Full textOur doctoral research focuses on the training of French Teacher readers (SLE) subjects in secondary school in Gabon. Due to the introduction of the methodical reading in the official instructions in Gabon in the ’90s, the teaching of literary reading remains organized around activities that obscuring the reader’s subjectivity. Yet many educationalists argue that any reading is subjective (Rouxel and Langlade 2004 ; Louichon 2011 ; Sauvaire, 2013), and that the involvement of the reader would stimulate personal reactions and plural readings. In the continuity of recent work on literary reading, particularly on the training of readers (Mazauric, Fourtainier and Langlade, 2011 ; Émery-Bruneau, 2013 ; Ahr, 2014 ; Sauvaire, 2015), and following the overview of French teaching in Gabon that we have established (Abeme Ndong, 2015), we defend the idea that training of future French Teachers (FEF) in literary reading would be a prerequisite for taking into account of subjectivity of students readers. Our research is based on an experiment to integrate literary reading in the training of future secondary French Teachers at the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) of Libreville in Gabon. We believe that initiating the FEF to literary reading enables generating personal and varied readings leading to an interpretation of the literary reading text. It should, however, be noted that the difficulty lies in the fact that in Gabon the influence of the structuralist school on teaching of literature still prevails. Thus, given in lectures, the methodical reading focuses on learning the tools of text studied analysis, without a real participation of the readers. The teaching of literary reading boils down to the construction of a unique meaning by the Teacher (Duquesne, 1993 ; Langlade, 2004a). We designed an educational device to combine the structural analysis knowledge of the texts that the future teachers possess with the current didactic approaches to subjective reading. This training research was conducted as follows: First, we designed a teaching device for a collection of poems based on individual readings of texts and their interpretations by the FEF in collaborative activities. Second, we conducted our experiment with a FEF class from ENS in Gabon. This mechanism should bring the FEF by a back and forth between the texts and the readers, to enrich each other and to promote a reflexive posture (Bucheton...

Full textNowadays, the traditional cornerstone of studying literature – the reading of heritage works - is becoming a challenge for teachers, particularly those working in high schools with pupils aged from 15 to 18. The development of digital technologies and the exponential growth of social media has generated new multimodal writing and reading practices which combine images, sound, text, icons, etc. Indeed, for many people, the omnipresence of multimodal, digital literacy in cultural practices has motivated changes in their relationship to literature and culture and radically transformed reading and writing practices. This development has heightened the already apparent disconnect between school reading programs, concentrating on classical literature, and the private cultural practices of schooled teenagers. At the same time, the curriculum at secondary level invites teachers to articulate the study of literature with education for media and digital literacy. Innovation is encouraged. However, researchers have only recently started to investigate the effects of using digital media on literary reading. Drawing on research into the reader as subject, from the field of the didactics of literature, and research into multimodal digital and media literacy, this thesis asks what form teaching the reading of literary classics could take in this digital, multimedia age.In order to respond to this question, this thesis explores the hypothesis that a teaching protocol which takes into account the private cultural practices of the students, by giving a place within the learning to multimodal media, is likely to favour student implication in reading the classics and their appropriation of them. This qualitative study involved four different classes of students aged between 15 and 18. Each class participated in three teaching sequences which combined the use of multimodal, digital media with more traditional activities.Through analysis of a mixed corpus of traditional student writing, multimodal writing, filmed presentations, questionnaires and interviews, this study aims to provide a comprehensive, in-depth description of the path taken by twelve readers. The results confirm that employing a teaching protocol incorporating digital, multimodal media favours reader implication, appropriation of the reading and the expression of subjectivity. The results also highlight the importance of exchanges between readers, the role of interactions within the teaching sequence, and the pertinence of broadening the spaces and timeframes beyond the classroom which opens up a place for subjective expression. The analysis reveals a relatively varied level of mastery of multimodal, digital media by the pupils involved in the study, which confirms the importance of rational, systematic education in this domain

Full textIn the conjunction between the research works of the theorists of the literary reading and the educational specialists which elaborated the concept " of subject reader " and the programs for the French school of 2002, which introduced the literature and recognized the role of the reception, opens a field on the place and the formation of the reader at school. We made our subject of research, confined in the connection between two symbolic classes: the primary and secondary school. A first working axis consisted in leading an investigation on the reader through the official texts. So, we were able to establish that when they speak about the reader, it is mostly according to an ideal, what makes it an authority forged by representations and ideological movements more than an embodiment of particular individuals. This "school" reader is not the common, real reader. Secondly, we approached the question of the reader on the theoretical and didactic plans to encircle more exactly what we can understand by "real reader", and we ended in a double meaning of a word, that of a real, settled reader as theorized, and that of an empirical reader, who is concretely embodied, in competition with the school reader. This research work ended, in the third time, in the elaboration of didactic steps susceptible to take into account the interactions between these three readers' postures. We deducted several interests from it: so the pupil is formed as much by the reading as in the reading in a reflexive act where he confides, himself, at the same time as he discovers the work. They are so many tracks for the formation of the teachers

Full textIn this thesis, we suggest an understanding of academic and extra-academic reading in teenage years. Through reading sociology, education sociology and socialization sociology, we study the practical construction of reading habits (texts that are read, ways of readings, individual or collective conditions of reading) and how they are put into practice in different contexts. We show that actual reading results from a conjunction of made-up reading habits and reading promptings (advice, reading relationships, handed-over texts, academic exercises, and so on). So we explain some difficulties of academic reading and throw light on different reading expectations that secondary school pupils have. For this research, we met 77 boys and girls from secondary school with different social origins and schoolings. We interviewed them thoroughly about their academic and extra-academic reading, past and present reading relationship, library frequentation habits, and so on. We collected some of their French papers, attended their literature classes, met their teachers and analysed the official instructions too. For thesis’s demonstration, we developed an analysis in three points: we study the construction of reading habits from childhood to secondary school; we analyze contextual promptings, with a focus on secondary school; we explore the reactions of readers to different contextual promptings, and the intra-individual variations of reading from reading contexts. Actually, through the writing of the thesis, we suggest that methodological and theoretical orientations are indissociable in scientific work and we defend the presentation of scientific equipments

Full textCan reading literature be viewed as problem building and can it help high-school students get involved in encountering, getting familiar with, written works and acquiring critical skills? This is what this doctoral research defends within the theoretical framework of problematization (Fabre, Orange) and in the perspective of the theory of the subjective reader. This research first questions the presence of the paradign of the problem in the field of teaching French along with its links with the current methods of literature reading in high school: what does setting a problem about a text mean and is there a specific way to problematize one’s thinking in the field of Literature studies? It assumes that the problem-building process may be a relevant method of reconfiguring the text by the student, and that it may shed light on the links between subjective impressions and objectifying reading. This work then puts this hypothesis to the test. With the help of recordings of class activities at Première and Seconde levels and post-lesson interviews of students and teachers, it analyses students’ language interactions using problematization’s lozenge and provides elements likely to generate the activity of problematization as well as certain prerequisites to its triggering student involvement and the development of literary reading skills. Finally it analyses a survey carried out with French departments in two schools experimenting on how they guide students through their encounter of texts, and offers a few recommendations, particularly as to adopting an ethical approach, training teachers and anchoring written works in the students’ memory

Full textThis study was aimed to specify the reading levels at the beginning of secondary school. It uses data collected in September 1997 by "la Direction de l'Evaluation et de la Prospective" (Ministère de l'Education Nationale) based upon the national evaluation of French language proficiency and a reading evaluation test with 2594 sixth grade pupils. A sample of 52 adult students skilled readers also took the reading evaluation. The analysis showed important individual differences within the sixth graders sample. Out of them, 29 % are good readers but lack the reading proficiency of the adult readers. Upon entering sixth grade, the pupil cannot therefore be considered a skilled reader. However, 10 % of these pupils have both major reading difficulties and a low level of reading comprehension

Full textThis work describes basic linguistics skills of middle school students, in the normal track or in a specialized track, exploring their word reading skills (alphabetic and orthographic skills) and their oral linguistics skills (phonological, lexical and morphosyntactic). The functional organization of basic linguistics skills seems to have repercussions for the flexibility of mophosyntactic processing. We explored the compensatory aspect of morphosyntactic processing to some middle-schools students which are in difficulties ; morphosyntactic processing of these students seems firmly rooted in lexical knowledge, and especially verbs. Our subsequent study of the relations between reading comprehension and compensatory morphosyntactic behaviour, allowed us to explore the compatibility of this type of compensatory functioning with middle school scholastics activities and requirements

Full textThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the measurement characteristics of the formative assessment tool whose objective is to assess the competence to read and understand a variety of french texts in Quebec secondary school. For this purpose, an assessment tool consisting of thirteen items has been developed and a test of this tool has been conducted among six hundred and two (n = 602) students of the first cycle of secondary school in four school boards of the regions of Quebec City, Portneuf and Shawinigan. The analysis show that twelve out of the thirteen items of the assessment tool, have an acceptable discrimination parameter and an acceptable level of ease and should be kept in the tool. An item has a level of discrimination found not acceptable and should therefore be reviewed, including the evaluation grid. These results demonstrate that the formative assessment tool developed is promising considering measurement characteristics it has shown.

Full textThis work envisages the pathways of the secondary and university education as authorities of socialization which direct the reading practices of their public on the basis of their previous socialization. The comparative survey between several levels - college, high school, university - and education pathways - literary, economic, scientific and technical - allows characterizing the evolution of the reading practices as the pupils move forward in their school route and the role played by the pathways in this process. So it is shown how the differentiation of the frames of socialization established by the pathways is the origin of that of the social uses of the reading. The analysis of the collected materials opens with the examination of the uses of the reading to the middle school. How to characterize these uses? What do they owe to the "effect of age"? To the social and school profile of the pupils? To the specificities of the environment of school socialization? This panorama allows showing their evolution at the high school and at the university, as well as their differentiation according to the pathways. We will show then what the influencing effect of the pathways owes to the previous socialization of the pupils. We will establish, for every education pathway, ideal models of socialization in the reading that will allow understanding better such or such uses. Finally, we will characterize the adjustment more or less adequately realized between these uses and the disciplinary requirements. These modalities depend on the affinity between previous socialization and school requirements

Full textThis thesis analyzes how attitudes towards reading are generated along social lines,as individuals go through various social situations. It aims to show that a specific experience, namely the French two-year selective literary preparatory courses, can foster new reading practices and representations. Indeed, from the very start, developing distinctive reading practices is made necessary by these preparatory courses, as well as redefining how reading is usually perceived, based not only on readers’ histories and socio-cultural backgrounds but also on their future projects. Both « Hypokhâgne » and« Khâgne » Years can only be understood by taking into account all the individual’s reading career, from the first reading experiences to those that take place shortly afterthis course.Forty-nine semi-structured interviews of current and former students of literary preparatory courses with a minor in humanities were conducted and provided the material for the present qualitative study, along with the main sociological studies aboutnot only reading practices and representations, but also on the student experience, inasmuch as it provides the basis for differentiated socialisation processes. Reading is viewed not just as a cultural practice but as an intellectual work tool that requires to have developed peculiar habits

Full textThis research leans on two major considerations: the importance of French, particularly written French, for Algerian high school students, and the high failure rate for the written French exam for the high school diploma. As many pupils are supposed to read in French at university, it is crucial to prepare them, during high school, to possess the necessary skills to understand written comprehension. This thesis investigates the capacity of a group of high school students to read thoroughly, varied French texts, with the objective to construct meaning in an autonomous way and it is by means of using the strategy of questioning. The principal hypothesis is that these pupils fail in reading because they were not taught to question texts. This central hypothesis generates two sub-hypotheses. At first, in order for pupils to reach this zone of development, rarely required (knowing how to question autonomously), the support of this strategy by the teacher proves to be unavoidable. It is with inter-questioning that the pupils learn intra-questioning. This change of representation in the act of reading leads to a reflection that, in turn, develops the meta-cognitive activity. As such this research is theoretically anchored no a determinedly socio-constructivist perspective. On the methodological plan, this research is incorporated in an experimental didactic perspective. Two groups, the one experimental and the other, the control, participated in a class experiment. The pupils of both groups were invited to question the same texts in an interpretative way, on implicit and on essential information. Two tests; the one extracted from PISA 2000 and the other one we created called" synthetic questioning " constituted a pre-test and a comment-test to verify the level of both classes in understanding written comprehension (especially in thorough comprehension) and it before and after to the experiment. This was realized further to a preliminary extensive investigation concerning the representations of reading-comprehension and establishing a foreground in the teaching - learning context in Algerian high schools. 44 teachers and 305 pupils from wilaya in Algeria, participated in this investigation. The results obtained in the Survey and in the didactic experiment; show that the teaching - learning of questioning to allow a thorough comprehension of texts is possible. These conclusions merit to be consolidated by the other studies on the other populations and the other types of texts than those used in this research. A much needed endeavour that allows the pupils to be endowed with an effective strategy and to make them autonomous and responsible readers

Full textWith mirror neurons and simulation theories, recent findings in neuroscience on inter-subjective relations offer new data to literary theory about fictional narrative. They help restore literary bovarysm of which cognitive version, the fictional empathy, is the subject of this thesis. It appears that, in a world created by fiction, the fictional empathy that the reader feels for characters allows him to understand their mental states and anticipate their behavior. Thus, the fictional emotions, real catalyst of the simulation process that allows the reader to physically experience the perspective of the character, fully participate in the process of understanding and interpreting the story. The objective is therefore to rethink the mental activity of the reader of fiction, with a focus on how the reader grasps the fictional world and gets involved emotionally. The capacity for fictional empathy then becomes a reader’s skill, essential to immerse himself in the fictional universe. This approach raises a question about the teaching of literary reading. When reading fiction, in which way and how is it advisable to seek the students’ fictional empathy for the characters? To address this issue, this thesis proposes that a reading-cum-writing support mechanism be envisaged: the "character’s diary". The experiment conducted in CM2 and 6th grade classes, relates to the diary of Gilgamesh, mythological hero whose adventure stories belong to our founding texts. Through the observation of students' written along with the analysis of interviews and individual questionnaires, it would appear that fictional writing requested from students in the first person are a means to exercise their capacity for fictional empathy and as a corollary develop their skills in literary reading

Full textThe present thesis explores the effects of reciprocal teaching on the reading comprehension of French as a second language learners who are recent immigrants with limited prior schooling educated in welcoming classes at the secondary school level. Two experimental groups and a control group took part in this research. In the experimental groups, two intervention models were proposed to the students, one which consisted of a traditional reciprocal teaching method and another with an intervention designed to foster openness to the first languages of the students. A questionnaire was administered to the three groups as well as 11 individual interviews which enabled the researcher to measure the effects of the interventions and to create reading portraits of the 11 individuals through case studies. The results of the questionnaire confirm that the interventions in reciprocal teaching had significant effects on the reading comprehension of the students in the two experimental groups in comparison to the students of the control group. Moreover, while the case studies support the same conclusions as of the questionnaire, the post-test results show that the students who took part in the experimental groups improved their cognitive and metacognitive strategies. Finally, when the two experimental groups are compared, both present positive gains in reading comprehension scores. However, the group which received an intervention with the added value of fostering openness to the first languages of the students showed a more positive and explicit perception of the relationship in reading between the first and second languages.
