introduced to design microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) with improved fabrication tolerance for highly demanded Millimetre-wave (mm-wave) (30-300GHz) and Terahertz (THz) (0.3-3THz) frequency applications. The presented MP A designing method overcomes the challenges which exist with the fabrication and implementation of the conventional MP A designs at mm-wave and THz frequencies. The following research contributions have been added to the state-ofthe- art work: (i) designing of improved size MPAs at 60GHz, 1 OOGHz, 635GHz and 835GHz to prove the designing concept, (ii) detail

Abstract:
Bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (BSAR) systems are under an increasing amount of research activity over the last years. The possibility of the use of transmitters of opportunity has increased the flexibility and the applications of radar systems. One of the options is the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as transmitters, such as GPS, GLONASS or the forthcoming Galileo and Beidou, that is used in this study. This thesis is the result of the study of a GNSS-based SAR used for detection of changes that may occur in a scene. Although passive SAR is outclassed by active SAR in te

Abstract:
The first part of this thesis focuses on very low-dimensional bottleneck features (BNFs), extracted from deep neural networks (DNNs) for speech analysis and recognition. Very low-dimensional BNFs are analysed in terms of their capability of representing speech and their suitability for modelling speech dynamics. Nine-dimensional BNFs obtained from a phone discrimination DNN are shown to give comparable phone recognition accuracy to 39-dimensional MFCCs, and an average of 34% higher phone recognition accuracy than formant-based features of the same dimensions. They also preserve the trajectory

Abstract:
The research and development of wireless communication systems is often based on relatively simple models of the network topology, the radio channel and the radio propagation. This is considered to be mostly appropriate, as only under these conditions the complex technical problems in this field can be fully solved to their theoretical boundaries. However, it can also be the case that algorithms or concepts created under simplified assumptions perform in a significantly different way, when they are applied in more realistic scenarios. This Thesis presents research work which can be seen as a s
