Full textFe-Pd alloys at about 30 at.% Pd allow obtaining high length changes or strains in the percent range due to thermal or magnetic shape memory effect. They are especially promising candidates for smart and intelligent materials in micro- and nanoactuators as well as sensors. In comparison to bulk materials and thin films the utilization of nanowires promises higher actuation frequencies and strains, which further heighten the scientific and technological interest. Electrodeposition within self-organized nanoporous templates is a very time efficient method to prepare even large arrays of Fe-Pd nanowires of different length and diameter compared to lithographic or physical methods. The aim of this work is to exhibit the preparation conditions such as electrolyte system, deposition parameter and post treatment for shape memory active Fe-Pd nanowires at about 30 at.% Pd. Correlations between morphology, local microstructure, structure and magnetic properties are investigated and evaluated. Fe-Pd nanowires are successfully prepared by electrodeposition despite the combination of noble Pd and less noble Fe metals. The usage of an electrolyte with complexed Fe and Pd ions and an optimized alternating potential deposition regime leads to continuous and almost defect free nanowires close to the composition Fe70Pd30. The complete transition from the bcc to fcc structure of the Fe-Pd alloy is achieved by an additional heat treatment. However, the successful preparation of these nanowires represents a key element towards nanoactuators based on shape memory alloys. Fundamental knowledge about electrochemical preparation of Fe-Pd nanowires is gained. Important starting points towards structure control during deposition and activation of the shape memory effect are identified

Full textBrushite coatings were deposited on titanium by electrochemical deposition in the presence of various crystallization inhibitors such as citric acid, treta-sodium diphosphate decahydrate and phytic acid. The resulting layers were compared with those without inhibitor addition. To verify the extent of inhibition, the mass of all layers was measured, which decreased for inhibition with citric acid and phytic acid and increased for sodium diphosphate. The crystallographic composition of the layers deposited with and without inhibition was determined by X-ray diffraction and showed pure brushite caotings with different amorphous content. The resulting values also provided information about the individual crystallite sizes within the layers. Scanning electron microscope images provided further information about the influence of the inhibitors of the layer morphology. The inhibition caused layers partly interspersed with cracks, whose crystal formations differed from the standard electrolyte. Selected samples were disinfected or sterilized under various conditions and subsequently reweighed and analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. After disinfection, pure brushite caotings were formed, which lost mass but still showed the typical crystal formations. Sterilization led to the transformation of brushite into monetite and hydroxyapatite. Furthermore, the biological response of the layers to human fetal osteoblast cell lines was determined to test cell compatibility. The results obtained were not usable and contained very high standard deviations

Full textTo develop implants with improved bone ingrowth, titanium samples were coated with homogeneous and dense struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) layers by means of electrochemically assisted deposition. Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate and/or zinc nitrate hexahydrate were added to the coating electrolyte in various concentrations in order to fabricate CuZn-doped struvite coatings. Release experiments were carried out with three different quasi-physiological media, namely simulated body fluid (SBF), fetal calf serum (FCS), and Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM). It could be shown that an antibacterial amount of copper and zinc ions was released. In summary, the electrochemically deposited CuZn-doped struvite coatings are a promising approach to improve bone implant ingrowth

Full textAseptic loosening of implants is still an issue especially for patients with osteoporosis. In order to minimize the risk of implant failure the functionalisation of implant surfaces with strontium is a promising technique. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of locally availible strontium on osteoclastic and osteoblastic cells. Electrochemically assisted deposition was used to provide strontium substituted struvite coatings on titanium surfaces. The strontium concentration ranged from 6 µg to 487 µg per sample. Growth of osteoclastic cells was investigated by the determination of cell number and cellular activity, as well as microscopical and transcriptional level studies. Osteoblasts were studied by determining cell number and cell activity. A general suppressing influence of strontium was observed on the differentiation and activity of osteoclasts. The most favourable properties were found for the highest strontium concentration under investigation, because additionally cell proliferation and activity of osteoblasts was not significantly affected

Full textAim of the work was the production of dense Ti-45Nb material by hot-pressing of gas-atomized Ti-45Nb powder. Maximum compression strength and low Young’s modulus values were obtained by means of a tailored microstructure and improved interlinking of the powder particles. In a next step defined amounts of porosity were introduced by hot-pressing the alloy powder with a space holder phase. The produced porous structures should be used as bone substitute material in an osteoporotic bone defect. Compression is the dominating load in such a defect. Accordingly, compression tests were conducted to assess the mechanical properties. The surface state of metallic bone replacement materials plays an important role regarding the osseointegration of the material into the surrounding bone tissue. A chemical and topographical modification of the surface is necessary to influence the equilibrium between the formation and resorption of bone on the interphase of implant and bone tissue. Especially in case of osteoporosis the stimulation bone formation is essential. Several studies have shown that strontium species have a positive effect on the formation of bone tissue and the inhibition of bone resorption. Therefore, a further aim of the work was the electrodeposition of Sr-containing hydroxyapatite layers and the structural, morphological and chemical characterization of the deposited layers. Furthermore, the release of Sr-species from the layers and the effect on hMSC (human mesenchymal stroma cells) were examined. Originating from studies on planar alloy surfaces, the transfer of the deposition approaches was shown in a proof of concept on the porous Ti-45Nb scaffolds.
