AbstractWe show how to define forward- and reverse-mode automatic differentiation source-code transformations or on a standard higher-order functional language. The transformations generate purely functional code, and they are principled in the sense that their definition arises from a categorical universal property. We give a semantic proof of correctness of the transformations. In their most elegant formulation, the transformations generate code with linear types. However, we demonstrate how the transformations can be implemented in a standard functional language without sacrificing correctness. To do so, we make use of abstract data types to represent the required linear types, e.g. through the use of a basic module system.

Abstract:

Islands are landmarks for sea birds, whether for orientation, as resting points during foraging and migration trips, or most importantly as nesting sites. This is due to the isolation that islands offer, rendering them free of many of the continental predators. If, additionally, islands are located in the midst of highly productive waters, they provide sea birds with abundant food, which is particularly valuable during the nesting season. This is the case in the northern Sea of Cortes. Not surprisingly, we find that the islands of this region are nesting sites for more than 90% of the world’s populations of Heermann’s Gulls (Larus heermanni) and Elegant Terns (Sterna elegans), and for about 90% of the global populations of the Least Storm-petrel (Oceanodroma microsoma), the Craven’s Murrelet (Synthliboramphus craveri), and the Yellow- footed Gull (Lams livens). The midriff island area of the Gulf of California also shelters approximately 70% of the world’s Black Storm-petrel (O. melania) and, at the subspecific level, provides breeding grounds for about 50% of the California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus), 50% of the Blue-footed Boobies (Sula nebouxii nebouxii), and 40% of the Brown Boobies (S. leucogaster brewsteri). A combination of characteristics in one particular island, Rasa, has made it a natural breeding sanctuary for Heermann’s Gulls. Besides the two traits mentioned above (lack of land predators and high marine productivity), these characteristics include (1) its characteristic flat topography from which it derives its name (rasa means “flat” in Spanish), and (2) its sparse vegetation cover, resulting from the extensive coverage of the island with guano that hinders vegetation growth. The Heermann’s Gull is the only North American representative of the group of White-hooded Gulls (Anderson 1983; Moynihan 1959; Storer 1971). The only other member of this group of gulls and hence its closest relative is the Grey Gull (Lams modestus), which inhabits the Pacific coast of South America along Chile and Peru and breeds inland in the Atacama Desert some 50-100 km away from the coast (Howell et al. 1974; Howell 1978).

Rilke regarded the Elegies as his magnum opus, and this and criticism’s readiness to adopt his judgement have not only obstructed appreciation of Rilke’s other work but made it hard to read the Elegies themselves. We need to learn to read them again, which to an extent means reading them against the grain. It is as a precarious structure, rather than as a monumental one, that they have their meaning. This chapter offers a reading of each elegy in turn, attending to the rhythms, movements, and poetic logic of the poems—in short, the language out of which they are made—more than to their ‘argument’. A focus and starting-point is the elegy itself: elegy as classical form points to art as what shapes life and attempts to give it meaning; elegy as lament points to life as what is resistant to art and in its transience always escapes its structures.

Negotiation is a very common interaction between automated agents. Many common negotiation protocols work with cardinal utilities, even though ordinal preferences, which only rank the outcomes, are easier to elicit from humans. In this work we concentrate on negotiation with ordinal preferences over a finite set of outcomes. We study an intuitive protocol for bilateral negotiation, where the two parties make offers alternately. We analyze the negotiation protocol under different settings. The work of Ogilvie and Tuck [1] was critical in extending strip theory to problems with forward speed. Salvesen et al. [2] used some of those findings in their classical work to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients in five degrees-of-freedom. Other methods have also utilized the formulae with success.
