Abstract:
The pick-and-place of components to build up complex working machines, such as the robotic arms on automotive assembly lines, has been integral to the enormous success and complexity of modern heavy industry. Modern nanomanufacturing stands in stark contrast to this strategy, reliant instead on the two-dimensional patterning of radiation-sensitive resists to build high-density machines of relative simplicity. The driving goal of our research has thus been to develop a new method of manipulation that would allow the pick-and-place of nanoscale components to mirror that of the assembly lines. A

A set of quasi-one-dimensional fluid equations are used for electrons, and a particle-tracking Boltzmann solver is used for the heavy species. The two solutions are linked by charge neutrality. A novel statistical approach to particle creation and tracking is employed which reduces com

Abstract:
The 'high-pressure' atmospheric (TIG) arc plasma is studied by means of a multi-Langmuir probe system. In order to determine the appropriate regime of operation, definitions of the plasma parameters for the description of the argon arc are considered and evaluations are presented. A description of the probe basic techniques is followed by an in-depth discussion of the different regimes of probe operation. The emphasis is put on atmospheric and flowing (arc) regimes. Probe sheath theories are compared and “Nonidealities” like cooling due to plasma-probe motion and probe emission mechanisms are

The main interest was to explore the 2DEG charge densities for a different system geometries, magnetic field applied, and tip voltages. Abstract:
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) has become an indispensable metrology tool for nanoscale surface characterization. Today, research and industry demand faster and more accurate metrology and these demands must be met expediently. Traditional AFM cantilevers and associated actuators (i.e. piezoelectric) are limited in regards to actuation speed and resonance frequency presenting the user with an undesired trade-off of speed versus resolution. Based on a pre-existing technology known as the FIRAT (Force Sensing Integrated Readout and Active Tip) AFM probe, this work aims to remedy actuation and

Micro-assembly techniques have been identified as a major technology ‘pillar’ that will underpin further advancements in integrated micro-and nano-systems. In practice, there is a generic requirement for component parts that are often fragile, or that have been prepared by mutually incompatible processes, to be brought together to make a complete working system. This thesis discusses an electrostatic positioning technique for micro-scale elements that could form the basis of an industrial process.
