Full textThis research wishes to explore elementary school teacher’s knowledge of student anxiety. Conducted with twelve elementary teachers (Grade 1 to 6) from Quebec with semistructured interviews, it wishes more specifically to identify teacher’s knowledge on the recognition of symptoms and their understanding of underlying theoretical concepts such as causes, explanatory factors and appropriate interventions. Moreover, it wishes to describe the interventions that they put in place to prevent and reduce their pupil’s anxiety and to analyze their personal and practical sources of knowledge on the subject. Results showed that teachers appear to rely mostly on their own professional and personal experiences as the main sources of knowledge on the subject, while initial training and continuous education have little contribution to their current level of knowledge. Even if they succeed to identify some anxiety’s causes, symptoms and consequences and to describe some interventions that actually have been proved to prevent and reduce anxiety in students, the knowledge seems inequally distributed amongst participants and remain incomplete. In the light of those results, new approaches and areas of research are finally needed to improve teacher’s initial and continuous training on this topic.

Full textThe popularity of selective special school projects prejudices equality of opportunity in Quebecer secondary schools. This study focuses on a non-selective special school project that offers both homework supervision and guidance for all and the possibility of participating in extracurricular activities for every pupil who wishes to do so. The study aims to describe the difference in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project on homework guidance and supervision according to their characteristics (gender, secondary cycle and type of education) and their work habits (time spent daily on homework and where homework are done). This study uses secondary data from a previous collaborative study which had shown students to have a positive perception of the project’s efficiency (Larouche, Amboulé-Abath et Savard, 2016a). Data interrogated stems from a questionnaire answered by 596 secondary school pupils from special needs education and regular classes. Results show many differences in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project according mainly on their work habits, but also on gender, secondary cycle, and type of education. Pupils who have a most positive perception of the efficiency of the project are those who do their homework both at home and at school and those who spend at least 30 minutes daily on their homework. Data also show that girls have a more positive perception of the efficiency of the project than boys. The latter tend to perceive more the disadvantages of the project. Pupils form cycle one (junior) and those from cycle two (senior) have a different perception of the project’s efficiency. Pupils enrolled in special needs classes have a more negative perception of the efficiency of the project than their peers.

Many school counsellors work with a youth population that makes varied and frequent use of the internet and social media (Thoër & Millerand, 2017; CEFRIO, 2017). Although web sites and Facebook available in schools offer young people a digital environment with possibilities for educational and career development (ECD), their utilization is not yet widely documented. Our research interest is the use of digital resources for ECD in the school environment. The role of ECD in the Quebec school system’s program of education (OCCOQ, 2013; MELS, 2007) as well as the influence of community interactions on young people’s plans for their future (Law, 1981) serve as terms of reference for understanding their use. The main objective of this qualitative research is to explore the use of web sites and Facebook for ECD in secondary schools in a Quebec French school board. Thirteen web sites (547 web elements) and thirteen Facebook sites (1531 publications) from one school board were the subject of a rigorous documentary analysis. The results of this research indicate that ECD is rare on websites and Facebook sites, that it underutilizes the potential of the sites, that it is directed mainly towards an adult population and that it has very little visibility. The analysis provides three main findings: ECD would benefit from occupying the digital environment available to young people, training should be available to accompany guidance professionals in their use of digital media and school counsellors should adopt a positive posture towards these methods and towards the digital environment.

Full textThe general objective of this thesis is to study the forms of parental and teacher involvement in the school-family-community relationship and the impact of these forms on primary school achievement.. More specifically, it consists of three objectives, which correspond to the three articles of the thesis. The first objective, discussed in the first article, is the theoretical study of the links between the forms of parental involvement (IMPP), the socio-economic status of the family (SES), and the student's academic success. This objective is achieved through a metasynthesis based on the examination of meta-analyzes, the aim here being to identify the links that research has so far established between these three variables, parental involvement (IMPP), academic achievement and socio-economic status of the family (SES), taking into account the methodological difficulties of their study. In particular, the analysis found that different definitions of IMPP, SES, and success measurement tools contribute to differences in the outcomes of studies with respect to the impact of parental involvement on student achievement. The second objective of this thesis is to study the forms of IMPP from the SES of the family, the forms of teacher involvement (IMPE) and to identify the links with the achievements of primary school children. The reference frame is that of the bio-ecological model of Bronfenbrenner (1979) and the model of the shared influence of Epstein (2009). These two models allow the study of IMPP and IMPE from the activities of parents and teachers, the roles of parents and teachers, and interpersonal relationships. To do this, a quantitative approach was adopted. The study sample consisted of 239 students and parents, and 46 teachers. The results show that the forms of the IMPP, such as school-family communication and learning at home, are favored by the parents and at the same time that they do promote success. The study also confirms that the feeling of parental competence is an important vector in motivating parents to get involved in school and at home. Moreover, the results show that parents' education influences the success and the choice of the parents to get involved with their children more than family income. On the other hand, this study explores the forms of IMPE by asking the teachers what it actually put in place to solicit parental involvement at school and at home. For example, teachers promote family-school communication and information for home learning, which the goal of enabling parents to better help children at home. However, while the findings did not clearly reveal which forms of IMPE support success, this study helped to advance knowledge about the teachers’ role and actions in soliciting parent collaboration. The third objective aims at identifying the forms of IMPP and IMPE from the discourses of parents and teachers, and the strengths and weaknesses in the relationship between the actors. To do so, a qualitative approach was favored, using a sample of 14 primary teachers and 45 parents from 7 primary schools in the national capital, Québec. The results revealed the convergence in the forms of the IMPP and the IMPE as school-family communication and home studying. Moreover, by confronting the reasons, expectations and perceptions of the actors, the results revealed that the main reason for their motivation is the student's success. Generally, parents and teachers are sensitive to the same difficulties that surround their relationship: the distance between school and family, the lack of communication, the loss of parent's confidence in the teacher, lack of time etc. The partners recognized that the climate is generally conducive to collaboration. However, the strengths and weaknesses that emerged from the actors' discourse made it possible to nuance and better understand the tensions surrounding the relationship between parents and teachers.

Full textThe consequences of indirect violence on school students have recently become top stories in the media. It is becoming obvious that this kind of violence may not be as mild as it was first considered and that it plays an important role in school success. This study reveals the impact of indirect victimization has on a students’ perception of their school climate. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 2290 students ranging from secondary one to five from seven different high schools in rural and semi-rural zones. The sample was part of a national study meant to give a portrait of school violence in the Province of Quebec. Regression analysis stated that indirect victimization on students have a negative impact on their perception of different aspects of their school climate. A greater impact was noticed on the population of victimized students than on the general population of students. The results showed a greater negative impact on the secondary one, four and five boys and on the secondary two and three girls, but when considering the total population; no distinction was noted between the two genders. This research brings up numerous questions on the bidirectional relationship between the perception of a school’s climate and indirect victimization as well as the impact of other variables like personal traits, institutional discrimination, belonging and gender perception in this whole dynamic. Keywords: School violence, victimization, indirect violence, school climat.

Full textThis study aims to analyze the link between school climate and peer victimization in context of school achievement and perseverance in high school. After the demonstration of existing theoretical links between these three variables, this research evaluates the influence of school climate that we approach through four components (feeling of security, feeling of justice, relationship and support, collaboration and participation) on six types of school victimization (physical, verbal, psychological, physical, electronic, sexual nature). The findings of this research, that was conducted among 2,154 students from secondary one to five, show evidence that the component of the sub-climate "Feeling of security" has the greatest impact on the six studied forms of victimization; meaning that students who feel safe in their school are less likely to experience the six different forms of violence. The influence of the other school climate components on victimzation is very low. Since the experience of victimization and the perception of a negative school climate can affect the school achievement and perseverance and hinder graduation, and that the decision to drop out of secondary education is often taken during the 4th and 5th year of high school (Frase, 1989; MELS, 2009), we focus on this specific group of students in the third part of this thesis work. The analysis conducted specifically among secondary four and five students (n = 715) indicates that those who are victims of at least one of the six distinct form of violence declare a more negative perception of each school climate component compare to non-victims. Precisely, victims of physical and verbal forms perceive more negativel the four school climate components and victims of material, psychological and sexual nature forms judge also more negatively every school climate components, except for the safety climate. These results show that school climate perception influence victimization for all high school students and highlight how victimization, experienced in secondary four and five, affect more negatively their school climate perception. Some reflections are finally suggested to guide future research as well as some practical outcome for school settings.

In regions outside the Montreal metropolitan area, teachers are increasingly required to adapt to the presence of allophones in their schools and, in particular, within mainstream classrooms, which have traditionally been homogeneous. A number of these students are low-literate (De Koninck & Armand, 2012a). Research carried out on teachers' cognition, with respect to their ability to adapt, has shown that beliefs and perceptions are key to any changes that they are likely to make (Borg, 2006). In order to provide teachers with effective support, therefore, training programs must be designed to help them meet these new challenges, encouraging them to reflect on the situation and to implement new didactic and pedagogical practices in collaboration with other educators from the same school (Korthagen, 2010a). The objective of this study has been to determine whether a professional development program, "Alloscol", aimed at teachers and pedagogical advisors from the Quebec City area, would enable them to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of French-language learners. Alloscol focuses on providing support for the development of the language of schooling of educated or under-educated students by means of an integrated approach based on reflection and collaboration. Qualitative analysis was carried out on interviews conducted at the beginning and at the conclusion of the training program and on different adjusted versions of their course outlines. The results revealed: (1) that changes in the discourse and practices of teachers improved the integration of French-language learners into mainstream classrooms, thanks to a better understanding of the characteristics of the language of schooling along with associated sociocultural issues; and (2) that the design of the training program, which integrated reflection and collaboration among teachers with different areas of expertise, had a significant impact on these changes, although this varied from participant to participant. Respondents also indicated that factors related to working conditions, such as time constraints, hiring policies, and workload assignment, were barriers to deriving full benefit from the training program.

Full textIn Quebec, the political discourse on the academic adaptations of students with handicaps, social maladjustments and learning difficulties (EHDAA) has evolved considerably. These political changes have had a direct impact on the care of students in difficulty in the school system. The current system favors the inclusion of these students in ordinary classes in a "normalizing" way. However, another 50% of students with special needs studies attend a special high school class. In addition to this discrepancy, studies have shown that EHDAA students who attend a regular class are more likely to succeed in school than those who attend a special class. These results seem relevant because they are consistent with those of Rousseau (2009), who notes the lack of qualification and graduation among this population despite the establishment of special classes and vocational training in high school. The purpose of this study is to collect data on the attitudes of students with adjustment and learning difficulties (EDAA) who attended a special high school class and who are currently enrolled in an employment-based training program (ECSPF3). Analyzing students' attitudes in special classes by asking them about their school career seems relevant and new since it allows to bring new scientific knowledge to research and intervention paths to educational actors. This descriptive study, written in a constructivist current, aims to analyze the attitudes of eight ECSPFs in order to seek ways of intervention. A reflection on the management of EDAA in special classes would promote their perseverance and their success in school.

Full textAt the core of this study is the belief that, with a better knowledge of the profile and the needs of students who have difficulty in history, we will be able to help them more effectively. We studied some factors (among other things: difficulties with understanding and writing text, problems like dyslexia or ADHD, test anxiety and afterschool employment) and some theories from historical didactic to understand the perceptions of the causes of the failure at the ministerial uniform examination of students who chose to enroll in a summer class of “History and Citizenship Education” to earn another chance at this evaluation. During summer 2014 and 2015, we collected opinions from 160 students enrolled in four different summer schools in “History and Citizen Education” after a failure at the 4th secondary’s ministerial uniform examination. Our results indicate that most of the students who failed declared having difficulties in writing and understanding texts (in their native language). Some factors (dyslexia, ADHD, test anxiety and after-school employment) seem also to have a negative impact on success at the ministerial uniform examination. A conception of history based on memorisation seem to confuse most of this population at the evaluation. Full textThe transition from school to work for students with an intellectual disability is a challenging step for the students, their parents as well as school stakeholders. This stage, which precedes the end of schooling, is also decisive for the future of these students. The participation of students in their transition process is an important aspect that contributes to the success of this stage. However, in the province of Quebec, this period has been poorly documented. This doctoral thesis focuses on the participation of students with intellectual disabilities in their transition process. The study is conducted with nine students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, aged 18 to 20, their parents and the school staff they attend. On one hand, it has been possible to describe the participation of these students by considering their point of view and the one of those around them (parents, school stakeholders) and, on the other hand, the strategies of support to participation deployed by them. The study's theoretical framework is the resilience-based ecosystem model, which places students "in the driver's seat" of their transition process; the student takes an active part and makes an original contribution. The interactions with his entourage allow him to overcome the difficulties encountered in his trajectory and to reinforce his natural resilience. This model also identifies individual, family or environmental protective factors that counteract the adversity experienced by students at the time of transition. This study favors a mixed methodology that includes interviews with students, parents and school stakeholders, the use of adapted instruments with the students (Échelle de résilience et Grille d’évaluation du réseau de soutien social) and the analysis of students' school intervention plans. The information collected situates the participation of students with developmental disabilities in their transition process according to four themes: their perspective on their trajectory and future activities, their participation in transition planning, their participation in preparatory activities for a transition to active life after schooling and accountability. Through these four themes, positive aspects and challenges emerge. Thus, the students identified projects for their life after school, they participated in their intervention plan meeting, they carry out several activities to develop skills for their future socio-professional integration, mainly in internship, and they assume certain responsibilities in their families and in the school environment. Still, students do not seem to have a suitable representation of the entire transition process as they do not participate very much in the preparation of their transition plan and the decisions that concern them. The results also show that students' participation in their transition process can be facilitated by different strategies: supporting the development of communication and social interaction skills, fostering student participation in transition planning (e.g. by making available and accessible materials that allow students to take ownership of their transition process and to better represent this important step for their future), to provide students with experiences in school and the community, to foster collaboration between the school and the family as well as with other important actors in the community and to put in place strategies that facilitate student learning and participation. In short, this study shows the contribution of practices put in place, the importance of consolidating them, and proposes new avenues that have the potential to increase student participation in their transition process in order to enable them to play a leading role in their future. Key words : intellectual disability, participation, transition from school to active life, resilience, social support, risk factors, protective factors, ecosystem model

Full textThis study's main objective was to determine in what ways are characterized pupils aged 12 and 13 years attending the “Cheminement particulier continu” (CPC) regarding their math skills, their reading skills, their working memory, their visuo-spatial as well as their attention abilities. This study was also to assess the relationship between math skills and these different variables. The third objective was to compare student performance of CPC with a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to those obtained by the CPC students without a diagnosis of ADHD in respect to the variables measured. Finally, we also wanted to compare result of the CPC student that are medicated for their ADHD to result of the CPC student that are not medicated for their ADHD. Forty students from 12 and 13 years of CPC were assess in this study. The results show that CPC students were significantly lower, with respect to five variables, than the students of the same age who do not have learning disabilities. No significant correlation was found between math skills and the study’s variables and between the different variables when used in conjunction with each other. In addition, the results show that CPC students with ADHD achieve similar results in the five variables under study that CPC students without ADHD. Finally, the results tell us that CPC students with ADHD medicated achieve results similar in the five variables under study that CPC students that are not medicated for their ADHD.

Full textThe objective of our research was to explore the contribution of an informal science activity program (called Débrouillards), currently used in elementary schools in the province of Quebec, Canada, on students’ science motivation. We also explored the moderating effect of some child’s characteristics: age, sex, sociofamilial adversity and scientific home culture/literacy (e.g. visit to science museums with parents, watching science programs on TV). Our research was quantitative and quasi-experimental. 28 classes of pupils from 5th and 6th grade (n=526) in Quebec (Canada) elementary schools were randomly assigned to participation to 0, 1, 2, or 3 workshops in class. The science workshops were led by a trained science educator. The pupils filled out a questionnaire twice (before the workshops and 2 weeks after) to evaluate their self-efficacy (Bandura, 1997) for scientific tasks, and value (Eccles & Wigfileld, 2002) of science. We performed hierarchical regression analyses on the two dependent variables. Exposure to the informal science activity program had no effect on the children’s science motivation variables. However, many moderating effects were found significant, so the program had effects on children with certain characteristics. Our results suggest that the program is more beneficial to the science motivation of older children (countering the developmental decline observed), those with low sociofamilial adversity, and boys, but especially for children with low level of scientific culture/literacy. The program seems to give them a certain “cultural capital” that they did not have, so they can catch up with children’s mean. Almost all the effects were observed only in the group who participated in 3 workshops, which suggests that exposure to a number of experiences is necessary to contribute to science motivation.

Full textIn Quebec, most children go to school at 5 years old when they enter kindergaten. For the majority of children, entry to school will be no problem. For others, the transition will be more difficult and the difficulties encountered at the beginning of schooling will often have consequences that will affect them throughout their school path. In order to meet students’ needs, several support measures can be put in place, for both students and teachers, including collaboration between different professionals (Belmont & Verillon, 2004). Previously, the collaboration was done outside the classroom by co-intervention. As things change, it is now being carried out more and more within the class-group by co-teaching. Most co-teaching research was conducted at the primary and secondary levels and focused on defining the concept and evaluating the effectiveness of this type of teaching and its set up (Friend et al., 2010). Most research doesn’t focus on actual practices of teachers, especially in the kindergaten classroom. The purpose of this case study is to 1) identify and analyze the interventions made within the group in order to take into account the specific needs of students at risk, handicapped or in difficulty of adaptation or learning. It also wants to 2) describe and to understand how kindergaten co-teaching works by observing coteaching teaching-learning situations. This research was conducted with two kindergaten teachers from the Quebec-Chaudière-Appalaches region doing co-teaching on a full-time basis. The teaching-learning situations were observed between January and May 2018 every two weeks. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, filmed observations as well as selfconfrontation interviews. The results of this research show that full-time co-teaching in kindergarten is a form of collaboration that promotes inclusive education and pedagogical differentiation of both learning and teaching, not only the students’ needs in difficulty, but also all students in the classroom. Full textIn many countries, there is an increasing educational trend towards full inclusion, meaning that every child, disabled or not, should be taught in a regular classroom (Ferguson, 2008; Fuchs & Fuchs, 1994; Kavale, 2002). In Quebec, the Education Act and the Special Education Policy state that students at risk for school failure or with learning disabilities should receive instruction in the most natural environment (MELS, 1999). Regular classrooms have thus become more diverse in terms of children’s basic skills (e.g., reading and writing; Ferguson, 2008; McLeskey & Waldron, 2011). Accordingly, there is a need to implement instruction strategies that allow both advanced and weaker learners to succeed and develop their competencies by providing them with optimal challenges suited to their abilities (Corno, 2008). Differentiated instruction has been recognized as a promising practice. However, few studies have investigated the effects of this pedagogical practice on students’ social development and educational adjustment (Connor, Jakobsons, et al., 2009; Reis, McCoach, Little, Muller, & Burcu, 2011; Ysseldyke, Spicuzza, Koscioleck, Teelucksingh, et al., 2003). The purpose of this thesis was to develop and validate a self-report scale evaluating teachers’ use of differentiated instruction strategies, to verify whether this practice attenuates some negative consequences of social comparison on students’ French self-concept, and to investigate whether differentiated instruction increases the positive effect of teacher structure on children’s perceived competence and autonomous motivation. A sample of 422 students from 27 elementary school classrooms (third to sixth grades) was used. Results from the three articles included in the thesis, as well as their methodological, theoretical, and practical implications are discussed.

Full textThis study reports situations where sportsmanship is or is not used in high school physical education (PE) classes. A total of 158 high school students reported 269 significant events (134 positive, 135 negative) using the Critical Incident Technique (Brunelle, Drouin, Godbout & Tousignant, 1988). A content analysis of open model (L'Ecuyer, 1988) has led to the emergence of five dimensions: Support to teammates or opponents (42,8%), Respect of opponents, partners and/or equipment (21,9%) Equity between students inside a learning situation (20,8%), Honesty (8,2%) and Tenacity (6,3%). For those students, the absence of sportsmanship in PE is expressed primarily by a lack of Equity, Support and respect between students. These results invite physical educators to reconsider some of the learning circumstances as reported by their students.

Full textThis master's dissertation presents the results of a study measuring the impact of the in-service training program Regard9 on collective efficacy beliefs regarding the prevention and management of students’ behavioral difficulties. This study also intended to identify contextual factors that foster and restrain de development of the collective efficacy beliefs. Named “Regard9”, the in-service training program took place in one elementary school of Québec City, and lasted two years (2014 to 2016). The program “Regard 9” included 5 training workshops of three hours each as well as continuous professional support. The program was built upon evidence-based practices oriented toward the prevention and management of behavioral difficulties, the conditions of effectiveness of professional development activities, and the needs expressed by the school staff. The effects of the program Regard9 were assessed using a pre-experimental design with one-group pretest (autumn 2014) and posttest (spring 2016) measure. Paired t-test and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed significant positive effect of the program on collective efficacy beliefs of the participants (n = 24). The effect size also suggests that the program can produce substantial effects on the development of collective efficacy beliefs in an educational context. The results show various contextual factors that foster and restrain the development of collective efficacy beliefs. Implications for further research and practice are discussed.
