Abstract:

Abstract:
Science is often thought of as a methodical but dull activity. However, the finest science, the breakthroughs most admired and respected by scientists themselves, are characterized by elegance. Thinking of elegance as grace, taste or refined luxury would be useless here. So what does elegance mean in the context of science? Economy is a considerable part of it, as is creativity. An elegant mathematical proof, an elegant theory, or an elegant experiment are all, that is, economical and imaginative, and sometimes breathtakingly simple, once explained. When it comes to elegance, however, what do we mean? What does the word elegance truly designate? It comes from the Latin elegantia, "taste, propriety, or refinement." Elegance is usually a synonym for beauty and has acquired the additional connotations of unusual effectiveness and simplicity. The word is frequently used as a standard of tastefulness, particularly in the areas of visual design, decoration, the sciences and the aesthetics of mathematics.

Abstract:
Of the 13 known species of water shrews in the world, two water shrews are known from India, the Elegant Water Shrew Nectogale elegans and Himalayan Water Shrew Chimmarogale himalayica. Of these, the Elegant Water Shrew was earlier reported only from streams of north Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, India. During the period 2014–2016, the Elegant Water Shrews were sighted at three different locations in Uttarakhand State in the western Himalayan region. The present records are evidence for the broader range of distribution of Nectogale elegans in India indicating that the species is more widely distributed than previously thought. We present the details of sightings, habitats and behavior of shrews that were recorded during our study on impact of climate change on the aquatic ecosystem of the Himalaya.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate factors affecting the impression of elegance of a jacket’s appearance. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire survey on the impression of jacket appearance was conducted using images of jackets of Japanese and European brands. A paired comparison and sensory test were carried out for four Japanese and European jackets. To explain different jacket appearances, the jacket patterns and silhouettes were investigated from an engineering point of view. Findings – Most Japanese subjects responded that European jackets in images were more elegant and characteristic of European style. In a comparison of jacket silhouettes, Jacket 1 (European brand) was evaluated as the most elegant. The waist and bust parts of Jacket 1 had three-dimensional shape whereas the Japanese jackets had planar and rectilinear shapes. This was due to the difference in the waist darts and curved lines in the patterns. Jacket appearance in terms of elegance is thus mainly affected by the waist and bust shapes, which are affected by darts and lines in the patterns. Originality/value – This is pioneering research on the elegance of garment appearance from an engineering point of view, using actual clothing. The comparison results for commercial jackets will be valuable to the apparel industry.

AbstractRNA-based gene control mechanisms pose an elegant and straightforward way to switch on, off, or fine-tune transgene expression without the need for expressing regulatory proteins. A small molecule effector binds directly to a ligand-binding aptamer RNA structure and thereby modulates expression of an associated target gene. We established genetic switches based on regulation of self-cleaving ribozymes and polyadenylation that allow for control of transgene expression in bacteria, yeast, human cell lines and Caenorhabditis elegans in a robust and dose-dependent manner.

Abstract:
Increased elegance in math and science is by the use of more comprehensive, easier to understand, and easier to use models. Increasing elegance allows courses to cover more material in greater depth. While the GLM is more elegant than the traditional ANOVA / Regression models, it has in practice been just one more topic added to already filled statistics courses and has had little impact on day-to-day statistical analyses. Introduced in the 1960s - 1970s, its impact has been delayed because it has been necessary to produce a new generation that knew the GLM but could also converse with the pre-1970 generation. When considering a possibly more elegant model, the "full" GLM includes not only GLM -- and therefore ANOVA and regression -- but also chi square contingency table analyses as well as multivariate analyses, and uses the F as the hypothesized variance divided by the error variance in all cases. Given advancing technology, the computations are now readily done and typically easier than the traditional ANOVA/Regression programs, allowing more focus on issues ranging from how the information is encapsulated so as to best test the hypotheses (by logs, logits, interactions, polynomials, repeated measures as slope or covariates, etc.) to meta-science and the principles of meta-analysis needed to use research literature. And, as expected, the more elegant full GLM means explicitly GLM software can be easier to learn and use.DOI:10.2458/azu_jmmss_v6i2_gorsuch

Abstract:
We clarified scenic landscape district by analyzing the importance of the term “scenic landscape” itself and its practical use and identified disastermitigationmeasures for historical urban environments. The term “scenic landscape” is categorized mainly based on two meanings given by the national language dictionary of Japan; “elegance (omomuki, &#36259)” and “personal quality (hitogara, &#20154&#26564).” The term is used to indicate psychological appraisal based on an aesthetic sense, not used to indicate a physical boundary. During post-Meiji-era modernization, the term “scenic landscape” acquired the added meaning of “elegant landscape,” a feature perceived by sight encompassing the meaning of “things to be preserved” – “scenic landscape district” thus came to mean an “elegant” scenic landscape and was established as a district system in the City Planning Act. The objectives of establishing a “scenic landscape district” were to preserve a historic site”s cultural heritage (core zone) and to maintain elegant landscapes (buffer zones) having historical value.

Abstract:
Lin Shu brought the style of elegance and succinctness of the ancient Chinese prose into his translation, but he also tried his best to convey the style of the original to readers. When rendering various original styles, he naturally brought the “inelegant” and “insuccinct” elements into the translation, thus weakening elegance and succinctness to some extent. Nevertheless, the “elegant and succinct” elements in his translation was maintained at a relatively high proportion as a whole, so his translation style could still be categorized as that of “elegance and succinctness”. In terms of its dynamic formation, it was closely related to the translator, target readers and translation cultural strategy. To be specific, Lin Shu’s good command of classical Chinese prose, the stylistic preference of traditional literati and scholar bureaucrats, as well as the translation cultural strategy of assimilating the foreign languages with Chinese style, all contributed to the formation of Lin’s translation style.

The pig and human homologs are 94% identical and contain 1,085 and 1,086 amino acids, respectively. Hydropathy analyses of the three clones indicate typical KCC topology patterns with 12 transmembrane segments, large extracellular loops between transmembrane domains 5 and 6 (unique to KCC), and large COOH-terminal domains. Human KCC1 is widely expressed among various tissues. This KCC1 gene spans 23 kb and is organized in 24 exons, whereas the CE-KCC1 gene spans 3.5 kb and contains 10 exons. Transiently and stably transfected human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) expressing the human, pig, and C. elegans K-Cl cotransporter fulfilled two (pig) or five (human and C. elegans) criteria for increased expression of the K-Cl cotransporter. The criteria employed were basal K-Cl cotransport; stimulation of cotransport by swelling, N-ethylmaleimide, staurosporine, and reduced cell Mg concentration; and secondary stimulation of Na-K-Cl cotransport.

Abstract:
The authors of the presented article conducted primary research among contemporary gallants, aiming to identify consumer types within the niche of elegant men’s clothing, including possible dandies. In the conducted study, online surveys were posted on internet forums and thematic groups focused on Polish male smart dressers. As many as 30% of respondents considered themselves as dandies, and three types of customers were distinguished: exacting sartorialists, low-budget gallants and phonies. The difference between the first two is mainly due to disparities in purchasing budgets. Phonies, on the other hand, appear to be superficial in purchase decisions, perhaps gaining interest in an elegant style only as a temporary whim. The results will prove useful for brands in the men’s elegance segment, broadly highlighting the in-depth characteristics of different customer groups. Moreover, contrary to the subject literature, the research shows that dandyism is still a lively trend.

Abstract:
Through examination of variants in two versions of Jinpingmei, three versions of Water Margin, two versions of Journey to the West, and between relevant sections of Qingpingshantang Scripts, Ancient and Modern Fiction, Jingshi Tongyan, and Amazing Stories, the existence of two trends of elegance and popularity in the orthography of different versions and literary works may be detected. Those texts with a more elegant character have been largely influenced by a strategy of standardized orthography, which is closely related to the creation purpose, knowledge, and cultural awareness of the authors, the willingness of booksellers to produce and sell such works, and their target consumers and readership. The differentiation between elegance and popularity in the character of literary works truly reflects the divergence of different texts within different social strata, which is not only a linguistic and philological question, but also a sociological one.

Abstract:
Abstract Effects of variable energy intake on chick growth, organ development, and gut-passage time in seabirds were investigated by raising Elegant Tern (Sterna elegans) chicks in the laboratory on three diets involving a major prey species, northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), and a minor prey species, topsmelt (Atherinops affinis). Anchovies are ∼25% higher in energy content than topsmelt and represent a more abundant but highly fluctuating prey resource. Chicks were raised from age 15 to age 35 days posthatch on one of three diets (n = 8): (1) high-energy anchovy at the average daily intake rate, (2) low-energy topsmelt at the same intake rate, and (3) high-energy topsmelt (i.e. at a biomass equal in energy content to the anchovy diet). Chicks raised on the high-energy anchovy diet had a significantly faster gain of body mass and wing length. All three groups, however, had attained a statistically similar wing length at 35 days posthatch and did not differ in lean dry mass or pectoral muscle mass, indicating that energy was allocated preferentially toward wing development and flight capacity. Most digestive organs were heavier and gut-passage rates faster for chicks fed topsmelt. Bill dimensions and tarsus length showed little difference among chicks on the three diets. Lipid content of chicks that were fed anchovy was twice that of those fed low-energy topsmelt and one-third higher than that of chicks on the high-energy topsmelt diet. Our results indicate that Elegant Terns have evolved certain capacities for growth and digestion in response to variable prey quality that may increase the probability of chick survival. Nevertheless, if Elegant Tern chicks were switched to a lower quality, primarily topsmelt diet, they would be underweight at fledging with heavier digestive organs, lower lipid reserves, and faster gut-passage times, which would place added provisioning demands on the parents. Under that scenario, the prospects for survival and long-term reproductive success might diminish for such an Elegant Tern colony.

Abstract:
The relevance of the article is due to the fact that the attention of a modern personality is focused on the formation of the image. It helps not only to present it favorably, but at the same time to develop your own individual style. Among the significant components of style is elegance, which contributes to the uniqueness of the personality and its memorization in the environment. In this regard, the aim of the study was an attempt to construct a model of elegance, the analysis of which is built using the phenomenological and systemic approaches. A fairly complete phenomenological description of elegance in the first half of the twentieth century was carried out by the French fashion designer Maggi Ruff. The appeal to the systems approach of R. Barthes helped to create a theoretical construction of elegance, which became the novelty of the undertaken research. The elegance model is based on image (formal aspect) and fashion code (content aspect). In turn, the image of elegance is procedural: it includes the idea of an elegant image-design, realized in the image-embodiment, and the visibility of the latter contributes to the formation of the image-perception both by the person himself and by the people around him. The image of elegance corresponds to the aesthetic standards of the cultural and historical era, and its understanding is made possible thanks to the stories-descriptions using the fashion code. It includes semantic units with a rather abstract character and their metaphorical description (rhetoric). Among the semantic units of elegance, one can distinguish beauty, femininity, taste, life experience and improvisation, which manifest themselves already at the level of an image-concept, as well as chic, quality, well-groomed, additional details (accessories, aroma), clearly presented in the image-embodiment. The above affects the image-perception and its description. Today, there are certain transformations in the understanding of elegance. The intellectual component, harmony and taste gradually begin to disappear in it, and simulations and semantic units unacceptable for elegance (ugliness, absurdity, grotesque, lack of quality, simulative chic, lies) come to the fore. In modern times, knowledge of the features of the elegance model helps not only in building your own image, but also in diagnosing celebrity.

Abstract:
The Siromoney matrix model is a simple and elegant model for describing two-dimensional digital picture languages. The notion of attaching indices to nonterminals in a generative grammar, introduced and investigated by Aho. is considered in the vertical phase of a Siromoney matrix grammar (SMG). The advantage of this study is that the new model retains the simplicity and elegance of SMG but increases the generative power and enables us to describe pictures not generable by SMG. Besides certain closure properties and hierarchy results. applications of these two-dimensional grammars to describe tilings, polyominoes, distorted patterns and parquet deformations are studied.

Abstract:
A metaphor can often create novel features in an object or a situation. This phenomenon has been particularly hard to account for using amodal symbol systems: although highlighting and downplaying can explain the shift of focus, it cannot explain how entirely new features can come about. We suggest here that the dynamism of perceptual symbol systems, particularly the notion of simulator, provides an elegant account of the creativity of metaphor. The elegance lies in the idea that the creation of new features by a metaphor proceeds in the same way as the creation of regular features in a perceptual symbol.

Binary search trees are old hat, aren't they? Search trees are routinely covered in introductory computer science classes and they are widely used in functional programming courses to illustrate the benefits of algebraic data types and pattern matching. And indeed, the operation of insertion enjoys a succinct and elegant functional formulation. Figure 1 contains the six-liner given in the language Haskell 98.Alas, both succinctness and elegance are lost when it comes to implementing the dual operation of deletion, also shown in figure 1. Two additional helper functions are required causing the code size to double in comparison with insertion.

Abstract:
Abstract Dandyism was a thriving philosophical and social movement amongst elegant men of the nineteenth century. The prevailing conviction in the literature on the subject is that the dandy trend began to gradually disappear in the twentieth century, whereas in the new millennium it essentially no longer exists, or at best exists only as a mere shadow of itself. Herein we report a questionnaire study of elegantly-dressing Polish males regarding their behaviour on the fashion market, seeking to gain an better image of this particular market segment and at the same time to identify the features of contemporary dandies and possible connections with the “metro” style. The results indicate that dandyism (at least in the respondents’ opinion) is still a lively and thriving e-consumer community, which clearly differs in terms of certain features from metrosexualism. However, the modern-day “dandies” cannot easily be considered heirs to the ideals of their nineteenth-century counterparts. Our findings, in particular the characterization of twenty-first-century elegant-dressing men in Poland, may be of use to fashion brands in the broader men’s elegance segment.
